Announcing our first "It Might Get Bright" event at the studio in Atlanta. Come hang out with Capture Integration as they bring in a whole bunch of medium format digital gear for you to try. Details and registration info on the blog. This is a free event! Just asking that you register.
It Might Get Bright is going to be an ongoing series of events for photographers and creatives in the Atlanta area.
Disclosure – I am not receiving any endorsement, money, or product from Capture Integration or any other retailer or manufacturer for holding this event. I simply asked CI if they’d drag all their stuff to my studio to let everyone have a go at it. They said yes. End of story. :)

If you're a portrait photographer, you have GOT to watch this!
Today my Guest Blogger is headshot photographer Peter Hurley and he did a special video for the blog on a critical posing technique that is absolutely fantastic!!! I promise you --- you will learn something new and invaluable for your next portrait shoot from watching this. VERY well done, and to the point, with great examples!!!
I know we hate leaving G+ to watch other stuff (I tried to embed the Vimeo clip here but couldn't), but I promise you --- this will be worth your while (the comments on my blog today are over the top about his tutorial). http://bit.ly/wDrCTg

A Photographer named Alessandro asked a question on my blog today....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would like to know you opinion about DXOMark ratings about camera sensors.
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Camera-Sensor-Ratings
According to that, Nikon D3x has better performance than phase one p40+... even in dynamic range.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My reply -
I’ve seen those charts and honestly, they mean nothing to me. Absolutely nothing. Here’s why. You can find spec sheets that might show a Toyota Camry outperforming a BMW in gas mileage, road noise, etc, etc. You drive a Camry and it’s really nice. Then you drive a BMW or Mercedes or something and you t... more »

I got off my ass yesterday and shot some street portraits with the new Phase One IQ140. It's a beast of a camera but running it through the paces in various lighting conditions was a good exercise in finding how it acts in different conditions. I can't be any more pleased with the image quality.
Someone on my blog asked how I approach subjects on the streets. Here is my reply...
I would say that I summon my inner Forrest Gump for this kind of stuff. I keep a big smile on my face, keep the camera in view at all times, and approach folks with an extended hand and I introduce myself. So if you were just hanging out somewhere I come walking up, shake your hand, and say “Hi! I’m Zack. I just saw you hanging out right here and I love your hat. Can I take your picture. That is an awesome hat. Love that. Wish I could rock that look like you do.” or “Oh man, that is a bad ass tat... more »

Testing the new Fuji x10 camera today in the studio. Fresh out of squirrels to photograph so I'm shooting dead leaves. Yeah, I know. :) Note that I'm synching at 1/1000th of a second. Gotta love leaf shutters. Ah ha! See the connection?
I'm an idiot.

So, this guy writes to me this week....
I get my fair share of weird emails but this one got under my skin. Usually the best course of action is to just delete them and move on but sometimes you just have to stand up for yourself, what you believe, what you've been through, and for those people a person may be lumping you in with.
Sometimes you just don't sit quietly because they'll go on in life and say "Well I wrote so-and-so an email and they never responded because they knew I was right." This guy also calls out +Chase Jarvis and +Scott Kelby in his email. Say all you want about me but don't go hatin' on friends of mine who have hearts of gold and do nothing but give a lot to this industry.
Sometimes you keep your mouth shut but sometimes you just gotta bitch slap a fool. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do but sometimes...... more »

I'm looking for interesting subjects in Atlanta who are 70 or older for a personal portrait project. Know someone who would be interested in giving me 20 or so minutes of their time? I'll travel to them around the Atlanta area and they get prints!
email me at studio @ zackarias [dot] com.
Attached are a few of my first portraits from this project.
Cheers,
Zack

Just read this 10 internet marketing tips for photographers.
Honestly I think this is a great example of a blog post that creates more noise than signal. If you are going to make a statement like "join an online gallery" you should have a list of them for examples, a list of people doing good work with those galleries, and pros and cons of each. Just making blanket statements like that without any information to back it up is pure noise.
All of it is fluff until the end when there are few morsels of something to chew on. I think we need to start calling this crap out more so that people stop filling the Internet with meaningless posts and start offering up real value.
I'm not trying to start a fight or anything but these posts are becoming more and more prevalent these days and trying to find solid information is getting harder to do. I just sort of... more »

Starting to get bids today on the build out of the new studio space. There's not a ton to do for now. I want to live in the space for awhile before I finalize everything. I hate moving but I love being in a new place.

Signed the lease on the new studio space today. I'm really stoked about it. I've added a bit over 1,000 sq. ft and I'm paying less per month in rent. Utilities may be the death of me though. It's a warehouse with 25-30' ceiling. It is insulated and 2 of 4 sides are adjoined to other buildings.
I need more space because of a client that I have in house. We're doing a lot of photography for them and the amount of work we are doing has grown to the point that my current space is massively inefficient and it is hindering us more than helping us. Plus, if I book a portait shoot I don't have room in my studio to shoot that kind of work any more. I have to book another studio space on those days or shoot everything on location.
Lastly, we have not been able to hold events for quite some time because the studio is just not available for folks to come in. We have a... more »
