Sorry, but locking a Spielberg-produced HALO live-action series as viewable only on your new console as a way to drive sales? Doesn't really speak too highly of your confidence of the product as a games console....

I hear the refrain all the time: Why don't content providers make this easier to get?

It's  invariably about a film, a digital book, a piece of music … content.

The party "holding" things up is always the content provider.

While it seems obvious to everyone on the planet that the content owners are best served making their content easily available for a fair price with no impediments, they put all manner of obstacles in the way of interested parties at every turn.

Idiotic DRM schemes (which never work),  lack of availability, cable subscription to watch a single show, higher prices, or the content not being available at all in digital format are the most common issues.

Content owners don't do this because they are stupid (for the most part), they do it because they want to control what you see, read and hear.

Something for the new folks who have circled....  Here's a link to my latest book, a collection of short stories from a Kung Fu Spaghetti Western fantasy world, featuring me and folks like Scott Lynch, Chuck Wendig, Matt Forbeck, Tessa Gratton, Ari Marmell and more.   Available in softcover and kindle format.

TALES OF THE FAR WEST

Imagine: A fantasy world, but not one based on Medieval/Dark Ages European culture and myth, but rather on the tropes of the Spaghetti Western and Chinese Wuxia. Add steampunk elements. Mix well.

A fantasy world that mixes the inspirations of Django and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon... The Good, The Bad & The Ugly and House of Flying Daggers... Fistful of Dollars and Fist of Legend.

Before 11am this morning, I talked about how shocked I was that I had 10,356 people who have circled me here on Google+.

Doing a little digging, I found that Google recently altered its Suggested Users engine, which they use to recommend people to others:
http://alremetch.com/how-to-get-on-a-suggested-user-list/

It seems evident that I must be on some Suggested User list, because now, barely 7 hours later, my circled-by count is at 10,483.  I'm getting a new person circling me every 3 minutes or so.

So, uh...  Hi there, new folks!    Please drop into the comments below and say hi -- I'd love to know how you discovered me, and please tell me a bit about yourself!

I have no patience for bad writing.

"I get the job in DC, I’ll never see you. That's the end of the relationship."  Really, Castle writers?  Never heard of the Acela?

You know who can take extended weekends? Self-employed writers.  You know who can write on trains?  Writers.   NYC to DC is 2 1/2 hrs. #cmon.

This ranks right up there with "The Hamptons P.D."

The sole drawback to my choice to request banning at RPGnet -- when threads come up about my products where people have questions, and I cannot answer them.

For example:  This thread:  http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?688303-Far-West-goes-to-Cubicle-7/page4   -- where people are criticizing the decision not to do a Limited Edition of FAR WEST (not taking anything away, just making the general edition full-color and hardcover too, now that we have C7 behind us) -- would probably be well-served by people being aware of my statement here:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/Adamant/far-west-western-wuxia-mashup-adventure-game/posts/476292  -- where I say that I didn't realize that having it be limited was that important to people, and I obviously misjudged -- and here:  http://intothefarwest.com/forum/discussion/122/non-limited-edition#Item_2  -- where I confirm that I've beentalking... more »

FFS, people! Hate the playah, not the game.

Really, I feel a bit silly coming to the "defense" of a sitcom, but I'm annoyed by all of the finger pointing, in largely the wrong direction. Yes, I'm talking about THE BIG BANG THEORY.

There has been a theme for a while now (exhibit 1 here: http://tinyurl.com/8pfd2n3), that TBBT, in a variety of flavors (sexist-to-misogynist/gay-hating/disability-hating/perpetuating sterotypes/just plain MEAN), picks on geeks and our "culture", such as it is. And just last night, I saw people complaining about the awful representation of women playing D&D.

Here's the thing. Yes, the show does poke fun at geeks, but not as horribly as some people would have you believe. Because it is a situation comedy, and the formula for situation comedies is to do what comedy in general does: Examine our foibles byblo... more »

My entire social-media feed of writers, game designers and filmmakers have already posted about this, but I must add my voice to the chorus:

Harryhausen was a huge influence on my childhood, and I am ever thankful that I was of an age that not only got to see his early seminal works on TV, but was also able to see his later work in the 70s and into the beginning of the 80s -- in a darkened theatre, on a movie screen, as intended.

I don't understand the freak-out that I'm seeing some folks have over Adobe's move to Creative Cloud exclusive from here on out.

I update, on average, about every 3 years. The subscription cost ($49.99 per month) over three years is cheaper than a full purchase of the Suite.

If you're not a heavy user, go with the single-app subscription ($19.99 per app) just for the one or two you use.

The news that Penguin is to aggressively expand the operations of Author Solutions was accompanied by a now-familiar phenomenon: no mention of the fact that Author Solutions is a universally reviled vanity press that has cheated 150,000 writers out of their savings. The publishing business has a Penguin-shaped problem, and it doesn't want to talk about it.
