The survey by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University paints a picture of a nation wounded by the recession in ways that have diminished future expectations.
Nearly one in four respondents said they were laid off at some point during the past four years, and even larger numbers said they had immediate family members or close friends who were thrown out of work.

Disabled veteran asks for public support; service dog faces euthanasia for biting woman who beat him with metal pole
An Army Veteran with disabilities is asking for the public's help in saving his service dog, Dutch, from court-ordered euthanasia. After being punched, kicked, and hit with a metal pole for several minutes, Dutch bit his attacker and has now been accused of being a "vicious" dog.
Dutch is a 4-year-old American Allaunt, who is a registered service dog and an important part of Jeremy Aguilar's life. Dutch has never shown any aggressive behavior before or after the incident and is a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen.

+Kobo Inc. is requiring full name, date of birth, and gender to update account settings
I bought a Kobo Mini from my favorite local bookstore around Christmas. It's been great. Today, I went to change a setting on my account, and found that I couldn't change several of the settings without also providing my name, date of birth, and gender.
This sucks, for several reasons:
It's bait and switch. It's not required for new accounts, so new users can start buying books, or even pick up one of Kobo's ebook readers, before they one day discover that Kobo won't let them change certain settings without providing this extra information. Ironically, the privacy-sensitive "Keep a list of items I have recently viewed so that I can get back to them quickly" option can't be turned off without providing more personal info... more »

Virginia State Senator Henry Marsh, a black lawyer who grew up under Jim Crow, took the day off yesterday to attend President Obama's inauguration.
The Virginia Senate is split 50-50, but nothing pressing was on the calendar. So, the Republicans took advantage of his absence to redistrict the entire state, with no prior notice and no hearings, to gerrymander black voters into one district and make it difficult for black candidates to get elected anywhere else.

Today i got the automated message, that Galen Dreamrezzer does not fit the "real name" conventions of Google+, and that my account will be cancelled, if i do not change the name to my real name.
For now, i changed my Google+ name to fit the conventions. But, dear Google+, did you ever thing avout virtual reality, and that we use different names for that? That our virtual names have the same importance and meaning as our real names? That real names do not have any use for virtual reality? That my circles are not even interested in my real name, they want and need my virtual name?
Until today I was a big fan of Google+, but Google made me re-think this attitude. I'm not sure if Google+ is modern enough, to fit the needs of virtual reality. Maybe time to change to a more open social network.

This is not one a shelter photo and not the normal type of post you find here but this kitty desperately needs a home....NOW!!! This was the original email I received, the contact info is below the story. Please, keep comments to a minimum, Sammy needs to be shared far and wide...the finder CANNOT keep her and she has no place to go once released from the vet hospital.

A month or so ago a black and white female stray ended up at my house. She was silky, sweet, and not a feral cat at all. We live in rural Geneva and often pets are dumped on our road. I currently have a deaf momma and her two kittens I have adopted. They were only 3 weeks old when she brought them to our woodpile. Now they are healty, fixed, and happy. Have you lost your precious memories?
I need lots of help please. While walking in the Arches National Park in Utah on 31st December 2012, I picked up a SD card thinking it fell out of my camera. I have discovered that it is not mine at all and would like to get it back to its owner who seems to be an international traveller as was I.
The 8GB SD card is completely full and it seems to be more than holiday pics although I have not looked closely except at these two photos that I have chosen to put up and have blurred the face of the woman appearing in both images to protect her privacy - she and her travelling companions will know who they are.
From what I can gather - the tourist visited Las Vegas around the 23rd December travelling via Wirepass Trailhead on the 29th December to reach Arches National Park where they visited on both 30th December and 31st December 2012. I f... more »

The shear number of books I have in electronic form would cause me to lose my sh*t if this were to happen.
As the article says, a sale is a sale, regardless of what many rights holders want it to be (a lease rather than a sale).
tl;dr version: a customer of B&N purchased a eBook, downloaded and read it. Then went back much later to re-download and read but was not able because the CC they used to purchase with had expired. *Long* after the sale had gone through.

I know people tend to think of me as jaded, bitter and cynical. Hell, I tend to think of myself that way most of the time. So why do I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve? Is Guild Wars 2 really that good?
I've been playing since BWE2 and I've been watching the game grow into a beautiful, dynamic and challenging experience. It has revived my interest in MMOs, and maybe even restored my faith in the people who play them (a little). In short, I've been having fun. Remember fun?
I've been working my ass off all week so I can take this weekend off. I'll be locking the doors, switching off the phone, and taking off my pants. I'm not into fashion. I'm probably the least fashionable person I know. But as some people say of art, "I know what I like". And what I like is clothing made out of candy. Taking the edible panty idea to it's extreme is this sparkly evening gown made out of gummy bears. I'd never wear it, but I'd damn sure eat it.

So I've been absent for quite a while, and I wish I could say it was for some awesome reason, or even an awful reason, like I was on safari or was in a coma, or maybe both, like someone took my comatose body on safari because they knew it was my dying wish to see the gorillas in their natural habitat, and there are pictures of me propped up against a tree with a baby gorilla flinging its poop at me, but sadly, comatose me has a much more exciting life than non-comatose me and I was not comatose. Hell, I don't even have a lousy excuse, much less an awesome/awful reason.
The truth is, I logged into G+ months ago to find the look had changed to a disturbing degree. Everything was crammed on on side of the screen, there were big-ass useless sidebars and everything looked unbalanced and asymmetrical and I just didn't like it.
