Disabled veteran asks for public support; service dog faces euthanasia for biting woman who beat him with metal pole
An Army Veteran with disabilities is asking for the public's help in saving his service dog, Dutch, from court-ordered euthanasia. After being punched, kicked, and hit with a metal pole for several minutes, Dutch bit his attacker and has now been accused of being a "vicious" dog.

Dutch is a 4-year-old American Allaunt, who is a registered service dog and an important part of Jeremy Aguilar's life. Dutch has never shown any aggressive behavior before or after the incident and is a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen.

Basic income success.

"Studies at the beginning, mid-point and end of the project confirmed that, in villages receiving payments, people spent more on eggs, meat and fish, and on healthcare. Children’s school marks improved in 68% of families, and the time they spent at school nearly tripled. Saving also tripled, and twice as many people were able to start a new business."

The Collapsed Middle Class: Greed Wiped it Out. One-Fourth of America's Largest Corporations Do Not Pay Taxes.

Americans remain deeply pessimistic about the nation’s economic future nearly four years into the recovery, and the vast majority think it will take “many years” for things to return to the way they were before the downturn, according to a poll released Thursday.

The survey by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University paints a picture of a nation wounded by the recession in ways that have diminished future expectations.

Nearly one in four respondents said they were laid off at some point during the past four years, and even larger numbers said they had immediate family members or close friends who were thrown out of work.

Many of those who found new jobs were forced to settle for less. Nearly half said they took a step down in status from their previous jobs, while 54 percent said they have had to accept lower pay. [23,000,000 people, in fact.] Often, the pay cuts were severe. On-third of re-employed workers said they swallowed salary cuts of more than 30 percent, while another third said their pay went down between 11 percent and 20 percent.

Even though the economy has recovered more than half the 9 million jobs lost during the Great Recession, the survey found that Americans perceive that the economy has descended to a new normal.

Fewer than one in five agree that jobs, careers and employment opportunities will be better for the next generation. Nearly three in five said the ability of young people to afford college — a crucial, if ever more uncertain, factor in upward mobility — is permanently damaged. More than two in five believed workers will never feel as secure in their jobs as they did before the recession. Nearly half said the elderly will have to find part-time work after retiring. And 86 percent of Americans said the availability of good jobs at good pay will never return or will not return for many years.

“We have had many months straight of private-sector job growth. Yet people are stuck with this attitude and perception,” said Carl Van Horn, director of the Heldrich Center. It speaks to how powerful, widespread and enduring this Great Recession is. The survey’s findings in many ways match other measures of the nation’s economic struggles after the worst downturn since the Great Depression.

The downturn destroyed nearly 40 percent of Americans’ wealth, according to the Federal Reserve, and pushed the unemployment rate to 10 percent.

The survey found strong support for three policy proposals aimed at improving the nation’s labor market. Eight in 10 wanted the government to award tax credits to employers that hire new workers. Three out of four supported stronger education and job training programs. And three out of five said the government should fund direct job creation programs.

Gah, screw this and screw you +Kobo Inc.

+Kobo Inc.  is requiring full name, date of birth, and gender to update account settings

I bought a Kobo Mini from my favorite local bookstore around Christmas.  It's been great.  Today, I went to change a setting on my account, and found that I couldn't change several of the settings without also providing my name, date of birth, and gender.

This sucks, for several reasons:

It's bait and switch.  It's not required for new accounts, so new users can start buying books, or even pick up one of Kobo's ebook readers, before they one day discover that Kobo won't let them change certain settings without providing this extra information.  Ironically, the privacy-sensitive "Keep a list of items I have recently viewed so that I can get back to them quickly" option can't be turned off without providing more personal information!

It erodes reader privacy for no reader benefit.  eBooks have some necessary privacy compromises (especially if you want to be able to re-download books), but this is pushing us even farther from the anonymity of being able to purchase a book in a store with cash.  Asking for my credit card billing information is a necessary compromise to let me buy ebooks online.  Demanding demographic data isn't.

It's yet another copy of your DOB.  For better or worse, lots of places use your date of birth to verify you are who you say you are.  Kobo will happily display this to anyone who can get into your Kobo account, so they're just one more company whose security systems I have to trust.

Stereotyping sucks (even if it's done by a computer).  I don't know if they're using this to seed their recommendation engine or not, but:  Kobo has a recommendation engine that worked well for me without this information.  Feeding it demographic information will at best do nothing, and will at worst make it put less weight on the actual connections between books and more weight on whether the other people who liked them were demographically similar to me.

There's no "other" gender.  If you identify as something other than "male" or "female", you're outta luck.  Even Google+ got this one right.  If you're looking for demographics, learning that someone identifies outside the gender binary is actually really useful information.

I talked to one of Kobo's chat reps, who was terribly apologetic but did not provide any explanation besides that they used it to "create your profile" and for "company internal records".  (He also gave some bogus reasons, such that it's used for credit card verification.)

I'm talking to my local bookstore (where I bought the Kobo) to see if they can push back a little.  If you're a Kobo fan or just a proponent of privacy for readers, I'd encourage you to speak up.___Gah, screw this and screw you +Kobo Inc.

Virginia State Senator Henry Marsh, a black lawyer who grew up under Jim Crow, took the day off yesterday to attend President Obama's inauguration.

The Virginia Senate is split 50-50, but nothing pressing was on the calendar. So, the Republicans took advantage of his absence to redistrict the entire state, with no prior notice and no hearings, to gerrymander black voters into one district and make it difficult for black candidates to get elected anywhere else.

This is how Virginia Republicans celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday and the second inauguration of the first black president.

G+ can we just please stop this bullshit? I thought you wanted 'name-shaped names". Well Galen Dreamrezzer looks fairly name-shaped from where I'm standing.

Were you just waiting for the internet ire over nymwars to die down before you snuck in and started the suspensions again? People will notice, you know. Identity activists haven't been chloroformed by your brief flirtation with good will.  People can determine their own identities without your damned help!

Today i got the automated message, that Galen Dreamrezzer does not fit the "real name" conventions of Google+, and that my account will be cancelled, if i do not change the name to my real name.
For now, i changed my Google+ name to fit the conventions. But, dear Google+, did you ever thing avout virtual reality, and that we use different names for that? That our virtual names have the same importance and meaning as our real names? That real names do not have any use for virtual reality? That my circles are not even interested in my real name, they want and need my virtual name?

Until today I was a big fan of Google+, but Google made me re-think this attitude. I'm not sure if Google+ is modern enough, to fit the needs of virtual reality. Maybe time to change to a more open social network.

Well, another day will bring another insight, but I'm sure and a bit sad, that this behaviour of Google will lead to a huge decrease of virtual world citizens in G+.___G+ can we just please stop this bullshit? I'll be honest, if I were in a stable housing situation I'd adopt this cat in a heartbeat. I'm in love with this darling without even having met her. If there is anyne out there who would consider giving this lovely cat a home, please contact the email provided.

This is not one a shelter photo and not the normal type of post you find here but this kitty desperately needs a home....NOW!!! This was the original email I received, the contact info is below the story. Please, keep comments to a minimum, Sammy needs to be shared far and wide...the finder CANNOT keep her and she has no place to go once released from the vet hospital.
Here is Sammy's (aka Miss Kitty) story:

A month or so ago a black and white female stray ended up at my house. She was silky, sweet, and not a feral cat at all. We live in rural Geneva and often pets are dumped on our road. I currently have a deaf momma and her two kittens I have adopted. They were only 3 weeks old when she brought them to our woodpile. Now they are healty, fixed, and happy. Anyway, I called the kitty Sammy and fed her. She was one of the most lovable cats ever, actually standing on two hind legs just so you could stroke her head. She disappeared after a while and I thought she might have found another home on one of the nearby farms.
She reappeared on New Years night about midnight on our front porch. I went out to give her some food and to my horror found she was missing half of her bottom jaw! She still purred and rubbed me even with her horrendous injuries. She had a horrible time eating and I noticed that she was quite dirty and thin.
I took her to the vets for what I thought would be euthanasia. The vet decided to at least give her a chance so they started antibiotics. I found a nearby rescue to help pay the vet bill. She underwent surgery after they got the infection under control. There was exposed and missing bone in her bottom jaw, and little they could do. They covered bone with skin and kept up the antibiotics. Her bottom jaw is now half an inch to the right of her upper jaw. They found she was around 5-6, and had been spayed. They also found she was FIV positive. But throughout the whole ordeal the vet clinic fell in love with her because of her extremely friendly nature and her will to live. She continued to purr and beg for attention. The most amazing thing of all is that this cat has learned to eat with her PAW! She cannot pick up food normally because her teeth do not match so she feeds herself with her paw. That is a cat with a big will to live!
Our problem is that we do not have a foster (or forever) home for the cat. I hate to think that after all she has been through now she will end up euthanized because no one will adopt her. Especially when she gives so much love! Can you help us out? I would appreciate it if you would consider helping. I have continued to solicit for donations to help pay the vet bill but the cat will soon be ready to go to a home. If someone would actually meet this cat they would fall in love with her. She needs a home INSIDE with either other FIV cats or a one cat family. Please let me know if you can help or have any suggestions. Sammy (or Miss Kitty) is at the Seminole Trail Animal Hospital in Winter Springs right now. They have been wonderful to work with and have been great to the kitty.

****If you can help Sammy, please contact Karen at: karen@lustre.us***

(Many vets are not up to date on FIV and so many tell people that the infected cat must be an only cat or with other FIV positive cats....that's not true. Some vets immediately recommend "euthanasia" for FIV positive cats. One of the leading veteranary universities (Cornell) has done many studies on FIV and it's transmission. FIV is transmitted via a deep puncture bite....it's highly unlikely that Sammy could bite another cat with only a portion of her jaw left. The one thing you need to be careful about with them is infection or illness...that is what takes their lives in the end, not the FIV....but, with any pet, when they get sick or hurt they should be seen by a vet.)

Have you lost your precious memories?

I need lots of help please.  While walking in the Arches National Park in Utah on 31st December 2012, I picked up a SD card thinking it fell out of my camera. I have discovered that it is not mine at all and would like to get it back to its owner who seems to be an international traveller as was I.

The 8GB SD card is completely full and it seems to be more than holiday pics although I have not looked closely except at these two photos that I have chosen to put up and have blurred the face of the woman appearing in both images to protect her privacy - she and her travelling companions will know who they are.

3. Drive south or west on the nearest state highway that has the number 4 in it. Keep driving until you see an abandoned hotel with a blue Ford pick-up truck parked in the otherwise vacant lot. Pull in and park next to the truck. Exit your vehicle, taking the sandwich with you. The driver's side door to the truck will be open and a King James Bible will be lying in the driver's seat. Remove the bible from the seat and replace it with one of the coins from your paper bag then close the door. A page will be bookmarked. Turn to this page and find the 4th verse from the top. Open your ketchup packet and write this verse in ketchup upon the windshield of the truck. With the remainder of the ketchup, draw a circle in the bed of the truck and leave the bible face down in the center of this circle, open to the page with the verse you wrote. Put the empty ketchup packet down the back of your pants.
4. Find room 4 of the hotel. Beneath the doormat in front of the room you will find a key; use this key to open the door to room 4. DO NOT TURN ON THE LIGHTS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. The TV will be on, but the screen will be nothing but snow. Place the second of the coins atop the TV set, then seat yourself in front of the television and watch the screen carefully. Eat half the sandwich. When you've finished eating, numbers will begin to form on the screen. Say each number you see aloud. When you see the number four, close your eyes and you will hear a knock at the door. Call out "Come in".
5. The door will open and you will hear heavy footsteps. DO NOT OPEN YOUR EYES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Hold the paper bag in front of you and say, "I believe this is your sandwich". The bag will be taken from your hand. Keep your hands in front of you, palms up. If your visitor approves of the sandwich, he will place the final coin in one of your hands. If he leaves without giving you the final coin, you have failed, and must return home never to try again.
6. Once the coin is in your hands, ask "Are you Jared P Brooks?" If the answer is yes, run for the door without looking at the visitor. Get to your car as quickly as possible and don't look back. You'll find the bible in the passenger seat of your car. Drive home and toss the bible out the window at the exact halfway mark between the hotel and your home, shouting the bible verse as you do.
7. If the answer is "No" put the coin in your pocket and stand up. You'll feel a cold, clammy hand take yours and lead you toward the back of the room. Do not open your eyes. You'll be lead through a door you had not previously seen and down a series of corridors. A chill emptiness will settle upon your bones, and you will grow weary, but perservere. Do not let go of the hand that guides you, or you will be forever lost.
8. You will eventually reach a room that feels warm and inviting. A voice will say "Thank you for the sandwich". Your hand will be released and you will be left alone. You can now open your eyes.
9. You will find yourself back in your home, in front of your computer. Despite your familiar surroundings, everything will feel somehow new, and not quite the same as it felt when you left your home. Nothing is out of place, everyone and everything is as it should be, and yet you will have a sense that you are somehow a stranger. The smiles of your loved ones will seem false, and the surfaces of your environment will feel like a veneer barely covering a deep and dreadful truth.
10. Sit  before your computer. You will find your browser open to G+, and focused upon this post. In the comments, add your name, the denominations of the coins in your bag, and the type of sandwich you made. ADD NO OTHER INFORMATION. Go directly to bed. You will fall into a deep sleep and one of the people from the Circle of People Who Want to Be In This Circle will appear in your dreams and whisper to you the secret of the Circle of People Who Want to Be In This Circle. If you survive this grave revelation, you will awaken to find yourself a member of the Circle of People Who Want to Be In This Circle.
11. Congratulations, initiate. You are now a member of the Circle of People Who Want to Be In This Circle, and your life will never be the same. Share this Circle with as many victi... errrr... potential initiates as you can, and don't forget to give detailed instructions.

(yup, this is exactly how I feel when I see those posts of shared circles that give long detailed instructions on how to get into your shared circle)___

This is one of my favorites by him (though I also enjoy the molasses story, and his recent Logan's Run sequel, among many many others). Anyway, enjoy. I hope this puts you in a festive mood for tomorrow's Armageddon.

#Nanowrimo may be over, but International story a day month is just getting started. A new title is posted daily by +steff leffler and the idea is to write a story based on the title. Some great entries so far, and it's a good way to keep the juices flowing past nano, but without all the pressure of nano.

I just wanted to poke my head in and say congratulations to those of you who are entering the home-stretch of nano. Though I couldn't participate this year, it's been fun and inspiring seeing all the progress you guys have made. You've done an awesome job. Now let's see those word counts.

(more) DRM stupidity

The shear number of books I have in electronic form would cause me to lose my sh*t if this were to happen.

As the article says, a sale is a sale, regardless of what many rights holders want it to be (a lease rather than a sale).

tl;dr version: a customer of B&N purchased a eBook, downloaded and read it. Then went back much later to re-download and read but was not able because the CC they used to purchase with had expired.  *Long* after the sale had gone through.

So what playable races would you like to see added to gw2 in future expansions (yes, I'm already thinking about expansions - I intend to be playing this game for a long time). I think the Tengu should join the fight against evil. Come on Tengu - we need you (this has nothing to do with the fact that I'd love to play a character with pretty feathers).

And what about other wishes for the future of GW2? Anything else you'd like to see added? Classes? Features? Items? Activities?

I know people tend to think of me as jaded, bitter and cynical. Hell, I tend to think of myself that way most of the time. So why do I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve? Is Guild Wars 2 really that good?

I've been playing since BWE2 and I've been watching the game grow into a beautiful, dynamic and challenging experience. It has revived my interest in MMOs, and maybe even restored my faith in the people who play them (a little). In short, I've been having fun. Remember fun?

I've been working my ass off all week so I can take this weekend off. I'll be locking the doors, switching off the phone, and taking off my pants. I won't be available to anyone, anywhere, for any reason, unless you want me to help you kill the Blood Witch, or use my cool mesmer powers to teleport you to a hard-to-reach vantage point.

Everyone else can see me on Monday, when I finally emerge from the darkness with cheeto-breath and a bad case of carpal tunnel.

So who's with me?

I'm not into fashion. I'm probably the least fashionable person I know. But as some people say of art, "I know what I like". And what I like is clothing made out of candy. Taking the edible panty idea to it's extreme is this sparkly evening gown made out of gummy bears. I'd never wear it, but I'd damn sure eat it.

So I've been absent for quite a while, and I wish I could say it was for some awesome reason, or even an awful reason, like I was on safari or was in a coma, or maybe both, like someone took my comatose body on safari because they knew it was my dying wish to see the gorillas in their natural habitat, and there are pictures of me propped up against a tree with a baby gorilla flinging its poop at me, but sadly, comatose me has a much more exciting life than non-comatose me and I was not comatose. Hell, I don't even have a lousy excuse, much less an awesome/awful reason.

The truth is, I logged into G+ months ago to find the look had changed to a disturbing degree. Everything was crammed on on side of the screen, there were big-ass useless sidebars and everything looked unbalanced and asymmetrical and I just didn't like it. The truth is, I logged into G+ months ago to find the look had changed to a disturbing degree. Everything was crammed on on side of the screen, there were big-ass useless sidebars and everything looked unbalanced and asymmetrical and I just didn't like it. I tried to post things with this newfangled interface and all I could come up with were stories about comatose people on a gorilla safari.

I'm sure waaaaaay back when these changes were first made they were discussed to death, but I missed all that because the new look gave me hives and I couldn't bring myself to log in. I'm certainly not trying to resurrect that conversation with this post, just explain what a shallow procrastinator I've been.

I didn't make a conscious decision to leave G+ - just the opposite. I love the community, I love the conversation, I still very much considered myself a part of it. I just kept putting off logging in until tomorrow... and tomorrow... and then today happened and I thought I'd give this newfangled thing another go. So here I am back from the comatose gorilla safari and ready to party.

What's been happening?___

Interesting! Mine were 1. Language 2. Social 3. Self.

ooh, this was fun! not surprising that Linguistic came out as my top one, I love words and languages - followed by Intrapersonal (Self) and Interpersonal (Social), which again makes perfect sense, except that they claim I have good social skills... huh, what do they know... I'm a socially awkward penguin.

IF Apple announces the new iPad today... I'll give one away!

UPDATE! IT was announced! I'll order it today, they ship on March 16th so when I get it, I'll send it to the winner!

Here is how to enter:

1) You gotta have me in a Circle. Got that? Cool.
2) Publicly share this post!

That's it! So, if you want to be one of the first people to get your hands on an iPad3 here is your first chance!!! I'll announce the winner one week from today.

Oh, and this is only for US and Canada folks. Sorry! I love you guys across the pond but shipping is very, very difficult and expensive for these types of things.

PS - For those of you who are skeptical, YES - I really am giving away the new iPad. And +Cali Lewis and I give away stuff all the time. Most of the time we get things donated because of our show (GeekBeat.TV), but in this case I'm paying for the new iPad out of my own pocket and one of you lucky souls will win it. Enjoy!

PS Again! - I got the order in! Here's a sneak peak: https://plus.google.com/109938202835872364257/posts/P9RQ38Li5aB___Sharing
