Nap Time

The recent announcement by Adobe that CS is moving to the cloud  has caused quite an uproar amongst Photographers. A few years back and I might have been upset but fortunately today we have options. This is a redo of an older image using the new Lightroom 5 Beta and finished with OnOne Suite 7.

Forest Star

A final pictorial tribute from me for this season to the beautiful small white flowers literally covering the forests of Finland - Valkovuokko - the flower for Mother's Day (today in Finland). This little beauty is a member of the Buttercup Family, Anemone L. the European Thimbleweed.

Spring time on a Marsh Marigold

This has been an extraordinary week - first the forrest floor received a covering of beautiful white flowers - the first of the season; then the leaves on the bushes and trees started to appear; and then today the lovely (but poisonous) Marsh Marigolds began to bloom. It's great to see such colours after a long dreary winter. Even the insects are starting to show up . . . . . . fantastic!  =)

First Spring Pansies

Today is a national holiday in Finland "Vappu" - loosely translated it is May Day - the first of May. But in Finland "Vappu" is much, much more. No matter - it has been a very nice sunny, warm and enjoyable day - actually the warmest day so far this spring despite a bit of chilly wind. Instead of taking the traditional Finnish walk through the Kaivopuisto park in the center of Helsinki I took a stroll along the Vantaa river and found these violet pansies on the dark forrest floor reaching up into a spear of sunshine. A real treat. Happy "Vappu"! - Happy Spring!

Mourning Cloak & Friends

One of the first butterflies of the season in Southern Finland, the Mourning Cloak, Nymphalis antiopa, dries its wings in the warm spring sunshine.

First of the season . . .

It's officially happened. Out at Pitkäkoski just north of Helsinki today and found my first butterflies of the season.

Here is a Small Tortoise shell butterfly - Aglais urticae - in Finnish Nokkosperhonen.

Winter Memory

Another Sunset

Drawn down to the beach as if attracted by a magnet, a crowed gathers to witness yet another sunset. Oh yes, it's a beautiful one but then so was yesterday's and the day before that and the day before that . . . What is it about sunsets? It's as if we humans have a specific gene that causes us to share the wonder again and again: another day is ending and another soon to begin. A beautiful sunset is the best show in town and it's free - albeit fleeting. Enjoy the moment. Rapture. I can't wait for tomorrow . . . . .

Meeting Place

Iceland's secret meeting place - the seam between the North American and Eurasian plates. Moving at about 2 centimeters (1 inch) a year, the rest of the seam can be found on the ocean floor along the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Iceland provides a beautiful but rare glimpse of our ever changing planet and allowed me to make this image while standing with one foot on the North American plate and the other on the Eurasian plate!

Roadside view

At the junction of route 36 and 550 looking north in Southwestern Iceland. They said it would rain - it was dry. On the return journey they said it would be clear weather - it snowed and rained. In Iceland it seems the weather is a bit unpredictable but the views remain fantastic.

Light Beacon

At the western tip of Engey island in the Kolla Fjord a yellow lighthouse marks the proximity of the harbour entrance to Reykjavik, Iceland. The lighthouse was built in 1902 and renovated in 1937.

Homeward Bound

A ferry boat full of passengers glides through the cold ice filled water of the South Harbor of Helsinki bound for the island fortress and Unesco World Heritage site of Suomenlinna. Constructed during the 18th century as a maritime base, Suomenlinna has been since 1973 a district of the city of Helsinki. More than 800 people permanently live in the six-islands that comprise the area.

London Eye

View from the giant ferris wheel on the banks of the River Thames - the London Eye. Helsinki, Finland has decided to have one as well and assembly is under way with expected completion by the end of April - just in time for the 1st of May Festival known as Vappu. The new Helsinki Ferris Wheel will be located at the South Harbor in the city center but it will be nothing like the 135m London Eye. At 50m tall the attraction will have heated gondolas allowing year round use and more than likely a great view!
