Add me to your circles, if you haven't done so already!2. +1 this circle!3. Publicly share this circle to public, your circles and extended circles.4. Members of Congress introduced a bill to protect property rights for commercial exploitation of asteroids. The bipartisan legislation, introduced by Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL) and Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-WA), is called the American Space Technology for Exploring Resource Opportunities in Deep Space (ASTEROIDS) Act.  See this fascinating piece on iO9.

Heading into the second year of Obamacare healthcare coverage, California officials said more than 1.2 million consumers in the state-run insurance exchange can expect modest price increases of 4.2% on average next year.  Covered California on Thursday announced the results of its rate negotiations with Anthem Blue Cross, Kaiser Permanente and other major insurers, an important yardstick for President Obama’s Affordable Care Act.

The percentage of Californians without health insurance has been cut in half since the exchange opened, from 22% a year ago to 11% by early June.

Um… almost all good outcomes.  Almost no bad ones. Health care costs going in exactly the opposite direction from that predicted by the hysterics… as has happened with every single forecast ever made by supply side “economics” ever… at all… ever.

All three of the US Army’s competing prototypes for the replacement of the Humvee (the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle) bear striking resemblance to the design that our team came up with in one of the pilot episodes for the 48 hour design challenge show The Architechs… a great program that the History Channel gave a pass on, during their ill-fated transition to becoming the Bigfoot Channel.

Ah, but the Army is already thinking science fiction for the next generation.  They need … The Architechs!

Very interesting. Eric H. Cline, in his recent book 1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed, portrays a time when bronze age empires of the eastern Mediterranean were riding high… then went into a simultaneous tailspin due to drought and their own inability to adapt.

Here’s a fascinating interview about the underpinnings of science fiction as a literary form. During George Slusser‘s 25-year curatorship, the Eaton Collection  at the University of California, Riverside, became the greatest archive of science fiction and fantasy in the world. It contains more than 100,000 volumes, ranging from the 1517 edition of Thomas More’s Utopia to the most recently published titles in all languages. The collection also includes journals, comic books, and 300,000 fanzines.

This interview elucidates many ways that SF remains a “rebel” genre in the halls of academia. Indeed, even in those places where SF is studied and appraised by scholars, it seems that just a few authors - maybe a dozen - are deemed acceptable.

(Aside: at one point George suggests that “…writers like David Brin, Gregory Benford, Robert A. Heinlein are rejected on “politicallycorrect” grounds... more »

(Aside: at one point George suggests that “…writers like David Brin, Gregory Benford, Robert A. Heinlein are rejected on “politically correct” grounds.”  Which I find amusing, since I have probably canceled Greg’s vote in sixteen out of the last twenty elections!  (For the last few, Greg has seen the light and now rails against the party of Fox-n-Bush.)  Indeed, my politics and overall zeitgeist coincide roughly with those of Kim Stanley Robinson!  Though yes, I admit I throw in a Heinleinian libertarian zig and an anti-PC zag or two.  As a contrarian, I don’t like polemical prescribers of any ilk. So yeah. That probably accounts for it.)

If literary SF matters do interest you, and you feel centers of excellence like the Eaton Collection are important, then you might read with dismay what SF-author and legend Nalo Hopkinson says about recent attempts to undermine the Eaton and possibly eliminate it.

Forty-seven U.S. federal Inspectors General signed a letter this month highlighting problems with access to federal records — problems they say slow their investigations and threaten their independence. In fact, the current use of IGs is scandalous — with many of them forced into conflict-of-interest, owing their appointments to the very officials they are charged to scrutinize.

The notion of a separate “inspectorate” dates back to Sun Yat Sen, founder of the Chinese Republic, in 1911. If all departmental and agency IGs reported to a truly independent IGUS, the shift could be so simple that the bill might fit on one page. Yet citizen confidence and trust could be multiplied several-fold.___

I've been called out to the ALS ice challenge by a great sci fi reader names Brady Mertens (see below). Well… okay. Sounds refreshing and bracing for summer - so I’ll do it shirtless.  But let’s do this correctly.  I will donate $25 to the ALS site, ASAP.  Then, when TEN of you have announced that YOU have likewise donated, I will go ahead. I’ll do this thing and post video online. Sound fair?

Here is Brady’s challenge.  (I have the best looking readers!)

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has published a guide to using cell phones if you are going to a protest of other zone of potentially tense interaction with police.

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2014/08/cell-phone-guide-protesters-updated-2014-edition

Good, practical advice. I have long urge folks to join EFF as one of their dozen or so "proxy power associations.  I do NOT always agree with them!  That does not matter as much as ensuring they -- and the ACLU etc -- remain out there and untrammeled.

A new video demonstrates how close SpaceX is to having a truly reusable rocket. Yes, books have trailers too!  Some of you have seen  the amazing video preview-trailer for Existence, with incredible art by Patrick Farley! http://www.tinyurl.com/exist-trailer

Re the Ferguson mess: Mike Gannis offers the following - which boils down to Transparency!  “The most basic problem is that we will never know for certain what happened. Why? Because the Ferguson cruiser did not have a camera recording the incident. That's simply not credible. "Law" "enforcement" in Ferguson apparently has at its disposal tear gas, riot gear, armored vehicles and machine guns ... but not a dashcam. That's ridiculous. I remember a few years ago when my one-man police department in New Hampshire purchased a camera for its cruiser. It's about as cheap and basic a police expense as there is.

“And, if we have to have federal subsidy programs for municipal police departments, we should scrap the one that gives them the second-hand military hardware from Tikrit and Kandahar and replace it with one that ensures every patrol car has a camera.”

I remember a few years ago when my one-man police department in New Hampshire purchased a camera for its cruiser. It's about as cheap and basic a police expense as there is.

“And, if we have to have federal subsidy programs for municipal police departments, we should scrap the one that gives them the second-hand military hardware from Tikrit and Kandahar and replace it with one that ensures every patrol car has a camera.”___

Look, I favor what President Obama is doing right now in Iraq.  He managed to finesse the departure of that piece-of-work Maliki and the most help is going to the proved-moderates in the region, the Kurds.  The doctrines and tactics being used are precisely those preferred by Democratic Presidents, who love special forces and surgical air power, as opposed to the Patton-pretender spasms of GOP prexies, post-Eisenhower

Having said that, I watched footage of some of the recent air-strikes.  And yes, they have helped the Kurds regather their spirits and retake the Mosul Dam, so it could not be sabotaged, hurting millions.  Still, look at the footage.  Using a $500,000 Hellfire missile to take out a ... $12,000 pickup truck?  Sure, you get far more than a million dollars in psychological effects, but yet...

... one good old warthog A-10 or an AC-130 would accomplish, in one sortie, more than the Hellfire-bearing a/F-18s will in a month, at this rate.  And for those of you offended by arm-chair-general war talk?  Sorry. But we are not yet in the world we want.  Nor will we ever get there, if troglodytism like ISIL prevails.  Being progressive does not mean you have to be a sap.___

Do you subscribe to Forbes?  Have you noticed a string of stories lately that are… well… very friendly to China?  Making excuses for  the mercantilist model and a (shall we say) “casual” view of intellectual property?  Hm, well, this didn’t take long… after the magazine was purchased by a Hong Kong consortium with strong Beijing ties.  Perhaps you might try getting business news from… what? Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal?  Keep searching.

While we're on the (AI) subject... Ever hear of “neuromorphic architecture?”  SIlicon chip design that uses transistors — (5 billion of them in the latest IBM chip) - to create analogues of the nonlinear response patterns of biological neurons.  The latest version, from IBM, is called “True North” and it is simply spectacular.  Its prodigious pattern recognition capabilities are only matched by its stunning (by four orders of magnitude(!)) power efficiency.  This is where Moore’s Law, augmented by new neuronal and parallelism software, may truly start delivering.

Now… to keep what we produce sane?  And where on the chip - pray tell - do the Three Laws reside?

Every fiction is an illusion, of course. The very real danger here is man’s tendency to look to his illusion for inspiration, which is the foundation on which we build society. “

I make essentially the same point in a dozen places, across the last 20 years, but especially here, where I describe _why modern film directors an authors are inflicting a tsunami of despairing tales upon us… not because any but a few of them actually believe it, but out of storytelling laziness, pure and simple. The “idiot plot” syndrome, in which it is just a lot easier to put your characters in dramatic jeopardy if you start with the assumption the civilization is useless and all our neighbors are foolish sheep.  http://www.davidbrin.com/idiotplot.html

Solana approaches the whole problem from more of an artistic plaint. But he is on-target when he concludes: “Our dystopian obsession has grown up in our nightmares as a true monster, which can only be countered by something truly beautiful. Simply, we need a hero. Our fears are demons in our fiction placing our utopia at risk, but we must not run from them. We must stand up and defeat them.”___

America's transportation infrastructure, once an engine of mobility and productivity, has fallen into such disrepair that it's become an economic albatross. Consumers shell out billions of dollars for extra car repairs every year. Insufficient and poorly maintained roads mean costly bottlenecks for businesses, which discourage expansion and hobble American companies competing in the global economy.  We all have heard of 60,000 bridges in desperate need of maintenance.  Why is almost nothing being done?

At a time of steeply declining budget deficits (always true during democratic administrations and never true during GOP ones) it might seem simple to put middle class blokes back to work, stimulating the economy with high velocity cash while fixing the damage and getting tons of benefits.  One obstacle though.  The do-nothing US House of Representatives… the laziest and leastaccom... more »

Moreover, several gopper congressfolk have OPENLY admitted their reason — that the resulting improvements and economic boost might help democrats at the polls.  It is the Hastert Rule.  Never cooperate or negotiate in good faith with democrats, ever.  (The last GOP leader who did that - Newt Gingrich - was jettisoned by Hastert, DeLay, Boehner and other leaders of the madness that has taken over today’s Republican Party.)

Anyone who continues to support these monsters is a supporter of outright treason.

Both Greg Bear and I have been talking about this for a long time… Greg in great detail in transfixing novels.  Is your micro-biome affecting your behavior… for its own self-interest?  We know that the paramecium Toxoplasma may be altering the personalities of perhaps half a billion people.

In our guts, bacteria make some of the same chemicals that our neurons use to communicate with one another, such as dopamine and serotonin. And the microbes can deliver these neurological molecules to the dense web of nerve endings that line the gastrointestinal tract.
A number of recent studies have shown that gut bacteria can use these signals to alter the biochemistry of the brain. Compared with ordinary mice, those raised free of germs behave differently in a number of ways. They are more anxious, for example, and have impaired memory.http:... more »

The steady backpedaling of denialists would be impressive, if it weren’t both pathetic and staggeringly harmful to all of our grandchildren.  Five years ago, the Fox-propelled cant was “the glaciers aren’t melting! They are advancing and we face a new Ice Age!”

Then came word that the US Navy is desperately playing catch-up in the Arctic as the Russians establish a dozen new bases to exploit the rapidly-melting icecap and Chinese freighters ply the Northwest Passage.  Films like CHASING ICE — which is fantastic, gorgeous, dramatic and stunning — show before your very eyes the steady retreat of the glaciers… and it comes down to every last one of them.

So, the next fall back position?  “It’s variability! There’s melting in the Arctic and the north, okay,  but cooling in the Antarctic!”

So, the next fall back position?  “It’s variability! There’s melting in the Arctic and the north, okay,  but cooling in the Antarctic!”

Um… no.  Fox glommed onto the fact that SNOWFALL has increased at the south pole. And yes it has… because evaporation has increased in the surrounding antarctic seas — an absolute proved fact as they warm up and the Ross Ice Sheet melts and drifts away.  The snowfall is more evidence of global warming. Duh. So what’s next?

“Okay, it’s all melting, but it has nothing to do with CO2!"

Except, well, there's also this thing called worldwide oceanic acidification, in which Ph levels have fallen a whole tenth of a point, a staggering change that may lead to greater plunges that are already noticeably affecting fisheries across the globe.  The Ph change is absolute, clear, inarguable... and only one mechanism can POSSIBLY be responsible, carbonic acid derived from water-absorbed CO2, whose levels have been climbing rapidly due to human generated... yes... pollution.

Acidification is such a profound and total death slam that denialist cultists simply change the subject, as quickly as possible, pointing somewhere else and shouting "squirrel!"

But let's be clear. Let me paraphrase for you the current denialist catechism:

“Okay, it’s all melting, but it’s natural! So what if we are urged to take moderate precautions by 99% of those scientists who actually understand the Navier Stokes and gas balance and radiative transport equations and cellular automata atmospheric models, that have successfully simulated climate on six planets and transformed the old two hour weather report into a ten day marvel! ALL of those super-smart, highly competitive men and women are — in fact — herd-following lemmings! Dullard cowards, clutching teensy climate “grants.” (Even though almost no such “grants” actually exist, and Fox has never offered us a list of them to back up their claim.)

“In any event, it is far more plausible that ALL of the smart folks have conspired to spread alarmist nonsense… than that we might listen to experts and take reasonable, moderate precautions, just on the off chance that 99% of those who actually know something about all this might (maybe) have a clue.”

Does that just about sum it up? The “reasoning why denialists refuse even to negotiate mild increases in energy efficiency R&D, that would benefit us all, even if global warming proved to be a myth?  TWODA… Things We Ought to be Doing Anyway. Even if 99% of scientists are fools.

http://news.discovery.com/earth/global-warming/humans-are-to-blame-for-rapidly-melting-glaciers-140814.htm

Face it, you are cultists, boys. And when the world fills with climate refugees, we who tried will happily help those refugees move into your house.  You can keep the flooded doomsday prepper basement.___

Computer vision is embedded in toilets, urinals, hand- wash faucets, as well as those domes in the ceilings that monitor you in buildings like banks and casinos (and soon everywhere.)  Sousveillance maven and Toronto professor Steve Mann has a fascinating paper describing methods to easily reveal the scanning field of such visual sensing systems.

“Moving a wand through space, while tracking its exact 3D position in space, makes visible the otherwise invisible “rays of sight” that emenate from cameras. This capacity to sense, measure, and visualize vision, is useful in liability, insurance, safety, and risk assessment, as well as privacy/priveillance assessment, criminology, urban planning, design, and (sur/sous)veillance studies.”

This capacity to sense, measure, and visualize vision, is useful in liability, insurance, safety, and risk assessment, as well as privacy/priveillance assessment, criminology, urban planning, design, and (sur/sous)veillance studies.”

On the left side of the spectrum, and in some places on the right,  folks are asking whether  "Obama is playing into Bush's bad policies. Now he's taking the U.S. back into Iraq with more bombing."

Sorry, this is a wrongheaded reflex. Back in 2002-2003, the issue was never "should Saddam Hussein be toppled and replaced?" Nor was it "should the Taliban - who supported and helped bi Laden to attack us be toppled and replaced?"  We needed to do both things. If you actually (astonishingly) think that there will be any resemblance between the coming Obama-led engagement and the Bushite quagmires, you really need to read about the diametrically opposite ways that democrats and republicans wage war:

Here’s a somewhat too-radical but interesting essay about how the Confederacy lost phase one of the Civil War, in 1865, then won phase two with the collapse of Reconstruction and minority rights, in 1877. Indeed, things have swung back and forth, ever since, including the Civil Rights phase that was won by Blue America - finally crushing the vileness of segregation - but at a cost that resulted in the complete flip-reversal of the two US political parties.  In that light, today’s raging “culture war” is only the latest phase.

… but the crux is clear; instead of wearing three-cornered hats, our Tea Party neighbors should wear gray, for they are the neo-confederate party. In fact, more and more of them are realizing this.  Their devotion to the rising, worldwide oligarchy is identical to the feudal loyalty that their forebears gave to plantation lords. The aim - to tear down the future-oriented, change-welcoming, scientific and pragmatic Blue America, in order to replace it with classic nostalgia and feudal hierarchy - is identical to that of the southern tories who rode with Cornwallis and Tarleton.

My own, earlier take: The Civil War started in 1852, when waves of southern irregular cavalry began 8 years of violent raids into Northern states to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. This was never the “war of northern aggression.” It was the diametric opposite. And it is time to re-learn the Battle Hymnn of the Republic.

Are many asteroids “rubble piles” held together by molecular forces, in addition to very weak gravity?  It seems that is the case for near Earth crosser 1950 DA… and the implications — for resource-mining as well as countering potentially dangerous ones — are very complicated.  It is a good thing we are forging forward to find out.  Alas, the Space.com reporter might get straight the meaning of “centripetal” vs “centrifugal.”

Going on vacation for a month, amid crises, the GOP House was already the laziest in the history of the Republic.  Now, after screeching about a few thousand children (as Obama strives to send at least half of them back home), the “representatives” have refused to provide any new funding to the Border Patrol or immigration courts to deal with the added work load.  Not one cent.

This perfectly fits what I predicted, in describing how both parties DO exactly the opposite of their reputations, when it comes to immigration... and maybe a dozen other issues -- like military readiness and fiscal responsibility.  If you believe one word these bozos ever say, you’ve settle what you are, and I have a bridge to sell you.

Paul Krugman is often on-target, though I suspect he kind of dumbs down his columns. Paul Krugman is in a perfect position to accomplish what I cannot (though I’ve tried.)  Getting liberals (not leftists) to rediscover the founder of their movement — Adam Smith — who know that oligarchy has always been far worse an enemy of enterprise than civil servant regulators ever were.

Yes, libertarians should criticize bureaucracy!  That’s their role and it’s an important one — that they are currently failing! Because they have allowed themselves to become oligarchy’s tools, devoid of common sense.

A Quora question I was recently asked: "Which historical figure is least recognized for having caused a tremendous amount of harm, and what harm did they do?"

Here's a stab at it.

Crassus helped destroy the Roman Assemblies, which till then had balanced the Patrician Senate, keeping Rome a vibrant and middle class society. He also crushed Spartacus, instead of reforming slavery, which would have ended the revolt.

La Malinche is well-known down south but most Anglos are unaware of how many native Americans died because she helped Cortez.

In 1424, the Yongle Emperor died. He had been a Chinese exception, outward-looking and progressive, he supported the ambitious voyages of Admiral Zheng He. His successor, the Hongxi Emperor (r. 1424–1425), stopped those voyages which, if they had continued, might have sailed into Lisbon Harbor while Prince Henry theN... more »

Andrew Jackson is on our $20 bill.  He managed to delay the Civil War by 30 years and that makes up for the fact that he was a wretched man who did terrible harm to US governance and betrayed his Cherokee friends.

I could go on.

Here’s an algorithm that could use Facebook Likes alone to reliably determine six million users’ private traits like their sexual orientation, IQ, religious beliefs, life satisfaction, and personality traits—even when the Likes seemingly had nothing to do with the traits in question.  Do not get outraged.  This is absolutely inevitable!  What you can do is shift your passion over to sousveillance.

Just saw LUCY with my family Friday night.  Now, first off, I am a Luc Besson fan — though I always make sure to tune down my IQ and mental age dials, whenever I go to see one of his films.   I did that for LUCY and was rewarded by having a very good time.  Though on this occasion… alas… well, this film was kind of tragic, because the IQ downshift should not have been necessary!  Look, I am not looking for something as deeply thought provoking as Leslie Dixon's wondrous screenplay for LIMITLESS...

Likewise, some of the most "magical" scenes could so easily have been replaced with equally cool tech-manipupation stuff.

Having said that... LUCY has many moving and thoughtful scenes, along with gobs of Luc Besson's trademark fun. And it does not go for the cheap idiot plot that is so common these days -- that all our human institutions, neighbors and professionals are useless fools.  Indeed, most are portrayed here as fairly smart and trying very hard.

Especially, in the penultimate scene, when Morgan Freeman holds the super USB drive containing… well… no spoiler. But it represents a notion that is unabashedly Faustian and friendly to unlimited human ambition.  That is refreshing, compared to the cliched, Crichtonian-nostalgic rant against science that pervades most media.  I saw this also in the lovely-gentle film HER.

The crux? I found myself won over more than I expected to be.  Many good aspects of the film far outweighed howlers — like the ditzy villains. This is what Luc Besson does. As in The Fifth Element, this film is like a golden retriever who jumps on your lap and licks your face and pours love all over you until you surrender.___
