Whiterocks Beach, Killiney, Dublin, Ireland

I haven't been doing much photography recently for a variety of reasons but I am hoping to get back it a lot more regularly over the next few months.  I was flicking back through my photos from this year and decided to reprocess some of them.  This is one of them which I have never posted on G+ or over at my blog www.ghoughton.com.

Ballydowane Sea Stack, Co Waterford, Ireland

Ballydowane Cove is part of the copper coast UNESCO geopark in Co Waterford, Ireland.  This section of the Irish coastline get its name for the mines along the coast which not only mined copper but also lead and silver.  

I used a medium telephoto lens with a 10 Stop ND and a 2 stop soft grad to get the shot.  The photo is a 5 shot panoramic which I combined in PTgui pro to get the stitch.  I would normally just output the blended image but for this shot I chose to have both the blended image and individual layers as a single PSD file.  PTgui is great at aligning images but sometimes doesn't blend as good as photoshop which was the case with the clouds in this pano.  I opened the image in photoshop and then used auto-blend to blend the individual layers.  The important step here is to select seamless tones and colours toadjust ... more »

Hell Fire

I came across this photo the other day in my album. I decide to reprocess it as I thought I could now do the processing better.

The photo is the ruins of the Hell Fire Club which is located near the summit of Montpelier Hill, overlooking Dublin city, Ireland.  Legends and urban folklore including occult activities, brief appearances of the Devil, poltergeist and the dreaded Black Cat of Killakee make this a good subject for #moodymondayphoto .

The High Cross

Today Google announced that is is killing their RSS reader, Google Reader. As it is for millions of other users, Google Reader is a mission critical part of my day.

Google, I know you want to migrate us to G+. I get that. But your unceremonious axing of something so much loved and used as Reader makes me question my dependency on ANY Google product other than search.

Please reshare this if you agree. Maybe someone at Google will notice.

Anybody have a plugin from Lightroom to cloud storage that allows to manage uploading and keeps a library of the pictures on the cloud direct from lightroom?  I found one for Mosaic Archive - anybody use it? $12/month for 400GB storage.

I wasn't sure about this photo.  I tried something a little different having the wave breaking over the rocks.  Thanks for all the comments but am still undecided verging towards disliking the wave. Still, glad it in made the lightbox!

Santa Claus delivered this wonderfully inspiring book by David duChemin down my chimney this year. I have been reading it solidly since Christmas Day.

As the title suggests this is not a technical manual but a journey into the soul, thought process, story telling and the photographic vision behind the photos and in particular travel photography which is close to my heart.

This book left me wanting to jump onto the nearest aeroplane and go exploring and capturing the world.

There are some truly inspiring travel and in particular travel portraiture photos in this book.

I have already ordered David's book on Refining your Vision in Adobe Lightroom. Can't wait for it to arrive

Dawn on Greystones Beach

Managed to drag my tired head out of bed this morning and dove up to the south beach in Greystones, Co Wicklow, Ireland in time for sunrise.  Fortunately I heard the rain after I was out of bed, dressed and ready to head out the door or I might have just turned off the alarm and went back to sleep.

I am glad I didn't as I had a great morning splashing about in the surf with my camera.  I don't get to shoot at the beach too often and even though the sunrise was a little disappointing it was still a worthwhile trip.  Ended up soaked to the knees but didn't care.

Even managed to meet fellow G+'er +David Heath Williams on the beach!!  Was great to have a chat as the sun came up!

Sally Gap, Co Wicklow, Ireland

A shot from our photo club trip for the sunrise in the Wicklow Mountains.  The mist suppressed much of the sunrise but didn't stop us from shooting away the morning.  

This shot is a bracketed exposure which I tonemapped in Photomatix before finishing off in Lightroom.

We also did a little bit of deer stalking shooting thankfully only with cameras.  Managed to see a few stags in the distance which was amazing even if they were too far away to capture on camera.

We hit 25,000 Photo Walkers Worldwide!!!!! 

We're still 11-days away and we've already passed the 25,000 walker mark, which is AWESOME!!! We have walks in nearly 1,300 cities and now that the submission deadline for new cities has passed (yesterday) we're pretty much at the final number of cities (which is up around 150 more than last year).

You may have noticed but I am becoming obsessed with shooting Panoramic format photos.  Can't really say why, but for landscapes they are hard to beat.  

This latest one one is the sunset from Sunday night. Rather than shooting into the setting sun I shot off to the side for a picture of Sorrel Hill bathed in a really nice warm light.

Remember - The Military Graveyard, The Curragh, Co. Kildare, Ireland

Another photo from the old Military Graveyard in the Curragh. Co Kildare from Saturday.  This one is of a lone remembrance reef placed in the entrance to the graveyard.

The Military Graveyard, The Curragh, Co. Kildare, Ireland

Saturday evening provided a sunset with no much colour due to the general lack of clouds in the area but did provide a wonderful rich warm glow to the evening.  I decided to head out to the old british military graveyard from their time of the presence in Ireland dating from the mid 1800's to 1920's.  The graveyard is located in the Curragh, Co Kildare, Ireland, a large flat stretch of common land which includes the Curragh Camp army base and a racecourse.

Shooting directly into the low setting sun provided some wonderful shadows acting as lead-in lines from the rows of gravestones and I positioned the sun behind the cross to provided a silhouette of the stone and help block some of the directly light which may cause excessive flare.  The nearest cross provided some foreground interest is is bathed in the warmli... more »

The Grid - Kelby TV

August seems to have past me by without knowing and it has been an absolute age since I lasted posted, but I did have some very exciting news.

My images from my travel and landscape folder were selected for participation in the August blind critique episode of The Grid!!!!  Not only that, I got some great feedback from +Scott Kelby and +Matt Kloskowski on my photos.   These guys are hard but fair when it comes to critiques so I really was delighted.  Thanks Scott and Matt!

Dalkey, Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is a city on sea and presents within a 15 min drive of the city centre many small harbours, coves and bathing spots.  With a break in the weather at the weekend I could not resist to the chance a shooting some seascapes at one of these spots.

For a change, I headed down to Dalkey to see what I could find to shoot some long exposures.
