You are surprisingly funny XD. Especially since your tone of voice indicates you aren't even trying that hard.

Speaking of voice: How old are you? Dat high voice, doh. I bet if you screamed you could crack my screen....

Less snarky response to the video:

If rights obligate us to create institutions which secure those rights, it seems like we're obligated to create the ones which do the best job of securing those rights. In that case, how are we meant to determine that? I'd assume there's a consequentialist basis to this but how do we directly compare the consequences of living under 2 systems so we can pick the best one? We can't run a randomised controlled trial where half the countries are under one set of rules and half are under another.

More importantly, how do we trade off between different rights? If we only have negative rights of the traditional variety, then this isn't really a problem. There's just a list of a couple things we can't do. Under the institutional model, we need to create institutions which will consume resources in the process of performing their duties. How secure does each right need to be? How much money should go to police to protect you from violence/theft? How much to hospitals protecting you from desease? If these rights are absolute with no limits to the amount of resources they may consume, then all resources must be diverted to securing rights with no room for luxuries like consumer goods and lesure.

Congratulations, Comrade! Welcome to the Soviet Union!

(OK, I lied about it being less snarky.)___

Nitpick: A Planck time is just the time it takes a photon to travel one Planck length. A Planck length is physically significant - a Planck time is not. A Planck time is derived from other physical properties much the way the kilogram and the litre are derived from the mass and volume (respectively) of a 10cm*10cm*10cm cube of water. So, yes: you can divide Planck times. They aren't special - just really, really small.

On the video itself: Maybe you could argue that the future doesn't exist on the basis that things which one expects to exist in the future (the things you're making "true" statements about) don't exist concretely. A statement like "it will rain on Tuesday" is probabilistic. The person speaking expects that, on Tuesday, their statement will be validated. As such, you could say their statement lacks a truth value (like the number of hairs on... more »

A statement like "it will rain on Tuesday" is probabilistic. The person speaking expects that, on Tuesday, their statement will be validated. As such, you could say their statement lacks a truth value (like the number of hairs on Batman's head) until we actually arrive at the point in time when the statement can be confirmed or denied (ie: the future becomes the present). This still isn't Presentism, though, because statements about the past would still be true.

The main way I can see to get around that is, again, special relativity. If something has already come to pass from a certain frame of reference then it can have a truth value, since 'truth' holds still regardless of where you're standing. Are there any points in space/time which, right 'now', are completely unobservable from any point in space moving along any vector at any velocity?

I have two guesses: first, the singularity of a black hole - but maybe "objects" (loosely speaking since the inside of a black hole is freaky) inside the black hole can observe this place? It woulds be interesting to know if there are any philosophical theories that claim black holes don't exist on the inside but they do on the outside. The other possibility would be electrons orbiting an atom since their position is inherently probabilistic. This would be my strongest guess for something you simply can't make true future statements about.___

My view is based on what Bayesians call "prior probability". In the past, most testimony I've received from the people around me has been (mostly) true. As such, if I receive testimony from someone, the chance that they're telling the truth should be higher than 50%. If I have other evidence to go by regarding their trustworthiness, I can shift my prior probability of truth to account for that and end up with my posterior probability.

On the other hand, if most of the testimony I received was false, I'd be inclined to doubt it. I think most people unconsciously work like this. If person X lies to you often, you're less inclined to believe them than someone who usually tells the truth. In the case of X, p(truth) is too low to be easily believed.

For a random stranger, one's inclination to trust them comes not from the stranger's own actions, but from how frequently other strangers have been honest/dishonest. You generalise from those experiences.

(I think this is somewhat reductionist.)___

Ticked Off Trannies With Knives. I don't think I really have to say much more than that. We watched it last night and it was a hoot. If you like deadpan puns, campy banter and a tong and cheek since of humor this film is it. It's a little slow at times but it approaches most of it's shortcoming very cleverly. It's on Netflix check it out.   ___ #lol   #humor
