Paarl Rock

Was recently on holiday in the Western Cape... sooooo many pictures to go through ! ...this is the first one I've managed to edit.

The pic here shows the chains going up Paarl Rock in the town of Paarl in the Western Cape. Literally, a massive rock, or batholith (actually group of massive batholiths). The walk up is less strenuous than first appears and definitely worth it!

"Long Walk Home"

A lil snapshot taken across a field while on business trip last week in the North Eastern Cape. Poor kid has to walk miles across open grassland to and from school everyday.

'The Wild North-East'

The Northern reaches of the North Eastern Cape always reminds me of old Western films... I was in the region for business over the last few days and was treated to some amazing sights. Unfortunately I was in a rush so was unable to stop to take more photos... I did manage to pull over to catch this scene. The previous night the first rains came to the area after the long hot summer... Very lucky to be there at the right time.

"Timeless Nahoon"

Took this snapshot while walking along the beach on an absolutley gorgeous Summers day. No massive hotels, restaurants or any other beach-front developments to be seen... This pic could easily have been taken in the 1970's ...hence the film look :)

Rorschach Earth

Eventually got around to following my idea through to the finish... 

Here is presented an image of the Earth presented as a classic Rorschach test card. If you still can't see it...tilt your head to the left ;) 

Like most of my recent stuff (Most of which is still incomplete and unseen by anyone but myself) it is best seen as a large print, but I hope you all like it anyway :)

A Gun ?

My take on one one of Andy Warhol's 'Gun' artworks ... Going up on my wall at home. 

I find it quite thought provoking... I'll play the artist and not say what it makes me think/feel ... but leave it up to the viewer :)

Thoughts ? Feelings ? Opinions ?

Gone Fishing

A not too common site in South Africa. I came across a group of young men tending to their nets in a river in a near the agricultural town of Patensie in the Eastern Province. For the best part of the last decade this river has been near drying out completely due to persistent drought... thankfully heavy rains experienced this year have put an end to the drought, and given these men back a means of providing for their families.

"Magic Mushroom"

No seriously !

Always funny when staying in the quaint little hamlet of Hogsback, which is hidden in between mountains and forests and waterfalls, you can purchase legitimate "magic mushrooms" ! no designer drugs out here! haha

Once the street vendors (who are 99% high as kites..in a slightly funny way...not an "I'm-gonna-stab-you" way) finally realise you are not going to buy a Hogsback walking stick, or a wooden replica of the Hogsback hog, they approach, whispering in a rather comical way "I have mushrooms!! ... you want??"

...In case you were wondering... No... I did not see any unicorns on my trip, or see any new colours for the first time... lol... No shrooms for me thanks....well... except in a salad :)

"dead leaves - cold pool"

Not in a very happy place at the moment... when I saw this pool of leaves while on holiday at the weekend I first thought of the 'dead-marshes' scene in Lord of the Rings..

Just something about this chaotic yet serene scene that appeals to my current mood...

Woah ! ...been crazy busy over the last few weeks...so haven't been on the plus in a while... Awesome new layout !! 2 thumbs up!

Here's a pic from a trip for work I had a while back. I had to travel the looong road into the Xhosa homeland of the Transkei to meet with municipal officials from the town of Engcobo. travelling to my accomodation after my meetings I stopped at the side of the road to take this pic of a little village, with another village behind it...and more in the distance!

A very poor part of South Africa, but a very beautiful part none-the-less ! :)

"Van Stadens Bridges"

Picture form the bottom of the Van Stadens Pass a few mintues drive out of town. View is of old bridge which for decades was the only way through the gorge, and the massive single span concrete bridge built in the 70's in the background.

As beautiful as modern bridge is, it has an unpleasant history. It is the 'go-to' spot for people in town to commit suicide... a good few people take the leap every year.
Ironically a few hours drive is an identical bridge (The Bloukraans) which operates one of the highest bungee jumps in the world!

Good Dirty #shoemonday

Had awesome "Adventure Day" / One-day-holiday yesterday... took drive out to Storms River National park... b.e.a.utiful part of South Africa ! ... swam, kayak'd and to close out the day went on awesome run along one of the hiking trails in pouring rain ...swim halfway in massive pool under a waterfall before making our way back... dirty, muddy, wet... but Awesome time ! :)

Its been a while... had NO motivation or creativity in me these last few weeks... This new job, however nice, has taken it out of me! ... took a drive out in the country with my Dad this weekend... pretty much only decent shot I got off... but at least I've got camera in my hands again :)

Watched Star Trek First Contact on tv the other day... (can't believe came out in '96 !! ...damn I'm getting old ! haha) ... this section made my economist brain start to think... Is such a future possible? ... its certainly desirable.

I wrote about a thousand words before realising that to say all I wanted to say I'd have to write a few pages worth! Bottom line is... Are our world leaders trying to steer us into such a future? ..or are they clinging onto to the idea that capitalism is the one and only answer, and that it will be for generations to come?

The USA seems adamant that capitalism is the only way... some of their politicians even deride other countries with more socialist policies (most recently France was attacked...even though its people live longer, are healthier and happier, get free unlimited health care, have a lower unemployment rate etc etc)... more »

"Beach-View"

I know you sholdn't edit late at night when you're tired, but reaaally felt like playing with this pic :) ... Beach View is a small village outside my home town of Port Elizabeth... it has probably the most dramatic and stunning coastline for miles around. It looked to be pretty dull all day and not particularly good for seascapes but just before sunset the sky lightened up a bit and me and the folks decided to take make the trip and see how things looked... glad we did :)

Morality ?

Do you see these signs all around the world ? or only in Africa ?! ... some real dodgy, witch-craft, cruel and immoral people in this place ...

You find these signs all over my town. On street lamps, on post boxes, even pamphlets on your car windscreen offering quick abortions, penis enlargements and other crap. Witch-doctors to the rest of the world is just a "doctor" in South Africa for many people...

... Love the Irony of the Church in the background ...

Took a lil trip with my folks and my dogs to a stretch of near deserted coastline not far from town... Sky was a bit boring so decided to continue playing around with the new 50mm ... Still trying to find my own unique style, but I think I'm getting there... I kinda like the way this pic turned out... hope some of you guys do too :)

St Georges Park - Gate 2

St Georges Park (actually Crusader Grounds at St Georges Park) is the oldest test ground in South Africa (1st match England vs. SA in 1889)

Think I really should make a "things I discover on the way to the corner shop" album... keep finding interesting things! haha
