"Do you have a flag?"
Flag of Benin Empire
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benin_Empire
"The King of Benin can in a single day make 20,000 men ready for war, and, if need be, 180,000, and because of this he has great influence among all the surrounding peoples. . . . His authority stretches over many cities, towns and villages. There is no King thereabouts who, in the possession of so many beautiful cities and towns, is his equal."

Don’t make fun of renowned Dan Brown
The snobs and critics will have a field day with the US author’s latest work – but I’m not joining in.
The voice at the other end of the line gave a sigh, like a mighty oak toppling into a great river, or something else that didn’t sound like a sigh if you gave it a moment’s thought. “Who cares what the stupid critics say?” advised the literary agent. “They’re just snobs. You have millions of fans.”

Two Victorian women, Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland, race against each other around the world, countering the cultural inertia of their era.
No female reporter before Nellie Bly had ever seemed quite so audacious, so willing to risk personal safety in pursuit of a story. Bly went undercover, feigning insanity so that she might report firsthand on the mistreatment of the female patients of the Blackwell’s Island Insane Asylum. She trained with the boxing champion John L. Sullivan; she performed, with cheerfulness but not much success, as a chorus girl at the Academy of Music. She visited with a remarkable deaf, dumb, and blind nine-year-old girl in Boston by the name of Helen Keller. Once, to expose the workings of New York’s white slave trade, she even bought a baby.

Why Path is redundant.
I read recently that the social network Path has about 6 million users. Yet it seems to get a lot of mindshare.
The reason for that, I suspect, is that pundits like it. And pundits like it because their Facebook and Twitter accounts have become noisy with the endless chatter of strangers and content.
So they retreat into Path in order to find solace. Path prevents you from having more than 150 "friends." And so posting on Path feels intimate, rather than public.
Fans say they like Path because:
* It's just carefully chosen friends.
* It's beautifully designed.
* It doesn't have ads or app invitations.
But here on Google+, a few intimate friends sharing on a beautifully designed app free of ads and invitations is what we call a circle.
Path is a feature, not ... more »

Rooftop racetrack
What could possibly go wrong?
http://www.retronaut.com/2013/05/rooftop-racetrack/
“The Lingotto building, Turin, Italy, once housed a Fiat factory. Built between 1916 and 1923, the design had five floors, raw materials going in at the ground floor, and cars built on a line that went up through the building. Finished cars emerged at rooftop level, where there was a rooftop test track. It was the largest car factory in the world at the time. Le Corbusier called it “one of the most impressive sights in industry”, and “a guideline for town planning”.”

David Arenberg Reflects on Being Jewish in State Prison
I am always the last person to eat. It's part of a compromise I worked out with the skinheads who run the western state prison complex where I am incarcerated. Under this compromise, I'm allowed to sit at the whites' tables, but only after the "heads," and then the "woods," and then the "lames" have eaten. I am lower on the totem pole than all of them, the untouchable. I should feel lucky I'm allowed to eat at the whites' tables at all.

I need your vote for Spaceflight Training
No, this is not a joke. I mapped telescopes in space, and now If you send a tweet, I could be going to the Nastar Center for spaceflight training and going to see a space launch in November.
To vote - here's the super quick twitter link! https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=I%20vote%20%23spacecalnyc%20for%20%40spaceapps%20People%27s%20Choice%20Award!
Two weeks ago I went to the NYC NASA space apps hackathon. My team created an application that allows you to explore what telescopes are looking at and when. The site collates a ton of telescope data in one place, unifies it, and makes it pretty - as well as being accessible for astrophysicists. And yes - it includes a map of space.
We won the NYC hackathon, and we're in the running for the global challenge, along with 133 other teams. There are 4 'best in... more »

So, what does these pictures have in common?
They all depict places that doesn't exist. They're made in Terragen 2 and I find them eerily real. That just shows what the program can do in the hands of talented people, when I tried it, it looked more like some level in a game from -96...
