James Fridley11,035Guess it is time for an early night as #coffeemornings  approaches. Wonder who'll be there this time... Rants + coffee = Great Friday morning#CoffeeMornings2014-02-14 07:00:001
Jackie M1,883,703I'm all about shortcuts and sometimes it's just more convenient to use cooking aids like prepared sauces, spice mixes, etc. In this session, I'm going to cover some NEW products I've encountered, and talk about how you can incorporate them into your everyday meals.  I gave +Shae Marshall-Rae a bag of samples of AgroMas sauces which she's going to experiment with during the week, and I'm going to grill her on what she thinks as well as get her to cook them Live On Air :) Malaysian Flavours 7 - Prepared Sauces/Blends2014-01-19 10:30:0060
James Fridley11,035Every year Single Origin Rosters does a thank you party as their last day of trade for the year. This involves awesome coffee, canapés, and if other years are anything to go by, a live band.  If you are looking for an excuse to **cough** finally get off your arse on a Friday morning and visit #coffeemornings  then this is the one that you want to come to. See you thereFinal #coffeemornings for 2013 (Xmas Edition) {Public}2013-12-20 08:30:0015
James Fridley11,035Just a quick reminder that tomorrow being Friday means that it is time to gather around a cafe table and chat about pretty much anything.  N.B. Single Origin is CLOSED for renovations. Tomorrow will be at Corduroy Cafe (near the Hollywood Hotel) See you there?Sydney #CoffeeMornings2013-05-03 07:00:001
James Fridley11,035Can not believe it is Friday already. Time for more coffee.... of course... :-) See you there?Sydney #coffeemornings2013-03-22 07:00:001
James Fridley11,035Yup, it is that time of week again when we stare disbelievingly at the calendar and think "How the hell is it Friday already"... which also means it is time for us to gather together and communally rant about this and that over a great cup of coffee. See you there at #coffeemornings  ?Sydney #coffeemornings2013-03-15 07:00:003
James Fridley11,035Just in case people need a bit of a mental nudge, yes... tomorrow is Friday... again.... And yes... #coffeemornings  is on... and yes.... I'll be there from 7am.... but no ... that doesn't mean you can't arrive at 8am... :-) See you there?Sydney #coffeemornings2013-03-08 07:00:001
James Fridley11,035Yup... it is back on again. Last week caught a few people out with #fastbreak  but this week #coffeemornings  is a go. See you there?Sydney #coffeemornings2013-03-01 07:00:001

James Fridley11,035Yup... this week the cafe is open and #coffeemornings  will be on for young and old. Time to grab a seat, a cup of coffee and prepare to save the world one rant at a time... :-)Sydney #coffeemornings2013-01-18 07:00:002
James Fridley11,035Only a few more hours until the first Sydney #coffeemornings  for the year... Wonder who will be there :-)Sydney #coffeemornings2013-01-10 21:00:002
James Fridley11,035If there is one #coffeemornings to attend each year, this is the one you can not and should not miss. There will be food (a range of delicious canapés), there will be dancing and music (provided by a live band on the back of a truck), and yes.... there will be a tonne of coffee. This will be your last chance to visit Single Origin in 2012 as they shut down for the Xmas break, so make no excuses, set no other plans, don't eat breakfast before you come, and I will see you there.#coffeemornings Xmas Party2012-12-21 07:00:004

The #coffeehunt continues, with CoffeeHunt
Needed a new home for my coffee obsession, and so with the launch of CoffeeHunt, there's a space for news, cafe recommendations, a calendar of coffee events, WBC focused content and even a Vodcast.

Not a bad start. Finally I can focus on the Sydney/NSW Specialty Coffee industry the way it deserves.

New Story Album Format

Saw the new format in Google Photos for the Albums, and so had to give it a try. Having just had a trip down to Melbourne I thought it would be the perfect chance.

Overall I found it much more flexible than the old Story mode, and being able to drag and drop pictures, maps, and other elements around was great, but it still could use some improvements...

1) Would be good to be able to edit the text formatting in the text blocks, particularly as some of the blocks I want to use as sub-headings.
2) Being able to add comments on photos would be useful, as it was possible with the Story mode previously.
3) Would be great to have the locations shown on a map in a sub-heading like format.
4) it would be great to be able to use the video editor from the Google Photos video creator to crop videos.

With the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (#MICE2016) fast approaching, I am getting to the realistic end of my crowd funding campaign to afford my trip there to judge. While I have received a few generous donations, so far it is not enough to cover the costs of the 4 days I will be in Melbourne. If you were ever planning on shouting me a coffee (or more), now is the time to do it. Head to gofundme.com/bitterblissmice and help this #coffeegeek volunteer his time to be a sensory judge at this year's Australian Barista Championship.

By which of course i mean the 3xact opposite. I need to lock dowm the ability to install apps, visit certain websites and i would also like some WiFi control or external lock down control (with or with out a timer).

*Sydney Coffee.... Come get some...*
Just got another request on Twitter that went something like "Hey Fridley... Got a recommendation for a cafe near (insert suburb)..?". Why yes... I certainly do. And just in case anyone else has a similar question, let me help you out.

Even though I have a bunch of cafes yet to visit this year, many that were on my recommended cafe lists in years past (green pins) and a few that need to write a new review for (orange pins), there are a heap of cafes I can recommend in Sydney for people who love awesome coffee (red pins) and some cafes... that are a must visit (golden cups).

And because I realise that many out of town ppl might also like my map, I've even thrown in a couple of POI in Sydney just cause I can (ramen, burgers, scenic, etc).

IF you do use this map and IF it proves valuable to you, how about you show it in a value for value model. Get an awesome cup of coffee? Maybe it was amazing? How about you shout me one at gofundme.com/bitterblissmice and help me get to #MICE 2016

Don't like that option or want it to be secret? No worries. Inside the map, click on one of the "Support BitterBliss" pins and then the link in there will take you to a PayPal page where you can donate to your hearts content.

It costs a LOT of $$ and time to go around and review cafes, and while I see it as valuable training to be the best sensory judge I can be, getting your support would be MASSIVE!!

P.S. This map is a work in progress. Some cafes might move, or disappear, but just as likely, I have missed your local favourite, so how about you let me know where it is so I can check it out. Just go to http://frid.co/2016suggestcafe___

During a open day at a local high school, when I asked what sort of online content does the school use, and do they do any podcasts or videos for their students, he said that while that school didn't, he highly recommended WooTube https://www.youtube.com/user/misterwootube which having watched the channel introduction and one of the videos, I also recommend that anyone trying to deal with high school maths will find these video useful.

Next step is to try to get my son addicted to watching them.... lol

As someone trying to learn more about the sensory world of coffee, I found this background into what went into the Sensory Lexicon very interesting. I just wish that we had better access to the flavours and aromas that went into creating this standard in Australia so that we could also standardise the strengths of flavours and aromas in our coffees....

One of the reasons I can't see me ever trying to print out a bunch of shirts (much cheaper than getting people to order their own) is the increasing range of colours and styles available.

About the only thing I miss out on is that I never know exactly who is buying them, but that people do is one of ways that I can afford to drink as much coffee as I do, and for that I am grateful.

Like these designs? Check out http://frid.co/portafilter

Challenge 4 - Filter coffee
Some might say this is a rehash of the #nomilk challenge, but instead it is more of a focus of the correlation between the time you take to drink a coffee and the reward.

So the focus here for you is to find a great filter coffee, doesn't matter if you choose a #v60, #aeropress, #chemex or #batchbrew to make the coffee, but I do recommend that you ask your "coffee professional" for their recommendation of which single origin coffee is tasting the best. I don't recommend that you have a blend or espresso roast coffee for this challenge as the flavours we are looking for might not be there.

So order your coffee, and when it comes out to you it'll be hot, so don't drink it. Stick your nose in the steam and take a giant whiff. Your can get more aroma when the coffee is hot. So are you ready to drink it yet? NO!

Touch the side of the cup and feel how hot it is. We are looking for 50C(120F) before we start drinking. Then let it cool down more between each sip. What happens? Does it change?

More details can be found online at https://www.bitterbliss.com/filter-coffee/

As always, if you have a dollar or 5 to shout me a coffee and make my trip to #MICE2016 a reality, please head to gofundme.com/bitterblissmice ___

New Cafes in Sydney to Try?

Decided to make a section on my Sydney Coffee Map (http://frid.co/2016sydcoffee) for new cafes that I have yet to try. Any come to mind that I should be including?

Challenge 3 - Baristas Choice

Not only is this one of my favourite coffee challenges, this is how day to day I try to drink coffee. When you go to a cafe, you maybe get to try 1 or 2 coffees. As a coffee professional, the barista will be best equipped to tell you what is tasting awesome on any particular day.

So how does it work? Walk into a cafe and seem interested. Ask what single origin coffees are available today, and if there is more than one, which they would recommend, and why. Then ask how they would recommend that you have it.

Don't be put aside with a "what do you normally have", as this is an easy out. Use this as an opportunity to try something the you would not have otherwise tried.

This sort of challenge explains exactly why I love being a sensory judge, and why going to #MICE2016 is so important to me. It is a chance to experience the best coffee has to offer, and I need your help to get there Gofundme.com/bitterblissmice

Without your help, I won't be able to go to judge at MICE this year. If $5 is too much, how about $1. Gofundme.com/bitterblissmice will provide only funds I have for this trip, and without judging at nationals, I won't be able to gain certification for becoming a sensory judge at the WBC. Please donate what you can or at the very least share this information as far as you can. Many thanks in advance. ___

Challenge 2 - No Milk
While adding milk to coffee certainly does add a pleasing sweet creaminess (and an extra 100+ calories to your cup), that can sometimes highlight the flavours roasters have roasted into their coffees... it is more likely to hide the broader range of potential flavours you coffee exhibits.

So that you don't miss out on all the "potential" that your coffee has for you, spend a whole day drinking coffee with no milk. Unfortunately for some, this means that as you remove the blanket cover of the milk, you may experience some intensely bitter, burnt or plastic like characteristics in your coffee. It is important to know that there is a lot of coffee out there, good and bad, and our goal is to enjoy the best coffee has to offer.

After heading to #bodum Australia's head office yesterday to talk about coffee, it might be time for a refresher course via my BitterBliss coffee challenges, so feel free to play along.

Challenge 1 - No Sugar
While a bit more of a challenge for some than others, removing the sugar from your morning cup of coffee is not only better for you (with fewer calories), you are more able to consciously taste and enjoy the coffee that you are drinking. So today for at least one of you coffees go sans-sugar.

"EASY" you say? Ah.. you already have no sugar in your coffee? Then your challenge is that much harder. I want to to take 2 good teaspoons of sugar and mix it into your coffee, and see how the other side enjoy their coffee.

N. B. You may find that (either way) you don't enjoy the flavour of the coffee. This could be because you are on your first step... more »

Time for the renewal to begin anew

Was at a cafe today giving out a link to my Melbourne cafe map and realised that now we are in 2016, all my maps are showing their age....

And so... the mission has begun anew to renew my Sydney map (and the other ones in due course). This map is still a work in progress, and so some cafes may need to be added, changed or rearranged... but at least I've made a start.

Want to see where it is so far..?? Then head to http://frid.co/2016sydcoffee

In the good old "Value for Value" model, if you find any value in this map or its recommendations, feel free to support this project with whatever you think is fair at http://frid.co/supportbitterbliss

Just finished listening to "Seveneves" by Neil Stephenson, and for a book that I thoroughly enjoyed the beginning, middle and even the start of the end, perhaps because I enjoyed it so much, it didn't finish in a way that seemed to complete the story. Certainly worth a read, especially if you are curious what would happen if the moon suddenly exploded into 7 pieces, but also because this is more of two stories than one.

Happy public holiday day.!!!

For while I wish that this day was used to reflect on the lives, cultures, successes and failures of this wonderful country, with a focus on how through education, infrastructure and aspiration goals we can all strive to make it a better place for future Australians... we do a much better job having a BBQ, a brew or 6, throwing on those apathetic blinders, and having a ripper of a public holiday.

So I guess... if thinking too much isn't your thing, enjoy you day off, and remember that while Australia is (very) likely the best country to live in, it is only so because of the millions of lives, their experiences and sacrifices that we have what we have.

Mate, have a ripper of a public holiday day.

Around and around the sun I go,
While where I'll stop no one knows,
At this point all I can say,
Is that I've survived yet another birthday.

Comparing this year to those long gone,
Is best avoided at this point in time,
But with a dram of single malt in hand,
Getting a year older doesn't seem so bad.

.......................................
Many thanks for the Bday wishes, but more so, for the shared moments and friendships throughout the last year.

Rain check on annual #FridleyWhiskyFest

Just in case anyone missed me mentioning it on Twitter, I am going to skip my yearly night at Baxter's Inn this year on Burn's night.

Instead, if you have the time, pour yourself a decent dram, and drink to good friends, great opportunities, and better days.

It'll no doubt be back on again next year.

New Years seen through a dram of scotch

Starring at a world lit with fireworks and booze,
Shared with friends or family for those lucky enough to choose,
We've reached the end of yet another year,
That we've made it this far is worth at least a cheer... or a beer.

It's been a hard one for many, myself included,
Of unmet expectations only slightly deluded,
Where expected highs postponed their appearance,
With fingertips left raw as they grasped the meaningless.

Yet not all was lost this orbit of the sun,
From the infectious smiles of both my sons,
To the time shared with friends and family,
While fleeting there were magical moments a plenty.

Perhaps navel gazing with a dram in hand,

As belly lint a plenty I was bound to find,
That starchy fluff of a year gone by.

But New Years thankfully runs a bit deeper,
As not just the past but the future we speak of,
With those resolutions amassed before us,
We grow hopeful of potential well earned kindness.

As so to those possible happy days ahead,
I raise my glass and bow my head,
Wishing you and yours a happy new year,
Cause 2016....yup....it's here... ___
