Today a made a 3D printed key for my Mini just to prove it could be done.  I was talking with a locksmith that was at my work today and we were discussing how 3D printing technology would change his profession.  I told him I could take a photo of a key and print a replacement using the photo as reference.  He said it was impossible.  Sounds like a challenge to me.  Thirty two minutes later... Video of it starting the car Mini Cooper 3D printed key test

Here's a very good Verge report on cops wearing on-body cameras. If cops ended up being the only ones who bought Segways, I wonder whether they'll be the biggest market for Google Glass. 
The trend toward wearable cameras among officials will also mean that police will defend the notion that what happens in public is public. And it will mean that they can -- or rather, should -- have no complaint about being taped as public officials working in public.

Expected results:

1) Legit users are harassed due to IP address mix-ups, etc.  Remember you must pay to file an appeal.

2) Proxy services see a massive up-tick in use.

3) Public Wi-Fi access points in small stores, etc. are decimated.

4) Relatively visible Torrent-based systems are even more rapidly replaced with completely underground and well-hidden systems.

5) In relatively short order, the MPAA et al. will be back with their Congressional supporters again demanding that the Internet be remade to protect their obsolete 20th century profit center models, no matter what the costs.

Why I just bought a Chromebook Pixel

I have been living in Googleland -- on my Android phone and tablet and my Chromebook -- for a few months now. It's a happy place up here in the cloud. I haven't been down below to dark dens of the Microsoft Empire since.

The Chromebook -- I have the $249 Samsung model -- works quite well now. I had a problem for sometime with pages refreshing too often and at inconvenient moments because of limited memory. But helpful fellow users gave me a new setting that makes the machine do a better job of swapping memory and now I'm finding that it's quite stable. It stores docs and email locally and so I've been able to work on the plane and I've found I can do everything I needed to do using Microsoft Word et al. The keyboard's nice. The screen's a bit lite. But the battery power is great.

A Copyright Case to Watch

I remember giving a talk back in 1994, arguing that a non-fiction book was essentially a user interface to a body of information. I predicted that one day controlling the table of contents of a book, rather than its actual contents, might well be a focus of copyright and digital rights management.  (An article from 1995, http://oreilly.com/tim/articles/pubmod.html, contains some of these ideas, but not the prediction about DRM and copyright on tables of contents.)

That prediction has now come to pass, as textbook publishers sue a startup called Boundless Learning (disclosure: I am an adviser) for organizing free educational content in the same order as popular textbooks.  The Slate article linked below lays out the issues.

You know what's extremely sad about Google+ today? The right people at Google aren't using it. The company still doesn't have social in its culture. When users need help, they can't easily get it - even when they try to use official channels. So, where do they turn? Social media.

Google / YouTube have been silent about the issue discussed in this video, and none of the tech press are covering it. I've seen several tweets come through to reinforce what +David Di Franco and I are experiencing, yet... we have no answers from Google / YouTube.

THERE IS A PROBLEM WHERE PEOPLE WHO ARE ACTIVELY SUBSCRIBED TO A CHANNEL ARE FINDING THAT THEY ARE BEING UNSUBSCRIBED AT RANDOM. WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT INACTIVE USERS, HERE.

We don't know who to talk to - not because the right person doesn't exist, but because we don't know where or how to find the right... more »
