Shooting an entire menu

Brace yourself - this post will be a bit long...

First of all the obvious: This shot is of the days special at a coffee bar/restaurant and the light is from the window behind to the right and above. I did not use any reflectors. No special styling has been done (too much sauce in my opinion), it was just a "Let's get a picture" moment. The machine in the background is a roasting machine for small test batches of coffee.

Here is the thing: A couple of weeks ago, the chef at this place asked me to photograph the entire menu. And I would love to do it!

I don't see any problems having enough light and a good place to work. So that makes things a bit easier. What I am thinking about though, is what style to use for a job like that?

The Best Place In The World.

This is my favourite place, J. Atkinson's Coffee Roasters in Lancaster (thecoffeehopper.com). Walking in is like being taken back 200 years in time. Every piece of equipment they use in this place, from roasting the coffee beans to scooping them into bags, has been lovingly maintained and cared for for decades. Even their Whitmee Coffee Roaster, from the 1930s, is in full working order and still wafts that intoxicating fresh coffee smell out to the streets of Lancaster!

This is why I love this place. It's clear there's a passion and love for coffee and tea here; it's in the shop's DNA and absorbed deep into every draw, pot, cup and cannister. 

I wonder if +Trey Ratcliff has ever had tea or coffee from this place? He should. =]

Danish author Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen, famous for Out of Africa, Seven Gothic Tales &Winter's Tales lived on a coffee farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills outside of Nairobi, Kenya from 1914 to 1931 following her marriage to Baron Blixen. For some reason (hah) I started looking up coffee quotes this morning. The obvious one, of course the fannish: "The first cup of coffee recapitulates phylogeny"

and Talleyrand's "black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love" which is what I sometimes quote when asked how I take mine.

But I also discovered this one from Mark Helprin: "The voodoo priest and all his powders were as nothing compared to espresso, cappuccino, and mocha, which are stronger than all the religions of the world combined, and perhaps stronger than the human soul itself"

and that Napolean reportedly said: "Strong coffee, much strong coffee, is what awakens me. Coffee gives me warmth, waking, an unusual force and a pain that is not without very great pleasure.”
