Unfortunately there's no shortcuts here. It's one of the hardest things to do. Good diet and exercise are key. Note that whilst doing situps is good as it tones the stomach muscles, you need to do an all round fat-burning workout to actually reduce body fat levels. Regular exercise should also help with your sleep patterns.

Google's latest launch of their "Hangouts" chat service has thrown a few spanners in the works for those of us who have been long-time users of the original Google Hangouts.

A huge part of this is confusion over the branding.

Until last week, "Hangouts" meant, specifically, the multi-way video conferencing/collaboration capability. Text-based chat was handled by Google Talk, G+ Messenger, or the local hangout chat window (which was only visible to those in the hangout). The original Hangouts were, largely, self contained sessions independent of anything else.

From now, "Hangouts" means the (primarily) text-based chat client, and the video stuff has been "rebranded" as "Video Chat". The video chat is now integrated as a part of the new Hangout chat services. The key here is that it is "part of", and inseparable... more »

Why is it so hard to get corporate IT depts to adopt modern IT technology?

The background to this is that I'm currently consulting for a large company providing technical expertise for a specific project. This company, in common with many others, has a lot of legacy in their IT systems. Their working environment is Windows XP desktops running Citrix to access corporate applications. Their corporate applications are, primarily, MS Office (2003) and Lotus Notes and the a Quikr document publishing tool.

Basically this is a decade old setup that is an evolution of technology and IT practices from the late 1990s. It's complex and costly to support, slow, prone to failure, and discourages collaboration and productivity. The second release (2.5.1) of the UNSTABLE +GnuCash series is out for testing. Here is what's new:
- Robert Fewell has continued his work on the GtkTreeModel register. It is now the default for account registers. 
- Geert Janssens has begun work on replacing the GConf configuration management tool with the newer GSettings API from recent versions of GLib.
- Tom Lofts contributed the beginning of a RESTful Python API to enable access to minimal account, invoice, and customer information in a JSON format.
- Christian Stimming fixed the very long wait time for the UI to become responsive when running the import matcher.
- Also some bug fixes, package upgrades, and minor improvements.

So, the UK Law has changed and companies are now allowed to freely use "orphaned" photos as long as they conduct a reasonably diligent search to check for ownership.

A "reasonably diligent" search will include checking the EXIF metadata embedded in the photo, assuming it is there. So, two things to consider if you care about not having random companies commercially exploiting your photos without paying you for the pleasure:

1. Make sure you have embedded metadata in the photo

2. Make sure you never upload it to a social network which routinely strips out this metadata

This site allows you to check which common sites are doing this, so you can avoid using them.

Good assessment of Security Flaws in the new Android Facebook Homescreen / Overlay, thanks to Sophos. I certainly won't be touching it.

Aside not much missing Facebook if it didn't exist, I have no interest putting it on the forefront of my phone handset and considering I have uninstalled the persistently annoying Facebook App, I won't be going anywhere near this - and that was before reading this article highlighting it's security issues.

In Ardour, go into Edit->Preferences and open the 'User Interaction' tab.

In the "Control Surfaces' section, click the 'enable' and 'feedback' check boxes for the OSC section.

Now run the Ardroid app on your Android device, then go to menu->configure  and enter the IP address of the computer running Ardour, then go back to the main screen and click 'Menu->'Connect' and you now have a nice remote control device that will allow you to arm your tracks, play, record, rewind, mute trace, solo tracks, etc.

Security Issues

tl;dr - I have had some really blatant security breaches with OTHER people's online accounts lately and I thought I should try to get the word out there. I cannot get companies to understand my request. If I contact the people whose information I now have access to, they are skeptical and get upset. I don't know what to do except post the problem here and hope that someone takes notice.

What can you do? When you sign up for a new site and they do not require immediate email verification, request that they do so. Additionally if any email comes your way with personal information from a company that doesn't authenticate email addresses, write the company and tell them to stop it. Bottom line - before allowing you to enter any personally identifiable information on a website, the website should require email verification.

TIP: Google Keep works with Google Now

You can add notes to Google Keep using Google Now and the "note to self" voice command. You need the Keep application installed on your device, and it will prompt you as to which app to use (The default Gmail, or Keep). As long as you set the preference to "Always, then from then on "note to self" will insert new notes into Keep.

The inserted note includes an audio recording of the Google Now command.
