A-Graze-ing Month
I posted recently about Yumvelope and mentioned that I had also been trying out Graze... it has been a month since I received my first weekly box, so I would say it is about time for a proper review.
On April 2nd, +Christy Ramsey tweeted about the box of snacks she received from Graze.com, and my interest was piqued--after checking out their website, my main concern was that I would finish off the box in one day, which, I will admit doesn't say much because I generally graze all day, but the snacks sure did look tasty! Graze is new in the US, but apparently has been around in the UK (their website shows a celebration of their 4th birthday), and is open to the public there. They are not yet ready to handle public demand in the US, and each user only gets one invite code to send out; Christy had already given hers away, but +Jason Levine saw the co... more »

Yummm!(velope)
I don't like to get stuck in food ruts, so I try to add new products to the mix on a regular basis... but there are a lot of duds out there and the cost of snacks made with high quality ingredients can really add up. I've been looking into a lot of food subscription services that claim to pick out only the tastiest, best products for you, from organic produce delivery to measured out ingredients for meals, various trail mix type snacks to sample sizes of a bunch of different foods, and then finally, the category I decided to go with for my first order: full-sized, all-natural, minimally-processed snack items.
If you've been considering expanding your horizons with some new snack foods, check out what I thought of yumvelope.com in my review linked below!
Have you tried any of the many food subscription services out there? What do you ... more »

It's Record Store Day!
"This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April."

Here are some shots from our kielbasa +Blue Apron meal we made tonight (with potatoes and a cabbage/onion/apple/honey/vinegar thing), and the chicken leg dish we made a few days ago - with the best yogurt/dill sauce!

Your computer must be this behind to take this run
I received a +Sony fitness-focused, water-resistant MP3 Walkman today from a +Klout perk (yeah, there are some decent perks sometimes), and it seems to have some pretty nice features... but one thing I find odd is the spec requirements list. If they really want to compete in this space, perhaps they should think about removing some of these restrictions-- according to the website, it only works with OEM Windows XP, Vista, and 7, and it will NOT work with/does not support:
• Browsers other than Internet Explorer
• Windows 8
• Mac
• Linux
• An environment that is an upgrade of the original manufacturer-installed operating system (so, if your computer came with XP and you upgraded to 7)
• Multi-monitor environment
• Multi-boot environment
• 64-bit OS versions

Save the 'Almost Churn'
It's common to measure your churn, but how about the at-risk before it's too late? Just because a customer is sticking around, it doesn't mean that they're happy, and just because they're unhappy, doesn't mean they will tell you before already making up their mind to drop you. A little attention to make your customers feel like their satisfaction matters goes a long way.
Any tips and tricks to add from your experience?

Sometimes a movie really is life-changing
We've all heard many times about a movie, tv show, song, book, or meal, that will supposedly change your life, but more often than not, it makes you say "wow", might inspire you to make some changes to your life, but eventually just gets tucked away with the other things you've learned and remembered fondly. Sometimes, you do get inspired to make major life changes that stick, and that's not only voluntary, but requires a ton of effort. What if a movie gave you no choice but to have your world changed forever?
One of my friends, knowing about my visual differences, sent me the linked article recently and it was quite alarming and intriguing--I can't tell whether I am scared or jealous.
I don't see the same world that most of you do. I found out about it as a child, when the school nurse asked if... more »

Boys can do it all, too.
This article touches on a point that I am passionate about, which is summed up well in the below quoted excerpt. If we want true equality, the freedom to break free of traditional gender roles, it needs to be on both sides. There are movements to try to get more women into traditionally male roles, but where are the movements to get more men into traditionally female roles? Not to say there should be one, I think everyone should just be encouraged to pursue their interests, but why one and not the other? The one-sidedness seems to say that everything associated with female roles is lesser and undesirable, and no male should strive to want these things, but IMO, things, colors, and careers may be more popular within one gender, but do not necessarily need to belong to just one, and as long as you are doing what you are interested in, who is to say that it is less r... more »

I'm not a big fan of Valentine's day, but if the cards were like these classics from the 40s and before, I might be more likely to participate--they are hilariously funny, but in a horrible way. Football for gaming geeks.
Are you a gamer who really couldn't care less about football? This article aims to explain it in ways that may turn you into a bigger fan than the jocks, and you might even want to start up a game yourself.
"Football is, beneath its blaring American pop-culture facade, a turn-based / real-time action collectible trading card game of fine, minute mathematical depth, with just the right pinch of procedural randomness, and character / plot development unparalleled in any other role-playing game released yet in the history of games. You might not believe at first that Football is a deeper, harder, more interesting game than Advance Wars, though once you give it a chance and look past the boring graphical presentation, its math will blow your mind and you will be a convert for life."

Will a buyout give Dell more control, or less?
For the past few years, Dell has been shifting their concentration further towards their Enterprise portfolio, and it sounds like they have big plans to move quickly and boldly, without worrying about shareholders responses and revealing decisions that are better off left behind closed doors, hoping that customer are happy with the end result and show their approval through sales rather than shares.
The appeal of going Private is to have the freedom and flexibility to execute on your plan, but will they still have that power with Microsoft as an investor?
There are so many questions, from exclusive offerings, to whether this will impact Dell's product focus, and how the other hardware manufacturers will respond, but it will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

Thanks to +22 Days Nutrition for making my day!
I had contacted them with a photo of a spoiled bar that had an expiration date a few months out (this happens sometimes when you don't use any preservatives and the store isn't perfectly temperature controlled, though it is fairly rare), and instead of just sending me a coupon for a replacement bar, I received a variety gift pack--including flavors that I likely wouldn't have gone out of my way to seek out, as well as the new PB + Chocolate Chip Nirvana that is exclusive to Whole Foods until April (that's the shiny gold one) and I hadn't known about yet. Yummm! They went above and beyond, and ended up turning me into an even bigger fan by getting more flavors in front of me.

Is LinkedIn killing the value of endorsements?
When +LinkedIn introduced endorsements a few months ago, I had mixed feelings-- excited because it allowed people you have worked with before to recommend your work without writing a lengthy review, and with this ability to get little boosts in a topic, potential employers or business partners could get a sense of your strengths in the eyes of others, yet I was also skeptical, given the practices I have seen on Klout, where users artificially inflate someone's expertise without any really knowledge of it, even users begging for +K in a topic from their social media followers who would have no way of knowing how skilled they are in that area.
For recruiters who spend all day looking for viable candidates, LinkedIn can be a great way to find people, and strong recommendations of their work can determine who gets a call and who do... more »

Plus One Collection - UPDATE #5 - Who is in print book + FUNDRAISING
You voted very soundly for including more artists in the book, and we're going to do just that. Here's your list of who's work is going to be included in the print version of the book - http://plusonecollection.com/2012-artists/

As you asked, we're making cheaper version of the book available at $99 or $125 if you live outside US. You can also contribute directly, aka "open contribution." Control whether community posts appear on your profile
Thanks for all the great feedback on how we can make Google+ Communities even better. It’s been inspiring to see all of the different ways people are using communities, and we’re excited to keep making improvements.
Community posts are a great way for people to see your different interests when they visit your Google+ profile. But some of you have asked for a way to keep community posts separate from the rest of your Google+ posts.
Today we're adding a new setting that lets you do just that! Simply visit https://www.google.com/settings/plus, look for the new "Communities" section, and make your choice. (We'll be rolling this out gradually.)
Remember that your private community posts will only be visible to people in those communities, regardless of whether or not you show commu... more »

Submitted!
It was difficult narrowing it down to one photo without a set theme, but here it is, my submission for this year's #PlusOneCollection2012 To me, this image represents the long path we are all on, with twists and turns, venturing into the unknown, seeing where the challenges lead us.
If you aren't familiar, this is the second year that a group of Google+ photographers are publishing a book of images to raise money for a great charity-- this time the proceeds will benefit the Kilgoris Project. Learn more about the project here: http://plusonecollection.com
Last year they raised over $10,000, which is quite impressive; the fundraising efforts came from photographers that care about making a difference, lead by 15 unpaid volunteers that worked on the project. Here's hoping that this year is even more successful, and I would be honored if I wa... more »

Facebook Graph Search: helping you find the connections you've been missing
Sounds like Facebook Graph Search is going to be a lot of fun to play around with! If it performs the way I am imagining, it will really come in handy for when you want to find your target audience for a post, an event, or find information out about things to do in an area from a target demographic... not just for businesses, but for your personal life as well.
Since we all know that with EdgeRank you don't get to see every post from every friend, and it is hard to find people you don't know, this helps you find what you are missing and get back on the radar with those people-- whether you create a list to follow, select to show all posts from them, or organically show up more from interaction, you are able to find the people that you are looking to connect with. If you're going to make resolutions, some tips to stay on track
I linked below to my post from a year ago, explaining that rather than making New Year's resolutions, I consider it just one of many points throughout the year where I do more than a casual reflection, and make sure that my approach is addressing the root cause. However, I get that many of you will be pledging to make big changes this year, and I would like to offer some guidance on how to make them successful.
If you read my previous post, you know that my #1 tip is to make sure you understand the reason why you have been unsuccessful in past efforts, or how you got to the point that you are unhappy with. This is huge, otherwise, you will just be spinning your wheels and are less likely to succeed. The next step is to come up with a realistic action-based plan rather than just an end... more »

+moolta allows you to raise money for charity by pledging to do crazy things, the social web equivalent of daring someone to do something in the schoolyard for a dollar, but for a good cause. If you have a pretty intense goal, perhaps it is worth holding yourself accountable, and helping out those in need in the process. One guy is going to climb the Empire State Building, while this guy... well, this guy walked down 4 floors of stairs on his hands!

Giving the Louvre A New Sky
One of my personal goals is to become better at Photoshop, as a photographer it can be an invaluable tool to help express your vision - and I thought it would be fun to share one of the tricks that I've picked up with you.
The numbered paragraphs below refer to the image in the album & the step in the process.
(1) In the first image in the album you see the end result of the process, a pretty decent shot of the Louvre, but that's not at all how it began
(2) This was the original source file, as you can see the sky and color was just an absolute nightmare that day - everything was zombie skintoned, boring, bland, grey - just completely unusable! However when you're in Paris for a day or two you take the photo in the hope that there's a way to salvage it right? So that's how we begin, we want... more »

In an effort to reach one million customers, which they feel will allow them to make a significant difference in health care, +23andMe has lowered the cost of a kit to $99. More data will allow them to provide a better service to their customers, and this drop in price will allow many more people who couldn't afford or justify the former cost have access to information that will make an impact on their health care decisions, or learn about their ancestry. Sounds like a win-win.

You can't fix a quick-fix culture with a quick fix
We live in a society where people look to put band-aids on problems instead of getting to the root cause and dealing with them. I've been trying to avoid weighing in on the school shooting, but I see a lot of people that feel completely helpless and are looking for solutions. While there isn't much we can do to completely control the actions of others, there are several things we can ALL actively do to indirectly lower the rate of incidents like this:
•remove the stigma from mental illness so people aren't too ashamed to talk about it and admit they need help
•make high quality mental health care more easily accessible/covered better by insurance
•teach coping skills (as I have brought up in many former posts)
•understand the effects of medications (some for mental illness can cause a change in affect,... more »

Are our banks just plain too big?
They say that the economic fallout would be too great if HSBC was held responsible for "accusations that it laundered money for Mexican drug cartels and conducted prohibited transactions on behalf of countries like Iran and Sudan", which was also the argument for bailing out the banks engaging in shady practices during the mortgage crisis in recent years.
At what point is enough going to be enough, that companies need to be held responsible for their actions, no matter how large?
The argument that it would take time and resources to investigate and prosecute the individuals makes an even bigger mockery of the system-- it's too much trouble, so just carry on and do whatever you'd like to?

I remember last summer a lot of us thinking that (a better version of) Google Groups was needed here. Many of us that have been here from the start, or have been really involved with some of the topics that have really taken off (like photography), already feel like we are really part of a community... but we've still been waiting for a place for Communities, with the ability to meet people with our niche interests, as well as find and post on a topic within a group, a true "shared" circle. When we introduce our friends to Google+, we try to teach them how to find people they can connect with, but it has been an intimidating process, and they haven't been able to get the sense of community that we have. And even for those of us that already have this warm connected feeling, it would be great to have official places for them.

Nik Software's SNAPSEED released for Android
I am stoked to announce that +Snapseed , one of the most popular mobile photography editing programs, is now officially been announced (available later today on the Google play store). I have been using and testing the final version of this application for a few weeks on my Nexus 4 and I have to tell you I am impressed. You can look back on the last few Androidography images I have shared over the last week...all were made with Snapseed.
Many people don't realize that photo editing is a large part of why iPhone photos generally look much better then Android mobile images. Now the playing field is even...and my Nexus 4 is enjoying the Snapseed love.
Full review and tips & tricks coming soon on my blog:

Newton vs Goldberg
A seemingly simple Rube Goldberg Machine, with a twist. Very cool.
The video is only a minute long, and for those interested in the science behind the seemingly gravity-defying elements (which I presume are mostly magnets), 2D House will be posting videos on how it was done "soon."

Meet and Seat
The Dutch airline +KLM is kicking off a "Meet & Seat" initiative that will allow passengers to select who they will sit next to by using Facebook to see who else has opted-in to the service. This could be great for conferences, mutual interests/professions, etc to increase the chances that you will have something to talk about, or similarly want to be quiet and get work done, or could be a bit creepy if people are selecting you solely on looks.
