Regardless of which side of the Independence debate your on this is a MUST READ

It answers one key question:
If we are subsidy junkies why is Westminster fighting so hard to keep hold of a country inside the union that, according to them, are a drain on the UK exchequer?

Tufted Duck Ducklings
Aythya fuligula
I was taken by these cute ducklings scrambling over stones almost as big as they are and how the lead duckling appears to be in conversation with it's sibling.
The adult male is all black except for white flanks and a blue-grey bill. It has an obvious head tuft that gives the species its name. The adult female is brown with paler flanks, and is more easily confused with other diving ducks. In particular, some have white around the bill base which resembles the Scaup species, although the white is never as extensive as in those ducks.

The after effects of Storm Frank at Duthie Park, Aberdeen on 31st December for this part of Aberdeen to flood the river would need to be in-excess of 20 feet above the normal river level. The 31st and 1st were the only days reprieve from the rain, then it started again! It has been raining ever since and there is more to come, so stay safe and do your best to remain dry. Take Care everyone.

Happy New Year to all my loyal followers
I missed the bells to capture this shot just for you. Here is the light show we got in Scotland to bring in the New Year, not the one in Edinburgh or any other town or city in Scotland this one was provided by Mother Nature.  Thanks to light pollution the sad fact is that nobody in the towns and cities would have seen it, we should switch off the street lights and reconnect with the real world.

Hi everyone,
What a dreadful week that was and who knows what the future holds or how long the future maybe.

Our worst fears have been confirmed, my wife's breast cancer has spread to her bones, that explains her ever reducing mobility. While Sylvia and I had our suspicions that this maybe the case it was still a difficult thing to hear, possibly made worse by going in to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for what we thought was a routine appointment with the oncologist, but it turned into a stay in hospital.

Since then more tests, new drugs, new treatment, new doctor, more scans, more Radiotherapy and an operation planed for next Friday. Trying to explain all of this to the kids, thank god they are all teenagers I don't know how I'd have coped telling Primary school aged children.

Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)
In the wee small hours I saw some images in one of the groups on Fbk. They said they had taken them in the last 20 mins and were going back out to shoot some more. There was only one thing for it I had to get out and try to shoot it for myself, however I had a problem, my tripod is broken. Not to be deterred I went out anyway with a solution in mind all I needed was a good site for both the Aurora and my idea to work. There are several sites in North East Scotland where I would like to shoot the Aurora, but none of them are close enough to try my plan out, so what to do? One key criteria is to get the elevation or go to the coast to get a nice big sky, well from my house there is no shortage of hills. Having found my location I set up with my camera on a strainer post (Gate post) and shutter release cable attached.

I was treated to a good display of both Aurora and the Taurid Meteor Shower sadly I didn't manage to capture the latter, but still I was able to witness some very bright fireballs so bright they cast a shadows. Hopefully I will have a chance to capture the Aurora and a meteor shower again soon.___

The Mists of Time
After taking my son to work the other day I took some shots on the way home. There was a thick mist on the hill tops and some parks still have straw bales in them. When I saw the rooks in the dead tree and the mist just thinning enough to expose a ruined farm steading there was something timeless about the scene I was compelled to capture.  While the colour shots are okay I much prefer the Black & White version, maybe that was partially because of the timeless quality I felt taking the image.

Important - Feedback wanted
What to do with those images that don't come up to standard? These two shots were taken last week and both were out of focus (due to motion blur), so I decided to try something new (for me) to see if I could get something I could be happy with and hopefully people might want to buy.
Both images were taken through the same process
in Lightroom
- Increased contrast, Increased the vibrancy & saturation, cropped & resized.
In Photoshop
Image 1
- Add Surface Blur
- Add a Texture

Image 2
- Add additional vertical Motion Blur
Do you like either image?
Would you hang either of them on your wall?
Please leave any other feedback on these images.

Street Furniture
This is a first for me, I was out in a local town around late afternoon when I noticed the "Street Furniture" (posh way of saying lamp posts and other objects or pieces of equipment installed on streets for various purposes.) The sun was coming down behind one of the lamp posts and I was drawn to the hanging basket brackets with horses as ornamentation; coupled with the attractive sun-rays radiating from the lamp post.
This was when I started to beat myself up for not having my DSLR with me, then I remembered the advice I had received from some top photographers; "The best camera is the one you have with you." When that came to mind I remembered that my phone had a camera on it (a new thing for me), so I took some shots. Calrton Hill
Calton Hill is usually a location from which to photograph Edinburgh, but with it's famous collection of historic monuments, makes a great subject itself especially when back lit by the morning sun. One of the most striking is the National Monument, inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. Intended to commemorate the Scottish servicemen who died in the Napoleonic Wars, sadly never completed leaving just the twelve columns we see today.
The Nelson Monument shaped like an up-turned telescope, completed in 1816 the monument commemorates the death of Admiral Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. In 1852 a time ball was added to the top to enable ships moored in the Firth of Forth to set their time-pieces accurately the Time Ball still drops at one o'clock six days a week. Inchgarvie - Island or Battleship?
I took this shot with the sole purpose of writing this piece, which is why I have partially blacked the island.
Inchgarvie is one of the small, uninhabited islands in the Firth of Forth. The name comes from the Gaelic Innis Garbhach which means "rough island"; part of the island has four caissons that make up part of the foundations for the Forth Bridge.
Inchgarvie’s fortifications pre-date the modern period, but they were created with the same objective in mind. In the days when boats were the only way to cross the Firth of Forth, the island was on the main route between North Queensferry in Fife and South Queensferry in Lothian. The island has been used as a defensive installation since the early part of the 16th century, right up till the middle of the 20th century..
The island became of renewed importance to the security of the Firth of Forth during the First and Second World Wars, during which, in combination with the fortifications on Inchcolm (another Island in the Firth), and gun emplacements on the mainland to the north (at North Queensferry) and to the south (at Dalmeny), it became a primary defense against air and submarine attacks on the Forth Bridge and the Rosyth Dockyard. The gun emplacements were permanently manned throughout war.

HDR - St.Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh

St Giles’ architecture is built in the Gothic style, basically fourteenth century with many alterations. The most notable external feature of the cathedral is the Crown Spire erected in 1495 a feature which was copied across Scotland. Although there is record of a parish church in Edinburgh by the year 854 that would have been a very modest building. At the time of the reformation, John Knox led the Lords of the Congregation into Edinburgh c.1559 and was elected minister of Edinburgh. Knox played a principal role in establishing the styles of worship and administration that were to be accepted throughout the country. Knox served as Minister at St Giles’ until 1572. Although it is commonly assumed that St Giles’ and most other Scottish churches were “cleansed” by riots, there is little evidence to support this. Burgh records show that it took over a year to convert St Giles’ for Reformed worship. The building was not looted, and few if any windows were destroyed immediately. The Reformers partitioned the interior of St Giles’, dividing the congregation of Edinburgh and allowing the building to be used for a wide range of purposes. During the next 300 years the building housed a police station, a fire station, a school and a coal store. The Scottish guillotine, the “Maiden”, was housed in the church, and in one corner was a prison used for “harlots and whores”. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland met in the building, as did the Parliament and the Town Council

Wilhelm Westhofen recorded in 1890 that 57 lives were lost during construction; but in 2005 the Forth Bridge Memorial Committee and a team of local historians set out to name all those who died. As of 2009, 73 deaths have been connected with the construction of the bridge and its immediate aftermath. Of the 73 recorded deaths, 38 were as a result of falling, 9 of being crushed, 9 drowned, 8 struck by a falling object, 3 died in a fire in a bothy, 1 of caisson disease, and the cause of five deaths is unknown.

There are plans for a visitors centre to the bridge, which would include a viewing platform on top of the North Queensferry side or a  bridge climbing experience to the South Queensferry side, which should be worth a visit.

West Wemyss Tolbooth is of the 18th century, today a badly eroded panel with the family coat of arms states that the Tolbooth was erected
"for the cribbing of vice and service to crown by David, 4th Earl of Wemyss [1628-1720]."

For this purpose it had "prison" cells at ground floor with entrances in the pend which have since been sealed. The tower was converted from a pigeon loft to clock tower in 1901, on top of the tower is a gold weathervane depicting a swan, the Wemyss family symbol.

Locals once referred to the 16th century port and village of West Wemyss as the "Haven Town of Wemyss" and were proud of its status as a burgh of barony, granted by King James IV in 1511. Initially its economy was based on salt-making though it had a harbour by 1621. In the 19th century, the town became dominated by the coal industry.

Stirling Castle
The magnificent imposing historic citadel stands high above the Central Belt of Scotland a strong defensive position. Its strategic location, guarding the furthest downstream crossing of the River Forth, until the Forth Bridge was completed in the 1890s, made it an important fortification from the earliest times. This stronghold was considered so important that it was seen as the Key to Scotland, whoever held Stirling controlled Scotland. As a result the Castle was besieged many times one such siege led to the Battle of Bannockburn when Edward Bruce, Earl of Carrick, King Robert's younger brother, agreed with the English Commander Sir Philip Mowbray that the English had to relieve him with a year or he'd surrender the castle. The castle towers over some of the most important battlefields of Scotland’s past including Stirling Bridge, the site of William Wallace’s victory over the English in 1297, and Bannockburn where Robert the Bruce defeated the English in the summer of 1314.

Loch Lomond
Taken during a recent trip to the open days of the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh with my eldest daughter.  We stayed overnight before and after the open days, which gave me some spare time for a spot of photography. This was my first visit to the Bonny Banks and I can't wait to go back the photo opportunities there are truly endless.

Some Basic Information About Loch Lomond
The beauty of this area is well known having been immortalised in song and as part of Scotland's oldest National Park, the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Loch Lomond is the largest, by area, freshwater loch in Britain, being 24 miles long, between 5 miles and 3/4 of a mile wide to a depth of up to 620 feet (190m). Historically the Loch formed part of the boundary between Stirling Shire and Dunbarton Shire. Currently the loch is split between the council areas of Stirling, Argyll and Bute, and West Dunbarton Shire. Its southern shores are about 14 miles north of Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city making it a very popular location for people who want to enjoy the loch both on and off the water. The National Park Authority have tried to achieve a balance between land-based tourists and loch users.

Corgarff Castle & The Solar Eclipse
Under the partial solar eclipse on 20th March 2015, this scene made me wonder how many people have witnessed this scene throughout history. It was a wild and woolly morning which just served to highlight the bleak, stark, uncompromising and austere setting of this formidable small castle.

Corgarff’s story is really two stories. The first takes us from the middle of the 16th century, when the tower was built, through to the close of the 17th century, when it was abandoned. This was the castle’s heyday, when it served as the impressive fortified home of the Forbeses of Corgarff.

The second story takes us from the mid-18th century, when the tower was turned into soldiers’ barracks, through to 1831, when the army abandoned it. For those 95 years, the redcoats in the old tower patrolled Strathdon, hunting down Jacobite sympathisers. Latterly they helped the excisemen stamp out the illegal production and smuggling of whisky.  The arrival of the redcoats after the Battle of Culloden in 1746 resulted in the tower house being gutted internally and transformed into soldiers’ barracks. The high stone-vaulted ceiling of the old hall was removed and an extra timber floor inserted, thereby providing accommodation for the commanding officer, three non-commissioned officers and up to 42 men. Outside, the courtyard buildings and surrounding wall were demolished. They were replaced with two single-storey pavilions and the star-shaped wall, equipped with musket-loops, that gives Corgarff its unrivalled appearance.___

Don't be surprised to see a coalition between Labour and the Tories to lessen the power of the SNP ironically that could make them the Official Opposition. The paranoia is that high in England that this is a serious possibility in the event of a hung parliament especially if the Libdem vote collapses in the way that has been predicted. Interesting times #voteSNP #GE15

From the Guardian's Website:
RT’s international stations have always strived to simply deliver news that people are struggling to get elsewhere. And despite these “funny” / fear-mongering UK press pieces, it seems that this is exactly what many are expecting of RT’s new UK channel.

People commenting on the Guardian website agreed:

- Russia Today provide balance to the UK media. Counters a narrative and provides a platform for alternative voice. For that I'm grateful they exist in the UK.

- RT is more reliable now than our dear old graun. Great news that we will have another source to compare with what currently passes for journalism in the UK. How UK's oligarch press barons and the elitist London establishment must hate that!

End of a stressful week and the weeks to come are just going to get worse, my wife (Sylvia) was diagnosed with Breast Cancer earlier in the week. Even typing this is hard, but she is the one that needs support, as do the kids, difficult times lie ahead for all of us. Next hospital visit 30th of this month, when hopefully we will get to know more, but I fear that it could take a further visit for us to be much wiser regarding treatment, etc. Meanwhile we are just going through the motions.

Scottish Independence Referendum

Make your own educated, informed decision

That is the key, read the question, understand what it's asking:

Should Scotland be an Independent Country?

That is it nice and simple, so why is it important to read it and understand what is being asked? Because the media have  twisted the debate onto subjects that have nothing whatsoever to do with the question being asked and we let them. You are not being asked to endorse any Policies  (taxation, costed plans, etc) , Politicians (Alex Salmond, Alastair Darling, etc) or Political Parties (SNP, Labour, etc)  those decisions will be made by us in the 2016 election, when all political parties (maybe including some that don't exist yet) set out their costed vision for Scotland.

We are being asked if we believe anyone can make better decisions for Scotland than the people who live here.

Lets think about that for a second; would you give your next door neighbour your pay cheque every month and ask them to pay your bills and give you some pocket money, they can keep what is left over to pay for the new conservatory they are building, pay the interest on their debts (which they are still running up)?   This neighbour earns significantly less than you do, but the had a private education, there are more people living next door and the house is bigger than yours.  You only get to say how you spend your pocket money and your neighbour tells you how much they will give you.  Is this sounding like a good deal?
No!
Why not that is what Scotland is doing right now!!!

The evidence is clear that we have a bad deal as part of the UK:

The UK government have imposed policies on Scotland that Scottish MPs voted overwhelmingly against,

Of the 1500 politicians at Westminster (both houses) Scotland elect 59 that is a mere 3.9%  - No Democracy there,

have run up £1.5 Trillion debt and it's growing by the minute,

have created one of the most unequal societies in the developed world, Five families have more wealth than over 20% of the population

have plunged 820,00 people into poverty,

poverty in Scotland has more than doubled in 30 years,

19% of children (180,000) are living in poverty,

for the first time ever, more working age adults living in poverty are in working households than out-of-work households,
this list of injustices goes on and on.

Here is what world renowned organisations have said about the situation in Scotland:

Oxfam have said " unacceptable levels of poverty that exists in one of the richest countries (Scotland) in the world ."
They also said
" The increase in the number of people living in poverty in Scotland is deeply concerning with the rise amongst children particularly worrying ."

The Poverty  Alliance have said
" Scottish food banks opened their doors and provided food to 71,428 men, women and children a 400% increase and five times the number of new food banks compared to the previous financial year."

Peter Kelly, Director of The Poverty Alliance said:
“We welcome the recent Scottish Government announcement of £1m to support food banks but it is important that we tackle the underlying causes of poverty."

He also said
“It is extremely concerning to see yet another dramatic rise in the number of people relying on food banks to feed themselves and their families.
Low wages and a punitive sanctions regime are forcing people into destitution
It is unacceptable that in 21st century Scotland that people are struggling to feed themselves.

A NO vote IS endorsing this as acceptable for 21st century Scotland

Well it is NOT acceptable not now, not ever.

Very interesting. The UK are subject of a UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities inquiry for systematic and grave violations against disabled people in the UK. They have a very high threshold before an inquiry can be started, an allegation must be established and the government has to have not taken any action to rectify the situation. Watch this video from 1:05:00
Thank you for sharing this, there are thousands, if not millions, of disabled people in the UK who are awaiting the ruling of this committee.

Almost exactly what I was saying to one of my children earlier after something we'd been watching on TV.  We need timber, but we also need forests. Clear felling doesn't make sense, it destroys habitat, contributes to mass extinction, poverty and desertification.  If we harvested 1 tree in every 50 and planted two in there stead we would have a forest that had a range of ages of tree, we'd preserve the biodiversity and habitats, thereby preserving all those species we have not discovered yet among them could be the species that leads to a cure for a serious medical condition. It really is common sense, so why aren't we smart enough to actually follow the plan?  Surely it's not that difficult?

Iraq - Jaafari Personal Status Law

This is truly abhorrent, effectively this legalises rape, pedeophillia, imprisonment of girls & women by their husbands, slavery and sets women's rights back millenia.

Included in this law:

- No minimum age for marriage;
- A facility to divorce a 9 year old girl;
- Makes it illegal for a girl to resist her "Husband's" advances;
- Makes it illegal for a female to leave the house without her husbands permission;
- Enable a girl's father to accept a marriage proposal on her behalf.

Is this what our servicemen & women died for in Iraq ???

Act NOW.
