Jeff Sullivan2,006,924+Lori Hibbett and I and I will try to be shooting on the rocks by around 6:30 to capture golden hour light. Sunset is at 7:18, so the best sky color will be from then until 7:40 or so. Then we'll have some "blue hour" twilight for another 20-30 minutes, the light painting can start by 8, and stars will be gradually strengthening from then through 8:30 for night shots. If we're getting some good light and reflections off the beach making light orbs and so on, we can shoot to 9 or whenever we get thirsty. No problem if you're late given work, school and weekday traffic, we should be able to stay entertained shooting in the changing light for at least 2-2.5 hours.  We'll go to a bar or restaurant for another hour or two after that. This free social event is open to all; you're welcome to bring your photographer friends (on Flickr, Meetup, 500px, from your local photography club, etc.) We're looking forward to seeing those of you we've met out shooting in recent years, and meeting those of you we haven't shot with yet! We'd like to explore the area known as Hospitals Reef or Draper Villas, the rocks adjacent to Coast Boulevard Park 0.7 miles south of La Jolla Cove (see map).  We'll also shoot El Matador State Beach in Malibu April 11 and Little Corona Beach April 14.Sunset Photowalk La Jolla Monday April 152013-04-15 18:30:0030

Images from my Blog
Here's an album Google+ auto-created from posts to my blog at www.MyPhotoGuides.com.
https://plus.google.com/photos/107459220492917008623/albums/5110510049163163345

I thought it was a regular Picasa album, so I started to delete duplicates... then after the first few dozen, I actually read the warning that doing so would also delete the photos from my blog. Oops.

Feel free to share these if you like (thanks!). I shared the album early on when I first joined Google+ and had few circle contacts, so few people have seen them so far.

Bodie Open Until 10 pm Tonight, with Supermoon Rise
Bodie is offering one of its Ghost Stories tour nights tonight, which means that they let other park visitors stay late too.  It's also a "supermoon" full moon today, and in a setting like Bodie with an eastern horizon about 3.5 degrees in elevation it'll rise over the apparent horizon during or right after peak sky color, about 20 minutes after sunset.

It gets fully dark around 9:04 pm, so you can also have nearly an hour of full moon night photography before the park closes.  As you can imagine, the park can be super crowded on a night like this, so don't expect to have it, or any particular subject, to yourself, but for the novelty of the overall experience or for practice shooting interesting subjects (and people) under full moon lighting, it's nice that the park makes such opportunitiesav... more »

For a much longer, much less crowded experience, we have two more nights left in Bodie this year, October 11 and 12, when we'll enjoy dark, moonless skies and 5 hours of fully dark night shooting in Bodie: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/

Burning Man 2012
As I saw posts on social media from people going to Burning Man next week, I realized that I hadn't gotten through all of my photos from the last time I went, in 2012. Between the heat, the dust and the darkness, the conditions can be challenging for photography, but with hundreds of works of art and mutant vehicles, it's a hotbed of creativity and a riot of color.

In spite of a ban on commercial activity within the event, estimates on the economic impact on Northern Nevada alone ranged from $35 - 44M in 2012 (not including participants' preparations at home). Home Depot, Wal-Mart and many other retail establishments get cleaned out this week, selling building and camping supplies and groceries.

This is where the toxic spill happened in the past week; over 100 miles of river has been poisoned so far.

That toxic spill is what the "free market" looks like.  Mining companies are "free" to fail to set aside enough money to provide adequate cleanup, then go bankrupt, and the executives are free to do this knowingly and remain completely shielded from all liability. So mines that were never really economically viable with cleanup costs considered are free to develop anyway, and the rest of the country is free to have the burden of the costs dumped on them (not to mention having toxic waste dumped in their water supply).

That's why there was a million gallons of toxic waste water for the EPA to (try to manage and) accidentally release in the first place... the market was free and unregulated enough to leave it there.

Such a spill could happen at a mine in Redding, California, where the +U.S. Environmental Protection Agency operates a treatment plant that holds back millions of gallons of Iron Mountain Mine waste that could poison the Sacramento River, then San Francisco Bay.  It almost happened already (1997?).

And to think that some Presidential candidates want to eliminate the EPA, and simply let these toxic floods happen at random and with more frequency.

How will the free, unregulated market work for you when your water supply is poisoned?

Summer Milky Way
For the most part, the Milky Way is likely to be too high overhead to capture more of these types of Milky Way panorama shots this year, but I'm looking forward to next year!

On the other hand, during our Bodie workshops on August 15, October 11, and 12, although the Milky Way will intersect with the horizon in a fairly vertical fashion, on August 15 the bright galactic center doesn't set until after we leave the park at 1 am.

On October 11 and 12, we should have a good couple of hours of shooting the Milky Way before the galactic center sets.  With the earlier fall sunsets before 6:30, we'll have a lot of additional hours for light painting and star trails as well.

Perseid Meteor Shower 2010-2012
The annual Perseid meteor shower is considered to be active from July 13th to August 26th, peaking around the night of August 12-13.  The weather and moon phase don't always cooperate to offer great viewing conditions, so it can take time to accumulate enough photos to put together a long time-lapse video.

In 2014 I assembled time-lapse clips from the previous recent years to set to this song "While the Sun Was Sleeping" by Life Audience.

Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Coming Aug 11-14
As I mentioned with my time-lapse video share yesterday, the earth passes through the comet debris that causes the Perseid meteor shower for a few weeks, but the activity peaks around the night of August 12-13.  The meteor activity is high for a while on either side of the peak so it can be productive to look in the August 11-14 timeframe.

Perseid Meteor Shower Composite, 2013
I'm still working on my images from the Camelopardalid meteor shower last night.  So in the meantime to kill some time while last night's images process, I produced this composite image showing 40 meteors from 4 hours of the Perseid meteor shower early in the morning of August 12, 2013.

These meteors appear in my time-lapse video of the 2013 Perseid Meteor shower on YouTube: Perseid Meteor Shower 2013

https://plus.google.com/photos/107459220492917008623/albums/5110510049163163345

I thought it was a regular Picasa album, so I started to delete duplicates... then after the first few dozen, I actually read the warning that doing so would also delete the photos from my blog. Oops.

Feel free to share these if you like (thanks!). I shared the album early on when I first joined Google+ and had few circle contacts, so few people have seen them so far.___Blast from the G+ Past

Having invested a chunk of my life to the community, to the platform, I hope that +Yonatan Zunger and the Google engineering teams can resurrect G+, but I don't think that the core strategic problems or resolutions lie with +YouTube or other Google product integration, as the recent post by +Bradley Horowitz seemed to say.

Removing integration would be a required step towards dropping G+ or hiding the functionality inside of something else, so perhaps Scoble's thoughts offer some valuable insight.

I'm still rooting for Google+, but actions speak louder than words, and I'm not seeing much action, much life left in it.

Revisiting the Original G+
It's nice to see the engagement and dialog that was present and possible early on on G+, like this post from August 30, 2011.  What might have become of G+ if content, engagement and friendships had been allowed to grow organically?

This was one of three albums of photos I assembled from a month of travels around Turkey the year before, in Istanbul, along the coast, and to ancient sites away from the coast.  The trip was a wonderful experience, fueling my desire to travel more as time and finances permit.

Istanbul, Turkey
I've been to Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand, so I wanted to try something a little more adventurous this time. I heard a fair amount of warnings before the trip (given all the propaganda Americans have been fed over the past 10 years, plus State Department warnings), but the people were very welcoming and generous, especially when the car broke down in a stone village which had more tractors than cars, with no one around who spoke English.

For some reason you won't get comment boxes on individual photos if you click on the photos below; you have to go straight to the album this way: https://plus.google.com/photos/107459220492917008623/albums/5646672037554147281

I'm still getting used to the new Collections functionality.  Some of my shares to Collects get a lot of visibility and engagement, now most seem not to.  The same is true for my G+ posts through too, so I'll try and save a few more posts to Collections and see if that results in anything positive.

Winter in Wine Country
Winter is a great time for photographers to visit wine country.  The symmetry of the rows in the vineyards can add patterns or leading lines to your compositions.  If you're into wine it's also a great time to chat with winemakers, as their Fall harvest is tucked safely away into barrels and the vines are dormant.  As Spring arrives, wild mustard often colors the space between the vines.

In California we're particularly lucky to have a wide selection of wine regions, producing an incredible variety of world class wines.  Most wineries offer hours when they're open for tasting, and with many of the wine regions lying not far from the Bay Area or Los Angeles, finding wines you like can be a fun weekend pursuit.

Yosemite With Pride
We were in Yosemite to celebrate my mothers's birthday last week. I don't think that she had eaten at the +The Ahwahnee Hotel before, so we treated her to a meal there as a special treat during the family reunion week.  Since it was a special occasion, I brought my last bottle of '98 +Pride Mountain Vineyards merlot, and we enjoyed it prior to heading over for dinner.  Then it turned out that The Ahwahnee had the 2012 Pride merlot, so we tried that with dinner!  Although separated by 14 years of age, both wines displayed Pride's excellent site and microclimate, their ability to grow great grapes and not screw them up in the winemaking process.  I miss the place; I need to get back up there soon.

I looked up some old tasting notes on the '98 merlot, and pasted them into the blog post linkedbelow:... more »

Photos from the Washington Fire Near Markleeville, California
The fire is roughly halfway to our house, but hopefully the more moderate winds today will enable the firefighters to slow its spread.  Full containment is estimated for June 30, but a lot can change between now and then.

Here's my new blog post with more http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2015/06/23/photos-from-the-washington-fire-near-markleeville-california/

The +Pacific Crest Trail Association published a useful map showing the fire's progress around Monitor Pass.

I'll put more photos on DripThat, a new app and community which facilitates the telling of stories through pictures, video and text.  You can find the DripThat app in the Apple App Store (http://bit.ly/1dhaequ), and you can connect with me in the community to see more of my photos from my road trips:ht... more »

Washington Fire Sunday Evening
The smoke continued to thicken over our home as the Washington Fire spread to over 6500 acres in high winds yesterday, so +Lori Hibbett and I headed north of the fire to see if we could see how close it was getting.

Catch the 10% Crescent Moon Setting Tonight
Astronomers are looking forward to the end of this month when Venus will appear in the sky very close to Jupiter.  But the two bright planets will be dancing with the crescent moon for the next three nights.  Tonight in mid northern latitudes the crescent moon of about 9% full will be best caught to the west during twilight around 9 pm, right before it descends into the thicker air and haze by the horizon.

For the following two nights, the moon will be brighter and set increasingly later, forming a triangle with Jupiter and Venus.

I photographed a similar event earlier this year, when the moon set with Venus and Mars nearby.  I posted a time-lapse video and photographs of that event to my blog:
http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/03/venus-mars-moon-conjunction.html
