Peter Lake10,048Last look at the approach of Comet Siding Spring to Mars from Australia. The closest approach will not be visible from Australia ...... but just 6-7 hours before that we'll look at the latest images from the iTelescope.net Observatory (Q62) at Siding Spring nearby where Robert McNaught (E12) discovered this most interesting comet in January 2013 ( the origin of the  2013 A1 name). The comet is very faint at about Magnitude 13 and Mars is very bright. We normally don't use these telescopes to directly image the planets as they are science instruments and the planets are way too bright, it will be tricky to keep Mars mostly out of shot or just on the edge of the frame.Live coverage of Comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) approaching Mars2014-10-19 12:00:00193

Pamela L. Gay87,533*Our promise* is to be here as your guide to learning and doing astronomy. *Our goal* is to provide anyone with an interest in space the opportunity to partner with scientists using NASA data to explore our Solar System. From the Moon to Mercury, you are invited help us do science. In exchange, we will offer you a virtual version of all the opportunities professional researchers have in their research labs. From seminars to star parties, and from planetarium shows to classes, CosmoQuest will help you learn. Recent funding cuts have made it impossible for scientists to explore all the data we have on our own, but with your help, we can explore our Solar System. Through this fundraiser we will raise money to support our software, education, and media programs. *Initial Funding Goal:* $295,200 to fund citizen science software and projects. *Donate http://bit.ly/1gVAtOy*CosmoQuest 2014 Hangoutathon: Part 12014-04-26 17:00:0023

Pamela L. Gay87,533Join Marty Quinn as he introduces CRaTER Live, a new, free Internet Radio Station where users around the world can listen to cosmic rays hitting the Moon, both from deep space, and as result of coronal mass ejections from the Sun. CRaTER Live presents data counts per second from the six cosmic ray detectors that form the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation instrument on board NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter or LRO mission. LRO orbits the moon every two hours, and sends data related to the six detectors every second back to Earth through NASA's space communications network. That means that CRaTER receives live data for 60 minutes, then replays that data for the next 60 minutes while CRaTER goes behind the moon and loses communication in the process. The data is encoded so that small solar events, as well as large solar storm events alter the music pitches that play the detector counts in dramatic ways, changing instruments and scales as cosmic ray counts increase. In the twenty minute introduction to CRaTER Live, Quinn will introduce the sonification design so listeners will be able to decode the sounds for themselves, and discuss various options to listen on the web, or on your mobile device 24 hours a day. Quinn will be joined by members of the CRaTER team, as well as visually impaired students from St Lucy Day School for the Blind in Philadelphia.CRaTER Live2014-04-22 19:00:009
Pamela L. Gay87,533During this live performance radio signals will be used to send images to the Moon from radio antennas in one of three locations around the world, Brazil, the UK or Switzerland. These signals will bounce off the Moon and return to Earth where they will be picked up by the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope. These moonbounced images will be presented in real time as they return from the Moon and at the end of the performance they will be printed and mailed back as postcards to the people who submitted them.GAM: OPTICKS2014-04-13 21:00:0018

Each segment will be released after the event as a stand-alone YouTube video on the AstrosphereVids channel, thus creating a library of content while raising money for future programs.  Planning for this Hangout-a-thon was triggered by the cuts created by sequestration, and by the current White House plans to transition education out of NASA. If the President's current budget is passed, all the funding programs CosmoQuest relies on for will be zeroed (see http://bit.ly/11m5XYg) and the project will be defunded. Rather than accept that fate, CosmoQuest is working to raise the funds needed to keep their programs going, to build new citizen science programs for researchers that don't otherwise have the means to accomplish their projects, and to contract, as they are able, extraordinary people laid off by these cuts at other institutions to keep doing great things through CosmoQuest. (Links to essays on these cuts are listed below).   CosmoQuest wants to make sure astronomy education survives and remains strong. While one team, and one telethon can't fix everything, they hope this event can raise awareness, while protected one small corner of astronomy research and education. #hangoutathon  The CosmoQuest 24 Hour Hangout-A-Thon - Main Event Page2013-06-15 18:00:00318

The Planetary Society5,214,433This week we will be talking about the effects of the impending Sequester, the across-the-board cuts to almost all federal programs, on NASA and the U.S. Space Program. The Sequester is scheduled to begin on March 1st, 2013, unless Congress acts to replace it with targeted cuts and/or revenue of equal value. Joining me is a very special guest from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Jon Morse. Dr. Morse previously served as the Director of NASA's Astrophysics Division in Washington, D.C., and was a Senior Policy Analyst for the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). He currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Research for Physical Sciences & Engineering at RPI. Dr. Morse will bring a wealth of experience on how last minute budget cuts can effect the direction and capability within NASA, how a division makes decisions to prioritize programs, and what it's like to work for NASA headquarters. As always, we will be taking your questions on our Google+ event page, Twitter via the hashtag #planetarylive, or on the YouTube comments thread for the video. We'll record the show in the first 30 minutes and then stick around and take your questions about this topic, or space in general. ------------ When Edwin Hubble observed that distant galaxies are speeding away from us in all directions, he discovered the reality that we live in an expanding Universe. Hubble worked to calculate exactly how fast this expansion is happening, creating the Hubble constant - which astronomers continue to refine and reference in their research.Astronomy Cast, Episode 279: The Hubble Constant2012-11-21 21:00:00166

NASA2,361,041Fifty years ago, President John Kennedy challenged us to go to the moon within the decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.   As we remember Neil Armstrong this week – the man who, with a single step realized the hopes of a president, this nation and the world – we are recognizing the extraordinary achievements of the past five decades achieved by our nation's space agency and where the passion to explore will lead us in the future.   President Barack Obama has set NASA on course toward an asteroid and to send humans to Mars within the next two decades. This goal is not without notable challenges, but using the knowledge, expertise and American ingenuity that has been the trademark of NASA scientists and engineers for the last half-century, NASA continues to make possible that which is seemingly impossible.   At 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 12, NASA astronauts, scientists and engineers will hold a Google+ Hangout to talk about NASA's rich history of innovation and ingenuity and talk about NASA's future goals for scientific discovery and human spaceflight. During the event, we'll be joined by: - Dan Dumbacher, Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development in NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. He is the former Director of Engineering at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Previously, he was the deputy director of safety and mission assurance at Marshall. - Ron Garan, astronaut who lived and worked aboard the International Space Station. He has been in space for 178 days and has conducted four spacewalks. - John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. He is an astronaut and researcher in high energy astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and in the emerging field of exoplanet studies. He was also the deputy director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, managing the science program for the Hubble Space Telescope and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope. - Michael Lopez-Alegria, the President of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation. He is a former Naval Aviator and test pilot (Capt., U.S. Navy, Ret.), NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander. To join the event, visit http://plus.google.com/+NASA at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.   Ask your questions of the group in the comments below or using hashtag #askNASA :50 Years Later: NASA Discusses Using Innovation and Ingenuity to do Big Things2012-09-12 21:00:00651

Guido Bibra4,763Circle Share #5: CosmoQuest, Universe Today & CoThis is a slightly more condensed circle and could be called "Friends of", because in addition to the scientists and journalists working for +CosmoQuest, +Universe Today, +The Planetary Society and +Astronomers Without Borders, it also contains all those people who have or have had some connection to them. Most of those people are in the previous circle, too. 2014-12-30 18:49:0452001
Guido Bibra4,763Circle Share #4: Science, Space & AstronomyOne of the other things I try to get involved in, or at least promote, is everything about these fields and for this reason I have a hand-picked circle with everything about science, spaceflight and exploration and astronomy around. It's a relatively low-noise group, but everyone from space journalists and scientists from the CosmoQuest & Universe Today crowd, many astronauts and a lot more people are in there. If you want even more, have a look at Fraser Cain's Super Science Circle (goo.gl/BZow8O), on which my circle was originally partly based on - but it has taken on a kind of life of its own during the last year.2014-12-30 17:50:32184004

All I want for Christmas is to go a couple days without worrying about funding for +CosmoQuest and its partner project +365 Days of Astronomy . I'm working hard on writing grants and donating all of my speaker fees to these programs. I can't solve a NASA sized budget cut easily on my own though - can you help?

Will you please give?

Get your mid-day bang of science.

We can’t observer how the universe formed, but scientists are still willing to say that we know the universe was created through a Big Bang. In this scenario, students will learn the three main lines of evidence for the Big Bang: the universe is expanding, the Cosmic Microwave Radiation, and the mixture of chemical elements.

The Earth is warm because energy created in the core of the Sun is able to travel from the Sun’s Core to its surface, and then shine through space all the way to Earth. As it travels, the light is transformed from deadly high-energy particles to the nice warm light that keeps us alive. In this Hangout, we will discuss the primary ways energy is transported: convection, conduction, and radiation.
