It took me almost 7 years to take this photograph. When I went to this location the first time it was in the middle of the afternoon and there was a massive log that blocked the view of the waterfalls. On my second visit I left my water shoes in the car....I mean why take shoes when there is a log blocking the view of the falls. Right? After this I had to wait one more year before I was able to go back and take a shot. ;))

How was this photograph created?
I use the vertical composition to create depth in this image. To get this photo I had to wade to into the fast moving spring flow wearing my neoprene water shoes. I waited until the bubbles in the water were close to my camera before releasing the shutter speed to capture the white streaking. I decidedto... more »

The Mighty Sequoias of The Mariposa Grove
The Mariposa Grove is part of Yosemite National Park. About a 30 minute drive from the valley.

The base photo of this is an HDR that I decided to texture up a bit. I used a single texture that I layered a few times with various opacities and blending modes. Overlay was the primary blending mode set to 100% then I added a duplicate of the texture at 24% Hard Light and another at 11% Darken Color.
I did

I did a few other cool tricks as well like sharpening with the High Pass filter. I added some color into the shadows by using 'apply image' to a layer mask then added that to a solid color that I set to soft light. It creates a nice color effect on only the shadows or highlights, depending on how you're inverted. Reflections in Sevilla

On my recent trip to Sevilla, I visited the magnificent Plaza de España, a majestic architectural complex built as the central office for the Ibero-American Exposition, a world fair held in Seville in 1929. It is located in the Maria Luisa Park, just south of Seville's historic center. It is a harmonious complex in a typical regional revival style, which was very popular at the time. The red brick structure is decorated with colorful painted ceramic tiles.

Sevilla is a beautiful city, full of life, energy and activity. I felt I could stay and party for a few more weeks at least :)

Star and Leaf Trails in Yosemite
When I arrived in Yosemite to shoot the rising moon earlier this week, I was pleased to find autumn leaves floating down the Merced River. Building upon the "leaf trails" concept I started in the Eastern Sierra last month, I set up for several compositions at night and tried a few short star trails images and a couple of longer time-lapse sequences to capture the motion.

Almost 76...

A year ago last May, here in San Francisco, we celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. The end of that fun-filled weekend was marked by a great fireworks show over (and under) this iconic landmark.

This week the shadow of the New Moon fell on planet Earth, crossing Queensland's Cape York in northern Australia ... for the second time in six months. On the morning of May 10, the Moon's apparent size was too small to completely cover the Sun though, revealing a "ring of fire" along the central path of the annular solar eclipse. Near mid-eclipse from Coen, Australia, a webcast team captured this telescopic snapshot of the annular phase. "Spring Green" - A recent shot from Steptoe Butte in the Palouse region of Washington State. For about two weeks per year, the cottonwoods new spring growth create a bright green glow making for great color and compliment to early growth in the fields.

Photosphere: The wreck of the Antilla, Aruba, Caribbean Sea

This 360 degree #photosphere was captured last month by our SVII camera. The image shows a portion of the Antilla, a shipwreck which lies off the northern tip of Aruba in the south Caribbean Sea.

There is a lot to see in this image; fish swim all around the wreck (wrecks often attract plenty of marine life who live amongst these solid structures), colourful, soft tube corals grow from a length of the wreck, another diver swims in the distance and our dive boat keeps watch from the above.

This is one of our favourite photospheres so far, a great way to celebrate having over 3 million people G+, +1 followers!

I wonder if the threat of mass starvation might get people to consider organic agriculture.

Bees are being wiped out by a long list of issues. One major issue is pesticides and fungicides, which not only kill bees, but weaken their immune systems and make them vulnerable to various diseases another issue.

Food companies and consumers use these chemicals because they make food cheaper. But now they're on the brink of making food VERY expensive due to shortages.

What will it take for us to reject industrial agriculture? Will the threat of starvation and massively high food prices do it?

Old Couple of Yosemite Valley
HDR photo of Yosemite Half Dome. There was this old couple that pulled out some lounge chairs and just sat for awhile soaking up the beauty of Yosemite Half Dome. It's refreshing seeing people stop and just enjoy the world around them. Our younger generation including myself doesn't do this anymore. We are too busy taking pictures and playing with our tablets.

I'm not quite sure what's going on but quite a few folks have decided to find out more about me in the past few weeks -- Hello and Welcome!

This is a shot from the very wet 2011 spring time in Yosemite when Jeff and I awoke to 6 inches of snow on top of the spring grass and sprouting trees. It's still one of my favorites from Yosemite that year.

Sorry for those of you who've seen it but sometimes one just needs to share with their new friends.

Galaxy Cove Vista

To see a vista like this takes patience, hiking, and a camera. Patience was needed in searching out just the right place and waiting for just the right time. A short hike was needed to reach this rugged perch above a secluded cove in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in California, USA. And a camera was needed for the long exposure required to bring out the faint light from stars and nebula in the background Milky Way galaxy. Moonlight and a brief artificial flash illuminated the hidden beach and inlet behind nearby trees in the above composite image taken about two weeks ago. Usually obscured McWay Falls is visible just below the image center, while the Pacific Ocean is in view to its right.

How Our Brains Set the World Spinning - Snakes in the mind

If there’s ever excuse to publish an optical illusion as cool as the “Rotating Snakes,” I’ll take it. This illusion was invented in 2003 by Akiyoshi Kitaoka of Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and ever since, Kitaoka and other scientists have been trying to figure out why it works. A new paper by Stephen Macknik at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix may have the answer.

As you’ll notice, the circles seem to rotate in response to where you look at the illusion. So Macknik and his colleagues tracked the movement of people’s eyes as they gazed at two of these wheels on a computer screen. Their subjects kept a finger pressed on a button, lifting it whenever they seemed to see the wheels move.

Solar Impulse completes non-stop, zero-fuel flight from San Francisco to Phoenix

The Solar Impulse, an airplane traveling across the United States using only solar power, is in Phoenix today, after reaching Arizona from California Saturday. It took the plane about 20 hours to travel from Mountain View, Calif., near San Francisco.

The aircraft is capable of flying at night as well as in daytime; the plane had about 75 percent of its battery power remaining when it landed in Arizona.

The Solar Impulse's "wingspan is longer than a 747 Boeing, but the entire plane weighs less than a car," as NPR's Steve Henn reported last month.

Comparisons such as that one may brought a moment of humor during Solar Impulse's trip, when the plane's pilot heard the pilot of another aircraft on his radio, asking an air traffic controller why the... more »

Lupine Sunset

I had a fantastic evening watching the sun set alongside +Brian Matiash and +Brian Bonham last night. We went up to Rowena to photograph the wildflowers ... many of the sunflowers had started to wither and just looked icky, so I found a nice patch of purple as my foreground instead.
