Eastern Amberwing (Perithemis tenera)
This is a small dragonfly and he stayed on the other side of the drainage ditch, so this is not as close as I'd like. I say "he" because, based on descriptions of their behavior, I'm guessing it's a male. He stayed on this twig or sashayed out a ways and came back, which indicates he had chosen this as a mating site. Indeed, while I was watching, another one come in and out several times but did not stay. That was probably the female and maybe she didn't like the "amenities" of this spot!
This drainage ditch skirts a small crop dusting service's airfield in northeastern Louisiana. I spent over an hour there a week ago. Dragonflies were plentiful. Most frustrating was that two really unusual looking ones were cruising up and down the drainage ditch. One was pink, and it finally landed just briefly. I... more »

Daredevil
Please note the critter that surprised me by showing up on my computer screen! I am not sure, but I think it is a rather long-bodied spider because I think I can count four legs on the far side. But I can only see three legs on the near side, which is also less sharply focused. So... I either have a 7-legged spider or some other kind of critter. Opinions welcome!

Eastern Pondhawk (Erythemis simplicicollis), immature
Common Green Darner (Anax junius), male
For #odonatapoker +#OdonataPoker and tagging +Jim Miller in the hopes he can confirm this identification. This guy was very elusive and the only one of his kind in a place where dozens of Blue Dashers and Four-Spotted Pennants were zooming around. I only saw him briefly and felt lucky to get one decent shot. What puzzles me is that although his abdomen does have a slight tinge of bluishness, all of the photographs of this species show a much bluer abdomen. The bluish tinge is probably because this is a male in the process of turning blue, the color of adult males.

Tail Slap, Juvenile Humpback, Mámala Bay, Oahu
Oh, wow! #WorldOceansDay !! What a great opportunity to reshare one of my favorite photographs and photographic experiences of all time. No, it is not a spectacular shot. But living where I do, my opportunities to whale watch are extremely limited, so I was overjoyed when a juvenile humpback honored us with his presence in on a whale siting trip in January 2012.
Thanks, +Robin Griggs Wood & +Brad Buckmaster for spreading the word.

Parasol Party (Nymphaea mexicana)
I love the lily pads when they are new. They are a velvety green in color and haven't yet been damaged by wind, waves, bugs and so forth. And later in the summer, fewer will be nodding and bobbing above the water like this. I don't know if they get torn off, or the stalks settle down so that the leaves float on the surface. And then the beautiful flowers and buds on stalks that are hard to get close too.... Nevertheless and in spite of their beauty, they grow so well in southern climate that they choke our wetlands. (I think these are "mexicana," but I'm not positive.)

Happy Birthday, Kimberton!
I was going to share a photo of actual unicorn poop, because I surprised a unicorn "in the act" one day. But he ran off before I got a shot! Darn.
Anyway, I went looking online and although it is possible to find photos of unicorn poop, I found something even better. Maybe my mind is in the gutter a different place because of +Tom Tran's birthday greeting, but anyway, I thought this recipe for unicorn horns was just the ticket! See, you break them open and out come little unicorn turds! Kind of a two-fer.
Check out this link and you'll see what I mean: http://www.instructables.com/id/Unicorn-Horn-Cookies/
And have a good one +kimberton pemberly!

Great Blue Heron Lands on Lake Martin
In fact, if you take this photo into lightbox, you'll see a pinkish-redish area at the base and at the curve of the left wing. I think this bird was injured. I spooked him near shore he went up, turned and came back down again, then took off again and finally got airborne. Sooo hope he/she will be okay. These are just the most magnificent birds.

Finally...! With the end of the semester, being sick and travel, I thought I've NEVER get around to ordering my copy of HWSI3. Just did it and can't wait to see it.
For those of you who don't know, this is the third version of How We See It..., a collaboration of Google+ women photographers. It's a gorgeous book, and all proceeds go to the NOW Love Your Body Foundation. It's available at Blurb in two sizes and an eBook version.

Blinded by the lights of their landing craft in the background, I could just make out thin lavender bodies with long, slender golden heads that seemed barely attached. A few had no head, but looked at me with a single eye on the end of the body. The security guards..?

Irene Goes For It
Just came from a wonderful afternoon with +Irene Kato and her family. What a blast! We visited photojournalist Steve Schapiro's amazing exhibit--not only because the photos are powerful, but for me because I remember well the events he documented: the march to Selma, the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., the presidential campaign of Bobby Kennedy, and more. Must get one of his books.
Then I had the wonderful privilege of meeting her family, and watching her husband prepare the pot stickers I soon was consuming in great quantity. Then we went out into the fading light to do a little photowalk right there in her neighborhood. We started with her back yard, but here we leaned over into the neighbor's yard and ended up IN another neighbor's yard!
Wonderful visit! Thanks for everything, +Irene Kato!

Roof Dweller
This little green bug is on the "roof" of a pitcher plant. The pitcher plant bog is in the Kissatchie National Forest near Fort Polk, La. It is the largest one I have ever seen, extending as far as I could see along a "seam" between piney woods and hard wood forest.

Help?!
I hate not posting photos but the new G+ is still not working for me. I am wondering if it is working for others or if you have found work-arounds.
I can post photos and I can put photos in albums, but I cannot connect the two. The only place plus-ones and comments show up is in the "photos from posts" album, and even if I go into Picasa Web and copy or move the photo into the proper album, the comments and plus-ones do not move or copy with it.
Am I the only one having this problem? Is there a work-around? Does anyone have any idea when G+ expects to have this fixed?
Thanks.

One of a Kind
This is a wind chime. It is definitely one of a kind. It was built by my friend, Dr. Charles Allen, a botanist and artist of the ordinary. He takes ordinary stuff that most of us throw away and makes unique works of art that you can see if you visit Allen Acres B&B, near the tiny village of Cravens, La. I highly recommend it. He will take you on a tour of his gardens, where you will see amazing things tucked among the Louisiana native plants: trellis of wood and bamboo, a tree house, a frog pond, bottle trees, birdhouses, a bicycle fence, the toy understory and more. BTW, he does not think he's an artist. #iphonography

Zarucco Duskywing (Erynnis zarucco) on Lantana
Wow! I'm at one of my fave places--Allen Acres near Pitkin, La.,--and I almost didn't get to shoot today. Cleaning sensor of my camera before heading out this morning, I accidentally turned off one of the "custom functions" that must be turned on so that I can use my old, film camera lenses on my DSLR. Could not figure out what was wrong. Fortunately had internet; went on line to JustAnswers and got help from Mike. Had to pay for the info, but it was worth it. Thanks, Mike, wherever you are!!!! Got the camera working and went out quickly in the fading light. Shot 40+ frames and this is one of the better ones.
