An Osprey watches fish in the shallows of Fossil Creek Reservoir near Fort Collins, Colorado. This big guy (or gal) was watching ginormous carp swim lazily by beneath his perch. I doubt seriously whether he could have snatched one of the larger ones, but he certainly appeared to be thinking seriously about it. I would've loved to see him try. :)

Assassin Bug Nymph ( family Reduviidae ) -- Bingham, Illinois
A tiny assassin bug nymph navigates the forest of hairs on my forearm in the deep forest of southern Illinois. These creatures are fierce predators that will prey on insects much larger than themselves, such as grasshoppers. I loved the ornate, Samurai-like markings and spines on his abdomen.

A Spicebush Swallowtail ( Papilio troilus ) butterfly cocoon on the side of an old shed in southern Illinois -- This butterfly derives its name from its most common host plant, the spicebush, and can be found in deciduous woods or woody swamps in the eastern U.S. Their cocoons look like tiny gargoyles to me, and I love the fact that there appears to be a creepy smiley face on this one. :)

Om Nom Nom Nom -- A tiny thrips stuffs granules of pollen into his mouth with both "hands" while perched on the stamen of a tiny white flower. After each mouthful he would gather another armload of pollen and munch busily away at it while appearing to curiously regard the photographer. I wonder what was going through his tiny mind. Probably not much... Most thrips ( Order Thysanoptera ) are about 1mm long and feed on a large variety of sources, both plant and animal. They are one of the most ubiquitous Arthropods on Earth, but are so tiny that you rarely notice them. Taking floral macros is one good way to find them. :)

Humble Beauty -- It's probably fair to say that the dandelion is one of the most hated "weeds" in the world. It is also one of the most beautiful. I love the golden glow of those delicate yellow curlicues rising from the center of that lush spread of tiny petals. Rabbits love them too, for slightly different reasons. :)

Brood II Is Alive -- Over the next few weeks, billions of cicadas will be emerging from the ground across a swath of the East Coast ranging from North Carolina to Connecticut. This particular brood of "17-year cicadas" have been biding their time underground since the Clinton administration in 1996. Scientists suspect that these insects adopted such a long life cycle as an evolutionary ploy to overwhelm their predators with sheer numbers and surprise. This photo shows a different species of cicada taken in the Midwest, but I wanted to pay tribute to Brood II as it emerges. :)

A large and very colorful Crawfish ( crawdad, crayfish ) takes a defensive posture as I slowly move the camera toward him to get a closer shot. Crawfish are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters, and are mostly found in freshwater brooks and streams. They are very common in the Midwest - this was taken on a rural road in southern Illinois.
