Gene Bowker66,106  #Alphabetcircles  - Gene's Active Photographers on G+ *Part One: First Name A-CMeet almost 400 ACTIVE G+ photographers with First Names between A and C.It's that time again, I've been doing Spring Cleaning even though it isn't Spring officially yet here and going through my photography circles again to check out what folks have been sharing and see who is still active on G+.I've visited each of the folks included in this circles within the last week and they have been active in the last month (or so) and regularly post their OWN photography. They come from all over the world and their styles vary as much as their choice of equipment and subject matter. There are a lot of folks in here that I've been friends with for years, but there are also a lot of newer folks who you've probably not met yet and who I am looking forward to getting to know better myself.Criteria1. Actively posting photos on G+2. We circle each other3. Primarily post their OWN photography (that's a judgement call on my part)4. "Safe for work" (another judgement call)Why you should follow them?1. Add active photographers to your stream without a lot of inactive accounts.2. Find some new folks to interact with who are ACTIVE on G+As always.. if you do add them.. the best way to do that is to create a new circle and that way you can watch it and decide if they fit with you or notNot in here?1. Maybe we haven't met yet?  If so, I'd love to hear from you and I'll be sure to check out your stream. Be sure to circle me if you haven't as I check those who add me regularly.2. Maybe you don't post public? If not, there is a good chance that you looked inactive to me.3. Maybe you don't post "primarily" photography... once again that is subjective.Feel free to reshare with your friends if you want, but there are NO requirements to be in this circle except for the criteria above.I'm slowly going through the rest of the Alphabet and as I complete each section I'll be sharing them in this series.  If you follow along you can easily add 1000+ photographers to your stream too.p.s. don't forget tomorrow is  #transporttuesday   Gene Bowker+Rusted Rail Images 2014-03-11 00:18:29394752594CC G+

Fraser Cain824,747Super Science Circle for October, 2013I know it's been a while, so it's time for a new Super Science Circle - the October 2013 edition. In case you weren't aware, the Super Science Circle is a list of more than 400 people who are actively engaged on Google+ and regularly post about science and education. We've got journalists, scientists, even a few astronauts. The Super Science Circle should be your best response to anyone who tells you that Google+ is just a ghost town. If you love science, this circle will deliver the goods. If you know anyone who actively posts about science, please let me know and I'll add them to the list.2013-10-04 20:14:53415304682CC G+

Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday  #sharedcircles  #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle  #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle  #handpickedcircles Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles cre2013-09-03 17:01:2229510510CC G+
Georges Pauly14,521Thomas HawkShared publicly  -  30 Aug 2013 2500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 2 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Yesterday I shared last name A-Da.  This one , part 2 of 5, today, represents Da-Ho.  I'll share the remaining three next week.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 3, 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpn*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of domain errors.  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-01 19:56:06482204CC G+

Fraser Cain779,548Super Science Circle - May 2013 EditionNeed more science in your Google+? Well, here's all the science you can handle! Enjoy my latest, heavily curated edition of the Super Science Circle. Please share this circle... for Science! For the uninitiated, I maintain a circle of 450+ people who are active on Google+ and regularly post on Google+. In this circle you'll find scientists, journalists, astronauts, educators, and science enthusiasts. By importing this circle into your own circles, you'll immediately gain a vibrant and fascinating feed of amazing science stories.I recognize that it might be too much science, so I suggest you create a brand new temporary circle and evaluate the people in the circle. Only transfer the keepers to your permanent circles. Then, when I update the circle next month, rinse and repeat. Are you active on G+ and regularly post about science? +mention me and I'll check out your profile.Remember, please share this post2013-05-22 19:26:51456348390CC G+

Fraser Cain770,050Super Science Circle - April 2013 EditionIt's time for another sharing of my Super Science Circle. This is a collection of 400+ active people on Google+ who often post about science. If anyone tells you G+ is a ghost town (not that anyone does any more), get them to import this circle. PLEASE SHARE THIS CIRCLE... FOR SCIENCE!I have personally reviewed each and every person on this list, to make sure that they:1. Are active and engaged on Google+2. Regularly post science-related stories on Google+In this list you'll find scientists, journalists, researchers, professors, astronauts and general science enthusiasts. Not everyone in this list is going to be to your personal liking. So what you'll want to do is import the list into a temporary circle. Then move people over one by one into more permanent locations in your circles.I'm always looking for more people to add to the list, so if you know people who meet my criteria, feel free to nominate them.Again, please share the circle. Fraser Cain759,117The Return of the Super Science CircleOkay, I'll admit, I made a mistake in retiring the Super Science Circle. I wasn't wrong; Communities are still the future and the best way to make friends here on Google+. But I realized that the Super Science Circle is simple and efficient way to get new people to see that Google+ isn't a ghost town.PLEASE SHARE THIS POST... FOR SCIENCE!When I was attending +ScienceOnline 2013, I must have helped dozens of people join Google+, and the first thing I had them do was import this circle. It's an invaluable tool for getting new people up to speed. So, I just did a complete refresh on the circle. I examined every single member and judged them according to my two-part criteria:1. Active in the last 30 days or so.2. Regularly post on scientific topics. If you know anyone who might make a good candidate for this circle, please let me know.As always, import this circle into a new, temporary circle, and then you can refresh it when I share a new version.DON'T FORGET TO SHARE THIS POST2013-03-19 22:39:3139967163160CC G+

A rather unexpected find while out mountain biking this past weekend (when all I had on me was my iPhone ... of course)!

A turtle (Trichemys scripta) that should not have been where it was ... RES ... not native to this area.

But very cute ... I have a soft spot for the turtles so few wouldn't give a second thought to.

What strange creature lurks beneath the calm waters of the streams and swamps in southern Ontario, Canada? The Eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens) - the only species of newt in this area :)

These newts actually contain toxins in their skin that are lethal to most predators.

Always a great sight out in the field!

A rough life for this Northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon) on a warm sunny day this past weekend!

Us Canadians never waste an opportunity to bask out in the sun!

Here are few quick tips to help you conserve amphibian and reptile populations in your own backyard.

Episode 13 of a year-long 24 episode education-outreach video series starring Whit Gibbons (Herpetologist and Author), we have produced in cooperation with The Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy.

Red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) are not eager to face Monday's either!

This one thought it was safely tucked away from view yesterday half under a log ... but a bright red stripe on a blue tail isn't necessarily the best camouflage against brown branches and leaves :D

The filming season is well underway here and we've got big plans for this year!

Stay tuned for footage from multiple continents - including this Moor frog (Rana arvalis) from Europe!

One of the best finds to make out in the field: amphibian spawn! Will definitely be checking back there shortly to see how the little guys are developing!

PS Pardon the poor quality photo ... I wasn't about to stumble through the water to grab this shot and risk stepping on anything swimming around in there. I happened to spot this clump out in the water while standing on the trail.

Today's Dose of AWESOME!

With words like Demonic + Poison in its name, you will not see anything more AWESOME than this today :D

Amazing Amphibian #8: The Demonic Poison Frog (or Yapacana’s Little Red Frog), Minyobates steyermarki, is listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its range in humid montane forest habitats on the Cerro Yapacana in southern Venezuela is probably less than 10km². This small species, like other Poison Dart Frogs, is known for being highly toxic, a feature they obtain through their diet.

Check our new Amazing Amphibian for this week: Gymnopis multiplicata It is not a worm or a snake - this is definitely an amphibian and you won't believe what the young do! These amphibians take "amazing" to the extreme!

Gymnopis multiplicata is known for the live birth of their young, which hatch inside their mother. After the young have used up their yolk sacs, they continue to feed by scraping their small teeth along the insides of their mother until they are born. The oviducts, where the babies are developing and feeding, quickly produce more layers of tissue, and the babies’ feeding does not appear to hurt their mother

Our new video (with the master field herper himself: Whit Gibbons) is perfect for field herpers to share with friends to illustrate just how important field herping is and why we all need to get out in the field as often as we can!

And if you are not sure what field herping is this short video will introduce you to it ... and hopefully inspire you to try it out. Brace yourself though: it's addicting!
