It's that time of year once again - please keep your eyes open for amphibians on the roads as they make their way to breeding ponds.

There's also lots of amphibian road patrols all around that are in urgent need of volunteers during this time of year - maybe you can help them save lives!

Reminder: Amphibians are now out of hibernation and crossing roads in parts of Europe!___It's that time of year once again - please keep your eyes open for amphibians on the roads as they make their way to breeding ponds.

A turtle (Trichemys scripta) that should not have been where it was ... RES ... not native to this area.

But very cute ... I have a soft spot for the turtles so few wouldn't give a second thought to.

What strange creature lurks beneath the calm waters of the streams and swamps in southern Ontario, Canada? The Eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens) - the only species of newt in this area :)

These newts actually contain toxins in their skin that are lethal to most predators.

One of the best finds to make out in the field: amphibian spawn! Will definitely be checking back there shortly to see how the little guys are developing!

Eastern/Red-spotted newt spawn (Notophthalmus viridescens)

PS Pardon the poor quality photo ... I wasn't about to stumble through the water to grab this shot and risk stepping on anything swimming around in there. I happened to spot this clump out in the water while standing on the trail.
