Testing on Square... and Round.

We have been doing some testing of Android Wear applications on devices with round displays, and are excited about the apps that are ready to go right now. I wanted to share a few hints about dealing with some common pitfalls, where some apps would fail with exceptions, since they were not tested on the AndroidWearRound emulator from the Android SDK.

The most common mistake can occur when using WatchViewStub, which inflates either a rect_activity_my.xml or a round_activity_my.xml. A developer might mistakenly add the UI views to only the rectangular layout file and make calls to findViewById(). Since the round layout was not filled out, findViewById() will return null, and will then throw a NullPointerException.

If you want to use the same layout between devices, or if you require a rectangular layout, you can use BoxInsetLayout from the wearable support library. This layout ensures that everything will automatically be kept within a box that fits within any round display. To find out more about designing for round displays, check out this I/O Byte video Fullscreen apps for Android Wear

Make sure that you test your apps on your current square devices, the AndroidWearSquare emulator, and the AndroidWearRound emulator. This way, your applications will be ready and working for when round devices start arriving in the market soon!

Note: there is a bug in the current AVD setup where there are three AndroidWearRound profiles available to choose from in the “Device” dropdown. Make sure you pick the middle one for now, one of the others is not correct. This is currently being fixed and should be released to the public soon.___Testing on Square... and Round.

Introducing the Android Fundamentals courseware offered through Udacity...

Congrats team!

Today we're launching the latest resource for developers who want to learn how to develop Android apps: our online Udacity training course "Developing Android Apps: Android Fundamentals".

https://www.udacity.com/course/ud853

*Note that the full course materials -- all the videos, quizzes, and forums -- are available for free for all students by selecting View Courseware. *

It features Developer Advocates +Reto Meier, +Dan Galpin, and +Katherine Kuan as instructors, and they’ve created lessons that are both deeply technical, but also (we think) a lot of fun.

With Android expanding rapidly into emerging markets, and growing beyond phones and tablets into wearables, auto, and TV - learning the fundamentals behind Android development represents an opportunity to affect and improve the lives of billions of people.

We look forward to seeing what the next wave of Android developers build, and we’ll keep exploring new ways to help you become better developers.

Great initial set of #AndroidWear  apps available on Google Play!

Apps for Android Wear launching today!
A collection of apps for Android Wear is now available on Google Play (goo.gl/LHjWNr)

In addition to notifications bridged from the phone, Android Wear allows developers to write code that runs directly on the wearable. Nearly all the APIs Android developers are already familiar with are accessible on the wearable allowing fully customized UI, reading sensors directly, integrating with voice actions, and sharing data between the phone or tablet and the wearable.

We've worked with some friends to create some great early Android Wear integrations.  Please take a look through this photo album for more inspiration and start extending your app for Android Wear today!___Great initial set of #AndroidWear  apps available on Google Play!

Sharing what’s up our sleeve: Android coming to wearables

Today we’re excited to extend Android to wearables. And we’re starting with the most familiar wearable—watches. We’re already working with several consumer electronics manufacturers, including Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung; chip makers Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, Mediatek and Qualcomm; and fashion brands like the Fossil Group to bring you watches powered by Android Wear later this year. If you’re a developer, check out developer.android.com/wear to download a Developer Preview so you can tailor your existing app notifications for watches powered by Android Wear. Look out for more developer resources and APIs coming soon.

Trying to make your app "Svelte-friendly"?    Have a look at this post.

Android 4.4 introduces a new tool for analyzing how your app uses system resources over time -- Process Stats. Existing tools let you spot-check your app’s memory use, but Process Stats now gives you broader, time-based view of your app’s behavior.

Process Stats is based on a new procstats system service that continually monitors the state of all app processes over time, aggregating that information and collecting PSS memory samples from those processes while doing so.

You can view a graphical representation of your app’s memory information right on the device, by going to Settings > Developer options > Process Stats. For more detailed information, you can also access the raw data collected by the underlying procstats service through an adb shell command

Check out the post below for a walkthrough of Process Stats and details on the memory data behind it and why it's so useful to you as you analyze your app.

Better support for subscriptions

In-app Billing version 3 API is expanded to support in-app subscriptions. The V3 API now lets you sell the same types of subscriptions as in IAB v2, and under the same terms.

We're currently enabling this feature across all compatible Android devices, a process we expect to take about 7 days. Until all devices have been enabled, we recommend that do not publish an app that uses IAB V3 subscriptions. We'll let you know here (and in the docs) as soon the process is complete.

If you want to get started developing and don't want to wait for the automatic feature rollout, simply reboot your device to force an immediate update.
We've also updated the docs and sample app to show the implementation details.

With this launch, In-app billing V3 now covers all of the features offered by V2. We strongly recommend that you migrate existing applications from V2 to V3 as soon as possible to take advantage of the API's increased robustness and new features.

For more information, refer to the updated API docs:

The Android device frame generator has just graduated to developer.android.com!

Introducing the Device Art Generator, a new page in the Distribute tab that allows you to quickly wrap your app screenshots in real device artwork. This provides better visual context for your app screenshots on your web site or in other promotional materials.

For the time being, only frames for the recent Nexus phones and tablets (and the XOOM) are available.___Refresh your outdated Google Play feature graphics with the frame generator...

The Android developer site looks a bit different today.

Android Developer Site Redesign

Every year Google I/O means there are plenty of new eyes on the Android Developer Site, so we've taken the opportunity of this year's I/O to update developer.android.com to provide a more streamlined, simplified, and focused experience.

As developers, our tasks fall into three baskets: Design, develop, and distribute; so we've restructured developer.android.com to reflect this.

We'll be sharing more tips to help you design, develop, and distribute your apps at Google #IO12 , with all sessions being recorded and many of them live streamed during the event.

What do you think of our new look?___The Android developer site looks a bit different today.

While we're on the subject of the just-launched I/O app (http://goo.gl/pB9aH), I'd like to share some nicely framed screenshots. And a congrats to the engineering team behind the app and backend — you guys rock.

Many app developers have been asking me about Google Play subscriptions for a while. I'm glad to see this launch. Now there is one more way to bring your digital services to your users.

In-App Subscriptions

Starting today, you can use In-app Billing to sell monthly or annual subscriptions from inside of your apps. You just set the price and billing interval and Google Play manages the purchase transactions for you.

You can get started with subscriptions right away by reading the In-app Billing documentation and downloading the updated sample app.___Many app developers have been asking me about Google Play subscriptions for a while.
