Winter is coming
By +Ingrid Kjelling Photography

Location:
Uttakleiv - Lofoten - Norway

After spending a couple of hours exploring this awesome location bad weather started to roll in on us as the daylight was coming to an end. Definitely a `must visit` spot if you ever find yourself in Lofoten, I know for sure that I`m going back there as soon as I can! Definitely one of those spots where you could easily spend days exploring

Glitter and green gold
Ingrid Kjelling Photography

Honestly. What can compare to spending your night under a green sky in a glittering #snow covered landscape? This night just before christmas was one of those magical nights - not only was it my second time out photographing the #northernlights ever - the green magic seemed to never end. It was nothing but amazing and with a bit of luck we stumbled upon this awesome little hut.

The original plan was to photograph the lights above the characterisitc square mountain peak '#Steigtind' that you can see in the background. My excitement levels when I saw this hut cannot be explained - I had this composition in mind straight after seeing the hut and I'm happy it worked out even though the northern lights weren't the best facing that way smile emoticon Definitely worth running around for hours in deep snow with 5... more »

The Milkyway setting over Wyadup - Western Australia

I have finally decided to invest in the PTgui stitching software and this is the first milkyway panorama I have stitched. I know the composition and foreground is a bit .. boring, but at least I managed to put it all together and that was exciting enough :D

Conclusion: I am never ever going to stitch in photoshop again. Even though it is rather time consuming adding control points and matching up stars the end result is so so much better. Now that I know what is possible I feel much better prepared to go out and capture some serious multiple row nightsky panoramas. Already excited to go out there again

The technical details:

8 vertical images stitched in PTgui
ISO 6400, f2/8, 30 seconds exposure
Canon 6d + tokina 16-28mm f2.8 lens

Panorama of the milkyway and northern lights
by +Ingrid Kjelling photography

Location: Geitvågen - Bodø - Norway January 2015
Equipment: Canon 6d + Samyang 14mm f2.8 lens

The night I shot this was very special for me. It was the first time I had the opportunity to photograph the northern lights. I was so excited and spent most of my time jumping around like a little kid testing out different settings etc - doing a proper panorama didn`t even cross my mind at all while on location.

The other day I was looking through my photos from this night and I discovered that I had shot 4 photos that could potentially be stitched together as a panorama - and it kinda worked... This photo is a combined panorama made up of 4 individual shots taken at different angles and spots.. The technical aspect of the panorama is far from perfect (wonky horizon, the sides of the photo are pretty stretched and more noisy than the rest, the landscape does not align perfectly etc etc) However if you don`t look too closely I reckon it makes a nice scenery and that is why I have decided to share it with you anyway :)

Chasing the northern lights is the most exciting thing I have ever done as a landscape photographer. The `never knowing` where and when its going to explode is incredibly exciting. Some nights I found myself running around like a maniac in knee deep snow in the middle of nowhere just to find a suitable composition and foreground interest to put in front of the green display.

Looking forward to the next time I get to chase the Aurora once again.

Nights to Remember
by +Ingrid Kjelling Photography

Another shot from a very exciting and cold January night earlier this year. The location is Geitvågen - a popular spot just north of Bodø, Norway.

I am excited to say that I am heading back up to Norway this september, crossing my fingers there will be some lovely autumn colours and dark nights with more northern lights to capture and enjoy :)

This one was shot with the Canon 6d + Tokina 16-28mm f2.8 lens @ ISO2000, f4, 25sec

If you are amazed by the northern lights be sure to follow +AURORA skycam, soon the team will be providing you with live broadcast of the northern lights!

Canal Rocks jetty at night
by Ingrid Kjelling Photography

I shot this sometime last year. While on location I had some issues with my remote controller and I wasn`t able to do the shoot I originally wanted to. When I came home I wasn`t overly pleased with the result hence this image got archived in my `not quite there` pile of photos. Now about 8 months later I have found that this image is not too bad after all and deserves a spot in my portfolio.

Do you find yourself revisiting your photos weeks, months or even years down the track and suddenly you find yourself liking a photo that you previously considered a `fail`? I do, therefore I never delete any photos (unless they are out of focus etc) - because you never know what you might find when you revisit your archive with fresh eyes 1 year down the track smile emoticon

Nordic nights
by +Ingrid Kjelling

As much as I am a wuss when it comes to cold weather I really miss these north Norwegian winter nights. This night was particularly fun as the aurora was so indecisive. It resulted in a lot of `running around` in knee deep snow to find some decent compositions that included the green action. Here is one of my fellow photographer friend. And yes - at this stage I think I was regretting not being on the other side of those mountain peaks.

Sunkissed
by +Ingrid Kjelling Photography

After weeks and weeks of darkness there is something so magical when the winter sun finally make it above the horizon to kiss the north Norwegian mountains good morning. It was very nice to be back home in Norway to experience this time of year again. Even though I am not a big fan of the cold the scenery makes it all so very worth it.

This easily recognisable triangular mountain peak is called `Olstind`. Here seen from Hamnøy in Lofoten - Northern Norway.

*No tripod - No worries! *

Being without a tripod does`t necessarily mean that you can`t do long exposures - you just need to be a bit creative about it :) Yes, your composition will be very restricted but you can still manage a couple of decent shots.

This is a 6 second exposure of the islamic art gallery in Doha - Qatar after sunset (and a behind the scenes photo of my photography apprentice who is picking up all my tricks quickly ;P) We got to spend 23 hours in Doha when travelling back to Australia from Norway because we missed our original flight. Not a bad deal getting to explore a new exciting city at the cost of the airline. However, slightly annoying that tripods had to be left in the checked luggage at the airport :)

The Rope

I'm always stoked when I go out in the middle of the night and stumble upon something unexpected. I went to this location to photograph the aurora above the red house but in the dark I found this tangled little gem of a foreground interest which I felt added a bit of depth to the scene. I always have an idea in my head of what I want to capture before I go out, but I also always walk the location (even in the dark) to look for something unexpected or different to put in my frame. Do you ever plan your photos before you go out?

Just another Aurora Selfie ;P

I wasn't overly inspired by the foreground interest at this location so did a few selfies instead. For this one I pumped up the ISO to 3200 to allow for a 10 second exposure. A lot easier to stand still for 10 seconds than 25 ;P

On our last night in Bodø just hours before our morning flight out of town miss aurora decided to put on a show. Who needs sleep before a 30 hour travel anyway? :D

Changing it up today with a photo from Melbourne - Australia shot Last winter.

This is #Hosier Lane / #Rutledge Lane - famous for its ever changing #graffitti and #streetart. I shot this with the samyang 14mm, on ISO100, 20 seconds exposure and god knows that f. Since the lens is fully manual the f number is not saved in the image exif data. However from memory I believe I was shooting on f8-f13.

Looking forward to visit this spot again next time we venture over to the #Melbourne.  It definitely is a photographers playground!

Have a nice weekend everyone!! :)

Glitter and green gold

My excitement levels when I saw this hut cannot be explained - I had this composition in mind straight after seeing the hut and I'm happy it worked out even though the northern lights weren't the best facing that way smile emoticon Definitely worth running around for hours in deep snow with 5... more »

While visiting arctic Norway we got to experience the most magical time of year: those days when the sun finally returns after weeks/months of hiding behind the horizon. It is truly magical and the light this compined arctic sunrise / sunset produces is nothing but magnificent. The way the it lights up the mountains can't be described - you have to see it for yourself in real life to understand the magic. No photo can even come close to portray it properly if you ask me.

Here I did a 6 image stitch panorama shot on 28mm with the tokina 16-28mm. I used a Novoflex VR system II panorama rail to get all the images to align perfectly. All images shot on 30 seconds to smooth out the water making it easier to get the images to match - I used a wonderpana ND32 filter (5 stop).

Norrbotten - Sweden

This was the view from where we drove our snowmobile off the track and into the ditch. (Never let an australian drive your snowmobile;P)

On this trip out in the Swedish lappland I learnt that my tripod does not like it when it goes below -20*C. It was of no use as it froze completely. It was stunning out there but I didn't really take home any photos at all. My hands were too cold to even bother packing up the camera bag from the snowmobile boot;P

Skivika - Bodø - Norway

The night before our 7am flight out of Bodø the aurora was stronger than I've ever seen it. I first decided to let it go since I was super tired and had to pack for my upcoming travel back to Australia. Buut at 1 am we couldn't take it anymore and had to head out. Since it was already late and only 6 hours until our flight we ended up going to the closest beach around just minutes from my house even though I knew this location had many limitations.

I can list many things that I dislike about this photo - I especially dislike how the nearby street lights lit up the foreground in a yellowish colour And I really dislike that the light came from every angle casting a shadow of my tripod and me in the photo. However, It does showcase what an amazing neighbourhood I grew up in.

'Lift me up'

Luckily for us the two last nights in Norway where green. This was shot on the last location we visited this night. It was one of those nights were the lights never ended and in the end we had to turn around and walk back to the car because both our toes and fingers couldn't handle the cold anymore ;P

After looking at this I've decided I need to try out some focus stacking on my next night-outing :)

Doha - Qatar
The Museum of Islamic Art

Finally back in Australia after over 50 hours of travel. What was suppose to be a 24 hour trip Norway - Australia ended up with a 23 hour stop over in Doha / Qatar due to our first flight from Norway being delayed.

However, this ment we got a good nights sleep at a fancy hotel and explore the city of Doha. The only silly thing was that my tripod was in my other luggage which we had to leave at the airport so no super long exposures for me. This was handheld at 1/15 of a second to get some flow in the water fountain.

Spirits in the sky

Have you ever seen photos of the northern lights converted into black and white? I don't think I have but while editing this one I converted it to BW just for fun and..I really liked the feel of it in monochrome.

This lavvo was found somewhere in the forests surrounding Bodø - Norway

Emerald Sea
Bodø - Norway

The ocean and the nightsky is by far my favorite subjects. Yesterday night the northern lights put on a pretty decent show here in Bodø and my Australian partner finally got a real taste of what Northern Norway has to offer. We even drove past a moose on the way home - a very successful night for the australian tourist ;P

I've started using my tokina 16-28mm lens for my nightscapes now and I am really happy with it. This was shot with the tokina on the Canon 6d camera @ 16mm - f4, ISO2000, 25 seconds

Panorama view from #Hamnøy / #Reine - #Lofoten, #Norway.

This is a 9 image stitch #panorama I shot with the tokina 16-28mm at 28mm with the help of my #novoflex vr system II panorama rail.
The sun is finally back above the horizon which results in this amazing pink light on the mountain tops as it rises.

See that little yellow house on the right hand side? It is easy to feel tiny amonst these giant peaks.

3 days is definitely not enough time to explore Lofoten. I could easily spend 3 days alone on just this beach. If you don't have Lofoten on your travel bucket list - add it straight away!! :D

Leading lines at Skagsanden Beach in Lofoten, Norway
by Ingrid Kjelling

Our first stop at todays little roadtrip was Skagsanden Beach. It was cold, it was damn windy, but what an amazing photography playground! So many different interesting patterns in the sand, leading lines and what not surrounded by all these majestetic mountain peaks. Could easily have spent my whole weekend at this beach but many more amazing places to discover the next two days.

'Welcome to Lofoten'

We arrived at our accomodation in Hamnøy / Lofoten about 1 hour ago. Both the arch of the milkyway (Unfortunately the galactic core of the milkyway can not be seen from this part of the world as it is below the horizon) and a faint aurora borealis welcomed us with a little show behind the spectacular 'Olstinden' mountain. All seen from the parking lot of our accommodation.

Now time for some food and crossing our fingers for a better show later on tonight. One thing is for sure, Its going to be a great weekend!!

2014

It's been a great year for me photography wise. My photo year kicked off in late february with a trip to New Zealand with +Timothy Poulton  and +Rob Dickinson . After this my interest for nightsky photography grew stronger and with lots of inspiration from my friend +Michael Goh  my own milkyway journey began. To top the year off I've spent the last 3 weeks of my year home in Northern Norway. I finally got to photograph these beautiful green lights I've been dreaming of for many years already. I grew up under them but never had the right equipment or knowledge to chase them with a camera. Now I finally got both

I think I've learnt more about photography the last year than I have the 10 last years together. I feel I've graduated from a 'snapper' to a photographer and it feels great. I've never had friends who was interested in photography beforeb... more »

I've never had friends who was interested in photography before but this year I've made so many. I am so greatful for all the new friends I've made and new supporters that has decided to followed my journey. All I can say is that is has been great and your support is what keeps me going.

Thank you for an awesome 2014 and lets dream bigger and achieve more in 2015!

Jump onboard my aurora taxi ;)

This location in the woods was rather scary and I got a bit paranoid. Paranoid that we would be run over by a moose as we had seen a couple earlier in the day,

Camera and settings
This was an unplanned shoot so I didn't have my samyang 14mm with me but the tokina 16-28mm f2.8 id the trick.
ISO 800 - 20 seconds exposure.
Light inside the grill was achieved by putting a flashlight inside it

Location

Green Christmas
Bodøsjøen - Bodø - Norway

You can't really predict exactly when the northern lights will come. Yesterday I was watching the 1 hour forecast all evening and at 1am it suddenly spiked. I quickly  packed on all my thermals and headed out. It is the strongest and most incredible aurora I've seen so far this holiday. It was nothing but amazing and it seemed to never end. In the end I had to call it a day and drive back home because my toes were so frozen and my fingers couldn't even push the camera button any more :P

When it comes to settings it depends on light pollution, if the moon is out, how bright the lights are and how much they are moving. I've been shooting on around ISO1600 (but also down at ISO800, or as high as ISO 3200), f2.8 to f4, and everything from 10-25seconds exposure depending on the light. I personally avoid going above 25 seconds as I shoot on 14mm  on full frame and this makes stars start trailing which I don't want. My best tip to capturing the aurora borealis is to try different settings and ISOs while you are out first time and see what worked best when you come back to the computer. AAANd don't forget foreground interest :)  I also shoot at around Kelvin 2600-2800 white balance.

To små båthus

Yesterday night was nothing but amazing. 5 hours of driving around chasing the best light - frozen fingers and toes. Got some very very very good photos - need to sit on the best ones for a bit so I can get them just right - but here is a little taste of what mother nature presented to us.

Was so damn windy on this location the front of my lens was partially covered in snow most of the time but it was so damn worth it.

Mjelle - Bodø - Norway

It's nice to be back home. We used to go swimming at this beach during summer when I was younger. (Yes we do go swimming - even in the north of norway) Back then I never paid attention to the patterns and colours in the rocks. Been an exciting week exploring and revisiting my own back yard with a photographers eye :)
