John Carter and Michael Chabon's 17-year quest
+Charlie Jane Anders :
One major trope in stories like John Carter — and The Martian Agent — is the notion that these now-barbaric societies were once technologically advanced and powerful. I asked Chabon why he thought the trope of the former technological masterminds, reduced to barbarism, is so prevalent, and he says:

I think partly because we are haunted by that prospect ourselves. We can see evidence. As the 19th century turned into the 20th century and archeologists started to press deeper in to the jungles of Central and South America and into the deserts of Mesopotamia and India, they began to encounter clear evidence of many civilizations that had attained some level oftechn... more »

and a mass of bodies moving

going anywhere and nowhere,
people on the move.

The Just Green Doughnut

OK, that's not the official name for this framework. Let's go with the longer name:  The doughnut of social and planetary boundaries.

Here's the basic idea. There are environmental limits within which we, as a species, must live. That's the outer blue circle, and we need to stay inside its inner edge. There are also social equity metrics that we want to achieve. That's the inner blue circle, and we want to be above its outer edge. The space in between these is the just, green doughnut.

At first, I thought it was just a clever graphic. But there is some depth to this framework.

“The painter does not paint on an empty canvas, and neither does the writer write on a blank page; but the page or canvas is already so covered with preexisting, preestablished clichés that it is necessary to erase, to clean, to flatten, even to shred, so as to let in a breath of air from the chaos that brings us the vision.”

People want to share and tech can be an enabler
"While people may say it’s not about the technology, unfortunately that’s where a large share of the budget goes in social network initiatives. The bigger change to manage is getting people to work transparently. Transparency is a necessity for cooperation and collaboration in networks, as a major benefit of using social media is increasing speed of access to knowledge. However, if the information is not shared by people, itwill... more »

It is a demand for a creative intersubjective formation in which the “other” becomes a mirror (but only a mirror) for my subjectivity. This idealism suggests to us that humanity is not embedded in my person solely as an individual; my humanity is co-substantively bestowed upon the other and me. Humanity is a quality we owe to each other. We create each other and need to sustain this otherness creation. Humus, part 1: Drinking Fog

Lessons from El Tofo
Those who have followed the roller-coaster ride of fog collecting at El Tofo draw some clear lessons from the experience.

One is that fog collecting works. Proof of this can be found in the work of a new network of specialists who have taken this technology to arid areas across the globe.

The other lesson is that understanding social conditions and securing the involvement and commitment of local people — a factor apparently given short shift here because of special circumstances — is always vital to the long-term viability of a development project.

"I think the main message," says Smart, "is that the technology may be absolutely wonderful — and in this case the technology works brilliantly — but there's always a social setting, and that's going to demand asmuch atten... more »

Social Business Design: Life Beyond Email

"What would happen if we reframed the social web into being evolved by artifact strategies, beyond content strategies?"

+Luis Suarez
Hummm, great graphic, +Joachim Stroh! Lots of meat to chew on in it, for sure! If there is anything that I can share across on my 5 years of A World Without eMail movement it is that it's not really about push vs. pull but more push AND pull. It's a hybrid working together effectively based on a specific context and use case in place, which is why in most cases that gets neglected, as +Henry Singer rightly observed with our abuse of email. Well, that same abuse of email is happening as well with social networking tools where plenty of knowledge workers are starting to just use them as broadcasting mechanisms with hardly any engagement or participation inc... more »
