Technology: Collaboration vs email trees
ht: +Phill Hocking & +Paul Simbeck-Hampson
The email tree is indeed a problem that refuses to die. This video defines the problem well but falls short on the solution, imo. There are several different solutions out there, but with Google Apps for Business email trees are truly a thing of the past. Group collaboration is on the document itself, in real time. The link below shows you how in detail.

The Knowledge Cost
Knowledge has a value and a discovery cost, each to be counted and weighed. In order for the former to make sense the latter has to become 'democratized'. The social media revolution, not to mention search, has brought the discovery cost of knowledge down significantly. When knowledge is easy to discover we are partially defined by the way we use it to do something more with it. What we then become is not the result of what we know (that is now freely available to all) but how we use it to generate greater value.

The Social Era: Invest in People, not Companies!
As paradigm shifts go, social business is THE game changer that can right many of the business wrongs we've experienced in the past 30 years. Symbolically, Gordon Gekko (http://goo.gl/QlXr) may have simply laid the rotten egg (not so golden after-all) that spiraled a global economy down to its knees as a result. Social Business itself is a debated term (see +Gideon Rosenblatt excellent piece, http://goo.gl/Ue6nQ). Regardless of all the socio-political-fiscal-rhetoric when we invest in things (ie. a company) the ROI (Return On Investment) is dicey at best where only a very chosen few actually gain significant benefit. In contrast, history shows that when we invest in people, more benefit across the board. The notion of doing well by greed must be replaced with doing well by doing good. So, when will humans stop exploiting each-other and b... more »

Cost and Effect
Activity based management establishes relationships between overhead costs and activities so that overhead costs can be more precisely allocated to products, services, or customer segments. Using analysis that helps establish the value of specific activities it answers the seemingly simple question: "Is it worth it?".
To quantify the importance of the approach consider that Charles Babbage (the spiritual father of computing) looked at the mail system in place in Victorian England and wrote: "...dispatched nightly from Bristol,a mail pouch weighed less than one hundred pounds. To send these messages 120 miles, “a coach and apparatus, weighing above thirty hundred weight, are put in motion, and also conveyed over the same space." The seemingly exorbitant effort that was required in order to get a simple letter from point A to point B was dee... more »

Great evening with +Shaker Cherukuri and family!
After over a year of G+ collaboration and friendship this long awaited "hirl" finally happened at Felippi's Pizza Grotto in Little Italy, San Diego last night. Great food and conversation where I learned that Shaker and his wonderful wife and beautiful 2 children are the poster family for the meaning of the American Dream. Dinner was followed by a brisk tour of San Diego Bay, Downtown Gaslamp Quarter nightlife, then over the bridge to Coronado Island and a walk-trough the legendary Hotel Del Coronado - all done before midnight! It was a great time! Thanks Shaker for taking the time from your busy travel schedule for the swing to San Diego to make it finally happen. Cheers!!!

9 Out Of 10 Americans Are Completely Wrong About This Fact
Yes, one more short video you need to watch. This pretty much speaks for itself. At 1:05, I get a rude awakening. At 1:41, he starts talking about you. At 2:24, he says a "bad" word. At 3:50, he kind of breaks my brain. At 4:50, he lets you know how broke you really are. At 5:20, he rubs it in. And at 5:50, he points out that reality isn't close to what we think it is.
Infographics on the distribution of wealth in America, highlighting both the inequality and the difference between our perception of inequality and the actual numbers. The reality is often not what we think it is.

Perspective (from Latin perspicere, to see through) in the graphic arts, such as drawing, is an approximate representation, on a flat surface (such as paper), of an image as it is seen by the eye.
A preferential attachment process (as perspective) is any of a class of processes in which some quantity, typically some form of wealth or credit, is distributed among a number of individuals or objects according to how much they already have, so that those who are already wealthy receive more than those who are not. "Preferential attachment" is only the most recent of many names that have been given to such processes. They are also referred to under the names "Yule process", "cumulative advantage", "the rich get richer", and, less correctly, the "Matthew effect". It is related to Gibrat's law. The principal reason for scientific interest in ... more »

What are you trying to do? Articulate your objectives using absolutely
no jargon.
• How is it done today, and what are the limitations of current practice?
• What’s new in your approach and why do you think it will be successful?
• Who cares? If you’re successful, what difference will it make?
• What are the risks and the payoffs?
• How much will it cost? How long will it take?
• What are the midterm and final “exams” to check for success?

Social Era / Culture: The Rise Of The American Ignorati
#politics #culture #socialera #ignorati
“We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.” -- Benjamin Franklin. Others say, “stupidity is a condition while ignorance is a choice.” If so, in 21st Century America, there is an epidemic of the condition and a mass stampede towards the choice. There’s even a new name for for it! Ignorati - not to be confused with its Italian literal translation meaning of “ignored”, ignorati is closer to a pop culture antithetic play on on the word “illuminati”.
īgnōrātī -- “a person or group that is willfully ignorant, or woefully uninformed and forces their ignorant views on others regardless of fact, in spite of evidence.”
In general, the ignorati are described as individuals who, despite their education, power, wealth, or influence, ... more »

Technology Fix: Brain-drain & the future of business in the USA
The global competitiveness environment has changed dramatically and the US keeps falling behind. Why? One reason is that both Americans and foreign innovators can apply for patent rights under U.S. law and as a result foreign entities outpace U.S. patent submissions and awards. U.S. entities receiving patent awards fell to 49.1 percent—its lowest share in nearly 50 years. (Source - http://goo.gl/lExwX ) American inovation and manufacturing has fallen behind the rest of the world and as a result pressures on jobs, wages and living standards will only grow accordingly for some time to come. What must we do to fix this?

Anticipatory Computing
...unlike other semantic efforts that analyze usage history, their approach is to look at the past 10 minutes and then anticipate what users might need in the next 10 seconds.
“We have a predictive model that changes second to second and surfaces relevant information without searching,” says Tuttle. He calls it “anticipatory” computing, and as far as I am concerned, “predictive” is the future direction of computing.

This essay, written in 2001, is the primary basis of the singularity movement. A lot of people disagree with some of its premises... mostly about the timeline, and there's some talk about Kurzweil cherry picking his examples and ignoring counter examples.
I'm still on the fence, honestly.
but any essay with this quote, needs to be grokked.
"You will get $40 trillion just by reading this essay and understanding what it says. For complete details, see below. (It’s true that authors will do just about anything to keep your attention, but I’m serious about this statement. Until I return to a further explanation, however, do read the first sentence of this paragraph carefully.)"

Some say social is dead; others say it's just beginning. According to a soon-to-be-published McKinsey Global Institute report, The Social Economy: Unleashing Value and Productivity Through Social Technologies, the value creation potential of social technologies within and across enterprises and the consumer landscape is largely untapped—with eye-popping possible gains. Where will it have the greatest economic value -- enterprise or consumer? What is its potential for making knowledge workers more productive? What will it take to get there?

Social Business: Responsible Capitalism
Perhaps using the words responsible and capitalism in the same sentence is an oxymoron. In Europe (specially the UK) the concept is in the public debate where some feel that so called 'Responsible capitalism', a concept that does not exist as there is no capitalism, what we have is *corporate fascism.* Capitalism would have let the fraudulent banks collapse and crooked bankers sent to prison - neither have happened. Capitalism would have made borrowers face up to their debts, instead savers have their savings and pension funds raped to bailout borrowers. There is no capitalism...
