Stephan Spelde8,664My Inspirational CircleEver since I joined Google plus in the end of the year 2011 I have been looking for those special ones. Those people that inspired me...touched my soul with their work or made me laugh my pants off.It took me over 2 years to fill this circle up to 500 inspirators, but today... I finally added my last person. :)I will seek more of these in the future, don't worry, and this means I will have to share multiple circles from now on, but for now...these are the 500 most inspirational people on Google Plus for me.A great big Thank You to everybody in this circle for enriching my Google Plus experience and inspire and motivate me in becoming a better photographer.artist. #circleshare   #circlesharing   #circles  2014-01-09 22:05:0550031930CC G+
Jeremy Rasnic0Qaulity Photography Circle ShareI have several circles as I like to keep my Google Plus account pretty tidy and organized.  I was looking through my circles doing some clean up and decided to share a circle.  I have never shared a circle prior to now, but seeing how I couldn't find a compelling reason not to, you get this post in your stream :)The circle I am sharing is a a group of active individuals on g+ that I enjoy seeing in my stream for their creativity and quality photography.  They offer inspiration and challenge me to think more critically about my own photography.  The majority post daily and all of them post quality material.  If you are looking for a group of people to add to your g+ stream to liven it up, you may want to consider this one for quality photography. If you think I'm missing out on some good, quality photography, feel free to make some suggestions to me as I'm always open to it.  I have included myself in this circle- not because I think I am of the same caliber as some of these photographers, but because I do post daily and you never know,  some of my photography might surprise you :)Enjoy! #circleshare   #circlesharing   #photographycircles   #photography   #photographerstofollow    2013-09-06 02:42:3739603CC G+

Grobler du Preez38,130This circle contains all the previous #africantuesday  top 5 winners - add it if you like wildlife, nature and other photos from Africa. The only way to get yourself into this circle is to post African photos for the theme and to be selected as one of the five best photos of the week.Today is #africantuesday ! It is an open theme day. You may post any photo taken in Africa. Please keep the photos family and work viewing friendly.Important: share your photos to "public" and circle +African Tuesday  or else your photo will not be considered for one of the top 5 photos of the week (we cannot re-share it for the theme if you don’t - a Google+ requirement)To submit your photos to the theme:1. tag #AfricanTuesday "OPEN THEME"2. include the curator team ( +Morkel Erasmus , +Dick Whitlock and +Grobler du Preez ) so we can pick up on your posts easily. The top 5 contributors will be added to the AfricanTuesday Top 5 circle and one of the top 5 photos will be the banner for the +African Tuesday page for a week!2012-12-04 12:31:04821110CC G+

Adam Kumiszcza25,614Wildlife photographers v. 23Another full update. All people here were checked "manually" by me to see if they still post wildlife. Some people (+Jari Peltomäki, +Alexander Safonov and others) became inactive here, but there are also some new. Please reshare. To check if you're included here, click on View shared circle and then search for your name in a Search in this circle box.If you post wildlife photos regularly on G+, please comment here and I'll include you in the next update.2012-10-17 12:39:58500313330CC G+
Gailen Mapes16,165Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Other or Unknown Camera L-Q - 13 of 14Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. I have had to split some circles because they exceeded 500 members.I am now sharing one circle per day, for the reason see: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/posts/RrPNTzHhQuHAs before these circles are photographers that I admire. They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to October 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting September 15th.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about2012-10-13 11:01:21347534CC G+

Margaret Tompkins25,055<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Great Photographers With < 25,000 FollowersThe photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  There are NO requirements to share this circle.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.  Each profile has been verified by me.  Each has < 25,000 followers (when they were put into the circle), and most are between 10,000 and 25,000 followers.  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention. There’s a really great photographer XXX that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you! #Circleshare     #Sharedcircles  2012-07-25 23:09:23497213120211CC G+
Mike Spinak39,047PHOTOGRAPHERS TOO GOOD TO MISSI've never shared a circle, before. I don't really think about and organize my circles in a kind of way which lends itself to sharing. However, I've made this circle explicitly for sharing, just because many of these photographers are too good to miss. And sadly, a lot of them are getting missed by most.I want to be clear that this is necessarily an incomplete list. Please do not think that anyone who is not on the list is undeserving; just know that the ones who are on the list are worth considering adding to your circles. Also, there are a lot of photographers whom I've purposely left off the list because they don't need to be on it. For examples, Trey Ratcliff and Scott Kelby are so well known and easy to find that adding their names to another list is not necessary. While some of these photographers post 100% superb work, many of them have a much lower percentage. But all of them at least occasionally post stuff so good that it would be a shame to miss. Some of these are new photographers finding their bearings; others are more veteran. Some are wildlife photographers, some are wedding photographers, and some product photographers. But they all have that something special, and they all enrich my G+ experience.I hope they do for you, too.2012-07-23 02:17:0284331426CC G+
Martin Bailey37,482It's been a while since I shared my Photography circle, so here goes. This circle is the result of a year on Google+ interacting with many, many amazing photographers. It isn't a comprehensive list of the best photogs on G+, and it doesn't contain everyone that I interact with or follow. I have a few other circles for people that share good info but don't interact, and I have some lists of friends that haven't taken the time to upload enough photos to make their profile look pretty. I'll shift them over when their profiles look good. Superficial? Yes, but I like things to look pretty. This isn't a list that I'll add people to on request. If our paths cross and you share good content, I'll add you in due course. If you think you should be in here but aren't, I'm sorry. Let's stay friends and you'll be in their someday if you continue to share original and interesting photography related information. There are also a number of people that write in Japanese in here. If you don't like posts in languages you don't understand, weed those plussers out later, but they are in the list primarily because they're great photographers, so hopefully you'll keep them circled.Enjoy...2012-07-18 12:47:18438501350CC G+

They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to July 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published June 15.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. Robby Bowles28,315High Volume Wildlife Circle 3.0I try not to share circles too often but it's time to reshare my High Volume Wildlife Circle version 3! I wanted this circle to provide a high volume of wildlife flowing through the stream at all times. So there are many excellent wildlife photographers who share quite a few other types of images that I have left out to maintain the high volume of wildlife. I recommend making this its own circle even if you already have a wildlife circle. I usually go to this circle when I want to see a ton of wildlife photography. It's a bit annoying that Google+ profile cover pictures look fine in a web browser, but it gets cropped down on the iPad / iPhone. For example mine looks fine on a browser, but the head and tail are cut off on the iPad / iPhone.

I've posted to a couple of Google+ Communities for the first time. It seems that you can only post to one community at a time, unless I repeat post for each of theme, which means I get a double posting in my timeline (and maybe yours too). That doesn't seem right, unless I am missing something. Anyone?

These lion cubs were watching their mothers hunt. While families of lions are known as prides I'd advocate that a group of young ones be referred to as a crèche as it seems so appropriate. They're of the Marsh Pride and took it one morning last month while on a ten day trip in the Masai Mara.

Rhino in Charge This rhino did not like our vehicle in its presence, so what began with a little trot towards us became a charge, albeit it a bluff one, as he held up as soon as he was close. Close enough though. This was the last picture of a sequence and is full frame uncropped. Needless to say, we left him be immediately afterwards.

Cheetah cubs have a mortality rate of up to 90% and occasionally a mother may even lose all of her litter. This one is a little older now, so hopefully it won't suffer the same fate as its siblings.

Here's an example of a picture from the Nikon D800E at ISO 5600 taken on a dark rainy day (with a 400mm f/2.8 + 1.4 converter @ 1/250 and f/4.8)

This camera is continuing to surprise me, I wasn't banking on performance at such high ISO's but as you can see, it's pretty good, it's not just about the crispness of the image but for its colour retention at high ISO's as well.

I've a little bit more about this camera on my website at davidlloyd.net/2012/11/16/nikon-d800e-400-vr/

Join me to photograph the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth, the annual migration in the Masai Mara in Kenya in August 2013. We'll photograph river crossings where crocodiles lie in wait for the wildebeest to cross, elephant, leopard, lion and cheetah and if we’re lucky, black rhino.
We’ll stay in a private mobile camp, set aside especially for our group in what may well be the best location in the Masai Mara, right on one of the main river crossing points itself. Please follow the link below for details.

Wetapunga ! This month I ticked a box and visited and photographed the wetapunga, or giant weta, in New Zealand. The wetapunga is said to be the heaviest insect in the world and can weigh anything up to 50 grams. It is the largest of the 11 species of giant weta, and of all the 100 plus species of weta endemic to New Zealand. This is my little memento.

A Leopard Cub While photographing an older male leopard in Kenya, this seven month old cub surprised us all by bundling out of the bushes having been called by the elder one, its brother as it happens, who was baby sitting while mother was out hunting. We were fortunate, cubs are seen infrequently, and I don't think there are too many things that are cuter than leopard cubs.

Wildebeest Crossing Last August we witnessed a few wildebeest river crossings from near our camp in the Masai Mara. This one added a few elements like the maribu storks (with vultures if you look closely) and the morning mist. By mist I mean dust mostly, but it was 6:30am in the morning so there was still a little dampness around. It was dark too, and I had to use an ISO setting of 6400. I wouldn't have dared tried settings like that a few years ago. (BTW, I made this a 1200px wide image, so it's worth a click on.)

A mother and calf, Masai Mara, Kenya, 2011. It was difficult to get a good clear sighting of her calf. This protective mother never let her little calf venture towards us, and eventually she shooed her away from us.

Dead Acacias Here's one more for +African Tuesday, a Dead Vlei picture I took some three years ago in Sossusvlei, Namibia. I saw it as a challenge to make a black and white one after seeing so many (good) colour ones of the same place. I think it appears almost apocalyptic this way.

Grooming Lions There were two young lions grooming each other within a pride of about twelve, then a far-off one noticed, wandered over, and put her own head right between those of these two. And those two duly obliged and carried on grooming the new arrival. All I really wanted now was this one to look right at me, and for the split second that she did, I took their picture.

Sossusvlei Dune I guess I saw this as a challenge to make a black and white of a traditionally very colourful subject. Sossuslvlei, Namibia.

I note that it's Threatened Thursday today, so here's something that not everyone realises is threatened, the African Lion. Sadly we usually only realise that animals are endangered when it is almost too late. There were once 200,000 lions in the 1960s, and now there are only 20,000 today. It's the result of loss of habitat, conflict with human and livestock populations and the very preventable one of trophy hunting.

But with 20,000, hopefully it won't be too late, and organisations such as LionAid are making the public and our governments aware. So if you've a minute, do visit www.lionaid.org and see what they are doing to help.

Announcement: The Black & White Circle

Come Monday, I'll share my validated and revised Black & White Circle (BWC) with excellent photographers that produce great monochrome images. You don't want to miss that one.

If YOU want to hop on the B&W train, do the following:

1. Help spread the word and reshare this post. Why? If you think you should be promoted, you should be willing to do the same for your fellow photographers.

2. Ask for inclusion in the comments.

3. Make sure that you share your own original B&W photography in your feed. If there are too many reshares of other peoples' work, irrelevant YouTube clips, animated GIFS, blog post teasers etc., I might not add you to the circle. The BWC is a validated quality circle that should bring people... more »

Nkuringo was an old silverback of a mountain gorilla group we visited in 2008, the Nkuringo Group at South Bwindi in Uganda. There were 16 in the group then, but the leadership belonged to another younger silverback called Safari.

Nkuringo was the last of the group we spent time with, of some fifteen minutes, and was stripping the vines of leaves, not much bothered by his visitors. He was very old and seemed to have an injury to his mouth which we later learned had obtained in a fight two years earlier, leaving him slightly paralysed and making it difficult to eat. If anyone still thinks that gorillas have the persona of a 1933 style King Kong, then they’d soon be persuaded otherwise by this guy.

Sadly, Nkuringo died of natural causes in April 2008 aged forty-nine, just six weeks after our visit.

There's another picture of him atd... more »

A Zebra Pair, from last August in the Masai Mara. They often pose this way, for protection mainly. The sky was clear and the background was free of interruption, so this one was hard to resist.

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity"
(Seneca, Roman philosopher, 4 BC – 65 AD).

For what it's worth I've a couple of favourite quotes and this is one of them, and it's quite relevant to photography too. Does anyone else have favourites which are just as relevant as well?
