Always in our Hearts....
It is with great sadness that I report that passing of Yellowstone's Bull Elk #10 today. Some of my fondest early memories of Yellowstone were watching Bull Elk #10 and #6 spar near Mammoth Hot Springs. From what I've read, the splendid old gentleman was between 16-18 years old when he passed. Although he was no longer battling with other bulls, I often l saw him relaxing in the shade of the aspens above Mammoth or grazing near Wraith Falls. Even though he is no longer with us, his spirit will always be alive in Yellowstone, and I know one day we will meet again over the rainbow bridge.

"Circle of Life"
On Sunday morning, our friends found an elk carcass nestled in the Newton Creek Picnic Area along the North Fork. My husband, Steve and I, didn't see it when we passed the area an hour prior to sunrise. We were intent on doing some tracking in the fresh snow and were on a mission to arrive at a spot further to the west before dawn. After we found our tracks, we headed towards Newton Creek, and ran into our friends Amy and Elaine who had spotted the carcass in the picnic area. They also spotted some fresh grizzly tracks in the snow. The grizzly had recently been at the carcass, crossed the road and headed into Newton Creek Campground. None of us saw the bear, but I'm almost certain he was waving to Steve and I as we drove by in the dark earlier that morning.
With a carcass around, what's a wildlife photographer to do but wait to see what appears? A... more »

"Winter's Last Stand"
Like most of NW Wyoming, we had quite a blast of winter weather yesterday with up to 5 inches of fresh snow near Pahaska. Steve and I went out before dawn this morning with hopes of finding some animal tracks (and hopefully the animals who made them). Only a few miles from the house, we noticed the tracks of a lone wolf following the road for more than 6 miles. The tracks were frozen in the icy snow so the wolf had passed through the area during the evening before everything had frozen solid.
We didn't see any moose today, but saw hundreds of elk during our drive. With the fresh snow, the large elk herds have come down from the mountains to graze along the roadside where the snow is much less. As we approached Eagle Creek Campground, we saw this large bison making his way towards Yellowstone. I find bison to be extremely majestic animals and am... more »

Expect 15 minute delays inbound on 495 to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel due to an overturned tractor trailer. Well, not exactly. Traffic jams are a little different in Wyoming.

"The New Generation"
Early in the morning of April 27th, we ran into three junior members of the Canyon Pack. We got a fleeting glimpse of the three wolves as they were running across Swan Flats towards Quadrant Peak. We didn't expect to see the wolves again, but a little over an hour later, they popped up across from Grizzly Lake Trailhead.
We watched as the three wolves (including 831F, the mangy yearling that people have been calling "No Pants", and a larger gray) frantically dug around a log buried in the snow. We couldn't tell what they were digging for, but in the past there has been a weasel den in this area, so that would be my best guess as to what they found so interesting. After about 15 minutes, the trio gave up and continued their journey towards Norris.
In this photo, 831F runs through the snow in pursuit of her siblings. She looks a... more »

The Lower Falls, as seen from Artist Point, tumbles over 300 feet into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This view was made famous in a painting by Thomas Moran as seen during his travels through the area as part of the Hayden Expedition in the late 1800s.

"His Majesty"
We went to Yellowstone yesterday with hopes of seeing the grizzly sow, Blaze and her cub, but early in the morning we were treated to a sighting of this beautiful boar known as "Snaggletooth" near Mud Volcano. We hadn't seen Snaggletooth since last year and had heard he was frequenting his favorite haunt. Since we couldn't find Blaze when we arrived, we decided to take a drive towards Mud Volcano to look for Snaggletooth and surprisingly, there he was. We were lucky enough to spend over an hour with this magnificent bear until he retreated away from the road.

A Girl in the Sunset
A friend of mine and I visited Daiba Park, Tokyo a couple of weeks ago. We were waiting for the sunset there, when the rain clouds covered the sky. We gave up the idea of shooting the sunset from the park, and started walking toward the shopping area where we thought we would wait until the sky cleared up. But we were caught in the rain on the way. We had to take shelter under the eaves of the public facilities on the beach ... It was not the perfect place to hide. But we soon realized we were at the perfect spot, because we were able to see the sun setting right behind the Rainbow Bridge. It was a breathtaking view.

Composing with Curves
Curves make an image easy to look at by leading the viewer’s eye through the frame. It is almost as if the photographer takes the viewer by the hand, draws them into the landscape, and points the way. The viewer’s eyes are compelled to follow the line.
C curves, or semi-circles, are probably the easiest curves to find since almost any curve qualifies. It can be anything from the gentle curve of a seashore, lakeshore, a rounded rock, or grasses blowing in the wind.
While visiting a plantation I was immediately drawn to these live oak trees with branches that curve over the entire lawn forming a canopy overhead.

Artist Drive, Death Valley National Park
Hazy days made for difficult photography at Death Valley National Park when I first arrived. The air was dense and the clouds and haze obscured most of the grand views.
The haze tended to lift around sunset and I got a few good shots at Devils Golf Course and Badwater Basin, but the days were pretty much a write off except for scouting locations.
On the fourth day I was in luck! The haze finally lifted and there was just enough cloud in the sky to make a photographer happy.
Sometimes waiting for the right light can take days!
I used this opportunity to photograph some of the vivid colours along Artist Drive, a scenic one way loop road with many sharp curves and deep dips.
This image comes from my favourite section of Artist Drive known as Artist’s Palette.
I have many more photos from A... more »

Little Finland, Nevada
During my stay in Moapa, Nevada, I was doing some research on the local area when I came across a map to a spot known as “Little Finland.”
My friend, Don Davis, whose RV park we were staying at, said he had heard of it but had never been there himself. It was a great adventure just waiting for us!
It took an hour to drive to the beginning of the un-maintained road and then the map showed another 15 miles to get to Little Finland. We figured we would arrive an hour before sunset.
It’s a good thing we were in Don’s four wheel drive truck or we never would have made it to the end of that bumpy road at all! It took us well over an hour to travel those 15 miles and by the time we got there we had missed sunset all together, but at least we found a cool spot to bookmark for a future trip.
After a bit of exploring to find my way up on t... more »

The Overlook
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Ahhh... The Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Viewpoint... A name filled with majesty and beauty... All kidding aside, this unassuming name belongs to one of the most spectacular overlooks I've ever seen. If you're in the area, you must check it out. On this particular day, the weather was extremely unstable with rain showers and roiling storm clouds being replaced by bright sunshine from minute to minute. I had the good fortune of ruining my knee hiking the day before, or I would have missed this scene altogether. (I would have been hiking in the woods instead!)

Misty Metlako Falls
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Recently hiked up the Eagle Creek Trail in the Columbia River Gorge on a particularly rainy Spring weekday. The usually-packed parking lot had 3 other cars in it and I never saw a soul on the whole hike... definitely the best way to enjoy this trail. On the way to Punchbowl Falls, I took the little side trip to the Metlako Falls overlook and spent some quality time under my umbrella--just me, my camera, and this magical view--listening to the pitter patter of rain in the forest and waiting for some nice mist to drift over the falls

*Aero L-39 Albatros*
The *Aero L-39 Albatros* is a high-performance jet trainer aircraft developed in Czechoslovakia.
A single turbofan engine, an Ivchenko AI-25TL (made in the Soviet Union) is embedded in the fuselage and is fed through shoulder-mounted, semi-circular air intakes (fitted with splitter plates) just behind the cockpit; the engine exhausts below the tailplane. Five rubber bag fuel tanks are located in the fuselage behind the cockpit. The main, trailing-arm landing gear legs retract inward into wing bays; the nose gear retracts forward.
A long, pointed nose made of aluminum leads back to the tandem cockpit, in which the student and instructor sit under individual canopies that are hinged on the right. The rear (instructor's) seat is raised slightly; both ejection seats are made by Aero.
The basic trainer is not armed, but has two underw... more »
