Lovely Sky Monsters - 22 phenomenal photos - http://theatln.tc/NhfDh6 - Award-winning photographer Camille Seaman, best known for her earlier work depicting massive polar icebergs, recently turned her lens on another incredible natural phenomenon - storm clouds above the American Midwest. She partnered with experienced storm chasers and began to stalk a particular type of storm cloud - the supercell. On June 22, 2012, in western Nebraska, she encountered an enormous supercell and captured its many faces. With her permission, I've gathered here several images of that storm and a few other amazing storm shots from an earlier expedition she took in 2008.

Some improvements to Google+ Profiles and Pages

I’m excited to let you know about a few tweaks we’ve made based on the feedback we’ve received from you. Starting today, we’re adding a sharebox to your personal and/or business profile, and we’re making cover photos easier to manage. These improvements are rolling out globally over the next few hours; in the meantime, you can find descriptions and screenshots below.

Sharing from your profile. You’ve been asking for it, and today we’re launching it: the ability to post directly from your profile. Just look for the familiar sharebox when you’re visiting your own profile, and share what’s new with your circles. And don’t worry, only you -- the profile or page owner -- will see this new sharebox.

Seeing the bigger picture.  Your cover photo is one of the first things people see when theycome to your Google+ ... more »

Milky Way is Destined for Head-on Collision with Andromeda Galaxy

NASA astronomers announced Thursday they can now predict with certainty the next major cosmic event to affect our Galaxy, +Sun, and +Solar System: the titanic collision of our +Milky Way Galaxy with the neighboring +Andromeda Galaxy.

The Milky Way is destined to get a major makeover during the encounter, which is predicted to happen four billion years from now. It is likely the Sun will be flung into a new region of our Galaxy, but our Earth and Solar System are in no danger of being destroyed.

"Our findings are statistically consistent with a head-on collision between the Andromeda Galaxy and our Milky Way Galaxy," said Roeland van der Marel of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore.

The solution came through painstaking NASA... more »

Sculptures that ‘steam’ the ‘punk’ out of creepy creatures!

Gosh, it’s giving me the creeps” this is what most of us would exclaim upon coming across a gut-churning insect with its awkward movements, nauseating form and uncertainty of action.

As if insects weren't enough to give you the heebie-jeebies, this time Steampunk artists will be your source for “creeps.” There will be no more “squishing” as these artists have devised their metal born insect replicas with gears, nuts and springs, enough to put you in gear, make you go nuts and spring with consternation. Entomophobes behold!

Arachnids in Steampunk presented below may very well be the cutest creeps you must have seen so far.

How Our Brains Set the World Spinning - Snakes in the mind

If there’s ever excuse to publish an optical illusion as cool as the “Rotating Snakes,” I’ll take it. This illusion was invented in 2003 by Akiyoshi Kitaoka of Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and ever since, Kitaoka and other scientists have been trying to figure out why it works. A new paper by Stephen Macknik at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix may have the answer.

As you’ll notice, the circles seem to rotate in response to where you look at the illusion. So Macknik and his colleagues tracked the movement of people’s eyes as they gazed at two of these wheels on a computer screen. Their subjects kept a finger pressed on a button, lifting it whenever they seemed to see the wheels move.

Macnick and his colleagues found a tight correlation between the onset of the illusion and a kind ofinvoluntary... more »

Ridiculously Imaginative Playgrounds by Monstrum - all kids would love playing in these!

Danish firm Monstrum, founded by Ole B. Nielsen and Christian Jensen, are responsible for some of the most brilliant playscapes I’ve ever seen. From life-size blue whales, giant serpents, and wobbly castles, any one of these would have been my dream come true as a child.

This computer-simulated image released by NASA shows gas from a shredded star falling into a black hole. In a first, scientists identified the star that fell victim to this gravitational monster. Black holes only rip apart stars about once every 10,000 years per galaxy, and the death of the identified star may give more clues into the inner workings of the supermassive object that devoured it. :: Concept Art
Kino Scialabba

Kino Scialabba has done what so many only consider. They grew tired of working invisibly for others who reaped the rewards of their labor so formed Legion Entertainment, a company now in its fifth year.

Scialabba and business partner Bruce Jurgens were both in production when they met at Cinesite Hollywood.
Scialabba was building content and Jurgens worked as a VFX and CG Supervisor. By setting up under the banner of Legion, Scialabba now holds the title of executive and partner, managing director and CCO (Chief Creative Officer) and Jurgens mainly acts as a producer.
Scialabba is currently hired through Legion by Hydraulx, where Scialabba has worked as a concept artist and senior matte painter of films such as 2012, Book of Eli, Avatar, Gulliver’s Travels, and most recently Skyline.

Sifting through Dust near Orion's Belt
A new image of the region surrounding the reflection nebula Messier 78, just to the north of Orion’s Belt, shows clouds of cosmic dust threaded through the nebula like a string of pearls. The observations, made with the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope[1], use the heat glow of interstellar dust grains to show astronomers where new stars are being formed.

Dust may sound boring and uninteresting — the surface grime that hides the beauty of an object. But this new image of Messier 78 and surroundings, which reveals the submillimetre-wavelength radiation from dust grains in space, shows that dust can be dazzling. Dust is important to astronomers as dense clouds of gas and dust are the birthplaces of new stars.

In the centre of the image is Messier 78, also known as NGC 2068. When seen in visible light, this region isa r... more »

The World's first “groundscraper” - underground luxury hotel in China

"Construction began last month on Shanghai’s first “groundscraper”—a structure built almost completely below the surface. The massive project will eventually take form as the InterContinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland, a 19-story, 380-room luxury hotel surrounded by a 428,000 square-meter theme park."

This sounds so interesting....

Abstract Paintings by Paolo Spertino

Artist statement :
"I'm an italian abstract painter. The ART in my life is one important component. For me painting is as easy as breathing, it is difficult to give a name to my work, The difficulty is to frame their art in a specific context. From the moment you decide on a title crystallizes the work within a defined frame of mind, its exclusion of any other possible representation.

The viewer is free to look at the canvas with his own eyes and draw from it emotionally rich infinite nuances of a silent harmony with the work itself, to clothe her home with a source of joy and beauty subjective."

Today's LEGO post could be mistaken for a real room that you can walk into. Using a technique known as tilt-shift photography, Brazil-based photographer Valentino Fialdini's latest exhibition shows Mini Architectural Spaces made out of LEGOs. By playing with light streaming through the windows and the shadows that result, he's made rooms that seem much more expansive than they really are. Ah, have a chance to walk through corridors made entirely of LEGO, a man can dream ;)
