Shear(ed) rock drop
Welcome, my friends, and look upon this ancient rock that the earth took eons to deposit, and you can look at a section of this history, where layer upon layer is visible. But don't stand up here and gaze upon that rock if you're afraid of heights because you're high above on a cliff edge, with angry rocks and crazy water waiting eagerly far below.
A look at the cliffs made of solid Sydney Basin Hawkesbury Sandstone in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney.

I spect I grow'd. Don't think nobody never made me
This Tussock Moth caterpillar (Orvasca semifusca) reminds me of Topsy from Uncle Tom's Cabin, at least from the illustrations in the book I had as a child, with the tufts of hair sticking out on either side! ;). Now that's a fuzzy-wuzzy if there ever was one!

Right up there? You must be joking!
Near the starting point of yesterday's bushwalk in the Royal National Park (south of Sydney), we could see the power of the sea. It was a windy day and the sea was rough, with waves pounding the beach and the base of the tall cliffs. Our climb up the sandstone cliff you see in the middle took us to the track that we followed, one that skirts the edge of the cliffs, with spectacular views, and several streams/creeks that raced to the edge and plunged to the sharp rocks and raging surf far below. At times, the sea was hitting the cliffs with such ferocity that we were showered with salt spray even though we were on top of the cliffs.

Just give me a sign
This is Eagle Rock in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney. It is an icon of the national park. The rock and the weathered massive sandstone cliffs that it is part of were some of the wonderful things we encountered on a strenuous bushwalk today. It is quite a hike to get to the cliff tops from the level of the beach far below but it was all worth it for all the sights (and exercise).

There's still life in an old friend
There was a tree right in the middle of a quiet portion of Middle Harbour Creek (in Garigal National Park in the north of Sydney) and I used to go to it for many years while stepping across the creek. There were many photographs I'd taken from, and of, the tree over the period. Recently, I noticed the tree was missing. On searching, I found it a short distance downstream, now dead but still sustaining life. There were a number of fungi (that look like Oyster mushrooms) growing on it (and ants on the mushrooms), and from the look of the wood, borers in it as well. Perhaps the borers weakened the tree and it got swept away. Still, I'm happy this old friend still lives, in other forms...
Tried a different thing. This is a two frame focus stack, but not a macro - it's taken with a telephoto lens.

Head of the hammer
Barrenjoey Head is the northernmost tip of the Northern Beaches in Sydney. Viewed from the air, the Head has a hammerhead shape, with the Palm Beach strip and lower being the shaft. Photographed from West Head, this shows the Barrenjoey Lighthouse at the top, with the Tasman Sea in the background.

Caught red-handed
Red Hands Cave in the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park (in the north of Sydney) is a shallow sandstone cave that contains ancient Aboriginal cave art. Estimated to be about 2,000 years old, this art would have been made by the Garigal clan of the Aboriginal people of the Guringai Nation (the national park is named after them), who lived around the West Head area. This photograph shows one of the hand impressions made by blowing red ochre over a hand placed on the sandstone. Considering the cave is relatively exposed, it is remarkable this cave art has survived this long even though it has become somewhat indistinct over time. Protected now, this site and other nearby Aboriginal heritage sites are important to the local Aboriginal people.

Go straight and you'll hit New Zealand
A 12 frame panorama showing the magnificent view from West Head in the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park in Sydney. In the middle on the left you can see Lion Island, which is just outside the mouth of the Hawkesbury River, behind the lion's tail is Broken Bay and the NSW Central Coast. In the middle on the right is Barrenjoey Head and Palm Beach, and sticking out into the Tasman Sea in the middle is Hawke Head and the Bouddi National Park.

The Lion lies
West Head in the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park (Sydney) has superb views from its heights. Here you see Lion Island (see the lion lying down?) at middle right, the Hawkesbury River joining the sea left and the Pittwater to the right. You can see the NSW Central Coast in the distance at the centre.
