I can only say- yes, I have had an account closed, with the written reason being that US Citizens would no longer be wanted as customers, because the FATCA compliance was too expensive.
I still have the letter.

Bad news, we've lost the first round of votes on the proposals to weaken privacy protections online. The consumer (IMCO) committee of the European Parliament cast its opinion vote this morning on “data protection regulation” and our privacy.

What we could lose

In close votes, Members of the IMCO committee chose to water down the protection of citizens' privacy, by, among others, allowing easier profiling of users by companies, or softening obligations of notification of personal data breaches. Most attempts to impose safeguards against the processing, storing and selling of our personal data, were rejected.

PSA - I usually say something earlier, but better late than never. Please ask your single friends if they have/want plans for Christmas, especially if they don't have family nearby. While some people don't mind being alone, quite often people do. One extra place setting isn't a big deal at a dinner, but it can be a very big deal to someone who would otherwise be lonely.

If your family are weird about inviting extra guests (boo!) then please consider inviting them for brunch, or breakfast, or a late supper.

I am gathering the courage to host a public hangout over Christmas - so that even if your special meal is packet mac & cheese, there will be someone to make small talk with (maybe we'll discuss bad Christmas carols). ♥

Yup, that's true. It's been what I've been curious about lately and have gone to quite some extents to do my research, including having some very patient friends sit in front of the mirror while I do my little research and observations. Turns out what the mirror shows you is a general image of what you look like, more like all these reflections are only representations, more or less distorted by the optical quality of the filters that reflect your picture and an image you try to accept as yourself as your mind plays tricks with you. The reflections are not accurate.(yeah, I've made measurements using different mirrors and people).
I've discovered another thing- the inverted image you see does play a major role of how you perceive yourself-

Wonderful, sympathetic pictures. On a slightly cynical note, this certainly places Obama in a very human and sympathetic light.
But admittedly, I see him as a sympathetic , empathatic human. So, spare me comments about how this is a slanted view, enjoy if you wish to, ignore otherwise.

Thomas E. Ricks is the guy who recently shafted the Fox TV for being a propaganda outlet of the GOP. Pretty smart, informed and competent. His theory is that the later tradition of not firing the failed generals is the reason for the failure of the US military after the WW-2. Basically he is saying that the military top brass have become like a self serving mob.

A new way to explore books

How do you find good books? How about with help of a clustering algorithm that clusters similar books? Try it... it's an excellent way to explore.

To make it really obvious why: Put in something technical, like 'Cloud computing'. You'll see all the Dummies books clustered into one group, all the legal books in another group, all the programming books in another cluster, and so on - making it easy to navigate and get an overview of the mainstream literature available in a particular niche.

The same thing works, of course, for fiction: put in something like 'Mirrorland' and you'll see respective niche clusters form around similar books.
