An incredibly tiny Red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus) spotted during the weekend!

Less than 5cm in total length and about 2mm wide … a very small and absolutely wonderful find!

What strange creature lurks beneath the calm waters of the streams and swamps in southern Ontario, Canada? The Eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens) - the only species of newt in this area :)

These newts actually contain toxins in their skin that are lethal to most predators.

Here are few quick tips to help you conserve amphibian and reptile populations in your own backyard.

Red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) are not eager to face Monday's either!

This one thought it was safely tucked away from view yesterday half under a log ... but a bright red stripe on a blue tail isn't necessarily the best camouflage against brown branches and leaves :D

One of the best finds to make out in the field: amphibian spawn! Will definitely be checking back there shortly to see how the little guys are developing!

PS Pardon the poor quality photo ... I wasn't about to stumble through the water to grab this shot and risk stepping on anything swimming around in there. I happened to spot this clump out in the water while standing on the trail.

Today's Dose of AWESOME!

With words like Demonic + Poison in its name, you will not see anything more AWESOME than this today :D

Amazing Amphibian #8: The Demonic Poison Frog (or Yapacana’s Little Red Frog), Minyobates steyermarki, is listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its range in humid montane forest habitats on the Cerro Yapacana in southern Venezuela is probably less than 10km². This small species, like other Poison Dart Frogs, is known for being highly toxic, a feature they obtain through their diet.

Check our new Amazing Amphibian for this week: Gymnopis multiplicata It is not a worm or a snake - this is definitely an amphibian and you won't believe what the young do! These amphibians take "amazing" to the extreme!

Gymnopis multiplicata is known for the live birth of their young, which hatch inside their mother. After the young have used up their yolk sacs, they continue to feed by scraping their small teeth along the insides of their mother until they are born. The oviducts, where the babies are developing and feeding, quickly produce more layers of tissue, and the babies’ feeding does not appear to hurt their mother

And if you are not sure what field herping is this short video will introduce you to it ... and hopefully inspire you to try it out. Brace yourself though: it's addicting!

Nothing better to start the week off with than an Amazing Amphibian ... actually, make that LOTS of Amazing Amphibians! Check out the eggs!

Hyalinobatrachium ibama, a species of Glass Frog, is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This delicate-looking frog is found only in old-growth forests, humid montane forests, and near mountain streams of Colombia. The distribution of this species is now severely fragmented. As their name implies, this Glass Frog and other species of its family (Centrolenidae) are known for their transparent skin through which you can see their internal organs.

Happy #FrogFriday  Everyone!

Green Frog (Lithobates clamitans)

Green frogs continue to thrive throughout much of Ontario. This does not mean that they are not susceptible to habitat loss, pollution, road mortality or predation, but rather that they have, for the most part, survived these threats at the levels at which they have occurred to date.

Common European Toad (Bufo bufo)

The movement of these toads typically starts in February but peaks throughout March and April, which unfortunately means there is often a coinciding peak in road fatalities for these amphibians.

Amphibians are starting to emerge in many parts of the northern hemisphere as the weather warms up and the snow melts. Please watch for them on roads in your neighbourhood!

These are guidelines for managing habitats with the goals of keeping common species common, stemming the decline of imperiled species, and reducing the likelihood of species becoming listed as threatened or endangered.

If many landowners and land managers each implement some of these guidelines, then the cumulative effect can only be a positive one!

Wanted: Your Amphibian Conservation Success Stories

For those that may not know this already, the ASG publishes a quarterly newsletter called FrogLog. It is a resource that we have been developing to help keep both ASG members and the wider community at large up to date on the latest amphibian research and conservation news.

You can read the latest edition of FrogLog here: http://www.amphibians.org/froglog/archive/

This year, we would like for each edition of FrogLog to highlight some of the amphibian conservation success stories within these regions. Have you written a paper or report describing the effects of a management intervention to conserve amphibians? Have you tried a novel technique for the conservation of an amphibian species? It could be anything from protecting, restoring or creating habitat to captive breeding and releases, as well as thei... more »

Green Frogs (Lithobates clamitans) tend to be rather "hoppy" ... to say the least and no pun intended! Usually they hop away long before you can get close enough to grab a half decent photo :P

But one day this past summer ... woohoo! We need not discuss the position I had to get in to take this photo (it left me bruised, with a horrifying nettle rash and a spider bite) but I think it was worth the pain :)

The Galapagos land iguana (Conolophus subcristatus)

The classifications of "threatened" and "endangered" are vital to the survival of rare and imperiled species. We are working on the front lines in the field to help determine which species warrant these and other designations, and what we can do to bring their numbers back up so that they can someday be delisted.

Long Point Provincial Park is home to 19 species of turtles and snakes, of which 12 are listed as being Species at Risk. These reptiles frequently cross the road or bask on it for warmth within the park. Unfortunately, this puts them in danger and many were being killed.

The Long Point Basin Land Trust and Long Point Provincial Park worked together to make the park safer for these animals.
