That moment right before the fight starts is pretty easy to spot. Of course with siblings like these two cubs on the Russian River in AK, it's also extremely common....

Stick and Fly Version II
I know that I put up this image before, but I want to say that this one is version II, for it's remake. This image (The first Version) has won many awards, both on many social networks, but also other awards in many magazines and galleries.I just thought to put this out, edited a little different than the first one. Hope you like.

It's your watch right? Most of you know the story of these Mountain Goats. Buck and I settled in to watch and photograph them until they left, only instead of leaving they came up and settled in for naps just a matter of yards below us. The trust was one of those special moments that don't come along every day. We stood watch and took a few shots too.

Hard Landing
Well I left the house yesterday morning on Mothers Day, down to Chickamauga Lake to see what images I could get and was meet at the shore with 16 great blue herons. Not concerned with me or with what I was doing. I also was trying out my new Canon 1DX and my 2X converter to see what images I was going to get with the combination before I go on my trip to Alaska on June 1st. Here are the results.

Hello Everyone,
You may have noticed that I deleted all of my images on facebook. I did this regretfully because Europe has passed a new law on Orphaned works. In a nutshell, Any image that is found on the internet without metadata stating the images owner and copywrite or watermarked so that the owner can easily be identified and contacted are now considered orphaned works and thereby free to be used by anyone in any way they wish, including commercially.
Facebook as well as some other social media sites automatically strip your metadata from images (presumably so the images are smaller) however, this leaves them free for the taking unless strongly watermarked. Read more here.

The Mullet Hair Bear
How I got this image was a little bit hairy. I had to position my self under this home made wooden bridge that was the width of Bird creek and had to get in the creek so that this bear could not see me. Here I was about 20 yards down the creek, shivering to death from being in the creek, and knowing all along that I was close enough to the bear that if he seen me and wanted to come after me …. I was a goner. But as it turned out he never seen me and I got some great shots of him.

Golden Morning at the Bend
© Jeff R. Clow
I just returned from Jackson Hole after spending several fun days photographing the fall colors with a dozen new friends. The area was full of warm, golden color.
The severe drought of this year has left Oxbow Bend much more shallow than I've ever seen it in the many years I have been visiting the area....

Portrait of a Moose
© Jeff R. Clow
A friend of mine let me borrow his Nikkor 500mm lens during a recent visit to Grand Teton National Park.... and I was able to get this "up close and personal" portrait of this cow moose which we spotted along the Gros Ventre River Road. She was so close that I had a hard time getting her within the frame of the shot.

Emergency personnel run for a cause in downtown San Antonio
The wife and I was in San Antonio this weekend for our company's annual Board meeting conference at the Hyatt Regency and we woke up and went out side to enjoy the Emergency personnel race for chance to go to New York memorial 9/11 run.In full gear, police and firefighters from all across the area took to the streets Sunday morning. It wasn't for a call, but rather for a cause. The race started and ended in front of the Alamo. (more pictures to come).

Hmmmm Good
Most bears when eating salmon, will only eat the brains, skin, and the salmon eggs, because that is where most of the protein is ……. But this bear never waisted one single ounce of any salmon she caught, and in fact, I'm not sure how she gained all that weight with as slow as she eat every bit of that salmon. She must be doing something right though.

Yesterday I was back in Vlissingen to finish an assignment with the help of Vlissingen Rescue Squad. Their supervisor Albert also invited me to witness and photograph the release of two common seals by the seal rehabilitation and research center Lenie 't Hart from Pieterburen. What a day it was! It's not only fantastic to see fat, healthy seals being released back into the wild by their adopters, but I was also struck by the enthusiasm and passion of everybody involved. And that included the public on the beach who also had a unique opportunity to see the release. The educational effect of such an event should not be underestimated. We got a lot of questions involving the release and the seals from the general public and everybody was genuinely interested. It was good to see that despite everything, the wellbeing of the seals always came first. I have a deep respect for the men and women who devote... more »

Lower Elaka Falls, Blackwater Falls, WV
#PhotographyWorkflow , #howtophotograph, #landscapephotography
Here is one of three waterfalls on Shay's Run in Black Water Falls State Park. I love photographing this region of WV as it provide a varied terrain that includes waterfalls, overlooks, mountains and valleys.
How was this image created?
This image was a challenge to compose...I wanted to avoid the murky brown water as much as possible and maximize the lush spring greens. It was a overcast and rainy day and we had to cross Shay's run to get over on the far side to take this shot. Even with an overcast day the water was overexposed. I processed a single RAW file twice and then blended it using our iHDR workflow to get the final results.

Professor Valley, Utah
© Jeff R. Clow
Most people would swear this was taken in Monument Valley .... but they'd be wrong. This is at mile marker 18 on Route 128 east out of Moab, Utah. This area is known by two names. Castle Valley and Professor Valley. And these soaring monoliths certainly did look like Castles.
We traveled to Monument Valley later in the week ... and I found that I preferred Professor Valley significantly over its more well known cousin to the south. Less people, less evidence of civilization.....and more of that true "feel" of the old west.

Well friends - a quick personal request. My neice - Emily Clow - is in the running to be featured on a Dallas area magazine cover.....and the voting is over today.
If you could click on the link below and vote for Emily Clow - no registration necessary - I would be very grateful. She's a great high school student and captain of her varsity team, and I know it would thrill her to make a magazine cover.
Many thanks in advance.

Timeless Monument Valley
© Jeff R. Clow
Although I took this photo last week in color.....I decided that the black and white conversion was a better option.
Since I was a youngster, I've watched a lot of John Ford films made in Monument Valley. As I saw this young pony alone in the field, I felt my blood stir and the scene took me back to my youth as if I was in a time machine.
As is so often the case - I went looking for a shot ... and I found something far more fulfilling.

Rufous Female
Hummingbirds spend about 10 – 15% of their time eating, and the rest of their time conserving their energy until the next feeding. They will break their eating down into several meals throughout the day, where they consume enough calories to allow them to rest for a period before going out to find the next meal. When photographing them, I set up in an area of the garden where the light is good and the flowers are blooming well, then wait until the action starts!

Magical Fishing Hole
This brown bear was Fishing in this Magical Fishing Hole that is above the Lower Russian River Falls. This place is covered all the way around with thick brush and can be passed by if you don't know where it's at. There is only one way in and the same way out, plus that is the only entrance that you can photograph any bears that might be in there. No need for flash, for there is enough sunshine that flows in the afternoon hours from above, but beware of what the bears are doing in there because if they decide to leave, you must use the exit before they do.

2012 Perseid Meteor Shower
Last night I went out to Snowy Range in Wyoming in search of dark skies for the Perseid meteor shower. I wanted something special for the foreground and I knew the Snowies faced in the perfect direction to get this shot. I started shooting at 10pm and didn't stop until 5 am, I had to change my battery every 2 hours which made for a long night. The moon rose around 1am to light up the mountain range.
This is a composite of 23 images, 22 for the meteors/stars and 1 taken at sunrise for the foreground which was lightly blended in. I also corrected the orientation of the meteors to account for the rotation of the earth (this took forever!) Thanks to +Gary Randall for this idea!
I had a great night which was made even better because I spent it with my newly adopted dog Emmie, she was a trooper!

It's All Over But The Eating…….
This is a black bear that I was photographing in Valdez Alaska, but the thing about this bear was what he was doing with the fish…. This black bears was stacking all the fish he was catching and to top it off this blackie was very good at catching these fish…..he caught about 10 fish in about 20 minutes and after he caught and stacked them up, he started to eat them all …. I have never seen that in a bear in all my years of studying and photographing bears. I tried taking a image of all the fish that he stacked in the brush to show everyone,… but when I tried, the blackie was not having any of that.
