Enhancements to the Hangouts API

Since the launch of Google+ Hangouts API last year, we have seen many developers bring the value of real-time communications to their apps. Today, we are announcing a few more enhancements that allow us innovate faster and enable you to build great apps. 

Let’s take a look at what’s new:
New Release Process
We are adopting a Chrome-like channel system for our platform releases.  We’ll have two channels:

Stable Channel: a single Javascript include gives you the latest and greatest APIs as they are finalized.  We will do smaller, more frequent releases in a backwards-compatible manner.

Developer Channel: a playground for you to try out the earliest versions of new APIs and new features. Things will be changing rapidly here, so we’ll limit it to private apps, but you’ll be able to preview andinfluence th... more »

Hangout Toolbox v2 - I/O Beta
+Robert Pitt and I are proud to present you the new Hangout Toolbox v2. We spent quite some time to rewrite the app from scratch and build a new design that works well with the new Google+.  We also included the new "Auto load" that allows you to load the app automatically.

Apps customers now have the option to replace chat in Gmail and Talk on Android with a new version of Hangouts that combines messaging, photos and live video calls across desktops, laptops, as well as Android and iOS phones and tablets. The new Hangouts is designed to help bring all of your real-life conversations online, across any device or platform. Just as before, Apps customers can invite up to 15 colleagues to a video call.

Washing machine just leaked ;(  Water everywhere.  Really not happy with the samsung washing machine.  No one will repair it since Samsung have some stupid policy about this, and it is has given us a huge number of problems despite being only two years old.  Now I have a huge mess in my basement too.

Hangouts Remote Desktop: tech support with a personal touch

For those of you who play tech support for friends and family, there’s now a Hangouts app to make things easier -- powered by the same technology behind Chrome Remote Desktop. 

Hangouts Remote Desktop lets you help others by controlling their computer remotely (with their permission, of course). And because you’re both in a Hangout, you can talk with and see each other during the session.

To get started, just start a Hangout and click View More Apps > Add Apps > Hangouts Remote Desktop.

Does anyone actually like the sound of typing in a Hangout?
click click clack clack click clack clack!

If you’ve done Hangouts, you’ve almost certainly experienced it.  It’s hard to chat over that typing.  Maybe you’ve accidentally been that typist, and didn’t realize it until someone muted you!   That’s why we’ve added automatic muting when you type.  Specifically:

- If someone keeps typing in a Hangout, their mic will be muted until they stop
- They'll see an in-Hangout notification, so they know they're not interrupting the conversation
- We’ll do this for larger Hangouts (4+ people).

We hope this feature makes your Hangouts experience even more enjoyable, and we welcome your feedback in the comments!

Interesting modern art museum. Quite enjoyed the exhibit on hilma af klint. She did some surprising abstract art pieces at the turn of the century. The permanent collection is nifty to a number of pieces by marcel due champs.

Improving accessibility in Hangouts

Accessibility is something we care a lot about on the Hangouts team. The Hangout Captions app, for example, enables live transcription services for the deaf and hard of hearing (http://goo.gl/4RujF). And "Take the Floor" makes it easier for sign language speakers to do a Hangout together (http://goo.gl/chyKS). Today we're rolling out two accessibility improvements in Hangouts - a Sign Language Interpreter app, and a fuller set of keyboard shortcuts. 

1) Using the Sign Language Interpreter app, deaf or hard of hearing users who prefer sign language can invite interpreters to speak and sign for them during a Hangout. They'll always see their interpreter at the top right of the window, and they'll become the focus of the Hangout whenever their interpreter speaks for them. Meteorite explosion over Russia

A meteorite flared spectacularly in the sky and exploded over the Russian region of Chelyabinsk, reportedly injuring around 400 people. Interior ministry spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov said 102 people had called for medical assistance, mostly for treatment of injuries from broken glass

Ability to use Hangout apps as a page
I am not sure when this 'feature' launched, but THIS IS HUGE NEWS!

You are now able to set a username/password for your Google+ page as an owner. This allows you to use third party tools like Hangout apps. You can also log into your page directly by using the username/password combo.

This means you can run +Hangout Toolbox for instance and lower thirds.

In the future that may also allow you to connect a YouTube channel directly to your page, which will make it easier for you to record your live Hangouts (HOA) to the correct YouTube channel.

More Hangouts love for different bandwidth environments

Today we're excited to launch two new features that improve the Hangouts experience in areas with low and/or unreliable connectivity:

1) Bandwidth slider. At the top right of every hangout is a new slider that lets you adjust your bandwidth preferences in real-time. This makes it easier to keep hangouts going, even in areas with poor connectivity.

2) Audio-only mode. Choose this mode to send and receive audio only, and thus, significantly reduce your bandwidth requirements. Other participants will only see your profile picture, but they'll hear you loud and clear.

Both of these features are coming your way today but they're rolling out separately so you may see one before you see the other. Very soon both features will be available to everyone, so give 'em a try and let us know what you... more »
