This Afternoon, I Found a Semi-Automatic 22 Handgun in My Yard.

I was WFH today, and offered to take my son shoe shopping this afternoon, between emails. As I turned past, and slightly bumped, the bush in our front yard, I heard a clatter on the walkway that sounded a lot like if you drop your phone. Instead of a phone, it turned out to be a gun. It is a small one, so I thought it was a toy, and brought it in the house for my wife to see. After looking more closely, it's labeled as a Jennings Firearms semi-automatic 22, and Google found lots of web pages about the weapon.

Why it was in our yard, I have no idea. Maybe the police officer who's scheduled to come by later will know more, about why someone chose to dispose it in our yard. (Or leave it and hope to get it again later?) But it's not the usual thing one expects to find on the way to Payless Shoes.

Buzzfeed on +Sundar Pichai, the Google CEO you HAVE Heard Of

Almost five years ago, I ran into Sundar in the stairwells of Google, having just joined the company. I was holding a MacBook Air, which I'd been given as a Noogler. Knowing he ran ChromeOS, I told him I wished I could be carrying around a Chrome laptop instead. He was apologetic, saying he agreed, and was working on it.

By 2013, when the Pixel was announced, I traded IM's with Sundar just hours after the public launch. I congratulated him on the launch, and his response, to my surprise, was a humble one... "Do you have one yet?" Surprised, I said no, as it was the first day. He responded, "I'm so sorry. You were supposed to be on the list."

I paused, saying, no, it was fine. I'd get one soon. He reiterated, "You were supposed to be on the list. Contact... more »

Tonight I Nabbed a Google Bike from a Bike Thief

Google may seem like a big faceless corporation that can afford to lose a few bikes, but the reality is that these basic rides are valuable tools for the employees who use them to make meetings and appointments across our far-flung campus. Our great facilities teams make them available for our use, and because of their trusting nature, a number are taken each year, as you can guess. It's incredibly frustrating to see these obvious Google bikes ridden around town by people who they don't belong to.

Tonight, a few blocks from home, I saw a young man (in his 20s, I assume), sitting next to one at a local business. I decided I'd see if I could get the bike back to where it belonged.

I approached him and he remained seated, wearing earbuds in his phone, as I asked him where he got the bike. He ignored me. I asked... more »

"The day had started innocently enough. I was hosting our company’s public relations firm at the office, as we worked with our product marketing and management teams on interacting with press. At a break, I stepped outside of the conference room and found the longtime senior vice president of HR waiting for me — usually not a good sign.

“Louis, please come into my office,” he said, with a tone that made it obvious this wasn’t really a choice. So I followed."

Google is incredibly lucky to have Sundar as CEO. I bring up the story because while it's a small one, and I'm just one person, I know Sundar is friendly, approachable, humble and focused - all attributes necessary to earn and succeed the role he's found himself in today. Now, all of you know Sundar already, but this article will help you know him more, and see the person we already knew well.

Thanks +Mathew Honan for the piece.___

We Need Smart and Personal Streams, Not Just the Latest Updates
#twitter   #media   #social

"Once again, the tech web is aflutter about a proposed change in Twitter’s timeline — as they have finally made a choice to offer more than a simply chronological feed of updates displayed in the order they were posted.

While a chronological order of tweets can be considered a hallmark definition of what Twitter is today, and truthfully, one of its most addictive features as each new Tweet rolls in, it’s also a detriment to those who aren’t ready to be constantly hooked to the information IV drip."

How to run a fantasy stock portfolio with friends, leveraging Google Finance and Google Sheets #finance   #stocks

If you follow the stock market or news in general, you know that 2016 has opened up rough for those used to consistent gains. At the beginning of this year, I set up a fantasy stock market contest with a few friends, and in near real-time, we're seeing our virtual portfolios rise and fall, and competing with one another - all by leveraging Google Finance and a shared Google spreadsheet. It's never been more fun to watch all of us lose money. Here's how to set yours up.

4,920 Girl Scout Cookie Boxes Just Showed Up In My Garage

It's Girl Scout cookie season. And, like last year, our home is the cookie cupboard for the area, so the truck arrived with all our pallets, and now we are overflowing with Thin Mints, Trefoils, Do-si-Dos, Savvanah Smiles and Tagalogs. Our daughter, as part of her troop, is selling the cookies, and for the first time, you can order online.

Otherwise, I have to eat all these, and nobody (except me) wants that.

You might have seen +Dead Zebra, Inc's post about this year's Android mini collectible for the 2016 Chinese New Year. (http://www.deadzebra.com/android/2016-chinese-new-year-android/) I just managed to snag a few for me, and they'll be taking space on the shelves at home where they belong. Nice bright red colors on this one.___

"... it was no surprise that when Google announced in June of 2014 that it had built a virtual reality headset almost entirely of cardboard, many people thought it was another of the company’s gags—if several months delayed. "For most people, new ideas and perspectives make us uncomfortable. It’s easier and less taxing to surround ourselves with people who agree with our worldview, and reinforce our way of thinking, to make us believe we are correct. We self-select our communities, both in the physical world, and the online space, and these friends or peers become an extension of our own identity.
A byproduct of this selection process is that our communities end up looking a lot like us and behaving like us."

At Google, when we have issues with our laptops, tablets or phones, we have excellent colleagues trained to make things work again, and dedicated spaces, called Tech Stop. Google's famous for its cafes, yes, but smart geniuses at Tech Stop are even better. This special edition Android figurine showcases the Tech Stop employee with a zipup jacket and mandatory Ethernet cable.

There was a 4 alarm house fire on our street today.

The owners appeared physically unharmed, but they likely lost much of the home. Not sure on the cause, but firefighters smashed the roof to extinguish the flames and it didn't spread to any neighboring structures.

I asked him again, and he took his earbuds out.

He mumbled, "on the street in Santa Clara."

I told him the bike was a Google bike and that I worked at Google. Could I take it? He didn't have a good answer.

I said, "can I take the bike?", and asked if the drink in the basket was his. It was. I gave him his drink. I took the bike.

Then I had the matter of taking the bike home. I popped the trunk and placed the bike in there, pinning the wheel so it wouldn't slip out in normal driving. Then with my trunk open and rear wheel loosely spinning, I drove home and the bike is now safe in my backyard. I'll return it after the holiday.

And yes, this may not have been the safest decision ever, but it was successful. Please don't steal our bikes. We'll give you free email if you choose not to.

Today, Twitter announced job cuts impacting 336 employees. I've been in a front row seat for multiple rounds of layoffs before. I've been laid off before. It's emotionally draining, and there's a tug of war for loyalty between the company and employee that never truly ends until you separate. Here are some of the stories from my experience.

Google Express Just Delivered a New OnHub

The reviews for Google's new wireless router have been exceptional, and I've honestly been a little jealous it's one product I don't already have. It's been sold out everywhere, from Best Buy to Amazon, Fry's and the Google Store online. So this morning, when I saw it on +Google Express, I had to try and see if I could get my hands on one. And boom. It's here. I'll be setting it up tonight, and will let you know how it goes.

Marketwatch on Going Solar: Renting or Buying

Over a year ago, we entered a PPA (power purchase agreement) with +Sunrun and added solar panels to our house, with an expectation we'd save about $60,000 in the 20 year contract. We've already saved more than $4,000, and brought our monthly bills down from about $300 a month to less than $20. This month's bill is $16.16 for a standard home with kids who use electricity constantly.

If you're interested in Sunrun, check them out: http://tinyurl.com/gosunrun or ask me anything you like. Our savings details are here: https://goo.gl/wrkdfx

This little bird strayed too far from the nest

Yesterday evening, at a group picnic with friends and family, the kids gathered around a tree in the park, having discovered a small bird that had prematurely left its nest. With mother nowhere in sight, eyes shut, and barely able to fly, it was in a perilous spot, be it from curious grubby kid hands, predators or simple starvation and neglect.

I was able to capture the bird and pass it to our local wildlife society so it can be rehabilitated and released (thanks to +Chris Beaupre and +Todd Beaupre). But before we passed it along, this little animation was maded from my close up photos. Tweet tweet!

Of note, the photo attached is from the Web (http://clocknuts.com/Firearms/002-P-0607.htm) and is the same model we found. I'm glad I found it, and not the kids, and that neither the wife nor I managed to discharge it. Guns are dumb.___

Jelly Belly CEO's Extreme Right Wing Husband Kills Party-goer With Tank

Excerpt: "That the chairman of Jelly Belly stores a fleet of military vehicles 45 miles outside of San Francisco may come as a surprise to the many whose associations with the company trend toward bubble gum over big guns. But Rowland has also been known as an avowed conservative who donated to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign, and who most recently spoke out against equal rights for trans students in California schools."

Sounds like a winner.

Off the Grid for a Week, Gallivanting in the Forest
#family #vacation #california #nature

You haven't heard from me for a bit. That's because this week, my family and I took a little break and unplugged. We were completely out of cell phone access (even with Project Fi!) and had no Internet ... for pretty much the whole week. We enjoyed the great outdoors and many activities at a camp in Calaveras County. On the final day, we took a trip through Big Trees State Park in Calaveras, seeing the giant Sequoia, Redwoods and more.

We're back! Here are some of the pictures.

You say Cupertino and think Apple. You say Mountain View and think Google. Housing prices in Sunnyvale are up faster than all the surrounding towns. I think this is going to continue to accelerate.

+Timehop also reminds me it was 93 degrees that day. Quite warm in our little apartment. She came home to us once she was all of two kilograms. But she's much bigger now.
