martin shervington1,006,861In this interview with the brightest chap on the subject, I ad going to be asking every question I've wanted to ask Mark for months! We should all get the most understanding on this whole subject area in a rapid fire, energetic and dense 30-40 minute session. Content will include... What is ‘authorship’? How do you set authorship up? (G+ account, website, publishers) What is the benefit of setting it up? Can a business Page have authorship? What is ‘rel publisher’ all about? What is PageRank? (simple version!) Is this all about ‘relevance’? How do the people you to whom you are connected matter now? What advice would you give to: a) an individual, and  b) a business to get it all set up! See you all there :DJust about everything you need to know about 'authorship', 'author rank' and 'social SEO', with Mark Traphagen2013-03-30 18:00:0094

Gailen Mapes85,014Hand Picked Photographers Circles - "Unknown or Other" Camera S-U - 26 of 27Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to March 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting February 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles   #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcirclesNote: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes .   Thanks for your cooperation.2015-03-26 10:26:58194000

Dylan Cuffy21,984#WhatLiesAground To begin this morning's run, a replacement version of Fab 2—where everyone's a winner and the +1's don't matter. As I explained in yesterday's posts, a certain site known as AndroidDissected recently rebranded into +TechDissected, shuttering their old G+ page in the process. Thanks to some detective work with Google search, I went forward to patch things up.And now you know, folks! Stay tuned in the next few days for the "Fab 500 Actives", generated with +Circloscope.(For +Amig Von Hallen, CS&M owner +AyJay Schibig, and circle guru +Stephan Klimmeck)----Original version:https://plus.google.com/103283675665371670119/posts/Ff3BpgYZopK2015-03-07 14:40:115009810

Dylan Cuffy21,408#WhatLiesAground Welcome, one and all, to the final edition of Fab 2—where everyone's a winner and the +1's don't matter. Luckily enough, no account of significance has gone away.As I continue wrapping things up in my old quarters, say hello to our last 25 (all of whom I found on G+ comments and posts alike). This list took me less than 40 minutes to compile (with the help of +All my +), and does not include members in the just launched follow-up, Fab 3.• +Manish Singh-SEO, +Sachin Saroj, and +Rainbow Craft™ 2015 (who requested inclusion, last we met at CS&M)• Four furry artists: +Marquis The Eevee (whose work is reminiscent of "RoareyRaccoon's"), +Scarlett Wolf  (via +Artix the Inheritor at Furry+), +ApolloWolf Productions (via +Harold Gardner), and +Haz Fox (who just approached 100 followers lately; via a Furry+ post of his)• +Radim Kacer (from the Czech Republic; via G+'s personalised circle recommendations)• +Ross University School of Medicine (in Portsmouth, Dominica)• +Johannes Kleiber (from Germany; via the Hot stream)• As seen on the Explore stream: +Sherrie Lacritz (relative newcomer from South Carolina), +Andrésy 2015-02-25 07:46:395003111
Dylan Cuffy21,158#WhatLiesAground And without further ado...Welcome to another edition of Fab 2, where everyone's a winner and the +1's don't matter. As two accounts (Patsy Priebe and Hanna Lynn) went away since my last update, I've had to bring in +Sean Cushing and +Crimson Star to keep things fresh. Again, consider yourselves welcome!As I mentioned yesterday in another post, our last 25 members are on the way—and I only have ten days to choose carefully and cautiously. In addition to the ones I mentioned above, say hello to:• The +Circloscope team (whose tool I'll use to generate a fresh new list of active Fab members next month)• +Gernot Glaeser and +蕭文男/Xiāo Wénnán (from my recent follower queue)• +Isabel Merchan (via +Brian Gill)• +Gregory Colbert (no relation to elephant champion Stephen) and +VICENTE PEÑARROJA APARICI (via G+'s personalised circle suggestions)• +David Marx (no relation to '80s hitmaker Richard), +Christian Rogers, +PHOTOMENTARY by Nikon, +Lena Levin, and +Paul L (via the Hot stream)• +Jørgen Jensen and +2015-02-18 06:36:25475131421
Dylan Cuffy20,967#WhatLiesAground And welcome to another edition of Fab 2, where everyone's a winner and the +1's don't matter. This new version arrives over one month later than estimated; blame it on keeping up with +Daniel Stock's team back last holiday season.Alas, giving you a full list of whom I've circled in the interim will take me hours to compile. So as it stands, special greetings go out to these select newcomers:• +Larry Fournillier (out of Trinidad and Tobago)• +Anthony Deane (out of Barbados)• +Jerry Blank (my last circle addition of 2014)• +R.G Kirk (follower #20,000 of mine de facto; Australian poet)• Tsū network members +Sylvia Sotuyo (CC0 supporter, just like me), +Phil Aston (Cornwall photographer), +Adriana Popovici (recommended by +Daniel Mihai Popescu), and +Linda Lee Williams (fellow author)• +Sarah Draws cartoons and +Leah Winchell (thanks for your takes on Samson Dixwell!)• +Hannah Heath (thanks for the guide to character development!)• +Author and Illustrator Rosemary Wells (creator of Timothy Goes to School and Max & Ruby; sending you a licensing request e-mail anytime soon)• +Russell Gould2015-02-07 21:39:46450168

Gailen Mapes74,639Hand Picked Photographers Circles - "Unknown or Other" Camera S-U - 30 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to December 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting November 7th.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. Thanks for your cooperation.2014-12-30 11:55:14193001

An associate on Facebook made a post about how she gets crazy with rage when men leave the toilet seat up, then asked for her Facebook contacts to share their views on the matter. So I shared my view about it, and in response, she promptly deleted me from her contacts.

Folks, if you don't actually want people's opinions, then don't ask for them.

WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY

Here's a sea nettle (Chrysoara fuscescens). This is a wild jellyfish, photographed in the ocean, not photographed in an aquarium. I hope you enjoy it.

Remember that every Wednesday is Wildlife Wednesday. Post a wildlife photo you made, and tag it #WildlifeWednesday so that others can see. I look forward to seeing the wildlife you've met!

This societal change over the last few decades has surprised me. I grew up walking home from school without parental supervision. I spent my youth wandering as I pleased, going over to friends' houses or to the market, playing by the local creek, exploring on my bike, etc. Sometimes my brother (2 years older than I am) was with me, other times not.

And this wasn't just me. This was the case for all the kids around.

I wasn't really aware of how much this has changed until Dr. K had a daughter. Then I got to see that the local elementary school requires parents to drop off and pick up kids. Now I'm aware that kids being outside the house on their own (in the USA) is often considered parental neglect, leading to interventions by Child Protective Services, to arrests, and to kids being taken away. Now I'm aware that kids being outside the house on their own (in the USA) is often considered parental neglect, leading to interventions by Child Protective Services, to arrests, and to kids being taken away. Even for stuff like walking home from school or over to a neighbor's house alone, or in some cases for playing alone in front of the house.

As I've come to see, most kids these days are prevented from ever being entirely alone, exploring their area, or doing anything self-directed, until adolescence or later.

I can understand why some might find it frightening to let their kids wander around by themselves. And I don't blame parents for doing what is necessary to prevent being arrested or having their kids taken away from them by the state. But I do find it concerning that many kids are prevented from self-directed activity and exploration, and prevented from experiencing independence and developing autonomy.___

I remember several years ago when all the photographers were going on about how these super-high-resolution cameras would be too noisy, not light sensitive enough, far beyond what lenses could resolve, far beyond what human eyes or autofocus systems could handle, etc. They were all going on about limitations imposed by the laws of physics which could never be overcome. And they were saying that the files would be bigger than they'd want to deal with, and larger than anyone would need. Everyone was calling for the camera manufacturers to "end the megapixel wars,"  and make cameras with lower resolution and larger photo sites, with higher maximum ISO.

That was back when the high end cameras were around 11 megapixels. Now a nearly 51 megapixel camera is announced, and it seems like every photographer has already pre-ordered it.

My campaign for funding the publication of The Onshore Lives of Northern Elephant Seals ended yesterday. It went slightly better than I expected. Thank you all.

Now, it's time to make the book – and start my own press, for all of my future books. I'm excited!

Apparently, the Horror Writers Association is calling for Amazon to create a system to allow writers to get book reviews removed when the writers deem them inappropriate. You might imagine that, as a writer, I'd be on board with this petition. But when you get down to the details, my feelings are mixed. Going through the kinds of reviews the HRA wants to be removable, any review that...

indicates the customer has not read the book, but only a small portion of it, such as a free electronic sample;

That's OK, so far. If you can sufficiently demonstrate that a reviewer did not actually read the book, I think that is reasonable grounds for review removal.

includes spoilers which, once revealed, could significantly reduce interest in the work;

I can't go along with this one. Sometimes, giving the best review one can might require spoilers. Perhaps there should be a warning in place that this review contains spoilers, but that's all. Moreover, if a book is good, then the interest in the book and the enjoyment of the reading experience can't be significantly impacted by a spoiler. Spoilers only ruin the experience with bad works that rely exclusively on gimmickry.

includes negative personal remarks about the author;

That seems unnecessarily censorious, in my opinion. This article gives the example of bullying reviewers saying the author "should be raped in prison." Seriously? That's a nasty, immature thing for a reviewer to say, but if an author is going to let that get to him or her, she needs to have a thicker skin. Let idiots who say such things have their say, and don't worry about it. I should also note that sometimes negative remarks about the author may be appropriate in a review. I know I've read some books where an accurate and informative review would have to mention that the author was lazy, and just quickly cranking out trash in the hope for quick money.

is focused on the work's price rather than its content.

If any author would like to make a case why a review focused on the price should be removed, I'm willing to listen. However, my initial impression is that this could be a legitimate kind of review, and striking out reviews of this type seems unnecessary and and overly censorious.

While I can agree with removing reviews where it is demonstrable that the reviewer never read the book, I don't think I could join a petition that called for removal of these other types of reviews.

What do you think?___

I showed this photo of a double-crested cormorant with a sculpin to my aunt, yesterday, and she quite liked it. So now I'm showing it to you. :-)

Remember that every Wednesday is Wildlife Wednesday. Post a wildlife photo you made, and tag it #WildlifeWednesday so that others can see. I look forward to seeing the wildlife you've met!

The Last Day of the Fundraising Campaign for My Next Book

Today is the last day of my fundraising campaign to fund the publication of my next book, The Onshore Lives of Northern Elephant Seals. If you are interested, go check out the webpage for the campaign at: http://igg.me/at/onshore-lives

To show you what the book is like, here's a small sample where I discuss molting:

Northern Elephant Seals come to land in Spring and Summer to molt. They show up sequentially, probably due to the different distances of where they're traveling from. In April or May, the female elephant seals in their prime, and the yearlings, show up. In May or June, the young adults arrive. In July or August, the mature males arrive. Today is the last day of my fundraising campaign to fund the publication of my next book, The Onshore Lives of Northern Elephant Seals. If you are interested, go check out the webpage for the campaign at: http://igg.me/at/onshore-lives

By coming and going in progressive waves, there's more room for each within the limited space of their colonies. Seals stay on land for a little under 4 weeks, fasting, while their old, brownish coats peel off, and are replaced with new, darker coats, underneath. Then they head back to the North Pacific.

Most mammals shed and replace little bits of skin and hair constantly. Elephant seals, however, lose and replace theirs all at once, a process known as catastrophic molting. Since their dive reflex shunts blood from their surface to their core, their skin and fur can't receive the nutritional support necessary for epidermal growth while they are at sea. Consequently, they have to come to land to abruptly exuviate and regrow whole new pelts. During the process, they might briefly splash around in the tide to cool off, but they don't go out to the open water because they can't insulate properly from the cold sea while their old layer is peeling away and the new layer is not yet fully grown in.___

This is perfect timing for this news – for me. I just picked up my completely rebuilt 2011 Macbook Pro from Apple this morning. With a new screen, new motherboard, new hard disk, new trackpad, new battery, etc., it seems like a brand new computer.

I was just thinking that I should be fine with this laptop for another four years, and then I saw this announcement of a new direction for Apple's laptops that I'd find onerous and obnoxious. I'm glad I'll be able to avoid portless laptops for at least a few more years.

Being severely dyslexic is awkward when doing book readings. I tried to deal with it at previous book readings by memorizing the entirety of what I was going to "read," then reciting it from memory.

It turns out that doesn't work well when reading children's books, because the children in the audience constantly stop you to ask questions, which makes recitation from memory difficult.

Anyway, my book reading went really well. The venue was packed! Everyone stayed until the end. People asked dozens of questions. All of these are good signs that the people who attended my reading were interested and engaged.

A few notes to myself for future readings:

1) Talk loudly;

2) Hold the microphone close to my face;

3) Make announcements at the beginning, not at the end;

4) Bring a laser pointer.

I wrote this book for Miss B., whom you can see sitting on my shoulders in this picture. She might be at my book reading. (She was ill, so we'll have to see whether she's all better by Saturday.)

I had several notable dreams, last night. One of them was about the next big trend in photography: lighting everything on fire!

Product photography? High speed splashes were passé. Now, every product was engulfed in flames. Portrait photography? Every portrait was illuminated with the stark lighting of nearby flaming objects against the darkness, or they were Photoshopped with people on fire. Urbex? Photographers weren't just photographing abandoned buildings, they were torching them. Landscapes? Every beach photographer brought canisters of kerosene to pour on the foreground sand and light it up.

Lighting everything on fire made every picture look dramatic! It didn't matter whether it meant anything. Folks would post their latest fiery photos on Facebook, 500PX, and so on, and the likes, etc., would come flooding in. All the camera manufacturers touted how their cameras had great dynamic range for shooting conflagrations. And all the third-party photo gear makers were selling the latest remote I controlled, synchronized ignition systems, heat shields for cameras, and a variety of chemicals to change the colors of flames. All of the photography gurus were offering fire workshops. And everywhere you looked you could see the ashes and cinders where photographers had burned subjects up for striking shots.___

Folks, if you don't actually want people's opinions, then don't ask for them.

Here's an article about whether the PonoPlayer delivers the better musical experience it promises. I found this article fascinating - not because I care about the PonoPlayer (I don't care about it at all), and not because the article is insightful (it seems somewhat lacking in insight) - but, rather, because of what it inadvertently indicates about fidelity, perception, and preference.

David Pogue did some blind testing on people whether they could tell the difference between the PonoPlayer and an iPhone; and, if they could, which they preferred. The results were (A) that most people couldn't detect much difference, (B) when they could detect differences, they slightly preferred the sound from the iPhone, and (C) they didn't really care about the slight sound differences, and did not think the difference was worth paying for.

This is despite the purported advantages of the PonoPlayer system - more data in the sound file, better electronic components, etc - and also despite the fact that numerous big name musicians, such as Neil Young and Tom Petty, have gone on record saying the PonoPlayer sounds dramatically better.

Thus, the "Emperor Has No Clothes" headline.

Now, let me venture some guesses, theories, opinions, and lessons from this.

First: In regard to the claim that the music files for the PonoPlayer are less compressed / not compressed than the currently popular music formats, and therefore the music is higher resolution, and the claim that the electronic components are capable of better fidelity - I'm guessing those claims are true. If they are true, then the "Emperor Has No Clothes" headline seems somewhat misleading / off-base. Furthermore, the veracity of these claims should be fairly easy for those with an electrical engineering background and a software engineering background to determine, but the article gives no indication that such an investigation was done. To say "The Emperor Has No Clothes" without assessing the technical merits of the claims would be rather sloppy journalism, in my estimation.

Second: In regard to claims by Neil Young, Tom Petty, David Crosby, James Taylor, Dave Matthews, etc., saying they could hear dramatically better sound quality with the PonoPlayer - I'm torn about whether I think this is true. On the one hand, they probably do have better training about sound quality, and more sophisticated ears. To draw an analogy (which I'll emphasize more, later), it's like professional photographers being more aware than non photographers of chromatic aberration, halos, posterization, over sharpening, blocked shadows and blown highlights, low resolution, etc., when looking at pictures. On the other hand, most career musicians have exposed themselves to dangerously loud music on a routine basis, and almost all of them are hard of hearing. Their inability to hear well certainly casts doubt on their ability to discern the PonoPlayer's quality differences. Tentatively, I'll grant that these rock stars truly could hear better sound quality with the PonoPlayer.

Then what happened? Why couldn't the tested people consistently hear the differences? Why would they slightly prefer the iPhone, if it had objectively lower resolution and / or worse fidelity? Why would they not care much about better sound quality, and not feel that it was worth paying for?

First, the flip side of what I mentioned above, the average listener is not trained to tune in to fine technical distinctions in resolution and fidelity. If technical issues are below a certain threshold, they'll be lost on the average listener. Meanwhile, these same technical issues might be magnified by the hyper-attuned audio sensibilities of professional musicians, so such differences might seem dramatic and apparent to them.

Second - and I'm going out on a limb with some wild guesses, here - it's easy to imagine several reasons why people would prefer the iPhone's sound, even if it truly does have objectively lower audio resolution and worse fidelity. For one thing many compression algorithms cause some "sharpening." For example, with photos, the JPEG compression algorithms slightly sharpen pictures. Similarly, it could be that the more compressed audio files on the iPhone are slightly sharper than the uncompressed PonoPlayer files. Have you ever seen how beginning photographers often greatly oversharpen photos? People like oversharpening. They like the way it makes pictures "pop!" Similarly, they probably like such sharpening with audio clarity, and the more compressed file format may provide some such sharpening. For another thing, I would not be surprised if the iPhone's sound reproduction was optimized to sound pleasing to average listeners, and likewise if the PonoPlayer was optimized to sound accurate. The two are not necessarily the same thing. I'm reminded of when my friend Bill would get in front of the microphone for interviewing people; he would tinker with the knobs on the sound system and make his voice sound deep and smooth and resonant. He was striving for "pleasing," not for "accurate." To give an analogy with photography: Almost everybody prefers oversaturated colors over life-like colors, and almost everybody oversaturates their colors. When seeing and hearing recordings, we perceive them differently than seeing things in real life, and (for many people), recorded experiences need more emphasis and more "oomph" for them to seem "lifelike." So, if the PonoPlayer sounded accurate while the iPhone boosted the bass or some such, people might have preferred sound enhancements meant to please, over lifelike fidelity.

Third, as for why people didn't care, even when they could hear differences - I can only speak for myself, but I'm not an audiophile; in fact, I'm somewhat of the opposite. Not because I can't hear any difference between a $100 stereo and a $5,000 stereo. I can. But that difference doesn't make the music particularly more enjoyable for me. That's because the experience of the music occurs in my head, not in my ears. Thus, as long as the sound quality meets a modest standard, as long as I can hear the relationships of the notes to each other and the relationships of the instruments to each other - my brain will take care of the rest. All my ears need is for the content to be adequately conveyed. Beyond that, great emphasis on optimum sound is mostly frivolous. And I think that's the way it is for most people.

As for the larger lessons to be drawn from this: I see this as a bit of a morality tale about musicians with hyper-sensitized audio sensibilities getting a case of "gearhead disease" when it comes to the pursuit of sound fidelity, and assuming that the public hears sound quality the way they do - only to discover the public can't easily detect these technicalities, and doesn't generally care much about them. But the lesson goes beyond this one case. For example, it applies to Peter Jackson getting goofy over making films at 48 frames per second. It applies to every photographer who thinks they need a camera with 14 bit depth color instead of 12, every photographer who thinks they need a camera with an 11 stop dynamic range instead of 10, every photographer who thinks their 20 megapixel camera won't be able to compete with the coming 50 megapixel cameras - instead of staying focused on what they do with the cameras.

I'm not saying artists shouldn't take care to make the best they can. I'm just saying to let this be a reminder that most viewers barely notice the technical minutiae and don't really care much about it; instead, they focus on the content. Keep in mind what really matters and what doesn't. Especially when manufacturers announce new gear.___

This author's list of "12 worst" religious ideas is interesting. While I do find the ideas listed problematic, there are numerous other prime candidates for such a list, which I find equally concerning. I don't think I could narrow it down to a mere 12. To mention just a small sample of others that might belong on such a list: the idea that we are born reprobate, wicked, corrupt; vicarious sin; vicarious redemption; abnegation of life; the idea that there's a supernatural, evil force constantly tempting us, leading us astray, working against us, and that we are routinely encountering manifestations of this; the idea that God owns us, we are His slaves, and he has the right to do with us as He sees fit; the idea that we have no moral compass without God; the idea that morality equals God's command and obedience to God's command; the idea that "God did it"-type... more »

I snapped this photo in a local bookstore, yesterday. I shook my head that they set up a monument of stupidity in the name of an intellectual pursuit. Lose a bit of humanity? Srsly? They'd rather take swipes at their imagined enemies than realize the "enemies" are actually potential allies. They'd rather squander their business opportunities than embrace them.

This is a bookstore that is half the size it was last year. (The other half has been turned into a furniture showroom.) This is a bookstore so ossified that they can't buy books they want. (They told me last year that they love my book and would like to carry it, but they won't - because they buy all their books through only one single distributor, and that distributor didn't carry my book at the time.)

In a future printing of my book, Growing Up Humming, I might mention that the kind of seed pod the hummingbird nest is built upon is a sweet Hakea tree seed pod (Hakea suaveolens), and then include a photo of a sweet Hakea seed pod next to a cherry for size reference, and say that the nest is built on a seed pod about the size of a cherry. (I wouldn't necessarily use this photo; I have a bunch of photos of Hakea seed pods next to cherries.) Before I do this, I have a couple of questions:

1) Are cherries well known around the world, or would folks in most countries be unfamiliar with them?

2) Would you agree that using a cherry for size reference is better than using a quarter for size reference?

Thank you for your thoughts.

I strongly disagree with Pope Francis about this.

If someone believes cockamamie and harmful things for foolish reasons, invoking the word "faith" does not grant an automatic free pass.

Faith is not off the table for criticism, satire, or ridicule. Sometimes, such expression accords with the "obligation to say what he thinks in the name of the common good."

If one's faithistic sensibilities are so fragile that the faithful can't take the heat, that means they need to reexamine how they hold their faith; it does not mean that the contrarian may never legitimately speak against the faith.

In regard to Francis's notion that the limits of freedom of speech mean you should not cause offense, I think freedom of speech is most relevant where people find it troubling.

And insults alone never provoke violence; that's just a weak excuse for poor impulse control.

I must also note the hypocritical irony here, of him saying in one breath that you can't speak badly about people's religions, then in the next breath calling other people's religions "deviant" and "an aberration." ___

Here's my last photo of the year, a phone snapshot I just made in the woods.

A fallen oak leaf. A gnawed deer femur. An old stump.

Deciduation, death, deterioration.

For me, this gives a feeling of senescence, fitting with the last hour or so of sunlight for 2014.

I hope you enjoy it.

Have a great New Year's Eve!
