martin shervington959,454In this interview with the brightest chap on the subject, I ad going to be asking every question I've wanted to ask Mark for months! We should all get the most understanding on this whole subject area in a rapid fire, energetic and dense 30-40 minute session. Content will include... What is ‘authorship’? How do you set authorship up? (G+ account, website, publishers) What is the benefit of setting it up? Can a business Page have authorship? What is ‘rel publisher’ all about? What is PageRank? (simple version!) Is this all about ‘relevance’? How do the people you to whom you are connected matter now? What advice would you give to: a) an individual, and  b) a business to get it all set up! See you all there :DJust about everything you need to know about 'authorship', 'author rank' and 'social SEO', with Mark Traphagen2013-03-30 18:00:0094

Dylan Cuffy21,408#WhatLiesAground Welcome, one and all, to the final edition of Fab 2—where everyone's a winner and the +1's don't matter. Luckily enough, no account of significance has gone away.As I continue wrapping things up in my old quarters, say hello to our last 25 (all of whom I found on G+ comments and posts alike). This list took me less than 40 minutes to compile (with the help of +All my +), and does not include members in the just launched follow-up, Fab 3.• +Manish Singh-SEO, +Sachin Saroj, and +Rainbow Craft™ 2015 (who requested inclusion, last we met at CS&M)• Four furry artists: +Marquis The Eevee (whose work is reminiscent of "RoareyRaccoon's"), +Scarlett Wolf  (via +Artix the Inheritor at Furry+), +ApolloWolf Productions (via +Harold Gardner), and +Haz Fox (who just approached 100 followers lately; via a Furry+ post of his)• +Radim Kacer (from the Czech Republic; via G+'s personalised circle recommendations)• +Ross University School of Medicine (in Portsmouth, Dominica)• +Johannes Kleiber (from Germany; via the Hot stream)• As seen on the Explore stream: +Sherrie Lacritz (relative newcomer from South Carolina), +Andrésy 2015-02-25 07:46:395003111
Dylan Cuffy21,158#WhatLiesAground And without further ado...Welcome to another edition of Fab 2, where everyone's a winner and the +1's don't matter. As two accounts (Patsy Priebe and Hanna Lynn) went away since my last update, I've had to bring in +Sean Cushing and +Crimson Star to keep things fresh. Again, consider yourselves welcome! As I mentioned yesterday in another post, our last 25 members are on the way—and I only have ten days to choose carefully and cautiously. In addition to the ones I mentioned above, say hello to:• The +Circloscope team (whose tool I'll use to generate a fresh new list of active Fab members next month)• +Gernot Glaeser and +蕭文男/Xiāo Wénnán (from my recent follower queue)• +Isabel Merchan (via +Brian Gill)• +Gregory Colbert (no relation to elephant champion Stephen) and +VICENTE PEÑARROJA APARICI (via G+'s personalised circle suggestions)• +David Marx (no relation to '80s hitmaker Richard), +Christian Rogers, +PHOTOMENTARY by Nikon, +Lena Levin, and +Paul L (via the Hot stream)• +Jørgen Jensen and +2015-02-18 06:36:25475101115
Dylan Cuffy20,967#WhatLiesAground And welcome to another edition of Fab 2, where everyone's a winner and the +1's don't matter. This new version arrives over one month later than estimated; blame it on keeping up with +Daniel Stock's team back last holiday season.Alas, giving you a full list of whom I've circled in the interim will take me hours to compile. So as it stands, special greetings go out to these select newcomers:• +Larry Fournillier (out of Trinidad and Tobago)• +Anthony Deane (out of Barbados)• +Jerry Blank (my last circle addition of 2014)• +R.G Kirk (follower #20,000 of mine de facto; Australian poet)• Tsū network members +Sylvia Sotuyo (CC0 supporter, just like me), +Phil Aston (Cornwall photographer), +Adriana Popovici (recommended by +Daniel Mihai Popescu), and +Linda Lee Williams (fellow author)• +Sarah Draws cartoons and +Leah Winchell (thanks for your takes on Samson Dixwell!)• +Hannah Heath (thanks for the guide to character development!)• +Author and Illustrator Rosemary Wells (creator of Timothy Goes to School and Max & Ruby; sending you a licensing request e-mail anytime soon)• +Russell Gould2015-02-07 21:39:46450168

Gailen Mapes75,854Hand Picked Photographers Circles - "Unknown or Other" Camera S-U - 30 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to January 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting December 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles   #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcirclesNote: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes .   Thanks for your cooperation.2015-01-30 11:36:21190000

Gailen Mapes72,417Hand Picked Photographers Circles - "Unknown or Other" Camera S-U - 30 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to November 7th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting October 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles   #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes .   Thanks for your cooperation.2014-11-30 11:33:31198000

Dylan Cuffy17,642#WhatLiesAground And...welcome to another edition of Fab 2, where everyone's a winner and the +1's don't matter. Can't believe it's only been four days since the last update!Just so you know, I have 17,600+ followers/1,000,000+ page views at this writing (per +CircleCount). Point of no return, isn't it? (Especially since I linked up my feed to Bloglovin' early this morning.)Time to say hello to these newest additions:• +Anthony Long (founder of Tsū, the new social service; doesn't use G+, but is a honorary member of my network)• +Amelia Sides (owner of the Writing Pit)• +Rebekkah Niles (from whom I shared a beginner's guide to writing book synopses earlier this week)• +Eustacia Tan (who introduced me to +Amazon.com's WriteOn last month)• +Kimi Arista, +Micha Fire, and +Amy Knepper (whom Ms. Tan mentioned in her WriteOn post)• +All my + (whose post backlog feature is serving me well as I prepare this list; along with CircleCount, they are the only big players in town when it comes to G+ stats these days. Say, is anyone planning to resurrect Google Plus Suomi anytime soon—and buy back the domain?)• +Stephan Klimmeck (who keeps track of circle creators; you can thank +P. An associate on Facebook made a post about how she gets crazy with rage when men leave the toilet seat up, then asked for her Facebook contacts to share their views on the matter. So I shared my view about it, and in response, she promptly deleted me from her contacts.

Folks, if you don't actually want people's opinions, then don't ask for them.

WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY

It's Wildlife Wednesday, curated by +Morkel Erasmus and +Mike Spinak

Here's an enraged, bloody elephant seal, in the midst of battle.

Every Wednesday is Wildlife Wednesday. Post a picture of wildlife, and tag it #WildlifeWednesday so others can find and look at it. I look forward to seeing the wild animals you've encountered.

This is one of the many pictures in my next book, The Onshore Lives of Northern Elephant Seals. If you'd like to help me publish the book, you can, by pre-ordering the eBook here:

There are also many other things available for helping fund the publication of the book, such as a digital file of an elephant seal photo that you can print large, and three hours of wildlife photography instruction through live video conferencing.

Thankyou... more »

I've been saying for years that the science to back the notion that dietary cholesterol intake affects blood serum cholesterol levels just isn't there. It's nice to see the U.S. government is finally coming around, and dropping their guidelines against cholesterol.

Enjoy your dinner.

Being severely dyslexic is awkward when doing book readings. I tried to deal with it at previous book readings by memorizing the entirety of what I was going to "read," then reciting it from memory.

It turns out that doesn't work well when reading children's books, because the children in the audience constantly stop you to ask questions, which makes recitation from memory difficult.

Anyway, my book reading went really well. The venue was packed! Everyone stayed until the end. People asked dozens of questions. All of these are good signs that the people who attended my reading were interested and engaged.

A few notes to myself for future readings:

1) Talk loudly;

2) Hold the microphone close to my face;

3) Make announcements at the beginning, not at the end;

4) Bring a laser pointer.

I mentioned the other day that I will be giving a book reading of Growing Up Humming, at the grand opening of the Rinconada Library (1213 Newell Road, Palo Alto), on Saturday, February 14th. Tomorrow. I hope you can attend.

I wrote this book for Miss B., whom you can see sitting on my shoulders in this picture. She might be at my book reading. (She was ill, so we'll have to see whether she's all better by Saturday.)

I had several notable dreams, last night. One of them was about the next big trend in photography: lighting everything on fire!

Product photography? High speed splashes were passé. Now, every product was engulfed in flames. Portrait photography? Every portrait was illuminated with the stark lighting of nearby flaming objects against the darkness, or they were Photoshopped with people on fire. Urbex? Photographers weren't just photographing abandoned buildings, they were torching them. Landscapes? Every beach photographer brought canisters of kerosene to pour on the foreground sand and light it up.

Lighting everything on fire made every picture look dramatic! It didn't matter whether it meant anything. Folks would post their latest fiery photos on Facebook, 500PX, and so on, and the likes, etc., would come flooding in. All the camera manufacturers touted how their cameras had... more »

Lighting everything on fire made every picture look dramatic! It didn't matter whether it meant anything. Folks would post their latest fiery photos on Facebook, 500PX, and so on, and the likes, etc., would come flooding in. All the camera manufacturers touted how their cameras had great dynamic range for shooting conflagrations. And all the third-party photo gear makers were selling the latest remote I controlled, synchronized ignition systems, heat shields for cameras, and a variety of chemicals to change the colors of flames. All of the photography gurus were offering fire workshops. And everywhere you looked you could see the ashes and cinders where photographers had burned subjects up for striking shots.___

Here's an article about whether the PonoPlayer delivers the better musical experience it promises. I found this article fascinating - not because I care about the PonoPlayer (I don't care about it at all), and not because the article is insightful (it seems somewhat lacking in insight) - but, rather, because of what it inadvertently indicates about fidelity, perception, and preference.

David Pogue did some blind testing on people whether they could tell the difference between the PonoPlayer and an iPhone; and, if they could, which they preferred. The results were (A) that most people couldn't detect much difference, (B) when they could detect differences, they slightly preferred the sound from the iPhone, and (C) they didn't really care about the slight sound differences, and did not think the difference was worth paying for.

This is despite the purported advantages of the PonoPlayer system - more data in the sound file, better electronic components, etc - and also despite the fact that numerous big name musicians, such as Neil Young and Tom Petty, have gone on record saying the PonoPlayer sounds dramatically better.

Thus, the "Emperor Has No Clothes" headline.

Now, let me venture some guesses, theories, opinions, and lessons from this.

First: In regard to the claim that the music files for the PonoPlayer are less compressed / not compressed than the currently popular music formats, and therefore the music is higher resolution, and the claim that the electronic components are capable of better fidelity - I'm guessing those claims are true. If they are true, then the "Emperor Has No Clothes" headline seems somewhat misleading / off-base. Furthermore, the veracity of these claims should be fairly easy for those with an electrical engineering background and a software engineering background to determine, but the article gives no indication that such an investigation was done. To say "The Emperor Has No Clothes" without assessing the technical merits of the claims would be rather sloppy journalism, in my estimation.

Second: In regard to claims by Neil Young, Tom Petty, David Crosby, James Taylor, Dave Matthews, etc., saying they could hear dramatically better sound quality with the PonoPlayer - I'm torn about whether I think this is true. On the one hand, they probably do have better training about sound quality, and more sophisticated ears. To draw an analogy (which I'll emphasize more, later), it's like professional photographers being more aware than non photographers of chromatic aberration, halos, posterization, over sharpening, blocked shadows and blown highlights, low resolution, etc., when looking at pictures. On the other hand, most career musicians have exposed themselves to dangerously loud music on a routine basis, and almost all of them are hard of hearing. Their inability to hear well certainly casts doubt on their ability to discern the PonoPlayer's quality differences. Tentatively, I'll grant that these rock stars truly could hear better sound quality with the PonoPlayer.

Then what happened? Why couldn't the tested people consistently hear the differences? Why would they slightly prefer the iPhone, if it had objectively lower resolution and / or worse fidelity? Why would they not care much about better sound quality, and not feel that it was worth paying for?

First, the flip side of what I mentioned above, the average listener is not trained to tune in to fine technical distinctions in resolution and fidelity. If technical issues are below a certain threshold, they'll be lost on the average listener. Meanwhile, these same technical issues might be magnified by the hyper-attuned audio sensibilities of professional musicians, so such differences might seem dramatic and apparent to them.

Second - and I'm going out on a limb with some wild guesses, here - it's easy to imagine several reasons why people would prefer the iPhone's sound, even if it truly does have objectively lower audio resolution and worse fidelity. For one thing many compression algorithms cause some "sharpening." For example, with photos, the JPEG compression algorithms slightly sharpen pictures. Similarly, it could be that the more compressed audio files on the iPhone are slightly sharper than the uncompressed PonoPlayer files. Have you ever seen how beginning photographers often greatly oversharpen photos? People like oversharpening. They like the way it makes pictures "pop!" Similarly, they probably like such sharpening with audio clarity, and the more compressed file format may provide some such sharpening. For another thing, I would not be surprised if the iPhone's sound reproduction was optimized to sound pleasing to average listeners, and likewise if the PonoPlayer was optimized to sound accurate. The two are not necessarily the same thing. I'm reminded of when my friend Bill would get in front of the microphone for interviewing people; he would tinker with the knobs on the sound system and make his voice sound deep and smooth and resonant. He was striving for "pleasing," not for "accurate." To give an analogy with photography: Almost everybody prefers oversaturated colors over life-like colors, and almost everybody oversaturates their colors. When seeing and hearing recordings, we perceive them differently than seeing things in real life, and (for many people), recorded experiences need more emphasis and more "oomph" for them to seem "lifelike." So, if the PonoPlayer sounded accurate while the iPhone boosted the bass or some such, people might have preferred sound enhancements meant to please, over lifelike fidelity.

Third, as for why people didn't care, even when they could hear differences - I can only speak for myself, but I'm not an audiophile; in fact, I'm somewhat of the opposite. Not because I can't hear any difference between a $100 stereo and a $5,000 stereo. I can. But that difference doesn't make the music particularly more enjoyable for me. That's because the experience of the music occurs in my head, not in my ears. Thus, as long as the sound quality meets a modest standard, as long as I can hear the relationships of the notes to each other and the relationships of the instruments to each other - my brain will take care of the rest. All my ears need is for the content to be adequately conveyed. Beyond that, great emphasis on optimum sound is mostly frivolous. And I think that's the way it is for most people.

As for the larger lessons to be drawn from this: I see this as a bit of a morality tale about musicians with hyper-sensitized audio sensibilities getting a case of "gearhead disease" when it comes to the pursuit of sound fidelity, and assuming that the public hears sound quality the way they do - only to discover the public can't easily detect these technicalities, and doesn't generally care much about them. But the lesson goes beyond this one case. For example, it applies to Peter Jackson getting goofy over making films at 48 frames per second. It applies to every photographer who thinks they need a camera with 14 bit depth color instead of 12, every photographer who thinks they need a camera with an 11 stop dynamic range instead of 10, every photographer who thinks their 20 megapixel camera won't be able to compete with the coming 50 megapixel cameras - instead of staying focused on what they do with the cameras.

I'm not saying artists shouldn't take care to make the best they can. I'm just saying to let this be a reminder that most viewers barely notice the technical minutiae and don't really care much about it; instead, they focus on the content. Keep in mind what really matters and what doesn't. Especially when manufacturers announce new gear.___

This author's list of "12 worst" religious ideas is interesting. While I do find the ideas listed problematic, there are numerous other prime candidates for such a list, which I find equally concerning. I don't think I could narrow it down to a mere 12. To mention just a small sample of others that might belong on such a list: the idea that we are born reprobate, wicked, corrupt; vicarious sin; vicarious redemption; abnegation of life; the idea that there's a supernatural, evil force constantly tempting us, leading us astray, working against us, and that we are routinely encountering manifestations of this; the idea that God owns us, we are His slaves, and he has the right to do with us as He sees fit; the idea that we have no moral compass without God; the idea that morality equals God's command and obedience to God's command; the idea that "God did it"-type... more »

In a future printing of my book, Growing Up Humming, I might mention that the kind of seed pod the hummingbird nest is built upon is a sweet Hakea tree seed pod (Hakea suaveolens), and then include a photo of a sweet Hakea seed pod next to a cherry for size reference, and say that the nest is built on a seed pod about the size of a cherry. (I wouldn't necessarily use this photo; I have a bunch of photos of Hakea seed pods next to cherries.) Before I do this, I have a couple of questions:

1) Are cherries well known around the world, or would folks in most countries be unfamiliar with them?

2) Would you agree that using a cherry for size reference is better than using a quarter for size reference?

Thank you for your thoughts.

I strongly disagree with Pope Francis about this.

If someone believes cockamamie and harmful things for foolish reasons, invoking the word "faith" does not grant an automatic free pass.

Faith is not off the table for criticism, satire, or ridicule. Sometimes, such expression accords with the "obligation to say what he thinks in the name of the common good."

If one's faithistic sensibilities are so fragile that the faithful can't take the heat, that means they need to reexamine how they hold their faith; it does not mean that the contrarian may never legitimately speak against the faith.

In regard to Francis's notion that the limits of freedom of speech mean you should not cause offense, I think freedom of speech is most relevant where people find it troubling.

I must also note the hypocritical irony here, of him saying in one breath that you can't speak badly about people's religions, then in the next breath calling other people's religions "deviant" and "an aberration." ___

Here's another phone snapshot of a mushroom I saw during my walk in the woods, yesterday. I didn't take the time to thoroughly ID it, but I'm fairly sure this was an Amanita phalloides, one of the two most deadly poisonous kinds of mushroom in the world - a horrible way to die, over a two week period, as the poison shuts down your body's RNA synthesis. Pretty little things, though. ;-)

Since some falsely pious media whores are creating a hub bub over a supposed "War on Christmas," and since I'm the kind of outspoken atheist that these charlatans pretend to be concerned about, allow me to weigh in on the matter.

Personally, I'm not engaged in any war on Christmas. Furthermore, among the atheists I know, I have never encountered one who was anti-Christmas, nor even any who know anyone else who is anti-Christmas. Basically, the consensus of the atheist "community" is that the "War on Christmas," as some kind of actual movement, rather than the occasional isolated crank, is made up, and nonexistent.

It's true that I probably say "Happy Holidays" more often than I say "Merry Christmas." Apparently some people see this as a subtle attempt to undermine Christmas. I see it as simply a more sensible thing to say to the atheists, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Pagans, etc., that I know, as well as for people whose views I don't know.

I also must admit that I find most of the Frank Sinatra / Rosemary Clooney / Bing Crosby / José Feliciano type Christmas music that gets played constantly in every public establishment between Thanksgiving and Christmas to be crassly commercial, sentimental and manipulative, mostly artless, and occasionally creepy. Maybe I could get behind a war on the constant repetition of that schlock for a month straight. ;-)

Seriously, though - I like the traditions of getting together with loved ones, feasting and celebrating, and giving each other tokens of affection, just as much as everyone else. Everybody I know, including even the most antireligious, like these Christmas celebrations. Practically nobody has an agenda against Christmas, as far as I know.

I and other non-believers certainly have a number of points of contention with some fundamentalist Christians - such as their belief that I should be eternally tortured for disagreeing with their religious views, or their desire to force their religious beliefs on others through legislation. But a "War on Christmas"? Seriously? That would be preposterously picayune.

Merry Christmas!___

With Valentine's Day a mere 2 months away, some of you are probably wondering, "What's the most romantic thing you could do with your sweetheart to celebrate the occasion?" Luckily for you, I have a Valentine's Day suggestion that will really set you apart from everybody going on weekend getaways, or having candle-lit dinners.

February 14th will be the grand opening of the newly rebuilt Main Library in Palo Alto, and I will be there from 3-4 PM, giving a reading of my book (Growing Up Humming), answering your hummingbird questions, and signing books. Come join me, if you can.

You can purchase Growing Up Humming, online, if you would like to bring a copy and get it signed.

I'd pretty much completed all of the photos and writing I need for my next book, The Onshore Lives of Northern Elephant Seals – but there were still two particular photos more I wanted, to make the book just right. Today, I got one of those two. One more to go.

Soon....

Thank you, +Ramprakash R, for a great day.

Here's Miss B sitting at her desk, reading The Grumpy Guide to Life.

I've been enjoying making photos like this. I like showing the living spaces people make for themselves, in a way that gives insight about them, almost like exo-somatic portraits. I like showing people doing what they do. (Miss B reads a lot.) It's a fun challenge to make pictures so wide that they show just about everything in the scene, and yet trying to keep a sense of composition where everything is for a reason. (It's also fun to tackle the technical challenges of making perfectly stitched panoramas in tight indoor environments, with both near and far objects.) And I like trying to compose pictures that I can't "see," in the sense that they are wider than my field of view.

"I could not put it down! The photographs alone are priceless."

"Growing Up Humming is brilliant... He captures the maturation of two hummingbird chicks beautifully, so beautifully that I kept wondering, "How does he get these shots?" But it's not just the photography that's good. His accompanying text is aimed at a young audience, but I, as an adult, found it both entertaining and educational. Not only did it teach me a lot about Anna's hummingbirds, but it has a subtext about growing up, being taken care of by a parent, learning from her, and then becoming self-sufficient, that while plentifully clear wasn't at all heavy-handed."

"Breathtaking... Every time you look at the photos, you discover something new."

"As a parent, I completely identified with Mama bird. These photographs, along with the authors clear and informative story are a complete package."

"While it's marketed as a book for children, the writing strikes a fine balance of intelligence and simplicity in a way that adults will appreciate and children will understand."

"Really enjoyable and informative story, the visual artwork accompanying it is absolutely astonishing - I'd highly recommend this book to anyone!"

"A true work of art that any aged person may enjoy. The photography skills and knowledge of the author and photographer Mike Spinak is spectacularly displayed on each page. This is a book I will treasure for life and will share with my family."

"This is the kind of book which will fascinate and inspire children and their parents for generations."

"After flipping through a few pages, I was hooked. The photography and text are superb... I was blown away with the quality of the author's remarkable images. The book is being marketed primarily as a children's book, but in my opinion, it's just as appealing to grownups who love nature stories."

"Very often, books with photography can ignore the writing and be quite fascinating simply in pictures, but this book does not ignore the writing. Mike Spinak describes in detail the nesting material used to make the nest, and he details the stages of the hummingbird life cycle. Not only was I dazzled by the photographs, but I learned a lot about the life cycle of hummingbirds."

Thank you for your consideration.___

WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY
Curated by +Morkel Erasmus and +Mike Spinak

It's Wildlife Wednesday. Here's a mother Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) feeding a 15 day old chick, on the nest. I hope you enjoy it.

Remember that every Wednesday is Wildlife Wednesday. Post your pictures of wildlife. Do a search and look at other people's pictures of wildlife. Any wild creature will do. Big or small. From bugs to birds. All you have to do is post a wildlife picture, and mark it with #WildlifeWednesday

I hope to see a lot of your wildlife pictures. Show the wild animals you've encountered!

I read a lot of children's picture books as a tot; I've read a lot more to the kidlets in my life, and a lot more still as I've journeyed along the path of becoming a children's book author. Here are some of my favorite children's books (not including the one I made), and some of my least favorite children's books. These lists are not exhaustive, and they're in no particular order.

Of course, your own tastes might differ from mine.

Some Favorites:
Cathedral, by David Macaulay
Spring is Here, by Taro Gomi
The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein
The Awdrey-Gore Legacy, by Edward Gorey
Olivia, by Ian Falconer
A Special Trick, by Mercer Mayer
Apple Farmer Annie, by Monica Wellington
Letters from A Lost Uncle, by Mervyn Peake
Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth
The Lorax, by Dr. Suess

Flickr is selling photographers' no-restriction Creative Commons licensed photos without remunerating the photographers. It's legal for them to do, but it's uncouth, and exemplifies perfectly why I've stopped supporting Flickr and their parent company, Yahoo! – as I've discussed previously (such as here: https://plus.google.com/+MikeSpinak/posts/PKNjo4sox4d ).

I must note that I don't think Flickr is solely to blame, here. The photographers who put their pictures up with licenses that they can be used for free, without restriction, should've expected such usage. Any of them who were taken by surprise by this – hopefully they will read the licenses and think more carefully about agreeing, next time.

If Flickr has at times been somewhat negligent in regard to their care of filtering pictures by how they're licensed ... that could make this potentially concerning even for those who did not put up pictures with no restriction CC licenses.

Fortunately, I've only put pictures on Flickr at rather small sizes, even besides avoiding no restriction licenses.___

I've seen this posted a number of times. While I can appreciate the humor, the "science" is way off.

The farthest star that most people can see with unaided eyesight is Deneb, which is less than 3,000 light years away. Meanwhile, stars tend to last much longer than that. Our sun is about 4.5 billion years old, and stars the size of our sun tend to live about 10 billion years. Red dwarf stars can last up to 10 trillion years. Even the shortest lasting blue giant stars last for many millions of years.

Don't give up on your dreams, and don't let social media memes mislead you about science.  :-)

PSA for Dog Owners

I love all dogs. I wish I could say the same about their owners.

I'm amazed at how inconsiderate many dog owners are, both toward their dogs, and toward everyone and everything else. Not all dog owners, of course – but far too many. Since so many dog owners seem clueless, I'll spell out a few things dog owners should try to avoid doing.

1) Getting a big dog that needs lots of space, and then keeping it cooped up all the time in a small apartment with no yard.

2) Letting your big dog run up to every stranger in public and sniff her or his crotch.

3) Taking your easily-overstimulated dog to a stimulating environment, then harshly jerking it around on a leash with a spiked choke collar, to keep it under control.

4 B) Alternatively, taking your dog to a wildlife preserve where it's not allowed on trails, then taking it on a trail anyway, while all the wildlife evacuate the area as the dog approaches.

5) Letting your dog crap in your neighbors' yards.

6) Leaving your anxious dog at home while it howls hysterically all day long.

7) Letting your dog chew up and destroy public property.

8) Not reining in your barking and growling dog on its 20 foot leash while passing strangers on a narrow sidewalk or path.

9) Scolding and punishing your dog all the time for being a dog and behaving according to its dog nature.

10) Letting your dog off its leash at the park and encouraging it to chase the ducks, geese, squirrels, lizards, etc..

11) Disposing of your dog at the pound over trivial inconveniences, as though you never committed to making the dog a true family member when you adopted it.

If you own a dog, or are thinking of getting one, please be better than this.

Thank you.___
