I'm back from a trip through New Zealand since one week now and I figured it's time to post one of the photos I've taken there. This is the view from Mount Roy near Wanaka. One of the best I had this year. November was very stormy with a lot of changing weather in New Zealand. While this ruined many photo opportunities it also created some great light shows. Here I happened to be in the right spot.

This is insane. You have to watch it even if you're not interested in archery. If you would see this in a hollywood movie you'd think how unrealistic this it... but actually the archery in most hollywood movies is quite lame compared to this ;-)

This photo shows part of the Franz Josef glacial valley with the Franz Josef Glaciar slowly dissapearing in the descending clouds. It was a very atmospheric evening, with deep hanging clouds and some drizzle. Not many people were there, which was a great contrast to the following day when the sun was shining. I really enjoyed photographing the various waterfalls and the valley that evening although there was no spectacular light as I had hoped.

Processing this photo involved my typical workflow + my dreamy photo techniques to control the contrasts and preserve the atmosphere. I show all my techniques in my post processing video tutorials -> "http://mibreit-photo.com/tutorials.html

I just love how many details I get from the 5Ds-R even with my older lenses. Here's an example taken with the Canon 70-200 f/4 IS Lense. It was a longtime exposure at f/9.5. The image was presharpened with Nik Presharpener as usual.

I hope I don't bore you too much with the crops. I guess this will be the last one for now ;-)

In my last post I showed you some 100% crops of a Lavender Field I shot with the 5Ds-R. This time I want to give you a real-world example of what this camera is capable of in terms of dynamic range. There was a lot of discussion about this topic, especially since Sony and Nikon have so much exposure latitude in the dark tones. #Canon was never really good at it, the problem were mostly ugly noise patterns showing up when pushing the darktones and also a lot of color noise was present.

I admit the 5Ds-R still can't compete with the Sony Sensor here, but it's a big improvement over the Mark II or Mark III I think. Take this shot here for example. On the left I show a 100% crop of a totally underexposed patch of dark mass from the unprocessed raw. The crop on the right is what I could retrieve without introducing noise. It is also presharpened and part of the finished photo, which involved... more »

I wouldn't need more here for a natural look of the photo.

Thanks to my local camera store (Fotomax Nürnberg) I received a 5DS-R one day before my trip to France three weeks ago. Because of the few R models which were shipped in the beginning I was quite glad to get one.

I'll do some real review sometime in the future when I have used the camera a bit more. But for those interested here's a little close up of a photo I took near Valensole during a nice soft sunrise.

I was using the 16-35mm f/4 here and also applied focus-stacking while shooting at f/11. I have to admitt that f/11 is not the best f-stop for the 5Ds-R. While there was no diffraction when using f/11 on my 5D Mark II on the 5Ds-R the sharpness already drops a bit. To the end of the trip I mostly went with f/9.5. But still, f/11 produced quite some nice details here.

You can also see that while the 16-35 lens is very good in the corners when shot on a 22mpix camera, on the 5Ds-R the corners are noticably softer, despite the focus-stacking.

I really had to work very careful with this beast and I also screwed a few shots because of a lot of haze during the trip and some focusing, which wasn't quite perfect. But screwed here means the 100% view isn't perfect. If I size down to say 24mpix the photos looks good again. So it's quite nice having all those mpix :-)

But best is to no screw the shots, than printing at 60'' or 70'' should be no problem.

PS: in case your wondering, the 100% crops have Nik-Presharpener at default settings applied.

I still have lots of photos from New Zealand to process. Here is another view from Roys Peak. It was taken on my way back down. You find this location around 150 meters below the real peak. As the last light hit the mountains I had to grab my camera one last time befor continuing my descend.

If you are interested in the post processing behind this photo, please have a look at my tutorials. All the involved techniques are covered there -> http://www.mibreit-photo.com/tutorials.html
