Praia da Adraga - On my second day in the Sintra area it cleared after some heavy rainfall, which didn't feel like Portugal at all. Just in time for sunset the sun burst through the clouds and I was ready to photograph it on one of my favourite beaches.

Benagil - If you ever plan to visit the Algarve and are looking for a great place to stay, Benagil is such a place. I don't know how it is in the main season, I guess it might be very crowded but probably the whole Algarve is. But in October it was great there. There are many spectacular views and beaches in walking distance, further beaches are just a short drive away. A beautiful coastal walk goes along the cliffs at Benagil too. And a great boat tour through the sea caves starts in Benagil - one highlight of our trip.

Needless to say that one week at the Algarve was much too short :-)

Marinha Night - If you look a bit back through the Portugal folder here, you'll find a short from this exact spot, which I took two days later with a fantastic sunrise. Here I didn't get much good light for sunrise but during astronomical Twilight I captured this long exposure.

Natural History Museum - This incredible museum has free entry and if you ever visit London you should plan in a day to explore. In the photo you see the main hall. I used a long exposure here to remove the masses of people. Although no tripods are allowed you can carefully place your camera on the balustrade to achieve this effect.

Westminster Storm - Imagine how happy I was to photograph this incomming storm from the perfect viewpoint in London back in 2014. There is a bus station just a few 100 meters to the right of the frame so I could easily time the busses driving into the frame. I'll soon post a few more photos from this evening.

Westminster Classic - In summer 2014 I visited London for four days. It was my third visit allready and the previous visits hadn't been very productive in terms of photography. But this time I scored quite a decent portfolio, which I'll share in this selection over the next weeks.

Yesterday I edited my first little GoPro video ever. It shows some impressions of a fun boat tour through the caves near Benagil. With photography I'm kind of a perfectionist, with videos I try to keep things a little bit more raw. Else I would never upload a video I guess ;-)

Cabo Raso Storm - Another photo from the coastline near Lisbon. I always loved this rough stretch of coast near Cascais, with the jagged rocks breaking the incomming waves and the lighthouse facing the sea like a sentinel. After some rain showers had passed through I was able to capture this gloomy atmosphere. You really have to look at it on a dark background.

Today I commented on a video by Tony Northrup (https://youtu.be/YcZkCnPs45s) where one point he makes is that polarizers are useless in most situations. Take a blue sky for example, put on a polarizer and you can ruin your photo through the uneven effect of the polarizer. I totally agree with this!

Also reducing glare on surfaces is not always what you want. Also agree with this.

But there are situations where I don't want to miss my polarizer. Those often occur when shooting in forests, when shooting streams or waterfalls. As I do this quite a lot the Polarizer is still one of my most important filters.

I didn't find many compairson images in my archive since I normally only keep the photos I use in the final image. But below I show an example, where the Polarizer really helped to improve the scene.

To the left you see one of my test shots (I know it's a bad comp). Top is with Polarizer, bottom without. The light filtering through the trees created some heavy reflections here. The polarizer was the cure for it and I was able to get a decent photo (right) on that day :-)___

Alfanzina Storm - Another place close to Benagil is Alfanzina Lighthouse and the surrounding cliffs. I was there on a stormy evening and had this wonderfull light just before clouds and rain moved in from the sea. This cauldron you see below we went through two days later by boat. The cave in the middle goes completely through the rock. Awesome! I have to add that on our boat tour the waves weren't as ferrocious as in the photo here ;-)

Praia da Ursa - I think awe inspiring is no overstatement when describing this beach. Walking down the steep track is already an experience by itself. But standing on this rocky shore beneath giant sea stacks is just awesome. The great light didn't happen that evening but I still had a lot of fun capturing the waves.

PS: if you are interested in my post processing techniques, I have a very detailed set of tutorials available: http://www.mibreit-photo.com/tutorials.html

Since I now have four tutorials and more than 6 hours of video in total in my payloadz store I thought it was a good idea to create a bundle including all the tutorials. So if you haven't bought any of my tutorials yet and want to make the leap, this might be a good option, it's worth it!

Castelo dos Mouros - October was the perfect time to visit the Castelo dos Mouros in Sintra and photograph it during sunset. The opening hours still allowed it since the main season goes till Oct. 24th and the castel was open till 8pm, while sunset was around 7pm.

It took me some time to find a good perspective which included parts of the wall, a wide view towards the Sintra landscape and the setting sun. But I'm quite happy with how it came out.

Marinha Dawn - This one should not be left out of my Portugal Collection. It was the best sunrise I ever photographed. I was trying to get this shot for one week and just the day before we left Portugal everything fit together. I had refined the comp I wanted to shoot the days before so the setup in the dark was kind of automated already. Then I just waited and 45 minutes before sunrise it began. I couldn't believe how intense the sky was glowing. An awesome moment I'll never forget.

I also have this one available as print or phone case, if anybody is interested ;-) -> http://www.redbubble.com/people/mibreit/works/17171960-marinha-dawn

Cabo Raso - This photo shows the Cabo Raso Lighthouse near Cascais on a stormy morning. It marks the southern edge of the Sintra coastline which I so like four it's diversity. You have wide beaches there, dunes, rocky stretches, sea stacks or cliffs rising more than 100 meters from the see.

The light was very dynamic this morning as the rainclouds moved over the lighthouse. Also the sea was rough enough this morning so I could capture some nice water action.

This photo again shows Praia da Adraga, this time in the morning roughly an hour before sunrise. If you look closely you can still see some stars in the sky.

With the tide getting higher and higher for sunrise and sunset within the week I stayed in the Sintra area I got different shooting opportunities everytime I visited.

A photo from my trip to the Provence back in July. I didn't see many clouds during the two weeks I was in southern france. I also picked some of the hottest days of this summer here in Europe ;-) Anyways the Valensole Plateau is an awesome place. Lavender fields wherever you look and if you get up early you have them mostly for yourself.

I said I wouldn't post more 100% Crops of the 5ds-r for a time. But there was a discussion over at +Olaf Bathke site about it. +Cole Thompson who does some great long exposure photography also bought the 5Ds-R some time back and he found some serious noise issues for exposures of several minutes. See his blog post here:

http://www.photographyblackwhite.com/canon-5dsr-noise-issues/

I also did some long exposure photography on my recent trip to France and my impression was that the 5Ds-R copes very well with long exposures. If shooting less than one or two minutes I never had issues with noise, even without Long Exposure Noise Reduction. Comming from the 5D Mark II I was used to using the LNR for long exposure, because the noise became quite apparent, if I went into the direction between 5 and 10 minutes -> hot pixels everywhere.

Below you see some crops of a photo I took before sunrise in Verdon Canyon (https://500px.com/photo/118144837/verdon-moon-by-michael-breitung). I think it was allready around 20°C and I took two shots between 7 and 8 minutes. One shot I took without LNR turned on (Crops in first row). Because I didn't have much experience with the 5Ds-R I repeated the shot right afterwards with slightly adjusted ISO settings (Crops in second row). This time I had LNR turned on - this basically doubles the time you have to wait for the finished photo to popup up on the back of the camera and if the light is changing fast it's not always an option.

So lets look at the crops:

Upper left: I tried to exposed properly to the right but with the DR of the scene this still gave me some quite dark shadows. Mind I had the moon in the photo and I tried to also keep the bright parts. Without pushing the darks I don't see much noise there, for me this is acceptable for an ISO 200 shot of more than 8 minutes.

Upper middle: same crop with shadows set to + 100 in LR. Nothing else changed. Here you can see some dot noise. No real manifestation of the blue or red hot pixels but still not all too clean. But it's really not that much and I think I could have cleaned this a bit and been ok

Upper right: here's a crop showing some middle tones, also with shadows + 100. I see no issues here.

Lower left: I took this shot directly after the first. I went down with the ISO a bit since it was getting brighter but while taking the exposure I decided to slightly lengthen it since more clouds were crepping in front of the moon. The crop is again with shadows set to + 100 in LR. Here I shot with LNR turned on and this totally eliminates the strange dot noise. For me this looks quite clean.

Lower middle: this is a crop of the final developed photo. I usually end up with a slightly darker shot than what I start with. From raw I try to get as much image info as possible and then I try to recreate the atmosphere as it was. If you look at this crop on a dark background you see the detail there. But mind that this is from the edge of the frame, so you won't get as many details as in the middle at 100% due to restrictions of the lense, which was the Canon 16-35 f/4. Also due to lense correction and some cropping the crop is slightly different than the others.

Lower left: crop of final images for the middle tones.

I will do further tests in the future but my experience till now is that the 5Ds-R will serve me very well.___

The 5DsR is quite capable for long exposures. Here a shot I took at Canyon du Verdon. 9 Minutes exposure at ISO 160

I just love how many details I get from the 5Ds-R even with my older lenses. Here's an example taken with the Canon 70-200 f/4 IS Lense. It was a longtime exposure at f/9.5. The image was presharpened with Nik Presharpener as usual.

I hope I don't bore you too much with the crops. I guess this will be the last one for now ;-)

In my last post I showed you some 100% crops of a Lavender Field I shot with the 5Ds-R. This time I want to give you a real-world example of what this camera is capable of in terms of dynamic range. There was a lot of discussion about this topic, especially since Sony and Nikon have so much exposure latitude in the dark tones. #Canon was never really good at it, the problem were mostly ugly noise patterns showing up when pushing the darktones and also a lot of color noise was present.

I admit the 5Ds-R still can't compete with the Sony Sensor here, but it's a big improvement over the Mark II or Mark III I think. Take this shot here for example. On the left I show a 100% crop of a totally underexposed patch of dark mass from the unprocessed raw. The crop on the right is what I could retrieve without introducing noise. It is also presharpened and part of the finished photo, which involved... more »

I wouldn't need more here for a natural look of the photo.

Thanks to my local camera store (Fotomax Nürnberg) I received a 5DS-R one day before my trip to France three weeks ago. Because of the few R models which were shipped in the beginning I was quite glad to get one.

I'll do some real review sometime in the future when I have used the camera a bit more. But for those interested here's a little close up of a photo I took near Valensole during a nice soft sunrise.

I was using the 16-35mm f/4 here and also applied focus-stacking while shooting at f/11. I have to admitt that f/11 is not the best f-stop for the 5Ds-R. While there was no diffraction when using f/11 on my 5D Mark II on the 5Ds-R the sharpness already drops a bit. To the end of the trip I mostly went with f/9.5. But still, f/11 produced quite some nice details here.

You can also see that while the 16-35 lens is very good in the corners when shot on a 22mpix camera, on the 5Ds-R the corners are noticably softer, despite the focus-stacking.

I really had to work very careful with this beast and I also screwed a few shots because of a lot of haze during the trip and some focusing, which wasn't quite perfect. But screwed here means the 100% view isn't perfect. If I size down to say 24mpix the photos looks good again. So it's quite nice having all those mpix :-)

But best is to no screw the shots, than printing at 60'' or 70'' should be no problem.

PS: in case your wondering, the 100% crops have Nik-Presharpener at default settings applied.
