Seems like recently my favorite way of spending evening is by sitting on the pavement and watching Dubai Fountain shows, all while sipping ice cappuccino (btw. you can get a fantastic one just opposite the At The Top ticket counter. Word of warning though: it's very addictive!). Anyway, every time I look up I can't help but be amazed how unbelievably fantastic piece of architecture the Burj Khalifa is...

So there you go. One for you to enjoy and share. This was taken yesterday on a very hot'n'sweaty evening.

Long time no see...

  While most  users are debating about the new look of G+, to me much more important  is that it can finally (almost) load up on my weak satellite link. I do understand and appreciate that Google has a lot of data to handle, but frankly so does FB and trust me, in that aspect it beats G+ big time...
  Anyway, this was one of those fantastic starry nights on the Mediterranean. The blur is caused by ship's movement and I just love the surreal and otherworldly mood it creates. 
  Have a great Sunday folks! I hope I'll be able to post a bit more often...

Still learning to use speedlights... This is SB 910 Master flash on camera with dome diffuser on as fill light and second SB 910 as main light with 1/4 CTO on a paint pole camera right. Quite pleased with result...   :-)

Hopeless...
Why such name? I'm sure you know this feeling, when you work on a pic and the longer you do the more it seem to be going nowhere? This is one of those. It's just... well, hopeless!   ;-)

Nevermind. It was a good exercise. It's 5 exposures manually blended using luminosity masking (+Tony Kuyper  's way), then with gazillion of local adjustments with curves layers in luminosity blend mode. Final color restored in Lab mode. Details extracted with High-Pass in Overlay mode, partly masked for the sea (too many details there). Sharpening on two separate layers with classic USM in luminosity blend mode with twice as much strength for shadows than lights. No plugins were harmed in creation of this image.

Special Print Sale - Let's Help Jaime - PLEASE SHARE

As some of you know, our dear friend and a very talented photographer +Jaime Ibarra has been hurting in a big way ... together we can put him back together! 

Jaime needs an operation for an umbilical hernia El PRONTO! Like most creative artists he does not have health insurance & is too damn proud to ask for assistance. His friend +Gretchen Chappelle made a promise to him last year that she'd see to it we all chip in and get him sorted out. 

After getting evaluated by the doctor, it turns out Jaime needs $5,000 for his surgery. Around Christmas time we started collecting donations from photography community for that sum. We've made a good progress, but we're not there quite yet.

Focus shmocus... I still prefer this one. Not only that it didn't take up looong time in PS like the previous one did, but because it simply looks well... more natural. The focus stacked version is like an illustration from an encyclopedia, this one has more intimate feel. Then again, matter of taste...

Unexpected guest
Trying to grab some nice pic of sunset this evening, as I haven't got one for quite some time, but it turned to be nothing special. Then I saw this little dragonfly flying around the bridge, trying to find a spot to sleep. A few drinks later she agreed for a shoot, but I never got her to sign the release.... duh!  

Technically this was a bit challenging: Nikon D800 with Sigma 105 Macro lens, two strobes, main unit on camera with diffusion dome attached to soften the shadows, second unit off camera with Rogue Diffuser on it. Four exposures in manual mode for focus stacking. Given that I'm on the ship that is vibrating like hell and rolling left and right AND I handheld the camera... I'm pretty stoked about the result actually!

It's been a year...
Yep, I took this shot a year ago, but it feels like last week. Time flies when you're having fun some say. I'd say time flies regardless, so go and have fun... I've learned a ton of useful stuff thanks to you guys and it has been fun. I wish I could post more of the new stuff and more often, but I'm quite busy and finding time to sleep has been some challenge recently. Anyway, the adventure continues!

On Community

I realize communities are new and things are still evolving and working themselves out and that there will be tweaks and refinements.  I understand that many people have misunderstood the purpose and use of communities.  I know we’re only a couple days in.
That said, when communities were announced, I wrote on +Ron Clifford's  post:
“I do hope, though, that this does not devolve into cliques and dilute the main experience and community. I would hate to see fracturing and elitism replacing the greater experience."

One of the great things about G+, the thing that drew me in and held me was the sense of a greater community of artists and visionaries and thinkers coming together and allowing for a unified experience.  Circles were and are the best and most innovative part of G+.  It was fantastic because you can tailor that experience whenyou wanted... more »

So I've opened the G+ to see what's the fuss about. First thoughts - Great. Finally. We have communities. Then I've clicked on the "NEW" Communities icon. What happened afterwards is somewhat puzzling and very disconcerting... I see Treys everywhere!!!   WTF???  First page displayed listed 12 communities with little picture of Trey Ratcliff in the corners. Bloody hell, you need to start Running dude. It looks off without your pic there...

Saturn V
Another one from my yesterday's visit at the Space Center. Perhaps not the best composition or lighting, but I just love the dynamics created by those huge engines with that little girl scrambling up the handrail and an elderly man absorbing the view. The Age, the youth, the greatness, the young and the retired, the eager and the humble, the naive and the wise. It's all there. For this one passing moment... This is us, our live and our achievements, our future and our past.

Space Center Houston
Just like many other young kids I also wanted to be an astronaut at some point. It didn't last long, but the curiosity remained. I've always been amazed by the technical aspects of space travel. Sheer amount of knowledge and engineering required to put people in Space and recover them safely is just mind blowing... No surprise then that faced with unexpected extra day in Texas City I've decided to finally go and visit the NASA Johnson Space Center.
Was it worthy you may ask? Well it's not a theme park of the same kind like the Universal Studios in Hollywood, so some may be disappointed, but you have to remember that this is not about some fictional stories and characters that were created to entertain. Houston, we have no problems!
Beautiful Moon over Houston area last night, gave an opportunity to capture this rather unique scene. It was a bit tricky to remain motionless for 15 seconds and there is some motion blur visible, but overall I'm quite happy with result. 
Shot with Nikon D800 and 14-24 lens using self-timer. Processing in LR 4.2.

Fourth of Two
The weather turned a bit on a US Gulf's waters and what was a nice and calm is now getting a bit windy. Quite often such weather is announced by interesting clouds. Add the Sun to it and you might just end up with rather spectacular sunset...

Technicalities: Nikon D800 with 14-24mm f2.8 lens set to 14mm and f:7.1, single exposure, handheld, ISO 200, shutter speed 1/320s to eliminate any chance for shake/blur. 

This camera has such wide dynamic range, that quite often I find bracketing being not necessary. Even with scenes like this one I'm able to get all the details from just a single exposure. As to how exactly I go about it, I'm going to refer you to the very source: +Tony Kuyper has written some of the best tutorials there are and if you're not the reading kind then turn to +Sean Bagshaw and you'll get pretty much the same qualityin... more »
