The "fish" pond out back..
This spring there's no fish, last year the Herons and Racoons cleaned us out!
I made the mistake a couple years back of planting those lilies in the middle, which became a landing platform for Blue Herons to fish from.
You can see that some of them are flattened out this spring, probably by herons. Nothing to eat but water striders at the moment, although we've had native crayfish in the pond as well.
I'll be buying some more "feeder goldfish" when it gets a little warmer and restock the pond.
A couple years ago I woke up one summer Saturday morning and heard racoons out in the pond chattering away at each other.
I quickly got dressed and out there to see a mom in the pond and three cubs watching from the shore as mom demonstrated her fishing techniques.
I grabbed the gard... more »

Facepalm..
Economic lesson in play.
When self driving cars become mainstream (probably by being so much safer that insurance rates will plummet for them) here's one group that will oppose them wholeheartedly..

This is a shot of a cafe/bar that has a doorway through the castle wall out to the ocean. I didn't get a chance to try it out unfortunately..

No. I. Am. Not. Not upgrading to the top of the line looper pedal. Not.
I don't spend near enough time with the one I do have.
(This is a very creative use of a looper pedal, by the way!)

In the '80s I took a course on broadcast video at Ampex in Silicon Valley, and wandered through their museum. They had a couple old Nazi real to real recorders, and of course the story of how Bing Crosby invested in Ampex.
Apparently the Allies could not understand how Hitler got around so fast to give speeches all over Germany. Tapes were send instead and broadcast on radio..
Fascinating museum.. I wonder if it's still there in Redwood City?

Well, maybe. CPU power is certainly (still) doubling every 18 months, but software development hasn't..

Some very cool lighting products! (the bad news, they're pricey and mostly 220 V).. They have some great steampunk style work..

Garden fencing at Burnaby Lake park.
This is what I need to do in my back yard to separate my garden patch from the "lawn" area..

Gnarly tree, dude!
Since I signed up to play Google's "Ingress" game, and a handful of my portals got accepted at Burnaby Lake park, I've been hanging around the park at lunch in this great weather.

People are still arguing the specifics, but several different article lately are showing that Solar Power is about to match, then become cheaper than coal and natural gas fired electric plants, at least partially thanks to Germany and China for taking Solar Power seriously.
2015, plus or minus.
Since the old guard power utilities are already starting to complain that solar and wind are eating into their profits, there must be something to this..

I'm starting to think the name Poppy is meaningful.
Yesterday I had one, today there are three.
I've never seen one in between the fuzzy pod state and full bloom...

Aha,
Google have an online converter to take any panorama shot and turn it into a photosphere shot.
http://photo-sphere.appspot.com/?
I converted my White Rock beach panorama to a photosphere..
It's a little warped, and I'm not sure there are enough controls to "fix" it, but it's a start!
Try one of yours +J.C. Kendall :)

I decided to try out the Galaxy S3 panorama mode after seeing some of +J.C. Kendall 's examples..
Here's yesterday's view at White Rock beach. Vancouver Island off to the right, the San Juan's in the middle and the Semiahmoo Peninsula to the left.
When it's really clear you can just see the mountains on the Olympic Peninsula out behind the San Juan's..

I would like something like these for the restaurant, but I need it about two or three times wider, and my feeling is these are too expensive. If I could find those black metal frames I could build my own glass rack and shelf custom fit to my space for a lot less cash..

The primary reason why I find this experiment to be so bloody useful is because it may finally offer us some real insights into what gravity is.
At this point we know a heck of a lot more about anti-matter than we do about gravity, the latter's knowledge mostly limited to observations and poking around theories such as that of the Higgs field.

So, I ordered an "oddball" circuit breaker from Amazon.com and when it showed up, I discovered it was used, and that it was missing parts.
Of course the seller has a "No Return" policy.
I left a negative review hoping to at least warn others off of the vendor but Amazon rejected my review.
It's negative, but fairly tame.
For what it's worth, I'd say don't buy from Amazon.com in general, there seems to be no legitimate avenue to complain about a seller.
Here is my negative review for Connecticut Electric, and really for Amazon in general. +Amazon.com Get Stuffed.

3 down, dozens to go..
When we first got this property the previous owner advised us to cut off last year's growth from the ferns in the spring before the new growth started up.
Of course we ignored the advice since the last year's growth was still nice and green.
But as soon as the new leaves are established the old ones die off and turn brown, and if you want the dead ones out you have to trim each one out without damaging too much of the new growth.
(The last photo shows two year old dead leaves, last year's green ones and this year's new leaves in the fiddlehead stage)
This year we're more than a little busy so it's too late to take the hedge trimmer to them.
Cutting them out one at a time. Kind of Zen though..

A very handy programmer's web site: http://rosettacode.org/
I needed a sleep function in the embedded software language used at the office (Forth.. don't ask..) and landed on this page via search.
Excellent!
Examples of many tasks/functions implemented and cross referenced by hundreds of programming languages.
They have a spot for VHDL and Verilog but no contributions..
I was thinking it might be interesting to add a couple.
