GMO is a marketing term. Is a natural hybrid a GMO? What about a hybrid that could never happen without human intervention, through moving plants from place to place, or storing pollen for days weeks or months? What if the two plants naturally use different pollenaters and the insect that collects the pollen could not naturally pollenate the matching female flower?
Leaving hybridization behind, what about simple vegetative replication? Plants are amazingly easy to clone. Nearly every banana that we eat is from a clone plant that does not produce viable offspring through seeds. Add in grafting and you can also include nearly every tree crop we eat.
None of the plants produced by these means have a complete genome that could be found in ANY plant reproduced without human intervention. So any or all of these are "GMO"s. Some of which have been part of our foodst... more »

If you are at all able bodied, may I make a suggestion? Find a 5k or 10k or longer race this weekend. Run, Walk, Or Crawl. Write "Boston" on your shirt, or sleeve, or skin. Google "5K April 20", there are dozens of races.

Just posted to Trader Joe's Store Request form: Feel free to post something similar
http://www.traderjoes.com/about/location-requests-form.asp
"You really should open a location in the "Suburban Plaza" complex in Decatur Georgia. We are a middle class neighborhood with the perfect mix of income and purchasing habits to fit a Trader Joe's. We have a classic shopping center with an empty space where you would fit right it. It is far enough away from your far too busy midtown Atlanta location that there should not be any draw away from that location, in fact it might be just the right distance to help improve local buzz.
Please come take a look at Suburban Plaza. Let us buy your stuff!"

Is your site badly broken on touchscreen laptops? Here’s how to easily check without needing a touchscreen.
Many websites assume that when a browser supports touch events, there’s no need to listen to mouse events. Eg., I see this JavaScript all the time (eg. in the YUI library used on sites like zillow.com maps):
if (window.ontouchstart) {
// on a touch device - add touch event handlers
} else {
// not a touch device - add mouse event handlers
}
Devices with both a touchscreen and mouse have existed for a long time (eg. BlackBerry), but are becoming a much more common through touchscreen laptops. Many touchscreen laptop users consider their device to be a laptop FIRST which happens to have a touchscreen which they may (or may not) use for some tasks. These users get very grumpy when the fact that they ‘upgraded’ to a new laptop with a touchscreen... more »

Hey Recruiters,
Want to instantly get on my bad side? Cold call me twice in three minutes from the same unknown number so I walk out of a meeting thinking its an emergency.
Call me, great. If you get voice mail, leave me one. If I don't answer, give me a couple of hours to respond. If you ARE the most important thing on my plate, I am sure to get back to you in a few minutes. If not, you are hurting your reputation with me by being a pest.
Thank you.

"The science fiction and fantasy world has as one of its cornerstones the idea of 'pay it forward' – the idea that you help people, not for what you get out of it, but to help others so they may help those who come up after them."

"If only women voted, President Obama would be on track for a landslide victory". - Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight.
Please get out and vote, female citizens. You have far more to lose than I do as a white middle-class heterosexual married male.
If Romney wins, I won't really lose all that much personally. Sure, my taxes will have to go up a bit to pay for his tax breaks for white guys who are even better off than me, and more science and culture will drift over seas, and there will be fewer healthy, well educated Americans to enrich my society. But personal impact, really not all that horrible, considering what he wants to do to you.
He wants you to continue to be paid less than me, even if we are doing the same work in the same place.
He wants you to pay for the crime if you are the victim of a rape.

Please share if anyone can find this scoring of the "debate" last night:
1)Substantive points made by either candidate that are both true, and relatively new information.
2)Refutations of inaccuracies by the other side.
Each candidate gets two points for the the former and one point for the latter.

Boosting the signal.
"This is terrible,My Lovely Lady, Lady Kira Raven,(We live in Oklahoma).I am Lord Charles Raven, and I am currently on deployment in Afghanistan running convoys through the badlands. After we got married we lived in Germany where she sewed, and painted her own pavilion and worked at the army wood craft shop to make all the poles and the center wheel. She painted the pavilion blue and with a sun and stars design, it is freaking awesome. This morning she posted that someone stole our trailer full of our SCA equipment out of our yard, including this tent that she hand crafted and has had for years. If anyone knows anyone in Oklahoma, please share this around in case they see any SCA equipment or trailers.The trailer was a little red 2 wheel ,Box trailer with a pirate flag painted on one side, and our medieval crest painted on the other side."

You will see this pattern in all pro-Apple/Microsoft bloggers. They will build a case of being core Android/Linux user and then start bashing it how it doesn't work for them and how iOS, Mac or Windows work better. "I want to use Android/Linux but it just doesn't work".
How to Be a Denialist
POSTED BY MIKA | 1 JUN 2010 — PERMALINK
Epidemiologist Martin McKee has identified the following six tactics that denialist movements use.
Allege that there's a conspiracy. Claim that scientific consensus has arisen through collusion rather than the accumulation of evidence.
Use fake experts to support your story. "Denial always starts with a cadre of pseudo-experts with some credentials that create a facade of credibility," says Seth Kalichman of the University of Connecticut.
Cherry-pick the evidence: trumpet w... more »

I have scientifically determined that I MUST be on the road by 6:40am to miss the "Drive your Spawn to School" traffic. I left at 6:38 this morning, got to my parking space at 7:05. Yesterday left at 6:43 arrived at 7:20, Wednesday 6:52, arrive 7:45.
At 7:10, Montgomery Elementary arrivals begin, then at 7:30 Marist school adds their load. Ashford-Dunwoody is a parking lot for an hour after that. You can easily be passed TWICE by people walking their kids to school. Once as they are headed to the school, then again on the way back.

Advice to Media & Muslims: Don't Feed the Trolls
The jerk who made that video, the one that supposedly incited rioting and murder in Egypt and Libya, is the very definition of a troll: He made it to elicit the reaction he was sure he’d cause. That is what trolls do.
Those who reacted are trolls, too, but of course worse: murderers. They exploited just any excuse — an obviously cheesy, fake movie seen by no one — to stir up their band of fanatics into visible outrage and violence.
The media who cover these trolls — the trolls who make the bait and the trolls who look for bait — are dupes themselves, just continuing a cycle that will only rev faster and faster until someone says: Stop. Stop feeding the trolls.
We’ve learned that online, haven’t we all? Oh, I sometimes have to relearn the lesson when one of my trolls dangles some shiny object in fro... more »

The Mysterious Blanket Octopus
The blanket octopus is perhaps the only creature on earth aside from man that truly appreciates a sense of drama. For example, most animals use things like poisons, sprays or smells as defensive mechanisms to ward off attackers. Not the blanket octopus. The blanket octopus instead uses its giant, built-in flowing cloak to dissuade potential predators by essentially convincing them that it's the ocean's Batman
