Meteorites seen falling since 2500BC visualized

About 35,000 meteorites have been recorded since 2500 BC, and a little over 1,000 of them were seen while they fell. Cool bar chart shows the number and volume of meteorites that have been seen over time, and on the initial load, you get to watch the meteorites fall, one bright orange fireball at a time.

Ending poverty by 2030
http://goo.gl/ICBwt
While the future trajectory of global poverty is impossible to predict, the understanding of what it will take to eliminate poverty is growing. The challenge for the global community is to seize this knowledge so that the dream of achieving a poverty-free world becomes a reality.

The 40-year period from 1990 to 2030 resembles a relay race in which responsibility for leading the charge on global poverty reduction passes between these three giants.

China’s relay leg is the most striking. It undergoes a dramatic transformation in which its population, which is initially predominantly poor, disperses over a range of consumption levels beyond the poverty line, driven by rapid, though often inequitable, consumption growth.

The Best Places to Fly This Summer
http://goo.gl/KnD6d
Airline ticket prices for summer travel to Tampa, Fla., New York, Denver and Washington, D.C., have fallen, after steep increases for several consecutive years, according to Orbitz.com. The average ticket already purchased for summertime flights to Chicago is down more than 18% from the same period last year. Tickets bought for Honolulu are 10% cheaper than those bought during the same stretch of 2012. Lots of domestic destinations have seen soft demand and the biggest price drops have been in cities with more discount-carrier service than years before.

The problems facing our world are so large that they demand disruptive thinking. We don't have time to think in incremental terms. It's time to challenge the status quo, and dare to imagine what we can do.

The futuristic Rebellion T-1000 Gotham Watch
http://goo.gl/rcqhh I'm not a watch guy but the Rebellion T-1000 Gotham watch is something I would wear. The main working mechanism is controlled via the 6 barrels bound together via the 2 finely tuned chains that bind them together, and help distribute the energy on a continuous basis with accuracy. The winding lever is an enlarged component of this mysterious movement, that the winding force is increased by more than 10 times the average of other mechanical movements. That is the reason why such high levels of energy get generated in a single winding, which results in the 1,000 hours of power reserve to run the engine of the watch with such accuracy.

Literally Billions
http://goo.gl/m59Rf
Last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the world’s population topped seven billion, and now stands at approximately 7,077,490,000 as of noon Eastern, April 9, 2013. Did you know that every human being on the Earth, packed tightly, would fit inside a 900-meter diameter sphere?

However, had you wanted to experience the world’s population in its most primitive form – a single Web page featuring seven-billion-plus faces, dots, or whatever – yesterday, your search would’ve turned up bupkis.

That’s a dot for every man, woman, and child alive today, indexed to the nearest million per Census Bureau estimates. Arranged similarly, in real life, these seven gigapeople would cover the entire state of Rhode Island.

And while China now imports most of its wine from France, Australia, and the US, Hannah predicts the Chinese could be sipping more home-grown wine within a few decades.

If Facebook Made Houses, Here's What They'd Look Like
With Facebook's new "Home," app that swaps out the standard home screen for a Facebook-centric interface. The news—and somewhat misleading name—inspired the folks over at The Joy of Tech to craft some highly technical and thoroughly peer-reviewed blueprints of what an actual Facebook 'home' might look like, and, well, let's just say it's nothing like actual houses of Facebook's honchos, nor the Gehry-designed sprawl of the company's forthcoming campus.

Food companies know how our brains work in a grocery store, and they pay big money for good placement.

Coca-Cola's research team showed that people tend to move counterclockwise through supermarkets, from back to front — so eye-catching soda displays will be in the front right of the store to catch your attention when you go in, and main racks of soda should be at the rear right of the store.

Located in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, this gorgeous tree-lined street is said to be the most beautiful street in the world. Planted 70 years ago by German employees in a former brewery site, one hundred tipuana trees stretch approximately 500 meters. In 2005, some of the trees were almost cut down to make a room for a shopping mall, however, local residents forced the mayor José Fogaça to sign a decree making the street of Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho “historical, cultural and environmental heritage of the city.”

Men’s Falling Incomes Linked to Single Parents
http://goo.gl/5FTmc
Based on a new study that shows men are earning less because more of them are raised by single mothers. Roughly 63% of children surveyed lived in a house with two parents in 2010, a stark contrast to the 82% who lived in two-parent households in 1970, and usually the single parent raising the children is female. Evidence increasingly shows that men raised by single mothers appear to fare particularly poorly.

To get a sense of how men and women are portrayed on the large and small screen, researchers analyzed 11,927 speaking parts from three sources: 129 top-grossing family films (rated PG-13 or lower) released from 2006 to 2011, 275 prime-time programs from 2012 (from 10 broadcast and cable channels), and 36 kids’ programs that aired on PBS, Nickelodeon, or Disney in 2011. The analysis indicated that women are underrepresented as characters in speaking roles, as well as narrators.

The hexagonal shape of Alert's pieces doesn't resemble traditional oval or rectangular-shaped gum pellets; and at a suggested retail price of $2.99, it is about twice the cost of a normal pack of gum.
