I dislike anti-drug propaganda ads. i just don't think they work, because usually they are full of shit, and blow the risk out of proportion to reality, or just flat out lie, and lose credibility. but this "Deep End" spot about meth is powerful. i just don't understand what mentality leads to taking meth for the first time. you might as well start guzzling liquid drano. being a libertarian, i do not believe in the government outlawing any substance for adults, but what i do believe in is education, and trying to make people aware of the risks.

Here is a framegrab from the Red Epic M camera. I did not color-correct it at all. I wanted to show you what the images look like coming out of the camera. This was shot on an Arri 16mm Master Prime lens at T1.3, 96 frames per second, RAW.

I do not think it is possible to consider yourself a serious, modern feature film director without having at least a basic fluency in Japanese animation. Many of the advancements in story-telling technique have come from Japan, via animation, a format that frees a filmmaker to take stories in all kinds of directions that would be difficult to do with live-action filming. Thus, entire new approaches to story-telling have emerged. I have learned so much from the masters of Japan -- Miyazaki, Oshii, Miura, Shinkai. If I am fortunate enough to one day direct a narrative feature film, these Japanese directors will have as much influence on me as Kubrick or Malick.

Some beautiful artwork in Makoto Shinkai's new film "Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below" (星を追う子ども). Shinkai is an amazing creative person. He made his entire first movie, "Voices of a Distant Star," completely by himself, on a Power Mac G4.

We are excited to announce that colorist Ian Vertovec ("Social Network", "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") at Light Iron will be doing the color grade on "TimeScapes" in mid March. With Ian and LI in our corner, it's a foregone conclusion that "TimeScapes" will be looking like a $10-million-dollar picture :) -Tom

If you look close you can see me and +Dustin Kukuk camping in the distance while the camera was rolling that night in Utah. Not sure what that red flash was. We usually practice super-strict light discipline. That night we watched Nausicaä on my laptop and consumed large amounts of adult beverages. Just one of hundreds of nights like this.

"Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps" was such a huge, wasted opportunity. They should have given that picture to me. It would have been called "Wall Street 2: Gekko Strikes Back". Nothing but Gekko kicking ass, and NO Shia whatever-his-name-is.

I enjoyed "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." The film is kind of slow, but well made, with top-notch acting. Like "Dragon Tattoo," the audience cannot really solve the mystery on their own, which limits the film's whodunnit appeal. Like "Tattoo," this movie (which was shot on 35mm chemical film) also went through a 4K Digital Intermediate process, but "Tinker Tailor's" image quality suffers by way of comparison, due to extremely visible grain and what I can only refer to as noise in the darker shots. "Dragon's" image (shot on 4K and 5K digital RAW cinema cameras) was monumentally cleaner, sharper, more detailed, and more appealing, at least to me. Perhaps they added grain to "Tinker" in order to match the era in which the story takes place?
By the way, Tom Hardy's ridiculous wig in this film is almost worth the price of... more »

No surprise that "Porco Rosso" is at 100% on RT. This is Miyazaki making exuberant cinema at the height of his powers. If you've not seen it, do yourself a favor and watch this movie.

I'm sorry, but under NO circumstances should Steven Spielberg be directing the "Ghost in the Shell" live-action films. Spielberg was already handed a dream project similar to this... a chance to make Stanley Kubrick's "AI". That did not go well.
I would rather see someone like Darren Aronofsky tackle this. Or Christopher Nolan.

So how awesome would this shot be on a 2,000-frame-per-second camera, captured from a fast-moving vehicle?
