Morgan Self (binarybishop)0Hey Everyone! I am still working out the details, but I am proud to announce that the first Guantanamo Bay Ingress First Saturday will commence on 4 July! This First Saturday will be focused on showing new agents the dynamics of the game and giving them a chance to meet with some fellow agent special guests that should be flying in. Since this is the first one and almost every agent is new here, we will keep it very simple and not get too much into advanced gameplay. And first and foremost, make it fun. Schedule: 10:00 - 11:00   -   Meet, signup, introductions 11:00 - 1:30     -   Released to gain AP 1:30 - 2:00       -   Tally up score and announcements Please RSVP, and see you all soon! If you have a guest suggestion please let us know by filling out the form at http://bit.ly/bts_guest *Editorial Note:* The staff of Behind the Scanner understands the game is faction based and we do our best to balance the show with representatives from both sides. This despite our mission of highlighting people over factions. Sometimes, Murphy's Law comes to fruition and derails our efforts. In the interest of maintaining the balance our viewers have come to expect, we will have two Enlightened guests next week. We know our regular viewers are interested in learning about the people behind the scanners regardless of faction. However, to those unfamiliar with the show, we thought it best to address the elephant in the room upfront. We thank you for your continued support in exploring the lives of the player's not just the agents.  #MeridianProject #BehindTheScanner #Ingress   #Enlightened #Resistance  +Ingress   #BTS  Behind The Scanner: Ep 08 - Tzafrir & Epi2014-06-13 03:00:00121

From @108020987035258478791: Operation #Cassandra, a 14 day long XM Anomaly being exploited by a global network of Enlightened and Resistance Agents will impact Washington D.C. and Boston, MA on August 17, 2013. By utilizing massive levels of XM, the Agents are attempting to influence key American cultural, political and financial powercenters. IQTech will be monitoring the situation. Our XM labs predict that the Anomaly will manifest as follows. *MEASUREMENT TIMES* We intend to measure the Anomaly 4 times, at 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00 Local Time (EDT) during the first 5 minutes of the hour. The exact measurement times are encrypted using an unbreakable One Time Pad, which will be revealed with the results of each measurement. *CLUSTERS* Four Clusters per city have been selected for measurement. Images are enclosed to clarify the Portals within each Cluster. Each Cluster corresponds to a single Measurement Time. (Cluster 1 = Measurement 1 etc.). *VOLATILE PORTALS* 15 minutes prior to each measurement, we will be able to determine 5 Volatile Portals, a subset of the active Cluster, that will be significantly more valuable to the factions when the measurement occurs. *MAJOR POWERCENTERS* Of even greater significance are two key powercenters in Washington D.C., The White House and The US Capitol Building. It is predicted that capturing these structures in an XM field will be critically valuable to the Factions during the course of the Anomaly. *VALUES AT MEASUREMENT TIME* (At measurement time, within the Cluster being measured) Portal Ownership: 2 per Portal Link connected to Portal: 5 per Link * Volatile Portal Ownership: 20 per Volatile Portal A Field over All Portals in the Cluster being Measured: 100 ** A Field capturing the White House or the Capitol Building: 50 **  * Links anchored by multiple Portals will be counted once.  ** In the event of overlapping fields from different  Factions, the outer field will be measured. *IMPACT ON REMAINDER OF ANOMALY* The end state of this Anomaly will accumulate and carry forward for the remainder of Operation #Cassandra. The losing Faction will be able to gain access to Volatile Portal information approximately 5 minutes earlier (via Private Intel and/or Faction Comms) at the next Operation #Cassandra city. *XM ANOMALY LINKS* AUG 11: SYDNEY http://goo.gl/ujBcwP  AUG 13: MILAN http://goo.gl/Y6iOWP AUG 15: TOKYO http://goo.gl/H3JDLL  AUG 17: DUSSELDORF http://goo.gl/DznAsx  AUG 17: WASHINGTON, DC http://goo.gl/HiBk2W  AUG 17: BOSTON http://goo.gl/xpftg9  AUG 18: MANILA http://goo.gl/wgB7gK  AUG 20: PARIS http://goo.gl/LyaFOM  AUG 21: SAO XM Anomaly: #Cassandra, Washington, DC2013-08-17 13:00:00460

Chaos made simple

This shows a lot of tiny particles moving around.   If you were one of these particles, it would be hard to predict where you'd go.  See why?  It's because each time you approach the crossing, it's hard to tell whether you'll go into the left loop or the right one.

You can predict which way you'll go: it's not random.  But to predict it, you need to know your position quite accurately.  And each time you go around, it gets worse.  You'd need to know your position extremely accurately to predict which way you go — left or right — after a dozen round trips.

This effect is called deterministic chaos.  Deterministic chaos happens when something is so sensitive to small changes in conditions that its motion is very hard to predict in practice, even though it's not actually random.

This particular example of deterministic chaos is one of the first and most famous.  It's the Lorenz attractor, invented by Edward Lorenz as a very simplified model of the weather in 1963.

The equations for the Lorentz attractor are not very complicated if you know calculus.  They say how the x, y and z coordinates of a point change with time:

dx/dt = 10(x-y)
dy/dt = x(28-z) - y
dz/dt = xy - 8z/3

You are not supposed to be able to look at these equations and say "Ah yes!  I see why these give chaos!"   Don't worry: if you get nothing out of these equations, it doesn't mean you're "not a math person"  — just as not being able to easily paint the Mona Lisa after you see it doesn't mean you're "not an art person".  Lorenz had to solve them using a computer to discover chaos.  I personally have no intuition as to why these equations work... though I could get such intuition if I spent a week reading about it.

The weird numbers here are adjustable, but these choices are the ones Lorenz originally used.  I don't know what choices David Szakaly used in his animation.  Can you find out?

If you imagine a tiny drop of water flowing around as shown in this picture, each time it goes around it will get stretched in one direction.  It will get squashed in another direction, and be neither squashed nor stretched in a third direction.

The stretching is what causes the unpredictability: small changes in the initial position will get amplified.  I believe the squashing is what keeps the two loops in this picture quite flat.  Particles moving around these loops are strongly attracted to move along a flat 'conveyor belt'.  That's why it's called the Lorentz attractor.

With the particular equations I wrote down, the drop will get stretched in one direction by a factor of about 2.47... but squashed in another direction by a factor of about 2 million!    At least that's what this physicist at the University of Wisconsin says:

• J. C. Sprott, Lyapunov exponent and dimension of the Lorenz attractor, http://sprott.physics.wisc.edu/chaos/lorenzle.htm

He has software for calculating these numbers - or more precisely their logarithms, which are called Lyapunov exponents.  He gets 0.906, 0, and -14.572 for the Lyapunov exponents.

The region that attracts particles — roughly the glowing region in this picture — is a kind of fractal.  Its dimension is slightly more than 2, which means it's very flat but slightly 'fuzzed out'.  Actually there are different ways to define the dimension, and Sprott computes a few of them.  If you want to understand what's going on, try this:

• Edward Ott, Attractor dimensions, http://www.scholarpedia.org/article/Attractor_dimensions

For more nice animations of the Lorentz attractor, see:

http://visualizingmath.tumblr.com/post/121710431091/a-sample-solution-in-the-lorenz-attractor-when

David Szakaly has a blog called dvdp full of astounding images:

http://dvdp.tumblr.com/

and presumably this one of the Lorenz attractor is buried in there somewhere, though I'm feeling too lazy to do an image search and find it.___

Unfortunately, the shiny new bookmark manager is trying to "help" me and is eventually out to create its own (auto-awesome) folders, ignoring mine. Literally. It takes a perceived 12 clicks to bookmark something and ensure it arrived at its correct location (mostly, it gets added to the root folder).

Here is help: Go to chrome://flags/#enhanced-bookmarks-experiment and turn it off. Me personally, I'll be in the market for a third party bookmark manager until there is an AI that gets my taxonomy requirements.

A handy guide to measuring the sky

Our conventional methods of measuring distances between two objects on Earth make very little sense while measuring distances between celestial objects.

Because of this, astronomers measure the apparent distances between objects in the sky using a method based on angles. Developed by the Babylonians thousands of years ago, this method uses the angle that any two celestial objects with an observational point on Earth as a way to measure and define the apparent distances between such objects.

Such distances are known as angular distances or angular separation and are measured in terms of degrees (°), arc minutes (') and arc seconds (").

Such distances are known as angular distances or angular separation and are measured in terms of degrees (°), arc minutes (') and arc seconds (").

A handy way to measure distances

Hold your hand at arm’s length and close one eye.

# Make a fist, with the back of your hand facing you. The width of your fist will approximately be 10 degrees. This means that any two objects that are on the opposite ends of your fist will be 10 degrees apart. The North Star (Polaris) and Dubhe, one of the northern pointers of the Big are 3 fists apart. This means that angular distance or angular separation between the two stars is 30°.

# Open up your fist, stretch your little finger and thumb as far as you can and curl down the rest of your fingers. The tip of your little finger and your thumb will span about 25°. The Big Dipper spans around 25°.

# The tip-to-tip span between your index finger and your little finger is 15°.

# Your three middle fingers will span about 5°.

# Your little finger at an arms length is about 1° wide.

It is important to note that such measurements are approximate – not everyone has the same sized hand.

Angular size

Angular size or angular diameter of a celestial object is the angular separation between opposite edges of the object. The Sun and the Moon are the only objects in the sky whose angular size is visible to the naked eye.

The angular diameter of a full Moon is about 30', while the angular diameter of the Sun is around 32'.

Find your latitude

If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, you can use your hands to find your current location’s latitude. To do this, stretch your hands in front of you and measure the angle between the visible horizon and the North Star. This angle is your latitude in degrees. There is no bright star equivalent to the North Star in the Southern Hemisphere.

Why isn't the Year's Earliest Sunset on the Winter Solstice?

The Winter Solstice usually occurs around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere. Many believe that the year’s latest sunrise and earliest sunset also happen on this day. This is not the case.

There are two parts to the difference:

1. The equation of time — the difference between time that is measured using a sundial (true or apparent solar time) and time that is measured using a watch or a clock (mean solar time) due to the elliptical shape of Earth's path around the Sun and the Earth's axial tilt.

During the summer solstice it is +23.5° and during the winter solstice it is -23.5°. It is 0° during the equinoxes.

See you in hell, brother.

Yes, it is possible to have genuine online friends, we miss you Dieter
Two years ago, +Dieter Mueller  played an experiment where he deleted his G+ account in order to show the superficial nature of online friendships and what he called the ‘big data cow’. His experiment failed miserably when scores and scores of people contacted him to know was he okay and to come back and join us again.
Sadly, Dieter has departed for good this time. In true Dieter style, and in his own words he has stage managed his own death. I’ve no doubt he is above there now looking down at us all and smiling, but I’m sad we didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. I hope Dieter has finally found the rest he desired. ___Seriously, +Dieter Mueller?!

Taking books into the future?

The book format on the Economist site nicely illustrates the difference between a tangible book and a digital prop. While the message may or may not be devalued, it is certainly altered, a fact that needs to be taken into account; you cannot arbitrarily change the medium without adjusting the message.

When I'm making books (http://alexanderbecker.net/books/), it always yields better results to invest in the extra work to adapt the printed book's content to the ebook, instead of merely copying and forcing what was created for one medium into the respective other medium.

Soft Control (in case you thought you'd move freely, you probably aren't)

How can we control the collective behavior of self-organized multi-agent systems? We try to answer the question by proposing a new notion called 'Soft Control', which keeps the local rule of the existing agents in the system. We show the feasibility of soft control by a case study. Consider the simple but typical distributed multi-agent model proposed by Vicsek et al. for flocking of birds: each agent moves with the same speed but with different headings which are updated using a local rule based on the average of its own heading and the headings of its neighbors. Most studies of this model are about the self-organized collective behavior, such as synchronization of headings. We want to intervene in the collective behavior (headings) of the group by soft control. A specified method is to add a special... more »

A specified method is to add a special agent, called a 'Shill', which can be controlled by us but is treated as an ordinary agent by other agents. We construct a control law for the shill so that it can synchronize the whole group to an objective heading. This control law is proved to be effective analytically and numerically. Note that soft control is different from the approach of distributed control. It is a natural way to intervene in the distributed systems. It may bring out many interesting issues and challenges on the control of complex systems.

(Soft Control on Collective Behavior of a Group of Autonomous Agents by a Shill Agent; http://arxiv.org/abs/1007.0803)

An application

A number of novel wireless networked services, ranging from participatory sensing to social networking, leverage the increasing capabilities of mobile devices and the movement of the individuals carrying them. For many of these systems, their effectiveness fundamentally depends on coverage and the particular mobility patterns of the participants. Given the strong spatial and temporal regularity of human mobility, the needed coverage can typically only be attained through a large participant base.

In this paper we explore an alternative approach to attain coverage without scale -- (soft) controlling the movement of participants. We present Crowd Soft Control (CSC), an approach to exert limited control over the temporal and spatial movements of mobile users by leveraging the built-in incentives of location-based gaming and social applications. By pairing network services with these location-based apps, CSC allows researchers to use an application's incentives (e.g. games objectives) to control the movement of participating users, increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of the associated network service. After outlining the case for Crowd Soft Control, we present an initial prototype of our ideas and discuss potential benefits and costs in the context of two case studies.

Around 1995, David Carson created a book, "The End of Print" — mostly typographical terrorism around the title thesis with tons of graphics and ill-cropped photographs. It's beautiful, spectacular even, and I still have it as a hard copy, a physical souvenir of the time. It's a monument, an ironic paradox that failed to deliver its promise starting from day one, its contradiction getting even stronger over the years. Even better, the cheap paperback came loose during the first weeks. I had it repaired by a bookbinder. It's a book after all. The kind that doesn't die. (Now, it's out of print. Q.E.D.)

In 2011, I wrote "None of This is Real" — a beautiful book full of art criticizing itself. Even more beautiful is that it delivers on its title, I never had a substantial amount of copies printed. If you order it, it will be printed in the geographical region you happen to be and become real.

Books are emotional objects. That's why I'm betting on them — as a bookmaker.

In the strict meaning of the word there cannot be anything 'new' in the typography of books. Though largely forgotten today, methods and rules upon which it is impossible to improve have been developed over centuries. To produce perfect books, these rules have to be brought back to life and applied. —Jan Tschichold, 1958

A few days ago, the Washington Post reported on a dump of 160,000 communications intercepted by the NSA, talking about the number of people being deliberately targeted versus the number of people incidentally monitored, the intimacy of the conversations and images captured, and so on.

Today, they did something even better, which I wish newspapers would do more often: reported Bart Gellman goes into great detail about how the story was reported, how editorial and phrasing decisions were made, and exactly what was behind the story. It's long, but if you want to understand how things like this are reported on by a careful journalist, this is a great read.

Again: "Pretty much anything that can be remembered can be cracked."

*Now that (some of) everybody's passwords may have just been compromised due to the #heartbleed  SSL ("https://...") bug* in the widely used OpenSSL open-source security suite used by the majority of Apache/nginx Web servers (60%+ of all servers)...

(a lot of technical, etc. details curated over here:
plus.google.com/112964117318166648677/posts/MZ3jtiVm591 )

... it is probably time for EVERYONE to review their #security  procedures (hold off on changing ALL of your passwords however UNTIL you've ascertained that all the services you use have been fixed! Many have been by now...), and that starts with passwords:

The bad news, as you will understand from reading the great, medium -length post from famed Security Expert Bruce Schneier (he recently spoke at >>>  #trustycon  ), which you really owe to yourself to read in full if you care about anything... is that ALL passwords that can be somewhat remembered by humans are vulnerable, and all others you keep forgetting weekly/monthly/etc. without writing them down.

Which is also a terrible security practice. So what's the solution? You need to use a global Password Manager of some sort, and then use a completely random password for EACH service that you could never remember on your own.

(I wouldn't even trust the "random" starting letters  of words from a phrase known only to you approach he mentions here, because that could probably be attacked with a "dictionary-style" attack as well before long.

Note the sophisticated existing dictionary/combination attacks including most languages known to wo/man and things like L33T-speak that allow skilled attackers to get up to 90%(!) of exisiting passwords once a user/password database is compromised.

And lest you think that Two-Factor Authentication - "2FA" - makes everything OK, keep in mind that SMS text message and similar channels could also be subject to breach.)

I have long resisted this approach myself, thinking that I had a clever enough system of passwords varied for each service that I could still remember... but now that due to Heartbleed everything is on the table and up for review, I am going to bite the bullet and get it set up as described above.

Here are a few places to start (not an endorsement, do your own homework):

For Windows users, this may be a very good free/open-source option:
www.schneier.com/passsafe.html

Sadly no free Mac version (there is a $15 paid one), but there is a free Android version that I will test (carefully, with 1 or 2 minor services at first!) in the coming days:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jefftharris.passwdsafe

Then there are the many Usual Suspects of LastPass, 1Password, asf., a pretty good list is mentioned on this Twitter thread:
twitter.com/balajis/status/454113593701588992

Among it this new entrant who's security model I am studying right now, but which sounds good so far, and which has a free version:
www.dashlane.com/security

Also potentially interesting open-source/free:

Neurons...

Have you ever wondered how the Internet flows? Here are a couple of fantastic maps: of transoceanic cables and of public Internet links.

The first one (http://submarine-cable-map-2014.telegeography.com/) shows the lines that span the oceans; these are where almost all of the data flows from country to country. (Satellites are actually far less useful in the modern age; their bandwidth is a small fraction of what cables can provide) Fishing nets and ship anchors are the biggest threats to their day-to-day function, and for countries which only have one or two links, a single accident can easily have a huge impact. While it may not surprise you that much of Africa and South Asia are poorly connected, you may be surprised at how few lines flow in to Australia.

The second map (http://global-internet-map-2012.telegeography.com/) shows public interconnect lines and bandwidth. This map is a bit older (2012) but it shows a lot of the real connectivity problems very vividly: North America, Europe, and the Middle East are well-connected, but Asia (except for a few major cities), Africa, and South America fare much worse. To see the real problems, zoom in carefully and try to trace (say) the shortest route you can find from Mumbai to Bangalore. You're not hallucinating: It's via Singapore. This is actually a big improvement; until a few years ago, it was via Zurich. In South Asia and South America, ISPs are sort of infamous for saying "this neighboring ISP is my competitor! Why would I peer [connect networks] with them?" In the rest of the world, everyone connects with everyone -- that's why the network is fast and robust.

I'm not sure if this second map includes private networks or not; I suspect it doesn't, which actually hides a huge fraction of the Internet which you use. For example, when you connect to Google, you're really connecting to the nearest Google endpoint, and then all of the rest of the traffic (to wherever your e-mails, posts, videos, and so on are living) is routed over a very big network that we run -- and which is much faster than the public network, because it's used by a single organization which can carefully control and synchronize traffic.

h/t +Kristin Milton for leading me to these.___Neurons...
