Jason Darrell20,419A Circle of Bloggers -|- FYIOver time, this circle has fluctuated in populace and purpose. It's simply called "Blogger" - at one point or another, I've read a blog, liked what I've seen and added the author thus. There will be some noticeable absences. I have Pro Copywriters, G+ on Steroids and Google Awesome circles, too. If you're not in here, blog and I engage regularly, you're in one of those. However, being in this circle doesn't preclude you from being in those others. I know several people here I have in multiple circles. This isn't a 'shared circle' as in: add your name, plus 1 it and share it.These peops have been hand-picked by me over (almost) 3 years. And, according to Circloscope, all have posted content within the last 6 weeks (unless they're exceptionally talented and they warrant inclusion due to the magnitude of their blogging skills, in which case I've left them in).Lastly, if you're included and have never posted content in your life, accept my apologies and drop me a note to be removed.2014-07-11 11:43:174091005CC G+

Danial Hallock10,323No Name NeededIt's getting close to the Holiday Season, and the whole point of this particular part of the season is to "give thanks" to the people (or, in America, things) that have positively impacted your life.  For me, these are those people. You all should remember my initial circle The Three Hundred (http://goo.gl/kqE8h) which was well received at 251 +1s and 48 reshares.  This circle was my first round of hyper-vetting individuals for circling, based on a lot of criteria that was centered around high quality content and a high level of engagement.  I think I combed through about 2,300 profiles on a one-by-one basis before arriving at the final product. That circle then morphed into the The Collaborative Circle (http://goo.gl/Ex9ai) which was less publicized, but still racked in 90 +1s and 13 reshares.  This circle was based on the premise that "If four people from The Three Hundred enjoy person X, then I should also enjoy them."  Well, the combination of these circles lead to an interesting scenario in which I was able to locate all stars through a combination of overlap and relevance (via Google algorithms).  Out popped these twenty five individuals, and I could not be happier with the results.  These are twenty-five individuals in which I am subscribed, their posts are always enjoyable as well as insightful, and the notification stream keeps me engaged throughout the day.Whether you're looking at the tech news from +Mike Elgan, the social and scientific commentary of +Yonatan Zunger, or the general internet awesomeness that is the enigma of +Sarah Rios, you're not going to be disappointed.I normally only notify people that are contained within a circle, but these people are too awesome not to be guilty of a little plus-spam;  feel free to request a removal from the notified (all) circles.(Link to this post: http://goo.gl/AlsXG5) #nonameneeded   #circleshare   #sharingiscaring   #sharedcircle  2013-11-13 23:53:242639671CC G+

Jake Kern24,894The Silver DonutBeen wanting to do a circle share for a while, but I just haven't wanted to put in the work to get a group of 100 for another #GoldenDonut. Instead, I grabbed the top 500 from my Google relevancy algorithm. Then I removed a couple people who don't like being in circle shares & some pages so I could stretch the 500 a bit. (For instance, both +Melissa Bagley & +Melissa Ann Bagley Photography would be in the circle--in the top 25, actually--but I just included Melissa's personal profile even though you should circle both.)Many amazing people in here. Thank you for making this corner of the Internet worthwhile.Peace. #SilverDonut  2013-07-13 22:19:3849915024134CC G+
Mz Maau10,204I rarely share circles, and I regret to inform, this is not the promised #CircleDirk , rather, it's a circle I've been semi-maintaining since last spring, when it was created for +Pierce Arner to jump-start his Plus experience.Today, I'm resharing the current version on behalf of +Søren Dalsgaard Brath, who, like Pierce, is looking for new content for his stream.I figure he and I probably have a chunk of overlap, so I've added a few extras he might not yet know about. Some notes about the curation of this circle:I've tried to set aside those who have not posted recently, and I've tried to only include those who post publicly, or to extended circles.  I may have missed a few, and if you're in this circle and would like to be permanently removed, please let me know. This is not the final version, as I'm not sure such a thing is possible. This circle DOES come with a warning:You will, most likely, NOT enjoy everyone in this circle.  I, like many, have eclectic tastes, and I'm still a bit gun-shy after seeing some of the explosions from last year's crossing of the streams, so PLEASE, edit this circle to your liking with that in mind.If I ping you, you're in the circle.  There is no expectation or requirement to add this circle, it's merely a courtesy ping.  Again, if you would like to be removed from any future circle shares, please let me know. And yes, I promise, I'm still working on the #CircleDirk .Also note:  This is NOT an indication of who I like best, though some are included in this circle.  It is simply meant to be a sample of the diversity I follow.#PinkAndFluffyPersonsOfQuestionableRepute2013-06-22 16:38:09164143576CC G+

Epic Level LEGO Map of Middle-Earth - http://bit.ly/1nyzk7x

Really incredible work here from Christoph Bartneck.

He has painstakingly re-created the map of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth in topographical style from LEGO. And he’s done it on a grand scale. The resulting map is apparently 2 meters by 2 meters (thats roughly 6.5 x 6.5 feet) in size and contains 30,000 bricks. It’s built up in 7 levels and took him 4 months to complete.

He’s even put the breadcrumb trail of the Fellowship’s path across Middle-Earth in there. Oh and all the major characters from the book are represented in the appropriate geographical locations via their LEGO mini-figures.

I’m just trying to figure out where I could mount this thing.

Minion Captain Jack Sparrow Artwork -  http://bit.ly/1roZyIw

I love a good mashup and this is a good mashup. What do you get when you cross Despicable Me with the Pirates of the Caribbean? Well naturally you get a Captain Jack Sparrow.

This rather excellent drawing was done by AtomiccircuS using markers and color pencils. I think he’s done a great job of capturing the look of Captain Jack while still making this a suitably miniony minion.

Lord Of The Rings Fan Art - What Can You Find In The Mines Of Moria? - http://bit.ly/1rMd6ya

In this fabulous art by Loopydave the Fellowship of the Ring finds far more than just Orcs in the Mines of Moria (and no I’m not talking about a cave troll).

In fact it turns out there are all sorts of other things. The first two I spotted were Grumpy Cat and Cookie Monster, but that’s just scratching the surface.

Loopydave actually provides a link to a version showing everything that’s hidden in the picture.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Poster - http://bit.ly/1nCIhg2

The promotion for the final Hobbit movie previously titled There and Back Again and now called The Battle of the Five Armies (not sure why they added a the into the title) has begun. The movie hits theaters on December 12th and with Comic-Con upon us there is a poster!

Smaug looks angry.

There will likely have a teaser trailer at the Con and hopefully online not too long after.

Phineas And Ferb Star Wars Trailer - http://bit.ly/1nyig1u

Here’s something I’ve been looking forward to since… well since I saw their Mission Marvel episode actually. Basically it’s an official Phineas and Ferb Star Wars mashup. And it airs on the Disney Channel July 26th.

We’ll get all the Phineas and Ferb regulars and a heaping of Star Wars guest stars. It seems for example that Luke Skywalker is actually their neighbor? Who knew…

Finn and Jake Visit Halloween Town In This Nightmare Before Christmas/Adventure Time Mashup - http://bit.ly/1nydtNx

This artwork by FunkBlast is almost a case of using absence to define presence. What we’re given here is merely the silhouette’s of Finn and Jake from Adventure Time along with the moon and cliffs that are instantly recognizable from A Nightmare Before Christmas.

There are no details here, and indeed not even that much in the way of color. A few shades of blue and some white is pretty much all it is, along with some nice crumpled paper texturing.

It’s extremely effective in its minimalism.

Hellboy Fan Art - Dragonslayer - http://bit.ly/1rEEVII

Here’s another great bit of artwork by Daniel Govar. This time round it’s Hellboy who gets the epic treatment. He’s depicted here slaying a rather majestic dragon.

Is it just me or does he not seem very happy about that?

Hellboy seems to be in “barbarian” mode here using a sword rather than guns and with his horns long, not cut short.

The blue blood used for the dragon does make a nice contrast to Hellboy’s red skin too.

Star Wars / Disney Mashup Cosplay - Meet Snowbafett - http://bit.ly/1zNV3vZ

Now I'm on record (repeatedly) on the subject of just how lame a  character Boba Fett actually is. Third worst in the entire Star Wars universe isn’t hyperbole. That’s actually where I think he ranks. Fett has one thing and one thing only going for him. He looks pretty cool (in a 70s sort of way).

So Amber Arden’s costume (as photographed here by Estrada Photography) takes the one good thing about Fett and makes it massively cooler by combining it with a Disney Princess. Snow White to be specific.

Not only does she give the Mandalorean armor the correct color scheme, she’s even put a bow on the helmet! Though since she’s got a bow in her hair too that does seem a tad excessive.

Snowbafett is probably a better bounty hunter than Boba too.

Beautiful Middle-Earth Art - From The Shire To The Sea - http://bit.ly/1zNQ66n

Not only is this a really beautiful painting by Joe Gilronan but there’s so much going on that you have to take your time and let your eyes sweep gently over it.

Obviously starting in the Shire at Bag End, the painting takes us on a tour of western Middle-Earth stopping by Rivendell, Gondor, The Argonath and the Grey Havens, all while the baleful Eye of Sauron glares down.

Gilronan is a professional artist apparently and has produced quite a lot of Tolkien inspired artwork. All of it definitely worth checking out so click through the link. You also want to make sure you take a look at the full size image, because there is a lot going on here.

First Trailer For SyFy's 12 Monkeys Series - http://bit.ly/1zNJZyX

The show won't air until 2015, but SyFy have released the first trailer for 12 Monkeys which is adapted from the Terry Gilliam movie of the same name.

In the trailer we seem to be covering very similar ground to the movie. I'm guessing this is all happening the first episode. I mean how far along with shooting could they really be at this point? Which does raise a question about where they will go for the rest of the season.

Visually it's got nothing on Gilliam's movie. But then, there really never was any hope of that. There are some promising actors in the mix though and the basic concept is one of the more interesting uses of time travel so I remain curious.

Star Wars Fan Art - Darth Talon Will Make You Tremble - http://bit.ly/1rrLBJV

Darth Talon for those who don’t track all the details of the assorted books and comics is a Lethan Twi’lek who became a Sith Lady as part of Darth Krayt’s One Sith (so says Wookiepedia). This all happens 100 or so years after the fall of the Emperor so you can safely assume it’s not canon any more and ignore it.

As shown here in this image by daRoz though she is pretty awe inspiring don’t you think? Not someone to mess with unless you have a death wish judging by the look she’s giving. Really moody bit of artwork and the skin looks like skin not a costume.

Loudon Heights Overlook

Here's a different look at Harpers Ferry. This time round I hiked up Loudon Heights rather than Maryland Heights.

While the walk up Maryland Heights is pretty much straight up (well round and round up I suppose) Loudon Heights is a bit more spread out. First you go up, then you walk along the spine of the mountain for a way.

At the end of the trail you get this view which is definitely worthwhile.

Next time I go up there I need to try out my telephoto lens and get some closer shots of Harpers Ferry itself.

Panasonic Lumix 14mm f/2.5 Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens - http://bit.ly/1roSDPR

I think I want this lens.

Even by the standards of Micro Four Thirds lenses this thing is tiny. Which makes the whole camera incredibly light and portable when this is the lens you have on. On top of that F/2.5 makes for a better depth of field and would give me a small low light boost compared to the kit lens.

Theres also a pretty nice 20mm pancake lens that Panasonic makes, but right now the 14mm is only $260 which is a pretty good price.

Disney's Big Hero 6 First Full Trailer - http://bit.ly/1roM9jO

Walt Disney Animation Studios are behind Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen which is a track record everyone should pay attention to. Marvel of course have stormed the box office over the last few years.

So Big Hero 6 which is Walt Disney Animation Studios reinterpreting some relatively obscure Marvel Comics characters is doubly worth your attention. And they've released the first full trailer which looks to be both cute and funny,

How Did They Get Like That

From time to time on my walks I am confronted with an arrangement that makes me ask... How did they get like that?

Take these rather substantially sized boulders for example. Clearly they did not start off in this arrangement.

Yet here I am hiking along the spine of a mountain and there they sit. What particularly alignment of circumstances resulted in the creation of this pillar?

No I'm not looking for a detailed scientific treatise on this particular situation... this is a question of a more general nature

Will The New Doctor Who Title Sequence Look Something Like This?  - http://bit.ly/1rmaJ4Q

So here’s an interesting thing. I’ve mentioned before (and you’ve probably seen reported elsewhere) that several scripts for Doctor Who season 8 leaked onto the internet.

Well apparently in those scripts there is a reference to the title sequence being done by BBC Wales Graphics based on original idea by Billy Hanshaw.

So who is Billy Hanshaw and what is his idea? Well Hanshaw is apparently a media professional who is also a Doctor Who fan and just last year he posted this idea for a Doctor Who credits sequence on YouTube.

Of course it’s not clear to what extent this idea is being used or which elements are being incorporated. Still it is significantly different from what we’ve seen before. What do you think? Personally I like a lot of the elements but itfeels a lit... more »

LEGO Game Of Thrones - House Stark Sigil - http://bit.ly/1rm6FSg

It’s becoming almost passe to do artistic variations on the sigils of the various houses from Game of Thrones.

But this one is worth bringing to your attention for a few reasons. First of all it’s LEGO and that makes everything cooler. But also it’s extremely well executed as a poster.

The image takes advantage of the three dimensional nature of the Dire Wolf sigil to cast shadows and texture across itself and then emphasizes that further by placing it on a stark black background. Finish that off with carefully crafted text using the “Winter Is Coming” slogan and you have a very striking poster. Its harsh simplicity very much embodies the house which it seeks to represent.

Omar Ovalle has an eye for both LEGO and design in general I think.

Gender Switched Supernatural Cosplay - Death - http://bit.ly/1rm4mP2

The TV Show Supernatural actually had one of the best humanoid incarnations of Death that I’ve seen in any visual media. A large part of that came down to the choice of Julian Richings to play the character. A combination of his gaunt features and the dry weary tones with which he delivered the lines made for a distinctive but entirely believable death.

Some of these elements are not things that can be easily captured in cosplay. Particularly when you pull a gender switch on the character.

ShahanaMikagi has done a great job here with the visuals of the character as presented in Supernatural. From the obvious ones like the cane and the clothing to the expression on her face in this photo. Having the shadow “wings” int he background is just the icing on the cake.

Doctor Who Season 8 Trailer - http://bit.ly/1rjsmlN

So the BBC have had to deal with not only leaked scripts for the first few episodes of Doctor Who Season 8, but also now a (very poor quality black and white, unfinished) video of the first episode leaking out. Seriously… don’t watch it. I have no problem with spoilers as they are commonly defined these days, but that will absolutely affect your enjoyment of the finished product.

But for those who have steered clear we’ve still seen very little of what Peter Capaldi’s Doctor is actually going to be like. Until now.

LEGO Star Wars Cosplay - LEGO Boba Fett - http://bit.ly/1rjqSrG

How about that for a geek triumvirate headline?

Yes this is a cosplay of the LEGO Star Wars minifigure of the galaxy’s least competent bounty hunter Boba Fett as lovingly created by CGS1 for his son. Even I think it’s really cool and I think Boba Fett is the third lamest character in Star Wars.

It’s probably the most convincing LEGO minifigure cosplay I’ve seen to date

Dungeons & Dragons Cosplay - Presto The Magician - http://bit.ly/1riKsnU

I really like it when I see unusual cosplay. Either popular characters reinterpreted in a new way or more obscure characters brought to life.

Presto The Magician falls into that second category. I know some of you will remember the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon from the early 1980s but I think it’s fair to say we’re a minority at this point. It was a fun show though and I think above average for a kids cartoon.

Presto the Magician (yes called a magician rather than Magic User) was a well meaning but frequently ineffectual hero who’s magic basically consisted of pulling things from his hat. Anyway… it was a fun show.

Here DashingTonyLima does a solid bit of cosplay as Presto complete with looking for things in his hat.

Middle-Earth Fan Art - Color Map of Beleriand - http://bit.ly/1zwaJUu

I love maps of Middle-Earth. Whether it’s Tolkien’s own maps or the ones in the Atlas of Middle-Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad. The thing about these sorts of maps is that not only can you plot out where things in J.R.R. Tolkien’s epics happened, but they stimulate the imagination for further adventures.

So imagine just how much I like this large full color map of Beleriand (from the First Age of Middle-Earth) and it’s illustration of all the places that are talked about in The Silmarillion.

It’s a beautiful piece of work by Sirelle. Make sure to look at the full size version of this or you’re missing out on a lot of the details.

Lucy Griffiths' Liv Written Out of Constantine - http://bit.ly/1zw0UGb

So when I watched the pilot of Constantine that leaked onto the internet recently I pegged the character of Liv as played by Lucy Griffiths as one of the weaker elements. Something that I hoped was going to be corrected once the series itself got underway.

Well… in a sense it has, though in a rather more extreme fashion than I anticipated. It seems according to The Hollywood Reporter that Lucy Griffiths is no longer attached to the show and that the character will not be recast. Instead early on they will introduce a female character by the name Zed (another character from the early Constantine comics).

It’s not uncommon for these sorts of changes to happen when going from pilot to full series so it’s a bit early to speculate about any significant changes in the show’s direction. Thebig ques... more »

LEGO Star Wars - Darth Malgus Lands On Hoth - http://bit.ly/1reCYT2

+Christoffer Östberg or East Mountain as he goes by on Flickr produces LEGO imagery that can only be described as beautiful. They’re also wonderfully geeky and Star Wars related which is a bonus.

It’s the attention to detail which puts these photographs over the top though. Sure they’re using some good LEGO Star Wars models, but look at this one for example. The carefully moody lighting with shadows cast. The snow falling. Christoffer has created a real atmosphere with the staging of this shot. Something that tells a story as well as showing off the LEGO models.

Really lovely work and there’s lots more of it.

Doctor Who Season 8 First Official Photo From Episode 1 - http://bit.ly/1zuh4je

So we know that episode 1 of Doctor Who Season 8 (yes I know it’s series 8 if you’re British, but most of the people reading this work in seasons as do I these days… get over it) is called Deep Breath and that it will run for 75 minutes. We also know it will feature the Paternoster gang of Madam Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax.

If you want to find out more apparently the scripts for the first 5 episodes have leaked onto the internet. But while what most people call spoilers don’t bother me at all, I can’t see any value to reading a script before seeing the show so I haven’t gone looking.

Now here is the first official photo from the episode. Somehow I can’t imagine an expression like that on the face of the previous “modern” Doctors. Patrick Troughton maybe? Feel free tospeculate wildly.... more »

Doctor Who Cosplay - 10th Doctor and Martha Jones - http://bit.ly/1ztF71Q

David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor shows Martha Jones his screwdriver in this cosplay and they both find it very interesting indeed. What? He does! They do!

Silliness aside, I like this cosplay it captures the characters without being too slavish to every tiny detail. It’s been well posed in a way that fits the two characters and the photograph is effectively composed. Unfortunately I often see what is good cosplay spoiled (for online presentation) by a poorly composed photograph.

Black And White Fireworks

It might seem counterintuitive to photograph something so obviously colorful as fireworks in black and white but I find the results both fascinating and beautiful.

By eliminating the color you are removing one of the core elements of the display certainly. But you're also removing a distraction. Now the shapes and patterns are the focus of the image.

The John Brown Wax Museum

Jamie was eager to visit the John Brown Wax Museum again on our most recent visit to Harpers Ferry.

It's one of the few things (outside of the shops) you actually have to pay for beyond the cost of parking. And it's not terribly large so the value is questionable depending on your level of interest in John Brown himself.

He is of course a significant historical figure and his actions tie quite tightly into the Civil War. The museum covers his life (briefly) in a series of wax scenes but does a reasonable job of showing both the positive and the negative.

How To Train Your Dragon Cosplay - Astrid Has A Big Axe - http://bit.ly/1zsaZEe

A very, very big axe in this cosplay by Tarah-Rex, photographed by Micktography.

I’d say this is more How To Train Your Dragon 2 Astrid, but either way the costume is great and the expression on her face perfect for the character.

I like the photograph too. My only quibble is the over-exposure of the sky which leads to her hair blending into it. I’m not sure if that was deliberate artistic intent, but I don’t care for it either way.

Disapproving Looks

My wife +Jennifer Irving and my son Jamie share a number of personality traits.

Including the tendency to give disapproving looks any time I point a camera at them.

If you’ve ever wanted to own the complete (short) run of Freaks and Geeks on DVD then this is your chance because Amazon are selling the boxed set at a whopping 59% off.

Six discs. Eighteen episodes. Twenty Nine audio commentaries. One thousand and eight minutes run time. All for less than thirty dollars. That sounds like a pretty good deal.

Fan Art - Cthulhu Rises - http://bit.ly/1zs7UDX

So I’ve shared various Cthulhu related images and objects in the past. But they’ve mostly been cutesy or jokey versions of The Great Old One. Which while fun and cool isn’t quite in the spirit of the source material. Lovecraft after all was undoubtedly writing horror stories and christmas tree tentacles aren’t that horrific.

So in an effort to balance the scales a little I give you this image by glooh which shows a suitably imposing vision of Great Cthulhu rising from the water.

You would not want to be on a ship when this guy showed up.

AmazonBasics  Portable Bluetooth Speaker - http://amzn.to/1n59mlO

I’ve had this bluetooth wireless speaker for a bit over a month now and while it’s not something I use every day, I do like it a lot.

True to the name of this range of electronics this is very much a no frills bluetooth speaker. It has a built in rechargeable battery and you can charge it up with a standard micro-USB connector (which is how everything really needs to work). Amazon claim a battery life of up to 8 hours on a single charge and I’ve never attempted that long, but it’s also never run out on me when I have used it.

With dimensions of 7.3 x 2.4 x 2.8 this is a bit too large to just pocket (there are smaller http://amzn.to/1qgHhvw and larger http://amzn.to/1jclBSs versions as well), it’s more of a throw in your bag sort of thing. But it pumps out sound at a respectable volume. Loudenough to us... more »

Patriotic Fireworks

If you squint you could probably make the American flag out of this one. You've got Blue, White and Red for the stripes and a bunch of "stars" as well.

Okay maybe it's a slight stretch because that red is more pink, but it'm important not to be too literal in interpreting things.

I really like this photo from the 4th of July fireworks show we attended. Not sure it's as good as the lat one I posted, but I wouldn't want to choose either.

LEGO Princess Bride - The Final Duel - http://bit.ly/1r6J3AM

Inigo Montoya: Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
Count Rugen: Stop saying that!

A movie classic skillfully recreated by a group of nine LEGO builders as part of a 14 vignette collaboration depicting scenes from The Princess Bride.

This one is called The Final Duel and of course shows us Inigo Montoya as he finally faces the 6 fingered man (Count Rugen) who killed his father.
