Alex Grossman56,667G+ Engagers CircleIt's been a while since I shared a circle, so here's a small circle of people I recommend following. They are great to engage with, full of energy and opinions and fun, with very little anger, disrespect, or poor manners. Hope you enjoy all of them as much as I do. They certainly make my time in G+ lots of fun. :)2013-08-22 03:31:187510711CC G+

Dan Soto56,122Long Overdue Circle ShareFirst, and foremost, this is not a scientific endeavor.  Most of these were chosen by the "relevance" factor that Google uses but I would not have included them if they weren't relevant to me.  The others were hand picked from the rest of the people I'm following that are either;a) interesting to meb) loyal engagers on my postsc) friendsEither way, you can't go wrong with this circle.Add it now to spice up your streamNote: Many of you already have many of these people in your circles already.  Add it it anyway as there might be a few that you don't have. Also, there is to be no "butthurt" over not being included in this circle.  I'm the only one allowed to that :)ENJOY!2013-01-18 00:46:3115036922CC G+

Dede King0I Missed My Cake DayThe 2 November 2011 was my cherry popping entry into the land of Plus. A year later and I can honestly say it's the best social network I've ever used. I can't remember a time, ever, when I've looked more insane smiling, laughing and scowling at a tech device in numerous coffee shops across the map.I just wanted to say thank you to the thousands of amazing people who've circled me, some of whom I've been privileged to meet and get to know. I wish circles weren't limited to 5000 and a 500 share so I could ping you all.So, Thank You (with a special nod, hugs and kisses to the top 12, yes even you) for making it fun, interesting, exciting, textless, pouncable, inflammatory, lollable, educational, thought provoking, melt worthy, smile inducing, loving, warm - just downright fantabulous. All my plusses they belong to you. Literally. Who else am I going to give it to ? Facebook? This link gave me my public plus stats - all of it is thanks to you :) http://www.allmyplus.com/u/107635094329792651474#startI must admit, I'm grateful I posted the more contentious topics limited. Alex Grossman27,422Last time I shared a relevancy circle was back in July. From then until now (October 19), it's only changed by 7 people, and most but not all of that was near the end of the list. So, it's remarkably consistent. These 99 users are on top of my relevance list (plus me since I'm relevant to myself, so a total of 100). I excluded Pages that were in there so as to only have people. Most of these folks are engaging with me through posts or comments (though some are clearly more by e-mail, such as a family member) and the Circle is definitely more accurate now than last time. Does the algorithm get better over time due to more data? I still suspect that as you go down you end up with a number of close calls in which the algorithm can go either way. If anybody has more details on the relevancy algorithm, I'd still be curious and interested to learn more about it.Anyway, these people are relevant to me and truly help me enjoy my time sharing, talking, discussing, and hanging out on G+. So, thank you to all of you :)TGIF and have a great start to the weekend!P.S. - Typical inconsistent G+ - I could share the Movie Lovers Circle earlier today with about 130 people being notified. However, by mid-morning I couldn't notify the 99 people in this Circle. Now, I can again. But it appears that instead of setting a limit on the number of people in a circle, maybe they've set a limit on the number of people you could notify in a set period of time? Very strange. If anybody has any clue as to why this is, please let me know.2012-10-20 03:24:2710023124CC G+
Alex Grossman27,364It's TGIF so hope you have a great day. Here's a Circle I thought I'd share today for Follow Friday - Movie Lovers Circle. Michael Pedersen0I've just looked at a few of my friends, and now I see why they think that G+ is a ghost town. Folks, you have to circle some people that post good stuff. Here, this circle was shared by +Terrence Lui a while back, and made my already busy stream actually too busy.Doesn't change how useful it is, or how fun it is. Robert „Big Daddy“ Mosko1,841I don't normally share circles.  However I was planning to share this circle tomorrow for #circlesharefriday  .  I will not be available tomorrow, but this is a good thing for me.This circle is highly diverse in views and humor.  It is full of wonderful people who share and engage.  I hope this circle will enhance your G+ experience as much as it does mine.2012-06-21 20:21:462431205CC G+
Terrence Lui22,443Who You Gonna Call?Do you have a problem?  Do you wonder where you are going to go to get help?  If so, this is this is the circle for you.  These are the experts.  They are the ones we go to when we need help. Not only do they know what they are talking about but they will all go out of their way to make sure you get what you need.  Can't get much better than that.  This is the first shared circle I have created.  Heck it is the first shared circle I am even sharing.  I created this circle, with the help of all of you (http://bit.ly/KYlY20), because I think experts are crucial to great community.  Everyone who was mentioned is great.  I went through everyone of the profiles, it took me almost 3 hours, and found some awesome people.   But because I wanted to keep the circle relatively small I curated the list to my own standards. So here it is, a circle of Experts you can find on Google+.  Everyone of them is an expert in some way and will be great engaging with you if you ever need help in their field of expertise.  The list of experts is diverse.  We have the more popular subjects covered like tech, photography and social media.  We also have a strong group of creative people in art, writing, and movies.  And then we have niche interest like running and physics.  So add this circle it if you feel inclined.  I give you my personal guarantee that you will find someone of interest in there or your money back.  Note:  If you were notified of this post you are in the circle.  2012-06-14 18:46:0375634765CC G+

Maybe I'm old and set in my ways, but I don't understand why women want to be able to walk around topless.  If making this completely acceptable on all mediums directly led to men being able to freely swing their junk, would the same people be in favor of it?  Is the argument that a women's breasts shouldn't be considered sexual?  Seriously?

Looks like the dvr is going to get very busy starting in Sept.

The fall television season's just around the corner! Summer flew by didn't it? Here's a list of our returning faves, as well as brand new series premiering soon (like #TheFlash which I'm totally psyched about). New shows are marked in bold.

I've seen a few of the new pilots. Big thumbs up for #RedBandSociety , #HowtoGetAwaywithMurder , #Gracepoint , #ZNation . A few were decent enough and will probably improve as they go along such as #Constantine , #Gotham , #Forever , and #SecretsandLies . Other shows I doubt will be around for long. Lookin' at you #Selfie, #TheWhispers, #FreshOfftheBoat, and #Galavant (a musical?). Not sure what ABC was thinkin' this year to be honest. Yes their shows are diverse, but they're also not very good which is a damn shame.

Let me know which series you plan to watch. I'm really hoping Google+ livens up again once fall TV kicks back in. Fingers crossed ;)

Raymond Burse, who leads Kentucky State University as interim president, will give up $90,000 of his salary so that 24 low wage workers on campus can earn $10.25 an hour.

"I did it to bring the lowest wage employees up to a level where I think they should be," said Burse. ""These are the people who work hard and make the place look good."

Many of the workers including custodians, grounds keepers, and clerical workers were earning the minimum wage in Kentucky, which is $7.25 an hour.

Asked whether he thought that his decision to cut his own salary might start a trend with other university heads, Burse said, "I don't know. I did it as an individual thing and I can afford to do it."

I finally realized why celebrities give their kids strange names. Because it's a mark on the child for life that they had a celebrity parent. Who else gives their kids names like Summer Rain or Apple or whatever bizzar way of naming their child celebrities come out with? The rest of us call our kids John, Julie, David, Ava or something normal, but if you come across a kid called Summer Rain, you know she had either crazy parents or rich celebrity parents or maybe just a mix of both.___But not being able to find your name on a Disneyland keychain takes its toll.  That's why a lot of celebrity kids end up with drug problems.

You won't find love by looking for it.  It will find you, when you stop looking.

Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places

Are you looking for love? Or do you know someone who is? Here’s some valuable advice on where to find it.

When we’re in the market for a relationship, we often do things to make sure others know this. We call our friends, post something on Google+, or change our Facebook relationship status – all in the hopes that someone will notice and fix us up with Mr. or Miss Wonderful.

These are all valid avenues to pursue. But I’d like to suggest something a bit more obvious: Go live your life. Instead of investing all your time clubbing or online dating or asking friends for help, make time to do the things you love to do. Do you enjoy boating? Yoga? Working out at the gym? Then spend a good amount of time doing these things.

When you spend your time doing the things you love, you meet other people who share the same interests with you. (You see where this is going, don’t you?) Odds are you’ll meet someone you are attracted to in one of these areas of interest. And it's easier to initiate a conversation, knowing you already have common interests.

So don’t waste any more time looking for love in all the wrong places. Go do the things you enjoy, and prepare to meet someone new!

Ebola for Beginners: How it Works, Why There’s No Cure, and Why It’s So Hard to Control This Time

By Maren Hunsberger, reposted with permission (originally published at http://goo.gl/ZVwoBU)

The internet is awash with news that one of the world’s foremost Ebola-fighting physicians, Sheikh Umar Khan, has himself been infected with the disease (http://goo.gl/i5T6yj), along with two American aid workers (http://goo.gl/VuQJA9). History’s deadliest outbreak of Ebola is currently sweeping across Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia, having claimed more than 600 lives already. With a mortality rate of anywhere between 40% and 90% (this epidemic's is around 65%), what is it that makes Ebola one of the most lethal diseases in the pantheon of pathogens? Why is there no cure or vaccine? And why is so difficult to control?

The Basics: Ebola’s full name is Ebola haemorrhagic fever, a rather gruesome title (the details of which we’ll address shortly). It’s caused by the Ebola virus (no surprises there), which is a member of the Filoviridae family. For context, viruses can be 50-100 times smaller than bacteria, and come in a variety of shapes. Ebola virus, along with its sister, Marburg virus, is thread-like in appearance. Ebola is also a zoonotic disease (http://goo.gl/Kgo5Fu), which means it is transferrable from non-human animals to humans (and vice versa). In Ebola’s case, humans can catch it from non-human primates such as chimpanzees and gorillas, as well as from rodents, bats, and a few ungulates. Transfer of the virus occurs through close contact with infected bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, and feces, all of which abound after Ebola has done its damage.

A Little Background: The family of zoonotic diseases includes Rabies, Hanta virus, Anthrax, Lyme disease, the ever-infamous Plague (http://goo.gl/8Yeu5c), Toxoplasmosis, and many more, all of which have fascinating life cycles. They also present a unique challenge to communities that live in close contact with the animals that carry these diseases. Animals can often act as a reservoir, meaning they carry the bacteria or virus but present no symptoms themselves. Alternately, the disease can decimate populations of livestock and wildlife upon which a community might depend, contributing to a lack of resources and increased pressure on the human population. Identifying the natural reservoir of a disease is important in containing outbreaks--if you can identify the little bugger that carries the disease without showing it, you can minimize contact with the organism or take steps to control those populations. It’s widely believed that the fruit bat (http://goo.gl/C1qwqd) is the reservoir for Ebola. This is an issue because many communities in Ebola-prone areas consume the fruit that bats snack on (providing easy host-to-host transfer for the virus via bat saliva). Dwellings are also often located near fruit bat colonies. Some outbreaks may also begin when an individual consumes bush meat (http://goo.gl/15isqp), a dead animal carcass found in the vegetation surrounding the community. Consumption of bush meat is traditional in many parts of West Africa, and can sometimes be the only protein that is readily available. If the animal has been killed by Ebola or another zoonotic disease, the individual (and anyone to whom he feeds or sells the meat) can become infected. This ‘human-consumption-of-bushmeat’ infection path is the also leading theory for how the first human became infected with AIDS (http://goo.gl/Z8BZLM).

How it Works: Ebola. The nasty, worm-looking virus that’s causing  damage in West Africa. There are five subtypes (http://goo.gl/vWDxlt) known so far, all named  after their place of origin—the one that’s in the headlines right now is  closely related to the Zaire Ebola virus, the strain with highest mortality rate.  (As of now, no one knows what makes it more deadly than the other  strains). So how does it kill you? When your body produces any kind of  fever, that’s the immune system's response to an infection—inflammation  can help kill whatever’s bothering your body. Ebola essentially sends your  body’s immune system into overdrive. The virus infects the immune cells  that are your first line of defense--monocytes and macrophages. This  means your body is incapable of killing the virus when you first become  infected. The virus then gets to replicate as much as it wants, using your  own primary immune cells as hosts until the infection has grown so large  that the rest of your immune system can’t help but notice. In a valiant effort  to kill the virus, your body produces a fever so high that you go into shock,  your tissues start to degrade and your blood pressure drops, and eventually your organs start to fail.

The virus acts quickly. Initial symptoms of Ebola are varied and often resemble the symptoms of malaria, typhoid fever, influenza or various bacterial infections, all of which are more common than Ebola. It can take too long for Ebola to be diagnosed, and by then the secondary symptoms may have set in: diarrhea, red eyes, vomiting blood, gastrointestinal bleeding from the mouth or rectum, hemorrhaging from the nose and mouth, and bleeding in the brain that may lead to seizures and delirium. After the presentation of these symptoms and a miserable week or so, patients either recover or die from systemic multi-organ failure. While the visible hemorrhaging is what gives the virus its name, it actually presents in less than half of the patients infected with Ebola. Unfortunately for the current outbreak, the Zaire strain is the form of the virus that causes the most severe symptoms.

Why There’s No Cure: Viruses are too small to reproduce on their own, so they have to inject their genome into a host cell. This means that when the host cell replicates, so does the virus. In order for the virus to be able to do its injecting, ‘do all the hard work for me’ trick, it needs to be able to attach to a molecule on the surface of the host cell—this molecule is called a receptor. If the virus doesn’t have the equipment to attach to a certain kind of cell’s receptor, it can’t invade that cell. In fighting viruses, it’s important to identify the virus’ corresponding receptor so you can prevent it from binding and thus prevent it from replicating. With Ebola, this is the missing piece of the puzzle—we don’t know what the receptor is, so we don’t have  a way to stop the virus from proliferating. In humans, Ebola is capable of invading many different kinds of host cells, so it’s possible that it is capable of binding to more than one receptor, making it a dangerously versatile aggressor. Ebola is also notoriously hazardous to study, although many research universities (http://goo.gl/sR7Lk1) and institutions (http://goo.gl/ck7iPj) are working on unravelling its mysteries.

What’s Happening This Time: The current outbreak is the first time that Ebola has rapidly spread to urban areas. With previous incidents of the virus, responders were able to contain the infection within small, rural populations by identifying modes of transmission, points of origin, and mitigating the damage. With large, closely packed populations, however, the virus spreads faster. It’s much harder to identify who has it, who’s given it to whom, and it's difficult to stop people from leaving the area. The West African nations suffering from this outbreak also lack adequate medical facilities and personnel. Without isolation wards and advanced labs, the virus is extremely hard to contain. The infection of the physicians on the ground is a result of the sheer number of patients in their charge. They wore all the proper protective gear, but somewhere in the melee they came into direct contact with infectious fluid. Additionally, some traditional rural practices have accompanied recent transplants to the cities--it is customary in some of the cultures affected by the virus to wash a dead relative’s body by hand before the burial. This is obviously an issue when it comes to preventing disease transmission. To tackle the epidemic without losing the trust and cooperation of those being treated, it's necessary to implement informed, culturally appropriate health care and education.

David Quammen (http://goo.gl/XIS14W) has written an enthralling book, Spillover, about the histories, cultural contexts, and life cycles of the world's zoonotic diseases. His research makes a convincing case that the next human pandemic could be of zoonotic origin. Will it be Ebola? Probably not. In Q&A (http://goo.gl/Vzws4Y) with National Geographic, W. Ian Lipkin, of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University (http://goo.gl/VoTFvE) addresses the fear that Ebola will spread worldwide. He posits that with the health care systems available in high-income countries like the US and the UK, "it's unlikely that we would have widespread disease as a result. We would be on top of it, and we would be able to contain it. Our health care system affords people access to gloves and gowns and personal protective equipment. I don't think there's reason for panic that we're going to be hit with an outbreak of Ebola". All we can do is wait and see, stay updated on developments, and support WHO (http://goo.gl/nT6J0H) and Médecins Sans Frontières (http://www.msf.org/) in their efforts to combat the spread of the disease.

Interesting idea.  I've wondered if something like this could be used to exercise the eyes back into improved vision.

Vision-correcting display makes reading glasses so yesterday

Researchers at UC Berkeley are developing vision-correcting displays that can compensate for a viewer’s visual impairments to create sharp images without the need for glasses or contact lenses. The technology could potentially help those who currently need corrective lenses to use their smartphones, tablets and computers, and could one day aid people with more complex visual problems.

I've often thought that it is better to be singularly great at one thing, rather than only very good at a lot of things.

If this is really true, I've probably been too harsh in my silent judgement of some computer-illiterate users I've supported over the years.

What do you think?  Do you have forgiveness in your heart for users who are probably very good at their job, but come to you with some really "simple" issues?

A pixelized face is generally gone for good, but text is so simple to decipher that ne'er-do-wells can find out what it is just by working backwards. Take a pixelized Social Security number from a screengrab of an email or a PDF, for example. An aspiring identity thief can simply make a copy of the image, sub in a possible SS number, pixelate the image, and see how close the pixelated image matches. It doesn't have to be perfect—a list of a few pretty good guesses will do—and it's a pretty easy process to automate. It's like brute-forcing a password, but with a couple extra steps. It's a cakewalk for anyone who really wants to know.

Everyone needs to own a mirror and look into it on a regular basis.

But don't look at the mirror too much, or hate what you see.

Being self critical
Is the most positive and negative way you can be.

We have to improve in whatever field we become involved in. The problem aisles when we stop improving due to our own self criticism. We know when we have done something right or have gotten it wrong, after a while it becomes a gut instinct and you learn to roll with it. You no longer really need the validation of others but seek it out as some sort of reassurance.

Taring the scales between positive and negative is without doubt going to be one of the hardest things you will learn. Getting it wrong will punish you more than anything you will do with your kit. Learn to listen to that inner voice and set the balance right but don't allow that inner voice to start shouting.___Everyone needs to own a mirror and look into it on a regular basis.

Is there a problem of perception and expectation?  People have come to believe that working hard leads to success.  This is not true.  Working hard is a required ingredient for success, but it is not the complete recipe.

And I don't know how any family who considers themselves poor can afford cable tv packages, dvrs, smartphones/tablets, gaming systems, Starbucks/Jamba Juice, and eating out at $15+ per plate restaurants.  I can only imagine what percentage of total income some families spend on these luxuries.  Smartphones are great entertainment.  If my family has to have a set, who is to blame?  Those bastards at Apple?  Greedy AT&T/Verizon?

John Oliver had a great piece talking about income inequality in the US, and how people perceive it. The key point, which he does a great job of explaining, is how people perceive laws which protect the rich at their own expense as being in their favor, in case they might become rich in the future: there's a profound psychology behind that. As he puts it, "I can clearly see this game is rigged... which is what's going to make this so sweet when I win this thing!"

There are actually many deeper levels to this thought which he doesn't go in to, but which also affect us deeply. The belief that "most people who want to get ahead can make it if they are willing to work hard" -- held by 60% of Americans according to a Pew study -- has as its other side the implication that if you don't get ahead, that means you personally failed.

Apart from the obvious implications this perspective has for policy (are the poor poor because they didn't try hard enough?) this has individual consequences. Michael Kimmel pointed out a very interesting one in the context of gender: to be a (white) man in the US (especially if you come from a "traditional" American home) carries with it a very strong version of this norm, that if you work hard, play by the rules, don't whine, don't ask for things, and so on, you'll succeed: the reward will be a good job, a home, a family, the respect of other men. This is the social status of maleness: it has nothing to do with your genitals, it has to do with being accepted and respected as a man. That's just the same sort of thing that John Oliver is talking about, but with extras on it: it's a belief that if you work hard, and sacrifice a lot, you'll succeed, and thus get the respect of your peers.

So what happens, in this story, if the economy is in the dumps, or if the factories close, or for any one of twenty other reasons you don't succeed? Not only do you not succeed, but you lose your status as a man: which is to say, you lose one of the things that's most core to your self-identification. You lose (you expect) the respect of your peers. The problem with this vision is that it ties absolutely everything up into one basket, and tells you that success or failure is entirely your fault. Which would be a lot better if that were actually true; but (coming back to the economics again), it really isn't, especially today. Most people could never afford to buy the house they grew up in -- not because of anything they did, but because of the relative trajectories of real estate prices and wages. Houses simply cost a lot more than they once did, which is another way of saying that wealth (things you own) is steadily becoming more valuable than your labor. Which is great if you inherit the house, but not so great if you don't -- or if, say, you lose that house in a foreclosure, which therefore not only costs you your home, but that large asset which can give you income (e.g. in the form of not having to pay rent yourself) in the future.

The myth that we "have never been a nation of haves and have-nots; we are a nation of haves and soon-to-haves" (as Sen. Rubio puts it) is captivating, but it doesn't actually make economic sense: Unless the total wealth of the country is increasing quickly enough for literally everyone to be getting not just richer, but enough richer to make a qualitative class leap, it would be physically impossible for this to work. And -- as John Oliver points out, and really, why are you reading this instead of listening to him? He's much funnier than I am -- that belief can be used by crafty politicians to fleece you.___Is there a problem of perception and expectation?  People have come to believe that working hard leads to success.  This is not true.  Working hard is a required ingredient for success, but it is not the complete recipe.
