Lotus Carroll1,772,240This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Instill A Sense of The Bizarre. What is meant by this? Get wacky, odd... put a strange or ironic twist on your self portrait. Get into your "Twilight Zone" state of mind and lets all get a little weird together this month. :) +Annie Weibull, one of our many talented moderators in The Art of Self Portraiture Community, wrote a great tutorial that will help you! Check it out here: http://goo.gl/3qH2vN She is also the contributor of our theme photo on this event. Here is where you enter your ONE Self Portrait with a "Sense of the Bizarre" theme. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST March 31st, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified.InspirationModerators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we'll be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/M7XTQ and ask away! We have categories for questions and discussion and are happy to help with anything. Megan McGuire2,749Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

David Bowden37,155Its been awhile....For over three years I collected and shared an exclusive B&W circle. This circle "was" one of the most shared on G+ for awhile. I would share it once a month with everyone as a part of my personal desire to share more quality B&W images and photographers. The requirement for being in this circle was that the photographer shot at least 60% B&W images (I tend to shoot 80%).There are some excellent photographers and friends here. I encourage you to take a look at their work. While I know that bulk circle sharing is a thing of the past or no longer the norm on G+ (which is a shame) I wanted to re-share a collection of truly inspirational people. You wont be disappointed. Re-share if you like their work</david>2014-05-06 23:16:1649012223

Scott Dawson7,448It's been a while since I've shared a Google+ Showcase Circle so I figured I'd make another one up to share with all of you. This Circle is made up of  mostly new people that I've circled in the past week on Google+.To help build some engagement on Google+ & this Circle I ask that everyone who is in this circle (and anyone else that is reading this) share a recent post of their own, or one you've shared in the last week by adding a link to it in the comments.Doing so, will give us all an opportunity to connect and share with other active Google+ users.I look forward to checking out your favorite posts that I might have missed! There's no requirement to share, +1 or Comment but it's always appreciated if you do.Have a great weekend everyone!2014-03-15 15:13:23501322636

I've been talking about the Chronic Health Journal for a while, and I thought I'd show how I'm using it.  I don't fill out every blank, and it varies every day.  Mostly just mental notes so I can remember what I did three days ago :P

Anyway, if you think this is the sort of thing that could help you or a friend/loved one, check out the Amazon page at http://smile.amazon.com/Chronic-Health-Journal-Regaining-Control/dp/1499683790/ and the 'Look Inside'

Or hit http://www.follandfamily.com/chronic-health-journal/ for sample PDFs.

Today, I give homage to the victims of a senseless act, but more to those have fallen victims to the half-assed limited war bullshit we've endured these past thirteen years. Once upon a time when we were roused to outrage we became an unstoppable force to defend our interests and came to the aid of others that were victims of the same regimes. Now, we have failed to learn the lessons of Vietnam, and still hold that limited warfare is some sort of answer. We need to re-learn that there is nothing limited about war, and if we are to do a thing, we need to commit ourselves to win at all costs.

We either need to get involved, with the aim to win or we need to stand back and deal with the aftermath. Across the Middle Eastern States. There are exceptions, of course, but even they require a commitment to win, and to do what we think is right with the world.

On this, the 13th anniversary of 9/11 I ask us all to ponder what we've done, and our goals from that tragic day, and ask ourselves what we want to do as a nation, particularly keeping in mind the sacrifice of thousands of our brothers and sisters without any current goal.___

Why I love my internet friends.

Procedural Matt offered this explanation to someone that was trying to understand domain, and range on a graph (if you take a standard x-y graph, generally "domain" is the x, or horizontal axis, and "range" is the change in the y, or vertical axis as a result of the function - the equation that plots points on the graph.  Generally).  I think it may well be one of the most beautiful things I've ever read:

Suppose you define a function that models some useful calculation. For instance, I might want to know the number of fucks given by you if I pay you x dollars. We'll call this function f(x).

So if you'd give a fuck for $100, we might define the number of fucks given as y, represented by the function y = f(x) = x/100

Now, let's suppose I have $500. This is the independent variable, because I have the choice of how much to spend. The possible values of this independent variable is zero to five hundred dollars. This is the DOMAIN.

You respond to x by giving y number of fucks. It's the dependent variable, because it's a response to how much money I give you. So, for $100, you give a fuck. For $500 you give 5 times as many fucks. But for nothing, you don't give a fuck. This the RANGE of fucks given, from 0 to 5.

But we all know that f(x) = 0, because no fucks are given.___

Because to harvest them, you have to shake the 'ell' out of them.

Maybe some of you fellow photography nerds can help me out -

I'm looking for a light meter that will do lock-an-hold, i.e.,. fix on the maximum amount of light, and maintain that long enough to get a reading.  Analog would be preferred, but just because.

End use is studio work.  I can chimp a couple of shots with my digital cameras to get it dialed in (I'm familiar enough with the settings there to get close anyway) but I want to start bringing film into the studio which is another animal entirely.

The big thing I need is relatively inexpensive.  I have a fair amount of equipment I need to get my hands on over the next couple of months (hey, anyone have a Manfrotto gear head they want to donate?  I would be eternally grateful) so I need something functional, but will last me until I can upgrade to get more bells and whistles.

From a discussion earlier with an iPhone user migrating to Android, about backups:

note: these notes are based on stock Android, or Android phones that use the default core app cluster (contacts, calendar, etc)

Most of your critical stuff is backed up to Google by default, and will automagically come back when you create an account on a new (or factory reset) phone.

Contacts by default are Google (if you have the FB app it may want to change this.  Check it).  Contacts can be managed at www.google.com/contacts where you can merge contacts (there's a button where Google will try and do it for you) between your personal contacts and people in your G+ circles - there needs to be either an email address or phone number in common for that.  You can also tag people from your G+ circles to "My Contacts"  making them easier to access from your phone.more »

Gmail I assume you know, but other email accounts, make sure they're set for "IMAP" which means those emails are kept on the respective servers, and your phone only makes changes to that.  Anyway, mail.google.com.  *caution* - Gmail counts towards your Google storage

Google's calendar is also dynamic meaning they're synced to the web as soon as you modify it. www.google.com/calendar lets you manage it on the web, as well as add other calendars that you can access both on the web and on your phone (for example, my ex and I have write access to our kid's calendar, so we can reserve days, etc.)

Play is analogous (I think) to the iTunes store.  When you get a new phone, Google Play will attempt to download all the apps in your account - that are appropriate to the device (i.e., not 'tablet only') to your new phone.  I believe the same is for Play Music, etc, but I don't use those services.

Photos are backed up to G+ photos by setting.  *Caution* - anything over 2048 pixels on the long side count towards your storage.

Anything you create or store on Google Drive is kept on the cloud, and instantly accessible to be downloaded to your new phone.  *Caution* - Google Drive counts towards your storage.

what is not backed up automagically

Phone Settings, which are generally irrelephant because your new phone is likely to be a different hardware, and possibly operating system ("flavor" of Android).

Any media you've added by USB - music, movies, etc that are not handled by a cloud-based server.  I.e., if you copy music from your computer, you will have to copy it again to your new device.

Anything you've downloaded to your phone, but not backed up to Drive or some other cloud storage.

Application data - you're awesome Solitaire record is gone, baby.  If you're a 23rd lvl wizard on Farmbook Moon that's gone too, unless otherwise specified.  Likewise any 3rd party app that doesn't have it's own backup scheme.

Games that have been removed from the Play store -  Sometimes an app may not be compatible with your new phone some reason (forward is rare.  If you downgrade Android this is much more likely).  More often, though, you've been playing Super-Mega Midget Monkey Wrestling V the app has been pulled by either the developer of by Google because the WWE threatened to sue.  These games/apps will remain on your phone, but they cannot be transferred to your new device because they're just gone.  Case in point, that super-popular Angry Birds riff that the developer pulled because apparently making $53,000 per day freaked him out a little.

*NOTE 3rd-party apps may (okay, probably will) affect your backups.  If you use these apps - particularly stuff like your calendar - they are often tied to that application.  If you use an app tied to a phone manufacturer, this data may not be recoverable even with backup if you change manufacturers, because you may not be able to install the app.  If you do use these for critical apps, make sure the data is portable*___

If you ever want to test your photographic skills, come with us to SacAnime sometime (the next is in January).  Set yourself to manual, load up your best variable focal length lens, and just run with it.  You'll never run out of shots to take, but you've got to be super-fast.  Most of the cosplayers will happily pose for you, but not if you aren't ready.  Figure you've got about 30 seconds to get a shot.  Less if you're worried about background clutter.  Add to that, the lighting constantly changes.  In minutes, you can easily go from shooting ISO200 to ISO1600 (or as high as you dare) if you're like me and don't particularly like the lighting a hotshoe or grip-mount flash makes.  Oh, and the lighting is so variable inside that you have to work off a hunch, because the spot meter will be bouncing all ober the place like... well for the sake of decorum it bounces a lot.

Here, I was set up for something like 1/40s at f/4 and had to quickly pop to 1/100 at f/8 within a manner of seconds, and it still came out at +1ev.  I like to think I compensated pretty well though.  Not really cosplay, but the makeup, ears, and how it worked on her was unresistably cute___

There's something very weird about sending your work to the Library of Congress. Somehow it crosses a line between "oh hai, I maded this" to "jeebus, this is srs"

Anyway, I'm in the process of making the Chronic Health Journal an "official thing" which is a new venture for me.  Maybe it'll get me off my arse to actually copyright some of my photos.

What's the cost of this photo?

I'm not talking about the value of the photo, because that's largely an intangible based on subject, provenance (photographer), market whims, and individual desires.  Value, or what people are willing to pay for it, is as fickle as the wind.

So, cost.  Equipment is certainly a factor, but really it's a nebulous one.  A professional photographer (not me) uses the best equipment they can afford, but they can also do a lot with a lot less equipment.  Their investment allows them to take consistently superior photos.  This is made even more nebulous because in some way or another, the equipment also needs to be amortized across its expected lifetime.  For example, the average prosumer DSLR is good for 80-100K shutter actuations (MTBF) before the mechanism fails. In the case of this photo, between the camera body, lens, and editing software, roughly $2500 which might cover the cost of just the camera body for a pro-line camera.

That investment cost is significant, but since it's not easily calculated, let's set it aside sake of discussion.

Something that's a lot easier to calculate is time.  It's also a variable number, but we can start assigning a value to it.  An easy way is to make it personal - take your hourly wage and double it.  After taxes, fees, and regulations, that's about what it costs an employer to give you a job.  Still a moving target, but for purposes of discussion consider the photographer your peer,  and figure their time is just as valuable as yours.  Between driving to this location, taking the photos that make up this pano, and processing, this took about an hour and a half, accounting for me getting two good photos for this location.

FWIW, an art photo (for example, one of my projector pieces) can easily take 6-8 hours or more to complete though other costs are generally much lower.

Next is 'business' costs.  A photographer selling photos is paying a minimum of $15/mo just to have their photos somewhere, or they're giving up a much larger percentage of the asking price in return.  FWIW I pay about $23/mo, not including personal internet costs.  If I had the front end of my site hosted elsewhere, that number would be higher.  There are a lot of other costs, but a lot of them are intangible, including marketing on social media and other places.  This is hard to break down "per photo" but it's a much more important cost than, say, equipment because it never goes away, and for someone trying to make a name in the market, not even defraying some of that cost is demoralizing at best.  I run well in the red, but I've reconciled myself to that because there's a lot of stuff that wouldn't work in a lot of homes.  My own house is....different.

So there's some rough numbers to chew on, but let's cast all that aside, as they're all costs of someone trying to sell their work.

Instead, let's talk about 'some guy' taking this photo, and posting it on the internet.  And, for the sake of argument, I'm going to put myself in the place as 'some guy' since I have a better handle on the numbers.

We're casting aside the physical and emotional costs of travel, people, etc that are issues for me, and just concentrating on raw numbers.

For me to replace this photo, at a minimum:  $1300 round-trip airfare for one.  $130/night lodgings.  $50/day car rental (based on a weekend).   $40/day food and coffee (conservative.  Kauai is expensive to eat in).   So, what, $1700-$2000 assuming the weather cooperates?

Obviously, this is a high-ish ball example.  Driving up into the mountains to stand in the snow at 6AM only costs me $500-$600.  Going to my favorite place locally may only cost $20-$50.

I am not trying to place a value on my photos. I am trying to place a cost on an image that one might find on the internets.  It doesn't matter if it was shot with a smartphone or a high-end DSLR, someone went through a an appreciable amount of work and money to take that shot. There was a cost, and that should be taken into consideration before it's (particularly) used without permission.___

I think everyone agrees that medications (especially) must be proven safe before they're allowed on the market right?

Let's set the wayback machine, Sherman, to the late 50's.  A German company developed this awesome new sedative.  It was not a barbiturate, which made it especially appealing.  You couldn't overdose on it either.  So, it was deemed totally safe and sold OTC.  At one point, it actually rivaled aspirin in some markets.

So, in 1960, some brilliant doctor figured out that it also alleviated morning sickness, and started encouraging expectant mothers to take it.  A year later, he started noting severe birth defects and noted a correlation.  At the same time, "flipper babies" started showing up in Germany and other places.  By early 1962 the drug was banned in most countries.

In the US, there were already FDA medical trials in place,  and so it hadn't been approved for market here yet.  When the S-- hit the fan people started publicly thanking the head of the FDA for digging her heels in and waiting because there were too many questions.  So the US was largely spared.

The net result was new legislation requiring that any new drug brought to market be shown that they are both safe, and effective.  Today that generally involves a reasonable expectation that that drug be safe for human trials before it's even tested on humans.

That drug was thalidomide.  If you're in your forties, ask your parents and watch them shudder.

Now, where I'm going with all this -
Prior to, and including thalidomide, there was no real testing protocol.  Manufacturers came up with something new, and clinical trials consisted of giving it to people and seeing if they died or not - there wasn't even a requirement that they treated the disease it was created for.  Thalidomide testing in the US involved some 20,000 humans before it was stopped.

So, if you're still reading, if it means a few animals have to be sacrificed before something is tested on humans....I'm okay with this.  We, as the dominant (well, except maybe the dolphins) species on the planet have the task of being stewards of the world we've created, but at the same time we also have a higher commission to do what's best for us as a species.  Often they overlap, but on an individual creature basis, a judgement call needs to be made.  I side with the hoomans here.

On the other hand, we're on a cusp of technology.  We're but a few years away of creating human tissue to run trials on, but there are also definite limits - we could test on human tissue, but it's very, very limited.  Drug testing requires testing on systems, which would effectively mean we would have to create partial (if not whole) genetically identical humans to test on.  At some point a moral decision would have to be made because, after all, we're creating humans for testing purposes.

To drive the point home, let's look at mice, probably the stalwart of most testing and research.  What kind of mouse do you want?  Would you like one for cancer research?  Diebeetus research?  Immune system research?  Take your pick - http://jaxmice.jax.org/research/index.html.

Are we willing to breed humans for this research?  I sincerely hope not, because "human" won't mean what it does today - there's a mantra in some Sci-Fi: "clones are property" - but is that what we really want?

So yeah, tl;dr I'm perfectly okay with using lab animals for useful research, so long as it's done as humanely as possible given the nature of the research.

Note:  This does not mean I condone jamming mascara in bunny eyes.___

Apparently copyright.gov is down until sometime Sunday, so I can't figure out where to send things until then :P

I shared this yesterday, but late (as usual).  This is most of my favorite shot from my recent trip to Kauai.

And, to celebrate some new landscapes, I'm offering 35% off all my photos at gallery.squareheadphotograpy.com, particularly http://gallery.squareheadphotography.com/Art/Places  The coupon code is kauairocks and all prints under 20" on the long side come matted and signed, ready to frame.

Also, if you're interested in one of the panos, please contact me separately for a special deal.

So, these are my favorites from our trip to Kauai.  I hope you enjoy them 1/8th as much as I enjoyed taking them :)

Most of these are available in my galleries at http://gallery.squareheadphotography.com/Art/Places and are on sale through the end of the month for 35% off with the coupon code kauairocks.  As always, sizes under 20" long come signed, matted, and ready for you to put in a standard frame.  If you're interested in one of the panoramics, contact me privately and I can cut you a special deal on those separately.

Either way, I hope they make you want to visit +Kauai  :)___I shared this yesterday, but late (as usual).  This is most of my favorite shot from my recent trip to Kauai.

In case you were wondering how I use my copy of the Chronic Health Journal

I've been talking about the Chronic Health Journal for a while, and I thought I'd show how I'm using it.  I don't fill out every blank, and it varies every day.  Mostly just mental notes so I can remember what I did three days ago :P

Anyway, if you think this is the sort of thing that could help you or a friend/loved one, check out the Amazon page at http://smile.amazon.com/Chronic-Health-Journal-Regaining-Control/dp/1499683790/ and the 'Look Inside'

I can justify the $580 current bid to Kat, because this is nearly exactly what I want, but beyond that, woof.

I wrote a fair bit about photographic philosophy, so in a rare bit of hubris, I thought I'd share it wider.

[concerning the idea that cameras only refract light and for a mere sliver of time, and therefore can't tell a story]  I have to respectfully disagree.  A holiday snap, yes, you're absolutely right there.  A photograph, a really good one, the photographer tells a story, whether it be real, or something from the photographer's mind.

Photojournalists routinely do this.  They will walk into a catastrophe or a triumph, and tell the story through their images, often better than the print that accompanies it.  Their best photos leave an emotional imprint that is somehow transferred from the subject to the viewer.  Is it the whole story?  of course not.  The whole story can never be told, even with a million cameras and a million more videocameras. There a... more »

There are too many factors, and too many people, and too many things happening behind the scenes even with all that recording equipment.  The only way we can really know the whole story is as all the data we have is filtered through time.  And then because of all the data, the detail is actually lost other than a few bits here and there.  And historically, those details have been photographs.

Street photographers are all about stories.  They go out into the streets, searching for that one vignette that tells a story all on it's lonesome.  And what they find can be the richest of the rich, or the lowest of the destitute, but on the street there are always hundreds of stories to be had. Just sit on a park bench for an hour and you'll know what I mean.

Now, for the sake of a label, we'll say that [redacted] is doing boudoir photography.  Here his 'job' is to capture the essence of the woman and what it is that makes her beautiful (both inside and out).  In his particular case, he's showing us an entire series based on one woman, and is highlighting different parts of who she is through photography and words.  IMO he needs less words, but then a lot of people can't get past "boobs".  In a very real way, though, he is telling us a story.  Not of her life, but "who she is".  It's subtle, but it's there.  It's easier to see if you follow the whole series though.

Art photographers (myself humbly included) tend to go two ways.  One, they may tell a story.  Look, for example, at a landscape an art photographer may do.  There's always something going on, often involving people.  It may be a busy train station, or it may be a family playing on the beach.  There's almost always movement, and a story to be had.  Compare this to a straight "landscape photographer".  They prefer wide open scenes unsullied by human influence wherever possible.   When they do integrate mankind's droppings, they invariably create a story about that thing, and where it is.

Then there's the art photographer that leans towards the abstract.  I'll use my own photography for as an example, because that's what I'm most familiar with.  Sometimes, I may express a story of pure emotion, or create a story
 - which is not unlike what my journalistic and street photographer friends often find, or I may create a scene where the viewer is compelled to fill in their own story, which in concept (at least) is similar to a lot of boudoir.

More than often, though, any photograph has some, or all of these elements in some balance to each other.

But there's always a story.___
