Megan McGuire2,744Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

David Bowden37,155Its been awhile....For over three years I collected and shared an exclusive B&W circle. This circle "was" one of the most shared on G+ for awhile. I would share it once a month with everyone as a part of my personal desire to share more quality B&W images and photographers. The requirement for being in this circle was that the photographer shot at least 60% B&W images (I tend to shoot 80%).There are some excellent photographers and friends here. I encourage you to take a look at their work. While I know that bulk circle sharing is a thing of the past or no longer the norm on G+ (which is a shame) I wanted to re-share a collection of truly inspirational people. You wont be disappointed. Re-share if you like their work</david>2014-05-06 23:16:1649012223

Scott Dawson7,448It's been a while since I've shared a Google+ Showcase Circle so I figured I'd make another one up to share with all of you. This Circle is made up of  mostly new people that I've circled in the past week on Google+.To help build some engagement on Google+ & this Circle I ask that everyone who is in this circle (and anyone else that is reading this) share a recent post of their own, or one you've shared in the last week by adding a link to it in the comments.Doing so, will give us all an opportunity to connect and share with other active Google+ users.I look forward to checking out your favorite posts that I might have missed! There's no requirement to share, +1 or Comment but it's always appreciated if you do.Have a great weekend everyone!2014-03-15 15:13:23501322636

So, dinner as it turned out:

Steak, marinaded in a Balsamic vinaigrette, seared on the grill and finished to everyone's individual perfection in the oven, and topped with a glaze made from the leftover marinade and a bit of butter.

Pasta, tossed with a Parmesan cheese sauce (basically Parmesan cheese, butter, and a bit of rosemary and pepper - alfredo is just too heavy)

Greens were haricot verts - French green beans but too late I discovered they were freezer burned and not even a bit of bacon grease could save that :/

I'll do the write-ups on the first two in the next couple of days, so keep an eye out if you're interested - or say something in the comments and I'll tag you in the comments when I do.

In other news, I really need to get a new setup so I can do food shots in the studio again :/

You know, +Lady Gaga can be weird as heck (which I can empathize with) but when she pulls out the stops, it's easy to see that she's got more talent than most of her contemporaries combined.

More modern sound, and multi-track chorus, but it's a damn catchy song.  More than enough for me to want to check out the rest of the album anyway (yeah, I'm old and still buy CDs).

Good to see my childhood Idol is still rockin' :)

I've been really remiss in plugging this, and I apologize.  It's been a hectic few.

Anyway, Kat and I are organizing a photowalk/sleepover in the Donner/Truckee area November 9th thru the 11th (Friday to Sunday).  The general idea is that we'll hit Donner lake for a sunset (and maybe sunrise), explore some of the old train tunnels (light painting anyone?) and generally just running around a lot.  I'm still working on specifics so any ideas are welcome.  The idea of going down to Tahoe's North Shore for a bit of night street photography has been bandied about as well.

So the deal is, my employer has a cabin up there, and while there's not a ton of beds, there's plenty of sleeping bag room for anyone that wants to stay for free.  Otherwise, there are a couple of hotels in the area, but I figured we'd do breakfast and dinner at the cabin, and maybe even picnicon S... more »

So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?

I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way.

We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is free, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.

Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well.

I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however.

edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapes___I've been really remiss in plugging this, and I apologize.  It's been a hectic few.

The only stipulation is that I'm getting the cabin for free, so we've got to leave it as least as nice as we found it.  It's not an easy thing to get a time slot for, and I'll get some serious shit, or have to stay really late on Sunday to make sure it's cleaned up.

It's fun, and will give you a sample of how it will sound when I do it for real. This originally was written as a 50 shades of grey pitch, however
kinda missed the deadline. So we'll see where it lands.....
Hopefully, it will spark up your love life! I personally think it's one of the

When the budget allows, I'll probably become an Android Wear convert, despite poo-pooing the idea in the past, and here's why:

I've got two things working against me.  One being a chronic pain issue from severe foot trauma a number of years ago.  Recently I had to revert to using a cane for any real distance.  Two, I've a mental health condition, and the two definitely feed off each other.  I have a really good health journal (check it out at http://www.follandfamily.com/chronic-health-journal/) and am pretty good at logging pain levels, diet, sometimes even mental health, but getting good physical health metrics have stymied me.

I've been using a phone app called Pacer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cc.pacer.androidapp&hl=en) which is pretty decent, but it requires me to have the phone on my person at all times.  That's a bigweakne... more »

I've been using a phone app called Pacer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cc.pacer.androidapp&hl=en) which is pretty decent, but it requires me to have the phone on my person at all times.  That's a big weakness at work, and an even bigger weakness on the weekends, since in both cases I often leave the phone on the desk or table for the many short trips around.

Obviously, some sort of wearable health monitor is the step I need to keep better tabs on myself, and to which I've been doing a fair amount of research.

Nearly all the FitBit-like devices are accelerometer-based.  The tech is pretty straight-forward:  The heart of the device is a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Structure) chip that measures acceleration and deceleration in multiple axes and can be interpreted as movement by a processor.  It's the same technology that on one end makes programs like Pacer work on your smartphone, and on the other end triggers the air bag in your car.  Depending on the algorithms used to interpret that data they have various levels of accuracy, but the key thing is day-to-day consistency anyway.

So to get something like that, you're looking at something in the range of $60-$150, right?  That's repeating functionality that I can already get just by remembering to keep my phone in my pocket.

What's the next level, then?  Tracking heart rate and possibly galvanic response (how sweaty you get).  The two techs are fairly flawed - heart rate is measured optically based on changes in the skin, and works best on the inside of your wrist where the blood vessels are more pronounced.  Galvanic response IMO is a non-starter since it can't really differentiate between a good workout and a really hot day.

Accelerometer and heart rate monitor then.  I really want the latter because while counting steps can be correlated to my pain levels, actually tracking my heart rate could give me a better insight to actual exercise.  Obviously none of the solutions are medical-grade, but hey.  Over time I think it's a good metric so long as it's relatively consistent.

Now, I'm sure you're wondering where Android Wear comes in.  The Basis Carbon Steel is a favorite by PCMag (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2416738,00.asp) and does pretty much what I want, but it comes at a price point ($200 MSRP, $149 on sale) which is pretty steep compared to a lot of it's single-purpose brethren, even with adding that heart rate monitor.   Compare that to the Samsung Gear Live (http://www.techradar.com/us/reviews/phones/mobile-phone-accessories/samsung-gear-live-review-1256537/review/5)  which comes in at about the same price point.

With both, you get pedometer and heart rate monitor. The Samsung doesn't have the galvanic measurements or the temperature measurements which, as I mentioned earlier are pretty much useless in my local environment.  In both cases the heart rate monitor can be iffy, but from what I can tell that's largely a software problem that is endemic across all devices that measure that.  I think under normal circumstances they both seem okay though.

So now, we have two devices at the same price point that do the things I want, and here's where the real stuff happens.  The Gear Live, like it's brothers, run Android, and they're not like the smart watches of yore. You get pretty good health monitoring, plus notifications, plus Google Now, all for about the same price.

Yeah, I could have a single-purpose device, or for the same money I could get something the same, or better, that also turns my 'fitness device' into an extension of the main thing that, sadly, rules my day-to-day life.

I think I'm a convert, I just need the cash to buy one, but at the same time once I have the cash they only promise to be so much better.

Please don't try this at home though.  I have an intimate knowledge of this stretch of track, including behavior of trains and where and how the signals work.  Even still, it's risky.  I wouldn't have shot this anywhere else but this specific location.

That said, I think I should torture my dear +Christina Lihani.  It's five B&W photos in five days, both new and old.  Bring out your favorites both new and old, and sucker invite a new person every day :)

Lest I forget day three of my #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge , brought to you by +J. Rae Chip

This one is one of my favorite projector pieces, entitled "Waiting".

If you're not familiar with my projector series, I use sketches, doodles, paintings, found pieces, and (in this case) photo prints projected over my subject using an old 1950's opaque projector.  FWIW the location the original photo was shot in is now a pile of rubble awaiting the new Sacramento Kings basketball arena.

So whom should I victimize yet... hmmm... How about +Eustace James.  I'm sure someone tagged him but I didn't see it :)

So +Scott Krichau is making me share five random facts about myself.  Blame him.

My studio name is "Square Head Photography" because mine is.

Sometime in my twenties I developed an allergy to various petroleum products.  Just for fun this includes polyester and smog.

I've lived in my current house longer than I've ever lived anywhere else in my life.

I have a psychological aversion to eating anything with tentacles, due to trauma when I was nine and living in the Philippines.

I have far too many earworms rattling around in my head for anyone's good.  If you try it, I'll probably come up with something worse.

Just for fun I'm going to tag in +kat Folland, +Dion V, +Andrew Clifton-Brown, +David Buckwalter  and +Gord Birch as my five suckers.

Here's what I'm thinking. I've taken a couple of steaks out, so...
Marinade for a bit in a balsamic vinaigrette (base for another recipe so I know what I'm starting with) sear to a light char on the grill and finish in the oven for those that want more then bleu. Take the vinaigrette and simmer in a pan to thicken a bit, probably with some un-specified bits, and add a pat of butter to make a sauce out of it.

Details are still in the air but I already do something similar so I don't think it can go too wrong.

Just a thought if you're giving out candy for Halloween this year.

We started giving out glowsticks along with candy a couple of years ago, partially for fun, but mostly because we live in an older neighborhood without sidewalks and no street lighting. The kids even the older ones) love them probably more than the candy, and the parents appreciate it too.

The ones I buy (linked) are $25 for 50, so a mere $0.50 each, last pretty long for their size and come with their own lanyards (assembly required) and well worth it.

+Karen Schumacher this is IMO one of the best collaborative pieces in the late part of the 20th Century, at least.  It's not a competition, it's what happens when two Greats decide to get together and do something that's better than the sum of their parts.

I was just reminded of this, so I thought I'd share it with y'all that want a good spy/thriller novel to read this evening.  It's the affidavit against our esteemed California Senator Leeland Yee, who was arrested a few months ago on charges including racketeering and gun-running.

This really isn't a new recipe at Chez Folland, but I've modified it a bit and added a number of annotations for clarity.

This one's a rich dish, so it's great as a meal on cold days, or as a bitchin' side all year 'round.  Also, it's what I would consider a Tier II recipe - Ultimately do-able by anyone, but it requires a good 20 minutes of constant work and equal attention to what's going on.  Sauces can be tricky, though this one isn't as bad as others.

Resharing this from the other day, since it's not in the middle of the night.  If you're familiar with the little boxes S&B Golden Curry (paste) in the Asian aisle of the supermarket, you'll know the directions (or lack thereof) are rather intimidating.  So, here's how I do it.

Well, S&B's Golden Curry, but despite the marginal directions I think I've finally figured out how it should be cooked.  I'll write it up tomorrow.

FWIW USGA rules to not mention bears or any other animal on the course, but my guess is that a bear would constitute an "abnormal ground condition" in this particular case - the bear stole the ball lol - so the player would get relief and be able to drop a substitute ball not nearer to the hole from where it encountered the bear.  If the bear simply moved the ball I suspect he'd have to play it where the bear dropped it.

If someone working for the USGA wants to chime in, I'd love to hear something more official.

Greetings!  New to the community and thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm coming out of a 20-some-odd year film hiatus (my trusty Yashica FX-3 was stolen in the early 90's), and though I have a small collection - some working, some needing repair - of cameras, I've really wanted to get into medium format for a while.  Doubly so since my wife was gifted a Ricoh Twinflex a while back, which she doesn't use since I haven't really had anything equivalent (and we were missing a few minor things like a light meter).  So, a couple of weeks ago I found a great deal on this RZ65 Pro II and bit the bullet - it's got pretty much everything I've wanted in 120mm.  Looking forward to have a chance to shoot with it, and participate here!

Road Trip

For folks in NorCal or anyone that will be in the area...

The short answer is that +kat Folland and I are putting together a Fall trip to the Truckee area Nov7-Nov9  (Nov6 pending).

For long details, check the link.  I'll be putting together an Event in the next couple of days.

*Sierra Photowalk*

So, here's the deal.  I have a cabin reserved November 7th-9th the Truckee/Donner Lake area.  IIRC it has two bedrooms and a loft, but can accommodate 15-20 people including sleeping bags.

Yeah, I know.  Sleeping bags.  But, accommodations are free, so long as everyone promises to clean up after themselves (the cabin is owned by my employer).

And I'm sure you're asking yourself 'why that weekend?'.  Well, a couple of reasons.  It's the shoulder season (between summer and ski), so there won't be a ton of people around, there's a decent chance there'll be snow, but not stupid snow, and it coincides with the full moon.  Not so great for star trails, I know, but makes for some fun night-time landscapes and the like.  Clouds permitting, of course.  But we're also close enough to the North Shore of Tahoe that we could do some night/street stuff there if the weather isn't cooperating.

Now, there is one catch - I'm not super familiar with the I-80 side of Tahoe, so I'm putting on the hook enlisting +Elizabeth Hahn for some help with ideas, and wouldn't mind some other input as well.  Think of it as a crowd-sourced non-workshop.

And, in hindsight, I'm going to request Thusday 11/6 off as well so anyone that wants to go up early can join us then.

If you've been notified of this, it means you're in my "North Bay Photowalks" circle. If you'd like to be taken off the notification list for this sort of thing, please let me know.  Also, if you weren't notified, and want to be for this sort of thing, let me know too.  I'll be making a separate circle for the trip so those that can't make it won't be spammed further.___Road Trip

Save the Date

I'll share this again tomorrow, but we're plotting a trip into the Sierras Nov. 7 through Nov. 9th, roughly corresponding with the full moon.  Hopefully there will be snow, but either way it's the shoulder season so cheap seats can be had.  Regardless of the season there will be sweeping vistas and hopefully a few surprises.

Currently, I'm pursuing two options - rent a few condos at Kirkwood, or something in the Donner area.  The latter has a bit more appeal as if I can pull it off, I can score free lodgings for 20-25 people if y'all don't mind sleeping bags.  Either way, this is a Thing, and I'm putting in for time off tomorrow, and inquiring on lodging at Donner.

Let me know here, or PM me if you're interested.

Today, I give homage to the victims of a senseless act, but more to those have fallen victims to the half-assed limited war bullshit we've endured these past thirteen years. Once upon a time when we were roused to outrage we became an unstoppable force to defend our interests and came to the aid of others that were victims of the same regimes. Now, we have failed to learn the lessons of Vietnam, and still hold that limited warfare is some sort of answer. We need to re-learn that there is nothing limited about war, and if we are to do a thing, we need to commit ourselves to win at all costs.

Yes, that means our brothers, sisters, and even ourselves may die along the way, but how many of our brothers and sisters have already died in a police action that has no real goal, and has no end. We are fighting a battle of attrition where the only losers are us.

We either need to get involved, with the aim to win or we need to stand back and deal with the aftermath. Across the Middle Eastern States. There are exceptions, of course, but even they require a commitment to win, and to do what we think is right with the world.

On this, the 13th anniversary of 9/11 I ask us all to ponder what we've done, and our goals from that tragic day, and ask ourselves what we want to do as a nation, particularly keeping in mind the sacrifice of thousands of our brothers and sisters without any current goal.___
