Chris Robinson24,784General Science Circle- Final UpdateLast August I started this General Science Database (http://goo.gl/tp06X), which could be uploaded into Google+ using the import contacts feature. Over the last year, the database has morphed into a shared circle and more recently into +Science on Google+: A Public Database. Due to the increasing overlap with the +Science on Google+: A Public Database, this will be the last time that I will be updating and sharing this circle. If you are a scientist, science teacher, or science writer, please feel free to add your profile/page to the +Science on Google+: A Public Database by filling out this form (http://goo.gl/yEg7M) and circling +Science on Google+: A Public Database. 2012-07-25 14:47:31300101339CC G+

Watching right now. You can find it on Hulu. Very good documentary about bees, nature and love. Did you know, that bears are not looking for honey in the hive? They search for bee brood.

"Within 4-5 weeks of its life bee produces 1 teaspoon of honey. To get a kilo of honey, a swarm must fly the distance equal to flying around the world. Bees hold the toxins in their body. They sacrifice themselves to ensure that their larvae will get the best possible food. (...) 4 bln bees has been working the whole month for us to be able to produce mountains of almonds. Even vegetarians are dependent on mass rearing of animals."

Bad things happen even to the biggest players on the market and even during Easter. It may not have a tremendous impact on their business (I guess, they have DR), but damage to Samsug image may be significant. I'm sure they use the latest technology: automatic failover, virtualization, etc. It's obvious, that there are scenarios, which may cause a total interruption in IT services. If disaster recovery and ITC continuity standards are in good shape - it may be a starting point to assume ITC availability, but in the next iterations of BCP, business should plan for total unavailability of IT.

Computational Photography Starts to Mature.

Computational photography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computational_photography), the use of advanced algorithms and software to simulate powerful (and expensive) cameras such as DSLRs, starts to make an impact in the latest update to the Google Camera application on current Android (4.4+) phones. The default Google Camera for Android already shipped with an impressive second-generation HDR mode (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-dynamic-range_imaging), but the latest update includes a Lens Blur mode that allows tiny phone camera sensors and lenses to simulate a big lens and big aperture in order to reproduce shallow depths of field or "bokeh" effects. This is another great example of software eating the world.

The image below demonstrates the new camera application using the crappy front-facing 1.3MP camera on my Nexus 5... more »

The story of incredible Maria Skłodowska-Curie. It seams that after 100 years the world didn't change much. She had to face xenophobia, prejudice against the women and hatred towards science in general (as it was perceived "not needed" by some of her opponents). The press quickly came from admiration to insult. Her views on education were that children should be taught science since the very early age and by the best possible teachers. Something we didn't achieve in this modern times. Her daughter was also awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which proves, that her ideas about education were right. Great article.

Heartbleed is an interesting case of a "black swan" scenario. Something which was almost impossible to happen, therefore there was no plan in place. So everybody improvised:

"In the end, there’s no roadmap for this kind of disclosure because there’s never been a problem this big before. Fixing the bug in secret means setting priorities, choosing which companies to loop in and which to keep out, and there’ll always be reason to second-guess those decisions. But as the web grows, it’s a problem the industry may need to confront again."

I highly recommend this article.

As usual the comments are the best :) Under this film from NYC subway, there is heated conversation about pros and cons of cars and public transport. And here is just one example of how entertaining it is:

"By this sophomoric logic, you can't drive a Hyundai Sonata unless you're a composer. You can't drive a VW Golf unless you are on the PGA tour. The Ford Focus is limited to optometrists and pro photographers. Subaru Outback? You better be an Australian on walkabout."

This isn't good news.  Not good for Central America, and certainly not good for the rest of the World. It is especially bad for the producers of coffee and bananas (and related industries). Here is a link to information on the Hurricane Mitch and its effects (70% destroyed crops in Honduras). And it was a small hurricane compared to the upcoming El Nino:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_Hurricane_Mitch_in_Honduras
