The Milky Way Galaxy over Devils Tower

Was Devils Tower once an explosive volcano? Famous for its appearance in films such as Close Encounters, the origin of Devil's Tower in Wyoming, USA is still debated, with a leading hypothesis holding that it is a hardened lava plume that probably never reached the surface to become a volcano. The lighter rock that once surrounded the dense volcanic neck has now eroded away, leaving the dramatic tower. High above, the central band of the +Milky Way Galaxy arches across the sky. Many notable sky objects are visible, including dark strands of the Pipe Nebula and the reddish Lagoon Nebula to the tower's right. Green grass and trees line the moonlit foreground, while clouds appear near the horizon to the tower's left. Unlike many other international landmarks, mountaineers are permitted to climb Devils Tower.

What’s the best new work of art in the world? Good question. The most interesting and mind-bending new artwork that I’ve encountered is a remarkable garden in Paris titled Who to Believe?, recently designed and assembled by Francois Abelanet. We’re accustomed to the idea that paint can form an illusion. But it’s a bit startling to find this effect created with grass and trees. Yet this is the conceit of Abelanet’s work, made from 3,500 square feet of turf and many truckloads of dirt and straw and assembled with the help of about 90 carefully supervised gardeners.

Everyone needs Him... In one way or another... Whether they realize it or not... Everyone needs Him.

These girls' needs are obvious and visible to any human eye... cutting, bulimia, party life style, abuse, coping with loss, teenage pregnancy... but there are less obvious ones... often ones that we try to deny or maybe we just do not see them ourselves or even feel that they are there... just because your needs are not out in the open for everyone to see, it does not mean that you can hide them from Him.

I've always been interested in how music and mathematics relate. I suppose this might be because my dad went far enough into a music degree (almost a doctorate before school got on his nerves) that most of my questions about music theory he'd describe in quite excessive detail as to how they relate to physics and math. I still remember him teaching me how to draw the golden ratio when I was ten or so. I didn't really get it until I watched π  years later, a wildly introspective movie.

I find it sad that a lot of people think that art and science are divergent disciplines. I think the more you understand about the mechanics of things, the more you can resonate with other people artistically. We all recognize patterns in things that we're not even aware of noticing. 

I don't know why people seem to be so afraid of combining the two. Or of learning things theydon'... more »

Amazing half-animal, half-plant! Meet Elysia Chlorotica!

The Elysia Chlorotica sea slug is not like most sea slugs.  Scientists refer to this animal as being "solar-powered," since it undergoes many plant-like processes and resembles a leaf!  This creature has chloroplasts that allow it to convert sunlight into energy, so yes, it undergoes photosynthesis.

The Elysia Chlorotica sea slug, unlike some of the more exotic animals we see here on Greenamajigger, can be found close to home!  By close, I mean the east coast of the United States.

Feeding on algae, this animal has a weird way of sustaining life.  It needs to eat plants to maintain its existence, but the only thing that it takes from what it eats are chloroplasts, which help it undergo photosynthesis more easily!  So, is the elysia chlorotica a plant?  Yes.
