Big changes in TaeKwonDo rules!
Firstly the competition area has been decreased from 12x12m to 8x8m to make a fight more exciting. As there is less space for the competing athletes to move around, there is a higher chance of them fighting each other.
The second key change is scoring by punch. Previously, points were not given for punching but, in the new rule, a punch with a strong impact directly to the chest gets one point. This aims to create a variety of scoring techniques and excitement.
The third important rule change is the number of points given to different strikes. In the past, a kick to the head was worth two points and a spinning back kick to the head was worth three points.

This always amuses me. It's just simple physics (mass x acceleration = force)
These were the results of the test:
capoeira
(ground roundhouse)
speed: 159 km
force: 816 kg
karate
(front kick)
speed: 114 km
force: 195 kg
muay thai
(roundhouse)
speed: 209 km
force: 635 kg
taekwondo
(roundhouse)
speed: 219 km
force: 1043 kg
(I don't know why the karate practitioner did a front kick. It would have been more interesting to compare the roundhouse.)
The video does point out that capoeira is effective because it took less acceleration to produce a lot of force. (Just look at a ratio of force for acceleration.) What amazes me about capoeira is how agile the person can be. The capoeira practitioner here looks pretty heavy too. ;)

Spaghetti Dinner March 9, 2012
The demo team is raising money for new training equipment and we’d like to feed you in exchange for your help! Who really wants to cook on a Friday night anyway?!
Each meal includes spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, and your choice of bottled water or can of soda. Pre-orders will be taken through March 7. There will be very limited supply for those who do not get their orders in.

Our guest instructor was Dennis. He used to work as a correction officer in California State Prisons and gave a first hand account of the mentality attackers usually have when picking/attacking targets. We also covered situation awareness, how to use everyday purse items as weapons, and how to scream.
While screaming may sound like a natural reaction many people are not accustomed to shouting at the top of their lungs, and this carries over into dangerous situations.
Safety Tip: practice screaming! and if you're in the Sacramento area come join us for another hands on self-defense class in Rancho Cordova next Saturday
