Full speed!

For good skiers only: when the famous Midi ridge isn't equipped with ropes anymore, it can be easier to ski from the ice cave, making a few turns on the north face as you go. Just make sure you don't fall or get caught in a slide, as it's a long way to Plan de l'Aiguille!
Here, Jimmy Sesana getting first tracks, with the Aiguilles de Chamonix in the background.

Jimmy and I had a spectacular day of skiing today, finding powder all along Grand Envers, a variant of the classic Vallée Blanche. Crevasses all filled up, skis on until Montenvers, really hard to believe it's late May!

I love the light on this one!

Sometimes, things don't go exactly as planned! :)

Ropes are overrated anyway... Mich freesoloing the 6a+ last pitch of "Marches du Temps", next to the classic BASE exit.

Few sports are as well suited to action sequences as BASE jumping. And when you can add good light and the ever beautiful Verdon gorges in the background, well, there's no going wrong!
Mich on his morning jump from the exit he, Tancrède Melet and Julien Millot opened last year.

I just bought a Nikon D4 to complement my D800. After another winter of shooting skiing with 3.5fps, the high burst rate and pro build quality of Nikon's flagship finally convinced me to make the jump. And considering I'll be shooting BASE jumping in Verdon on Sunday, probably a good choice, too.

On the plus side: pristine snow and first track. On the down side: terrible, nearly unskiable crust.
Jimmy Sesana on Vallée Noire.

Rock season is finally on! We climbed twice on warm, sunny, high altitude granite this last week, and things can only get better from there.
This was from a couple weeks ago, Elsie and Francis sport climbing in a crag above the village of Arnad in Val d'Aosta, home to excellent cragging and multipitch barely an hour away from Chamonix.

Trying something a bit different from the usual ski shot. This is the shadow of Aiguilles Marbrées, on the descent from Col des Flambeaux.

Another shot of Jimmy in a small patch of powder, making first tracks on Vallée Noire yesterday.

Even when the snow isn't that good, it's always a huge privilege to ski in such a breathtaking location! Jimmy Sesana gives it all on Vallée Noire, with the east faces of Mont Blanc and its satellites in the background.

I spent the day skiing and shooting Italian guide Jimmy Sesana on Vallée Noire, the Italian variant of über-classic Vallée Blanche. Here's a shot from early in the day, the first slope from Col des Flambeaux down to the foot of Aiguilles Marbrées, under a towering Dent du Géant.
Small man, big mountains!

Something completely different from usual... Hulya has made this awesome knife from scratch, using an old Petzl Quark ice tool blade and a Chamois horn.
The best part about it, of course, is that we'll use it to slice cheese!

I am about to spring on a Nikon D4, as I need the sturdiness and the high framerate for action. And I am now stuck in the XQD conundrum - does anybody have advice on which card/size to get? I don't want to rely on a single CF slot.

A classic shot from Chamonix, climbing the big fin on Aiguille d'Entrèves, on the French-Italian border.

Jeff skinning up toward Petit Capucin, with the scary serac barrier above us. We went up the obvious snow cone center-left of the image, then into the steep and blank wall in the shade.

Now that good weather is back in Chamonix, I have had a very busy past few days, first shooting some alpine climbing with Kyle Dempster, Adam George and Mark Thomas for the American brand Outdoor Research, and today, I belayed Jeff Mercier as he was trying to open a new (ridiculously hard) mixed line on Petit Capucin. Unfortunately, a blank section ended the attempt, but here's a shot from the fourth pitch, showing just how blank and steep it was!

I am happy to announce that since the Friday alpine photography workshop sold out in a few hours, we have added another session on Saturday (15th of June) for the Arc'teryx Alpine Arc'ademy: http://alpinearcademy.com/tickets/saturday/alpine-photography-with-alexandre-buisse
If you're considering signing up, I'd suggest doing so quickly as these spots probably won't last long either.

Benoît, a climber from another rope team, waits at the third belay on La Pépite.

Finally, I managed to climb something! With David, we got on "la Pépite", on the north face of Petite Aiguille Verte, an easy new route that has become increasingly popular due to easy access and fun climbing.
A ton of fresh snow on the route, but great conditions as soon as we hit the steep stuff. Feels good to be back in the mountains!

Something completely different from mountain photography, but rarely have I been as touched by a single set of images.

Trying something different with my landscapes. Here, the sun sets behind Cerro Torre, with El Mocho on the left, Torre Egger and Torre Standhardt on the right, seen from close to the Polish bivy on the Torre glacier.

I am very excited to finally be able to announce that I will offer a short workshop on alpine photography during the second Arc'teryx Alpine ARC'ademy, in Chamonix next June. My workshop will run from late Friday 8th of June to end of day on Saturday 9th, involving spending the night in the Cosmiques hut and shooting sunrise on Vallée Blanche!
There are limited spots, so if you want to attend, you'd better sign up soon! All details are on http://alpinearcademy.com/alpine-photography-with-alexandre-buisse
Edit: The website is currently down, and it appears the dates were mistaken, it's actually on 14-15th of June. Sorry about that!

Jim admiring the vast expenses of the Tyndall glacier, part of the massive Patagonian Southern Icefield which all teams had to cross early on day 1.
This is my last day in Patagonia, I'll start the long journey back to Chamonix later in the afternoon. Quite an adventure it has been!

Pretty happy about that one... Especially considering it's also on the cover of the Spring/Summer '13 EU catalog, and that I have another shot on the US version.

Since I am now back in the race headquarters in Punta Arenas for a few days, here is a shot from the glacier section on day 1. It was only three weeks ago, but it somehow feels like months have gone.
Jim Easterbrook from Team NorCal (US) explores an ice canyon while trying to find a passable river crossing.

The end of the kayak section at PC10, highlighting the crazy weather conditions encountered too often in Patagonia, and which constitute half the fun...
This was Team Adidas on day 4 of the race, and right now, on day 10 (!), they are just a few hours away from the finish line.

And another shot, this time from yesterday's visit of the Rio Verde Estancia (aka Ranch) with Team NorCal.

Sam Salwei jumping over a crevasse as we walked back to PC2. It took us nearly 7 hours of weaving through deep crevasses to cross the glacier in the other direction!

I am back from a pretty exhausting couple of days, running with racers and shooting between PC1 and 3 (then walking back to civilisation over two days), and today between PC8 and 10.
While my 1700 shots slowly download and get sorted, enjoy this highlight of the 45km I have walked on the Hielo Continental Sur!

Waiting... The start of the 2013 Patagonian Expedition Race is in just a few hours, excitement is ramping up here!

Hardly my best image, but still amazing to see the legendary Cerro Torre and Fitzroy, if only through a plane window.
In about three weeks, that's where I'll be, though. Just a wee adventure race to shoot before that.

I will be leaving tomorrow for a long bit of travel which will ultimately take me back to this very special place, sporting some of the most beautiful and challenging peaks on the planet.
El Chalten, Patagonia, Argentina. Can't wait.
