Portage Valley Glacier Lake

In Alaska, there is a place called Portage Valley Glacier Lake, or sometimes just called Portage Valley. It sets about 70 miles south of Anchorage on Seward Hyway. Right around June is the best time for images like this, because of the atmosphere around the lake and cold weather that glaciers make. This image was taken early in the morning. Turned out better than I could have imagined.

Wash Between The Toes

When photographing bears, and you come upon a scene such as this one, you want to be able to photograph the bear doing what he or she is doing. You want to be able to photograph them in their natural state doing what they naturally do. You also want to be able to encourage them in doing what they do naturally. In order to encourage them, you have to stay far enough away, that you don't disturb him or her from doing what they are doing, but yet get as close as you can to get the perfect shot. In this image and all wildlife images that I take, that's what I try to do.

Often, when I'm out photographing bears here in Alaska, long lens or not ….. some bears just have this attitude, that they don't like to be bothered when eating …. Then again, I thank God I have my long lenses.

Damn Lucky

Eagles to me are like bears in some aspects. Except for the breeding period and rearing of their young, eagles for the most part loners. Bears are loners except for the breeding period. Eagles do congregate with other eagles during certain time of year and certain areas of the world, like Haines Alaska, Vancouver British Columbia, and Kamchatka Russia. For their flying ability, they are, in my opinion, the most acrobatic and the most agile big predator bird in the air. Able to Handle, Adjust, and yes, even flip their quarry in mid air and catch it.

Interrupted

I think I interrupted this black bear's meal as I came up on him to photograph. Luckily enough, he didn't bother to move as I was moving completely around him for different angled shots. I did get some very good shots of him as it turned out and I think I like this one the best.

In Flight Meal

In Alaska, I got this shot of this eagle ripping apart and eating this herring in mid flight. Hence “In Flight Meal”. This eagle was only about 20 to 30 feet above the water, and 20 to 30 feet in front of me. Used my 400mm f/2.8 for the shot.

Stranded

In Alaska, I had the pleasure of photographing lots of bears with cubs. These cubs gave me lots of enjoyable shots. Fact is this little guy in this images gave me the most shots out of all the bear cubs that I got to photograph. This cub was soooo small for the time of year it was, that his mother was trying to get him caught up with all the things he needed to learn. when he got to the rock, you see him on now, I think he just gave up and did not want to leave like his mother was urging him to do.

Interruption

Along the Russian River in Alaska, there are many bears fishing in it’s waters. Most of the time, you can watch them doing what bears do in feeding themselves with salmon and they are not disturbed by you watching…… But now and again you might find that one that does not want to your eyeballs all over them….. this was one of those times.

A Surprised Portrait

When I was at brook Falls, this is the second shot that I got, of a  portrait of this of this Brown Bear Cub, and I do mean  "lucky". As I was sitting down watching him and his mother, who by the way was out in the river fishing, I could only see this cub coming in and out of my site, then all of a sudden, he popped up right in front of my lens not that far from me. I laid down and started shooting and this is one of many images that I got. Hope you like.

Black Bears Need Fish Too!!

Yes, even the black bears a long the rivers in Alaska need to find salmon too. They too need to put on a lot of weight in order to survive the winter and to make another spring. There is just about the same number of black bears along the rivers finding salmon as there is brown bears. Sometimes I have even seen them fishing together, which is a rarity in of it's self,(brown bears will chase and even kill black bears if to close to each other). Hope you like this images.

Beggars Can't Be choosers

When photographing bears, you almost have to photograph them in any conditions ……. When I say any conditions, Rain, Snow, Cloudiness and yes even sunshine and in Alaska sunshine is a commodity that is rare. The worst condition that I can think of though is late in the salmon season, when the salmon are dying off and are starting to decay then start rotting. Then when you combine the heat and sunshine with the rotting salmon, getting close to the bears with all the rotting salmon laying around can sometimes create conditions for the weak at heart photographers, not to favorable…….. Sometime even for the stronger types of people too. For most bears, the dead salmon is the only choice they have as for food. I know the smell does not bother them. They think the smellier the better.

Great Blue Heron In Red

Taking images of the different birds that are here in the south, or more specific, Texas……is really different for me….. I mean in a good way. In a good way because of the light. The light is sooooo much different than it is in Alaska. I think the light is much more intense than it is in Alaska and thats not saying the light in Alaska is not intense …. it is ….. just that the light in Alaska stays around longer than it does down here in the south, so when you are to get an image like this one, you better grab the shot, FAST!!!!  I hope you like.

Not Happy

Sometimes, more than not, when bears are on the river, on a food source, and another bear comes into view, or in their spot, they will start to let the intruder know in so many ways that they are not happy at all. If you have never heard a bear snarl before, it is quite intimidating. If you ever hear a bear snarl at all at you, then it's time to back away for your own safety.

Brothers For life

Here is an image that I pulled from the archives, …. one that I just love. #DallSheepRams, like most of the other sheep on the north american continent, band together for life. Yes for life!! They are brought together when very young by the elders of the band. 3 to 4 young rams will hang out with each other until they are on there own to form their own band of sheep groups (females included). But the rams will be together for life. This image shows the closeness they have for one another.

This image was taken after the cub sitting on the barricade got down and crossed the road and got back with it’s mother. When we came up on this little black bear cub….. He just sat down and started to sniff all the flowering dandelions he spotted, while the mother wasting them up not to far from this cutie.

Russian River Black Bears

When one is on the Russian River, in Alaska. It is really unpredictable which bear you will eventually run into…… Grizzly or a black bear. Do not fool yourself, it's not a matter of "IF" you'll run into one of them, it's "WHEN" you'll run into one of them. You just won't see them together on the river. You'll see them on the river fishing just like the Grizzlies and they can get just as mean as a grizzly. So if you ever get down to this river, ….. or any river in Alaska, ….. keep an eye out on the look all the time and beware of their presents….after all….. they are watching you.

As I travel in Yellowstone, I often come across Bull Elk and I get to thinking how lonely their life really is. From the time that I took this image I knew the name for this images was going to be ... "Yearning For Spring". It just had that look

Oxbow Bend

One of my favorite places to photograph in Grand Teton National Park. You can go there everyday, 365 a year and come out with 365 different images of this place and I will guarantee NOT one image will look like the other. If you haven’t been, you should go….

Locomotion

I had moved down to Montana for 1 year over 2010 and 2011. During that time I was going to Yellowstone almost every day and it made for some very interesting shot opportunities. On this particular day, I noticed a herd of Buffalo down in the bottom. As luck would have it, they started to come up the mountain side single file through the deep snow. I knew that as they crested the snow bank I was very likely to get some unique shot opportunities. I checked their direction and positioned myself to be in front of them as they came up over the snow bank. Most of them as they topped the snow bank, saw me and cut off to either side, nice shots but not quite what I was looking for. I wanted one cresting the top in my direction. My patience was rewarded when this big bull came straight over the snow bank, with the snow flying. The shot was exactly what I had planned. The shot was taken on... more »

A Bears Reflections

There is time's when I'm on the rivers, any river, photographing bears, when at the end of the day I will just sit my fat butt on a log for hours sometimes and just reminisce about the long photo-op that I just had. This particular day that I took this image, I did just that. Then when I was done I got up, grabbed my gear and started back to the truck, when as I was walking a long the river bank I seen this bear standing on this log. He had been standing there for the longest time, just staring. As I came around him I took this shot and still he was just staring. I don't think he knew I was there, ….. Or that's what I choose to believe anyway …… That's what this image makes me think is I think at the end of the day, he was doing just what I do ….. reminiscing about the long day

Blowing Wind

As everyone knows ….. when in Yellowstone and mainly in the lamar valley in the winter, the wind blows a lot……… When photographing in the wind it can be a little hard to get that right focus ……. now I'm not saying that this image is the best image that one can take in the wind, but I feel that it captures the feel of the wind that this coyote has to deal with on a day to day basis. …… What do you think………

The Search For Salmon

This last year up in Alaska, the salmon were late. Fisherman complained on every run of salmon that did finally make it up the rivers this year, but the one's that really said nothing and just waited patiently was the bears. When the salmon did make it up the bears made up for the lost time that they endured waiting for them. This was the look as they were waiting.

Exhilarating!!!!

The enjoyment that I get when photographing bears that act themselves and do what bears do is just an enjoyment that I can't explain. When I can climb in the water with them and not worry about them as Im photographing them as they do what they do, is so exhilarating ....... you almost have to be me to find out what thats like. So when I do get close and taking their images, I have to try and get that same feeling transferred to you so that maybe you might get that same feeling as I get....... at least, that"s what I'm trying for.

What A Beautiful Morning

When I was at Brook Falls, I had rented me a cabin to stay in. I stayed at Brook Falls for 7 days and I was able to get thousands of images while I was there, but this image still takes me back right now as if I was there at that moment. I took this image right off the little porch of the cabin I was staying in on the last morning of my stay, as I was looking over the landscape and drinking a cup of coffee.

Wondering Around

I caught this same grizzly with her cub just outside Yellowstone Park, wondering around, doing what bears do. I just had to photograph this pair because they seemed to posing for it. Shot this image with my Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III and my Canon 400mm f/2.8 lens at a distance of about 50 yards, more or less.
